Around the Town...
Are you ready for some shopping? Clayton was
built with that in mind. Most of downtown
was constructed in the late 19th century to
meet the needs of shoppers coming from both
land and water.
Be sure to look up while you walk along
our main streets. The upper stories share
attractive architectural features - window
crowns, and cast-iron cornices.
If you are interested in architecture, be sure to
pop into the Chamber of Commerce for their
historic walking tour map. It’s a self-guided
passport into the intriguing history and charm
of Clayton’s commercial buildings, homes and
churches. Also, take a stroll along our scenic
Riverwalk.
The natural beauty of the St. Lawrence River
has inspired artists for centuries, so its no
wonder that Clayton is home to a number of
galleries.
Art galleries are just the beginning. A
leisurely walk around the Village brings
you to an array of unique shops including
clothing boutiques as well as shops offering
1000 Islands collectibles to take home as a
keepsake.
Take home a taste of the 1000 Islands from
one of several gourmet food emporiums
including 1000 Islands “River Rat” Cheese,
Bechaz Riverdale Cheese, or a bottle of the
famous “Original” Thousand Islands Dressing
that was created right here.
Perhaps you’d like to visit a local winery,
distillery or brewery.
Clayton’s climate combined with the constant
moisture flow from the St. Lawrence River is
a perfect match for growing cold hardy grape
vines.
Coyote Moon Vineyards, located on East
Line Road in Clayton, offers free tours of the
wine making area and a tasting room is open
daily allowing visitors to sample before they
purchase. Coyote Moon Wine & Dine, located
on Riverside Drive, also offers the opportunity
to sample wine, grab a bite to eat, shop, or
listen to local musician.
The Thousand Islands Winery is located
approximately 7 miles north of Clayton. Free
wine tasting allows you to sample their wines
and you can take a free tour of the wine
production facility.
Northern Flow Vineyards, Clayton’s newest
winery, invites visitors to its tasting room and
patio located at DeLuke’s Garden Center, about
