How to Prepare: Cold readings
from the script – Please be
familiar with the show (perusal
script available at Holliston Public
Library)
Performances dates: April 28,
29 and May 5, 6
Character descriptions:
Catherine – 25, is brilliant,
has an awkward personality and
is often sarcastic. She is obviously
suffering from depression,
and her attitude about life is bitter.
She continues on her father’s
work even after he has died. She
fears she might have the same
mental illness as her dad.
Robert- 50s, is Catherine and
Claire’s father. He died before
the play even begins and he was
a very famous mathematician. In
his fifties, he died of a heart attack,
but struggled with mental
illness for years. He has a very
special relationship with Catherine.
Claire- 29, is Catherine’s sister
and Robert’s other daughter.
She is not as smart as Catherine
and they have never quite gotten
along. Claire is a more practical
person than Catherine. She
thinks Robert should have been
institutionalized. Claire has a
fear for unpredictable things
like mental illness. She loves her
sister and wants to“take care of
her.”
Hal – 28, is nerdy, romantic,
and sometimes charming. But
for the most part, he’s a math
dweeb. He is a former student of
Roberts’ and idolizes him. Has
a hard time believing that Catherine
could be as brilliant as her
father, yet has a crush on her.
Mass Audubon’s Broadmoor, Waseeka
Offer Brisk Crisp Outdoor Adventure
By J.D. O’Gara
The sanctuary, located at 280
Eliot Street in Natick, is known
for its breathtaking water scenes,
including waterfalls created by mill
dams.
The advent of cooler temperatures
doesn’t mean you should
hibernate. January is a spectacular
time for a romp through
the wetlands and woods of the
624-acre Broadmoor Sanctuary,
Massachusetts Audubon Society’s
jewel practically in Holliston’s
own back yard. With nine
miles of trails, this piece of land
abutting Indian Brook and the
Charles River is home to over
150 species of birds, not to mention
other wildlife, including
beavers, adjacent to scenic waterways
and mill dam waterfalls.
Trails range from easy to rugged,
so a trip to Broadmoor is what
you make of it.
“About a year ago, we completed
an extension of our allpersons
trail,” says Elissa Landre,
Sanctuary Director at Broadmoor,
referring to a quarter-mile
Broadmoor trail built in 1999
that can accommodate people of
all abilities. “We added 600 feet
that go up to a rise overlooking a
field and forest, that people can
use to watch hawks, foxes and
deer.” The all-persons walk incorporates
a boardwalk and even
a downloadable audio tour that
alerts visitors with visual impairments
to sensory stimuli they can
hear, smell and feel.
“In January, if there is snow
(visitors) can see beautiful snow
covered landscapes, if not beautiful
frozen ponds and landscapes,”
says Landre. “And sightings can
include red-tailed hawks, a variety
of birds like cedar waxwings,
wild turkey and more. Small
mammals are active under the
snow. Turtles are active under
the ice. If it’s black ice you can
see them.”
Now that many leaves have
dropped from the trees, fox and
coyote, who are actively hunting,
become easier to spot. A little bit
of snow might reveal their tracks,
or those of others living in the
woodland home.
If you spot a beaver lodge,
know that there’s activity inside
them.
“Beavers are snug in their
lodges. Once the wetland freezes,
they can’t work – they’ll be in the
lodge. They’re going to stay in
their lodge once the ice is frozen.
They store food in the fall. They
store tasty branches by cutting
them in their teeth and sticking
them in the mud near their
lodge,” says Landre.
Broadmoor’s not only an excellent
location for sightseeing,
but it’s a great spot to bring your
snowshoes and cross country skis.
“Snowshoeing and cross
country skiing is permitted on
the trail, so bring your equipment,”
says Landre, although
expect the trails to be natural,
not groomed.
Broadmoor is anything but
quiet in these coldest months.
In addition to an owl festival
planned next month on February
4th, which will feature live owls,
you can choose from such programs
as Owl Prowl Adventures,
Watercolors in Nature, Animal
Tracking, nature photography
and more this month.
Broadmoor Sanctuary is
located at 280 Eliot Street in
Natick. It’s open to visitors from
Tues-Fri, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with
daily admission for nonmembers
is $5 for adults and $4 for children
(2-12) and seniors (65+).
Entrance is free with an annual
membership, $65 per family for
new members, or $48 for a single
membership, which includes admission
to all 100+ Mass Audubon’s
sanctuaries across the state.
If Holliston locals are seeking
an even closer, more rugged
adventure this winter, they can
look no further than the 229-
acre Waseeka Wildlife Sanctuary,
an unstaffed sanctuary off
Broadmoor Sanctuary on Eliot
Street in Natick, part of Mass
species of birds, including the
titmouse.
of Clinton Street in Hopkinton
that backs almost into Highland
Street. Waseeka is open daily,
dawn to dusk.
“Waseeka is one of our jewels,
actually. I like it a lot. It’s where
I get away,” says Landre. It’s unstaffed,
and no one plows the
parking lot in winter, but if you’re
up for a rugged adventure, it’s on
the Holliston, Hopkinton border
and has trails and a pond. It’s a
mecca for photographers and
birders and people who want a
Still Time to Prep Car for Winter, Says AAA
Cold weather may be on our
doorstep, but there is still time to
make sure your car is ready to start
and run in the coldest and harshest
conditions we may face over the
winter months, according to AAA
Northeast.
“Preventive maintenance is essential
for safe driving and greatly
decreases the chances of being
stranded in the cold,” said John
Paul, AAA Northeast Senior Manager
of Traffic Safety and the AAA
Car Doctor.
Motorists can be prepared for
adverse winter weather conditions
with these tips from AAA:
Battery and charging
system: Have the battery and
charging system tested if your
vehicle’s battery is more than three
years old. Your vehicle will need
a fully charged battery to start up
during a cold snap. Even a good
battery can lose up to 50% of its
capacity when the temperatures
drop to zero. At 32 degrees it can
take up to 30% more power to
start a cold engine.
Coolant: Check the coolant
level in the overflow tank when the
engine is cold. If the level is low,
add a 50/50 solution of coolant
and water to maintain the necessary
antifreeze capability. A 50/50
mix of antifreeze and water will
protect your car’s engine to -34 degrees.
You can test the antifreeze
protection level with an inexpensive
tester available at any auto
parts store. Check the cooling system
hoses for leaks, cracks or loose
clamps, too. Any hoses that feel
brittle or spongy when squeezed
should probably be replaced.
Ignition: Damaged ignition
wires, a cracked distributor cap or
worn spark plugs can make starting
difficult. If the check engine
light is flashing this indicates an engine
misfire that could be a result
of a malfunctioning ignition system.
Driving with a flashing check
engine light will permanently damage
the engine catalytic convertora
very expensive repair.
Oil: This is a year-round recommendation,
but certainly worth
taking care of with the rest of your
winter prep. Always have your oil
changed per manufacturer recommendations.
You should have
your vehicle’s transmission fluid
level checked at the same time.
Synthetic oil is a benefit in every
vehicle and will allow for quicker
starts in very cold weather.
Tires: In areas with heavy winter
weather, installing winter tires
on all four wheels will provide
the best traction. Winter tires are
also formulated to work better in
very cold weather conditions due
to the stickier rubber compounds.
All-season tires work well in lightto-moderate
snow conditions provided
they have adequate tread
depth. Examine tires for tread
depth, uneven wearing and cupping.
Uneven tire wear can indicate
alignment, wheel balance or
suspension problems that must be
addressed to prevent further tire
damage.
Washer fluid: Fill the windshield
washer fluid reservoir with
a winter cleaning solution that
has antifreeze components. Some
window washer solution is rated to
just 20 degrees, but in cold weather
this solution can freeze and damage
the washer system. Look for
washer fluid that protects well
below freezing temperatures.
Wipers: Wiper blades should
completely clear the glass with
each swipe. Replace any blade
that leaves streaks or misses spots.
Consider installing wiper blades
that have a one-piece plastic beam
frame or winter blades that wrap
the metal frame in a rubber boot.
Both designs help prevent snow
and ice buildup that can interfere
with blade-to-glass contact.
Engine Warm up: Extensive
engine warm ups are not necessary
even in very cold weather. A more
fuel efficient technique is once the
car is running and you are settled
in with your favorite radio station
and your seat belt fastened, drive
reasonably until the engine comes
up to operating temperature.
AAA Northeast is a not-for-profit
auto club with 62 offices in Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, Connecticut, New
Jersey, New Hampshire and New York,
providing more than 5.2 million local
AAA members with travel, insurance, finance,
and auto-related services.

A Room of One’s Own
Adds to Life Balance
Regardless of whether you
live as a couple or a family with
kids or whether you have an
open floorplan in your home
or not, it is important that both
adults each have a place within
the house, to call their own. This
can be as small as a quiet corner
reading nook or as large as most
of the basement or garage. Having
your own area where you
can relax, unwind and retreat
from the universe is therapeutic
and can be key to a balanced and
happy lifestyle.
But first, make sure the main
living areas of the house are set
up to accommodate the family,
so your individual spaces remain
your own.
Next, each space can be decorated
the way each of you wants
– nobody else can dictate what
you put into your space and you
can set it up how your heart desires!
If your personal space is
a small area that requires delineation,
a portable screen should
just do the trick. You’ll want a
comfy sofa or oversized chair
with ottoman, maybe a library
of good books, a TV or both,
plenty of pillows, throws, some
lamps and your own personal inspiration
on the walls! Of course,
the style and subject matter will
differ between the man cave and
the woman cave, but these will
be the essential elements of the
room in both cases! Anytime you
can incorporate a fireplace, take
advantage of that opportunity
too! The idea is complete relaxation!
If you want to take it a step
further, you can incorporate creative
materials, a table with a
good chair, storage for supplies
and good task lighting. Now
you’ve got a private sanctuary
and hobby/craft space combined!
The only rules for creating
your private sanctuary space are
– there are no rules! Just make
sure it’s comfortable. If you have
any trouble creating a cozy, comfortable,
inviting space, simply
Holliston Rallies to
Aid of Patts
On Friday December 16, Elisabeth and Henry Patt, owners
of local business Patt’s Blueberries, lost their home to a
fire. Soon after, a Go Fund Me page, with Stacey Raffi, Katie
Connors and Mary Greendale listed as contacts, with the goal
of raising a little bit of money, $5,000 to help the Patts with
related expenses. The idea was to give the Patt’s daughter the
monetary donations on December 23.
Although the Holliston Local Town Pages went to press before
this date, by December 19th, Gabrielle Mahoney responded
to over $18,000 in donations:
“Our family is so overwhelmed and grateful for your caring
and generosity. We are blessed that Mom and Dad are
ok and have the opportunity enjoy this Christmas. So many
people have reached out via phone calls, emails, Facebook we
are surrounded by support. When I told Mom about all the
people from different facets of life she said her faith in people
has been restored. In true Mom form she said she plans to pay
it forward when she can. Mom and Dad want to convey how
thankful they are to everyone. Today we find out more from
the insurance company about what is next. Our parents need
to stay close to the property to prepare the fields for next season.
We will get through this one step at a time. With all your
love and support the steps don’t seem so insurmountable.”
By December 21, donations on the Go Fund Me page had
reached $27,245.
Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
– Smile Magic Opens in Ashland
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
What sets Smile Magic apart
from other family dentistry practices?
“Our state of the art practice
provides a warm and friendly
dental care experience for each
person who walks through our
doors,” owner Reema Dhingra,
DMD, said at the Grand Opening
last month. “Whether the
patient is elderly, adult or young,
we treat everyone as family.”
Dr. Dhingra’s family dentistry
practice opened its doors
in the Market Basket Plaza at 39
Pond St. in Ashland. Her associate,
Dr. Nikhil Whig, provides
primary general and cosmetic
dental services while Dr. Dhingra
specializes in orthodontics
and dentofacial orthopedic
treatment for children, teens
and adults.
The combination of a kidcentric,
adult-focused atmosphere,
bi-lingual services,
state-of-the-art equipment and
practitioners who are expert in
current advancements in the
field of dentistry and orthodontics
gives Smile Magic its edge.
New Smile Magic patients
are offered a special first-time
visit at $49. All major insurance
plans are accepted, and for those
new patients without coverage,
arrangements are made for a
free dental exam and x-rays.
Orthodontic braces are offered
Prevention is key. Staff strive
to educate parents that a child’s
initial dental visit should be at
age one, when first teeth break
through the gum line. Nutrition
is discussed with parents along
with the ill effects of bottle feeding
at night which leaves sugar
covering a baby’s teeth, a potential
cause of cavities.
Likewise, a child’s first orthodontic
visit should be at age
seven because this is a time
when jaw discrepancies might
be found and corrected while
the child’s bones are still growing.
“It is easier to make skeletal
changes in cases with an
underbite, overbite or crossbite
– a process known as facial orthopedics
– at a young age. This
makes the child’s orthodontic
appointment to treat any type
of malocclusion, usually around
age 12, that much easier,” Dr.
Dhingra added.
Smile Magic staff credentials
are impressive.
Dr. Dhingra received her
pre-med undergraduate degree,
a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition,
from Punjab University in
India, her Doctorate of Dental
Medicine after graduating
Summa cum Laude from Tufts
School of Dental Medicine in
2007, and an Orthodontic Certificate
from Tufts School of Orthodontics
in 2009.
Dr. Dhingra also owns the
well-established, pediatric dentistry
and orthodontics practice,
New England Kids, which serves
families in Auburn, Mass., and
the Worcester County area. She
bought the 20-year-old practice
in 2011 and leads an exceptional
team of 23 professionals.
Dr. Nikhil Whig, DMD,
holds his Doctorate in Dental
Medicine from Boston University
School of Dental Medicine,
graduating in 2015. He also
holds a dentistry degree completed
in 2010 in India.
“Excellent patient care is my
top priority,” Dr. Whig said. “I
will always take the time necessary
to understand the specific
dental problem and explain the
treatment plan to my patient.”
Both doctors are professionally
affiliated with the American
Dental Association, the American
Association of Pediatric
Dentistry and the Massachusetts
Dental Society. Dr. Dhingra
is also associated with the
American Association of Orthodontists
and the New England
Don’t Let Them Hurt
By Cristina Valas, DVM, The
Family Pet Hospital
When our pets hurt, we hurt.
To help, you need to know why
they are in pain, but this isn’t always
obvious.
It is important to avoid giving
your pet potentially dangerous
medications such as Tylenol,
Motrin or your own pain meds.
At best, using ice and heat are
good options that won’t hurt
your pet. Everything else should
go through a veterinarian. Your
vet will narrow down why they
hurt and what treatments will
help.
A young dog with a sprained
leg will probably do fine with
anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed
by your vet, but as pets
age their ability to tolerate these
drugs for chronic use lessens.
There are many sources of pain,
and the ideal treatment is removal
of the source. This is not
always possible, and many geriatric
patients end up with chronic
painful conditions, just like their
human counterparts!
In aging pets, the organs are
less able to handle common pain
medications, so it is important
to use the lowest, effective doses.
In veterinary medicine, this is
accomplished by using a multimodal
pain treatment – giving
several medications that work on
different areas of the pain pathway,
each at lower dosages, thus
minimizing side effects.
In senior pets with concurrent
conditions, such as liver and
kidney issues, we recommend
alternative modalities such as
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation
(VOM), frequency-specific
cold laser therapy or acupuncture
to alleviate pain and avoid
medications that would worsen
their medical condition.
VOM uses an activator device
like human chiropractics
do, which shuts down the pain
cascade and helps the animal be
pain-free without medications or
with minimal meds. The beauty
of VOM is the entire body heals
better because VOM improves
circulation to all organs, thus improving
their function and slowing
their decline, in addition to
managing pain.
Frequency-specific cold laser
therapy decreases inflammation
and pain and stimulates aging
and low-functioning cells to produce
more energy and thus function
better and heal faster. Other
modalities like hydrotherapy or
physical therapy or functional
nutrition may be employed.
No, we cannot prevent death,
but with the correct treatment
your vet can make your companion
comfortable and happy for as
long as they want to be with us,
and that is precious!
If your pet needs help or is taking
multiple medications and you want to
explore alternative modalities, contact
me at drcrisvalas@thefamilypethospital.com.
As always, first consultations
for new clients are free.
Holliston VFW Post 8507 Thanks Residents
Holliston’s VFW Post 8507 would like to
acknowledge and thank those town residents
and businesses who have contributed to our
September fundraising drive. Your generosity
allows us to support a variety of worthwhile
endeavors to assist populations such as veterans
and Holliston’s senior citizens. Fall and winter
activities have included Thanks to Yanks (a nonpolitical
organization supporting military members,
veterans and their families); Operation Delta Dog
(a non-profit organization that trains shelter dogs
to work as service dogs to assist veterans with
service-connected disabilities); the delivery of
approximately 30 turkey dinners each month to
needy, home-bound senior citizens in Holliston;
and the annual senior citizens roast beef luncheon
in January. In the spring we sponsor and help with
the placement of flags on the graves of veterans
in all of Holliston’s cemeteries each Memorial Day.
Your generosity is very much appreciated.
Respectfully,
Electrical Done Right – WattsControl, Inc.
Providing unsurpassed electrical services for 16 years
By Deborah Burke Henderson,
Contributing Writer
It’s obvious that Walter Hernandez
loves what he does; which
is providing Metrowest homeowners
with smart electrical
solutions through his company,
WattsControl, Inc.
“Since I was a child, I’ve been
fascinated with anything electrical,”
Hernandez stated in a
recent interview. “I like dealing
with people and find great satisfaction
in seeing our customers’
faces light up as their electrical
issues are resolved.”
WattsControl, Inc.’s electrical
services include installing flatscreen
televisions, thermostats,
smoke/carbon monoxide (CO)
detectors, bathroom fans, outlets
and wall switches, telephone, data
and cable connections, interior
and exterior lighting, and new
electrical panels and upgrades.
They also install state-of-theart
home automation systems
that monitor your home’s energy
usage and report it through your
smartphone.
This Ashland-based business
has been recognized by Angie’s
List with a “Super Service
Award” and has received numerous
five-star customer reviews in
the electrical services industry on
Google and Yelp. A caring community
partner, WattsControl,
Inc. supported the 2015 Ashland
Lion’s Club 8 th Annual Charity
Golf Tournament as a Masters
Sponsor and is supporting the
Ashland Music Association in its
2016-2017 school-based concert
program.
WattsControl, Inc. is known
for providing unsurpassed service,
exceptional workmanship
and innovative solutions that exceed
the homeowner’s expectations.
Their promise: “The job
will be done correctly the first
time, using top-quality materials,
and that the customer will be 100
percent satisfied with our work.”
While the electrical team are
on the road assisting customers,
the office is managed by Valerie
Kupferman, who keeps the office
running by scheduling appointments,
responding to customers’
questions, and making sure their
customers’ electrical needs are
fully met.
“Relationships are important
to us,” Master Electrician Hernandez
added. “We’re proud of
our existing customer base and
look forward to working with
new customers and introducing
them to our services.”
All work includes a two-year
warranty on parts and a lifetime
labor warranty. They offer senior
citizen and military discounts.
Whether you’re purchasing a
new home or selling one, WattsControl,
Inc. can handle any job,
from a home electrical inspection
to installing a new breaker,
7/1 ARM Adjustable Rate Mortgage
GFCI, thermostat, smoke or CO
detector to upgrading your electrical
panel.
If you’re considering having
new insulation installed through
Mass Save® as a result of a home
energy assessment, WattsControl,
Inc. can inspect your attic
and basement for knob and tube
wiring, determine if it’s present,
and if so, remove it. They also
perform “IC Rated Inspections”
to ensure there is proper clearance
between any existing light
fixtures and the insulation. Once
the inspections have been completed,
and any issues that were
discovered are corrected, the customer
receives a home electrical
safety inspection form that is forwarded
to Mass Save®.
According to a recent WattsControl,
Inc. blog, maintaining
your oil or gas heating system with
an annual tune up is essential. In
addition to having an efficient
heating system, homeowners can
save money and conserve energy
with a computerized Nest Learning
Thermostat. WattsControl,
Inc. electricians are Nest-certified
RonsTire.com
professionals. The Nest thermostat
automatically adapts to the
temperature preferences that you
set as the seasons change. Your
cooling and heating settings can
be adjusted at home or from your
smartphone or computer. Within
a week, it will remember the
cooling and heating patterns that
you’re comfortable with in your
home. If you’re away from your
house and the temperature falls
below your preset safety temperature,
the Nest system can alert
you before the pipes freeze.
WattsControl, Inc. wants
to ensure that your family and
home are safe in the coming
months. The company website,
www.wattscontrol.com offers
regular blog postings to inform
and educate homeowners about
various electrical situations and
provide safety and energy-saving
tips and ideas.
As you prepare for the upcoming
holidays and winter months,
WattsControl, Inc. can assist
you with any electrical needs. If
you’re having an electrical issue,
they will identify the problem and
Holliston Church Group Volunteers
for Appalachia Service Project
This past July, a group of
eleven youth and nine adults
from St. Michael’s Church in
Holliston traveled to Wyoming
County, WV to spend a week
volunteering with Appalachia
Service Project. Appalachia Service
Project (ASP) is a non-profit
organization that pairs volunteers
with families in need of home repairs
in Central Appalachia, with
the mission of making homes
warmer, safer and drier. This
was the fourth time that a group
from St. Michael’s volunteered.
Though most ASP volunteers
are youth, many adults volunteer
as well. The group from St. Michael’s
included six families who
volunteered together, and this
was the second volunteer experience
with ASP for many.
The trip was coordinated by
Cathy Harper, Leader of Youth
Ministries at St. Michael’s, and a
past volunteer. Youth, led by St.
Michael’s Youth Minister Jarvis
Wyche, worked with the adult
volunteers to prepare for the trip
a year in advance. They raised
funds, learned about the Appalachian
region, people, and culture,
and had several training sessions
on how to properly use tools
under the guidance of Don May.
Don was one of the adult volunteers
on the trip, and is an experienced
carpenter. To earn money
for the trip, the group baked holiday
cookies, helped people move,
did yard work, held a car wash,
and babysat. They also built and
sold two benches, with the money
going toward trip expenses.
The group rented three large
vans to transport their tools and
passengers for the 13-hour trip.
They stayed at a K-8 school in
Bud, WV, along with ASP volunteers
from Illinois and North
Carolina. The St. Michael’s
group was divided into three
work teams, each with their
own separate home and family
to work with. One group built
a deck, another group repaired
a roof, and the third group installed
flooring and renovated a
bathroom. Volunteers continued
the work that other groups had
already completed earlier in the
summer. ASP has the difficult
task of selecting home repair applications
that can be completed
in seven weeks, the length of
time that ASP runs a volunteer
center for the summer. All of the
St. Michael’s teams were able to
finish their projects by the end of
the week, which was the also the
last week before ASP left the area
after a summer’s work.
Volunteers from St. Michael’s
were Abigail Pinter Parsons,
Jeff and Michelle Tate, Samantha
Tate, Henry Tate, Bob and
Paula Colburn, Alexandra Colburn,
Kathy Longee and Grace
Longee, all of Holliston; Don
May and Tess May of Millis;
Jenzi Reed and Dana Tilton of
Concord; Youth Minister Jarvis
Wyche; Josh Rice, Tom Rice,
Stacey Thorner, Ben Thorner
and Caroline Thorner, all of
Ashland. Josh Rice is currently
serving in the United States Air
Force, stationed
in
Japan. He
volunteered
on the trip
while on
leave.
The experience
of volunteering
is
life-changing
for the youth,
as well as the
adult volunteers.
Teacher Spotlight: Doug Keough
A self-taught artist, Doug Keough
has been a private art instructor
for the past twelve years. As a
commissioned, freelance artist, he
specializes in photo-realistic portraits.
Beginning in graphite and
charcoal, Doug quickly honed his
sketching abilities at an early age.
He soon advanced to pastel portraits,
and by the age of 18, regularly
sold commissions of people,
their cars and animals. As he immersed
himself in the medium,
Doug noticed that pastel work often
has a rough, unblended look. As he
evolved, Doug developed a smooth
blended style that is instantly recognizable
in his work today.
A move from Boston to Miami
brought an opportunity to paint
portraits on a large scale. Doug
worked as a portrait artist for the
Barton G. events company, in
South Florida. Painting celebrity
portraits onto large murals, he was
Living Healthy
New Year, Clear Skin
By Lisa Massimiano.
Licensed Esthetician and
Certified Acne Specialist
Owner of Skin Smart Salon
If you have been diagnosed
with acne and haven’t been satisfied
with drug store products
or the suggested treatment from
your doctor, consider seeing an
Acne Specialist.
What is an Acne
Specialist?
An Acne Specialist is a licensed
skin care professional
who is specially trained to treat
acne using a combination of
clinical treatments, home care
protocols and regular follow-up
during the process of clearing
acne prone skin.
Most physicians don’t have
time to spend educating patients
on the root cause of their acne.
They often prescribe oral antibiotics
and strong topical retinoids
that can leave skin dry, red and
irritated. Patients get frustrated
with these side effects and stop
using the products.
How an Acne Specialist
Can Help You
An Acne Specialist will assess
your individual skin type and the
type of acne you have to develop
a plan of action specifically for
you. They will take the time to
teach you about the root cause
of acne and provide information
on lifestyle, diet, medications
and ingredients in makeup and
skin care products that exacerbate
acne. They help you to get
your skin clear and teach you
how to keep your acne under
control.
For people struggling with
acne, it can be frustrating to try
and communicate with their
doctor on a timely basis. My clients
tell me that the best part of
working with an Acne Specialist
is that we are there for them
to answer their questions and
provide support while they go
through the process of getting
their skin clear.
Questions about acne? Call me
at (508) 881-1180 or email me at
I went to Skin Smart a little over a year ago as my last ditch effort to
treat my acne. I had tried almost every acne treatment out there and
was still struggling. When I went to Skin Smart my acne was at the
worst it had ever been. I was a little reluctant that anything was going
to help but within a few months I started seeing improvements.
A year later and my skin has neverlooked so good! I am so grateful
What a Difference a Year Makes!
For the Keenans, 2017 brings a lighter,
healthier time!
When you find something that works,
what do you do? You tell your friends and
family, of course! That is exactly what 46
year-old Paul Keenan did after his successful
experience with New England Fat Loss
(NEFL). Just a year ago, Keenan suffered
a blood clot in his lung which he was told
was caused by excess fat from his stomach.
After blood thinner treatments, he knew
he had to drastically shed weight from his
341-pound frame. A friend told him about
the NEFL program, and a year later,
Keenan is happily 100 pounds lighter, and
consequently, healthier!
“I had done other diet stuff, lost weight,
and it came back,” Keenan said. “I knew I
had to do something. I went in to see what
it was all about.”
Keenan learned that NEFL loss is a
very different program from traditional
diets. It is catered specifically to an individual’s
personal makeup and body
chemistry, and results are delivered almost
immediately.
“It’s really motivating when you see a
pound come off a day,” Keenan said. “I
really liked the science behind the system.
It got to the core of the problem. I was
skeptical, but lost 40 pounds in 40 days!”
The next step was sharing this exciting
information with his family. A few
months after joining the program, his father,
mother, and two sisters enrolled in
NEFL, and each saw positive results. By
later in the year, the four Keenans happily
sat down this past Thanksgiving table substantially
lighter and healthier.
“My Dad also had a blood clot and
was on blood pressure medication and
has lost 37 pounds,” Keenan said. “My
Mom lost 30 pounds initially and is still
losing weight; she is killing it! She is under
200 pounds for the first time in 30 years,
and I am wicked proud of her. My sister
lost about 25 pounds, and my other sister
ended up losing about 20 pounds.”
Keenan is currently on the maintenance
leg of the NEFL program and now
feels armed with the knowledge to sustain
that weight loss with his personal information
on what foods will fuel his energy levels
and burn fat. For Keenan and the rest
of his family, losing weight was not only
a family affair, but possibly a life saving
journey.
“I can honestly say NEFL saved my
life,” Keenan said. The next one could
have been a heart attack or a stroke. I
think everybody should do this. Mission
accomplished!”
A Fresh Take
New Work by HCA Members
Through January 19, 2017
HCA Gallery, 98 Hayden Rowe St.,
Hopkinton, Mass.
Reception: Friday, January 13 from
6:30 to 8 p.m.
(Hopkinton, MA) -- The new HCA
Gallery rolls into 2017 with a wildly
varied selection of work by area artists
– from Lissa Banks’s painting of explosively
blossoming parrot tulips to William
Moser’s awestruck carving in koa wood
of King Lohiau of Hawaii to Jean Cummiskey’s
glittering miniature mosaic of
Boston Harbor.
Organized by HCA co-director Kris
Waldman, the exhibition presents 18
pieces by 18 artists associated with Hopkinton’s
newly expanded community arts
center. “It’s an unusually diverse show,”
Waldman says, “and it shows the range
of our members’ artistic practices. In
18 pieces we have works in ten different
media.”
“Yearn,” by
Lissa Banks
“Boston Harbor,” by Jean Cumminsky
Banks’s much, much larger-than-lifesize
tulips, in hot yellows and reds, curl
and list with Mapplethorpe-like suggestiveness.
Banks, who also works as HCA’s
administrator, showed several paintings
in this past spring’s Describing the Real
at HCA.
Moser, a Hopkinton resident who also
carves stone, based his relief Resurrection
on the legend of Lohiau, who was killed
by a jealous god. Through the love of
the goddess Hiiaka, as Moser depicts, he
emerges from a flower, a man again.
Cummiskey, also of Hopkinton, has
been creating scenes out of fragments
of glass, mirror, bead, and shell and for
six years. This view, looking in from the
water toward Atlantic Wharf, captures
the reflective night face of the city as it
appeared in 2015.
A Fresh Take: New Work by HCA
Members runs from December 19
through January 19. A free reception for
the artists and the public will be held at
the gallery on Friday, January 13 from
6:30 to 8 p.m.
Danielle Brucato Aims for Another Lasting Mark on
MMH Gymnastics
By Christopher Tremblay
Holliston senior Danielle Brucato
first stumbled upon gymnastics
at the tender age of six and
liked it so much she spent the
next decade trying to perfect her
skills. As a senior, she is part of
the Medway-Millis-Holliston
co-op gymnastic team, where she
participates in all four events for
the squad. Through the years of
training, vault
has become her
favorite of the
four events followed
by beam,
floor and bars.
“I really
enjoy participating
in vault
(it’s also her best
scoring event),
although when
I was younger
I liked floor
much better,”
the Holliston
senior said. “It
wasn’t until last
year that it changed to vault, and
I started scoring more. To be a
well rounded gymnast you have
to be able to compete on a high
level in all four events.”
When she first got involved
with the sport through Elite
Gymnastics in Ashland, Brucato
enjoyed being able to take part in
not only one event, but four different
ones. It gave her a sense
of ability to accomplish her skills
in numerous events, instead of
just one. However as she entered
high school, she found herself
with a dilemma – Holliston did
not have a high school gymnastics
team. Instead of competing
for her school, the then incoming
freshman just continued to work
on her skills with her club team.
“It really didn’t bother me not
having a high
school team,
as I had never
really considered
it to be
in my future,”
she said. “We
never had a
town team, so
my mindset
wasn’t looking
forward
to high school
gymnastics. Instead,
I put my
focus on looking
for colleges
with gymnastic programs.”
While she did start to do her
research on colleges, she eventually
came to the conclusion that
gymnastics just wouldn’t fit into
her busy college schedule.
“Visiting schools, I soon found
out that the major (Bio Medical
Engineer with Pre-Med) I
wanted to pursue would be tough
enough,” Brucato said. “Trying
to maintain high grades and
gymnastics would not work
well together, so I’ve given up
on that idea. I may look at a
club program but that won’t
be right away.”
Holliston merged with
the Medway and Millis
gymnastics team, under the
guidance of Coach Breanna
Vacca, during Danielle’s
junior year. Now, Brucato
would have the opportunity
to tryout and compete on a
high school gymnastics team
for two years before graduating.
“I was really excited, as I
still wanted to have the opportunity
to participate on a
gymnastics team on the high
Holliston’s partnership with Medway and Millis gymnastics not only gave Holliston High’s Danielle Brucato,
now a senior, the chance to compete in high school gymnastics, but it afforded her an opportunity to shine.
This year, she’ll be hard pressed to do better than she did last year, but that’s her goal.
school level,” Brucato said. “I
wanted to share in that feeling of
being part of a team.”
Last winter, Brucato, competing
in her first ever high school
gymnastics season, and her
MMH teammates finished third
in the Division 2 South Sectionals,
grabbed another second
place finish in the State Tournament
and a third place finish at
the New England Tournament.
Individually, Brucato won the
vault and the bars at the Sectionals
to take home the top place
in the All Around. She then
matched that performance with
another spectacular finish in the
State Tournament taking second
in the floor and bars, while nailing
top honors in the vault and
beam. The results landed Brucato
her first ever All Around
State Championship. She would
finish fifth at the New England’s.
Having put forth such a tremendous
first campaign, Brucato
would be hard pressed to do
better in her second season with
MMH, but the Holliston senior
is looking to do just that, at least
team-wise.
“Last year, we put our six best
girls out there in each event and
It’s New Year’s Resolution Time ...
JOIN NOW!
c $0 Enrollment Fee
made it as far as we could. This
year, we’re hoping to go further,”
she said. “For myself, I just want
to maintain what I did last year,
as I haven’t really been able to
train all that much in the off-season
as I had to quit the club team
to be on the high school team.”
If for some reason the Holliston
senior can’t improve upon
her performances of a year ago
and she is able to manage the
same type of results she put up
in the Sectionals and State Finals
last year – one would have to say
she had herself an incredible
two-years of high school gymnastics.
Holliston Sextet Optimistic About 2016-17 Season
By KEN HAMWEY
Holliston High’s ice hockey
team and coach Dan Geary
should experience a much
smoother situation this year compared
to last season, when both
were involved in a last-minute
transition.
Geary, who was hired as the
Panthers’ coach a week before
pre-season workouts began, had
plenty of questions about his
personnel but not much time to
get answers. When a new coach
is hired, adjustments have to be
made, but they take time. And,
in Holliston’s case, time was not
on its side.
Geary’s rookie year at the
helm ended with the Panthers
compiling a 4-12-4 record and
only one triumph against a Tri
Valley League team (Ashland).
The coach is expecting
the 2016-17
campaign to be less
complicated.
“It was a tough
first year,’’ said
Geary, who played
at UMass-Lowell, a
Division 1 program.
“There were adjustments
for both the
players and myself.
I didn’t know what
the returning players
were capable of
or what buttons to
push. The kids were
learning a new system
and we didn’t
have much depth.
But, I’m optimistic
about our second
season.’’
Geary is upbeat
because he knows
where Holliston’s strengths are
and where the Panthers need to
improve.
“We’ve got experience on
defense and in goal,’’ he said.
“And, our team chemistry and
camaraderie are excellent. We’re
building a family atmosphere.
However, we must improve in
two areas — finishing plays on
offense and committing to the
defensive end.’’
A firm believer in puck control,
Geary says it’s that element
that can lead to success. And,
that means being more competitive
against TVL squads and possibly
qualifying for tourney play.
“If we manage the puck
confidently and make the right
decisions, winning will follow,’’
Geary emphasized. “Puck control
means the skaters without
the puck must be moving to get
open. Controlling the puck will
change the way we play and help
us to compete more effectively in
the league and hopefully to qualify
for a tourney berth.’’
Holliston’s captains will play
key roles for the Panthers at both
ends of the ice. They include
goalie Adam Kampersal, forwards
Kyle McDevitt and Jack
Larche and defensemen David
Sancomb and Jack Wilkie. All
are seniors except Larche and
Wilkie, who are juniors.
Holliston coach Dan Geary came on board in pinch last year. Shown here with
captains, from left, Jack Wilkie, David Sancomb, Adam Kampersal, Kyle McDevitt, and
Jack Larche, he’s gotten a handle on his teams’ strengths and weaknesses, looking
forward to a stronger year.
“Adam is a vocal leader who’s
competitive, instinctive and wellskilled,’’
Geary said. “Kyle has
speed and he’s strong on his feet.
He can kill penalties and also be
used on power plays. Jack Larche
is a quality leader who plays well
in all three zones. He’s got a nose
for the net and he can kill penalties.
David is aggressive and competitive.
A strong skater, he’s hard
to get around. And Jack Wilkie
is a quintessential defenseman.
He’s solid, skates with great vision
up ice, moves the puck well
and is a solid decision-maker.
He’s got a big heart and he’s ultra-competitive.’’
Two juniors who’ll team with
Sancomb and Wilkie and buoy
Holliston’s defense are Tim Ringie
and Will Fitzgerald. They are
returnees with experience.
“Tim is strong, physical and
works hard,’’ Geary noted. “He’s
coachable and has a lot of raw
skills. Will has offensive skills and
creates a positive atmosphere.
He’s got size and strength.’’
Three forwards who can spark
the Panthers’ offense by finishing
off scoring drives are juniors
Cam DeCristofaro and James
Franco and sophomore Danny
Rutowicz. “We’re counting on all
three to give us scoring opportunities,’’
Geary noted. “Cam has a
physical presence on the ice, and
he’s got a hard shot. James has
break-away speed and we’ll use
him on our penalty-killing unit.
Danny has good speed and skills.
He missed half of last season because
of a shoulder injury.’’
A trio of returnees who’ll be
used in reserve are sophomore
forward Alex Naya, junior goalie
James Crews and senior forward
Matt Corbett. “All three will provide
depth and get playing time,’’
Geary said. “We’ll be carrying 22
players, nine of whom are freshmen.
Some of them will get ice
time and could make an impact.’’
Pointing to Hopkinton, Westwood
and Medway as top contenders
for the TVL title, Geary
also includes Dover-Sherborn
and state champ Medfield in the
mix. “Medfield lost a lot of veterans
but they’ll still be competitive,’’
said Geary, who previously
was an assistant coach at his high
school (Ridgefield, Conn.)
As for Holliston’s assistants,
they are Greg Balewicz and Connor
DuPont, who also will work
as the jayvee coach.
Where Holliston fits in among
TVL sextets remains to be seen.
But, in the early going, the Panthers
are off to a positive start,
opening with a 1-1 tie against
Ashland and playing Weston to
a 5-5 tie.

Holliston single-family sales –
10 year history
The hottest price range - where are the bulk of the
sales?
A bulk of the Holliston sales this past year of single
family home sales, 32%, is between $300-$399k, which
represents 59 homes sold.
While 2016 was in most ways outperformed by its
older sister, 2015, it did have one winning category: the
days on market dropped 14% over the previous year, and
down a whopping 53% over 2006.
Mortgage Rates and Affordability
Housing agency Freddie Mac recently predicted that
mortgage rates will rise to 4.0% in 2017. That’s more
than 0.50% higher than the current mortgage rate average.
Fed officials on December 14, 2016 raised its target
for short-term interest rates by 0.25 percentage points
to a range of 0.50% and 0.75%. It is important to note
that the Fed does not set mortgage rates, and short-term
rates and long-term rates differ. Mortgage rates typically
follow long-term bond rates, such as the 10-year U.S.
Treasury note. Longer-term rates typically adjust before
the Fed makes a move. In fact, mortgage rates have risen
almost a half percent since the election in November.
The Fed also announced that it expects to raise shortterm
rates three times next year.
How will rising interest rates affect you?
If you are looking to buy a home, your mortgage
interest rate plays a huge role in how much money a
lender will let you borrow. That is, your purchasing
power can change measurably if rates tick up a half to a
full percentage point. It all comes down to the almighty
monthly payment. If you are paying more in interest
and less on principal, then your purchase price will be
lower than if the reverse were true.
Summary
We expect Holliston to again have a very strong real
estate market in 2017. Prices have risen steadily over
the last 10 years, a trend we believe will continue, particularly
since fewer homes on the market translate into
higher prices for those houses that are available: a simple
supply and demand equation. The downtrend of days
on market may also indicate that the forecast may be tilting
toward the seller’s advantage in the near term.
If you are considering selling, what can you do to
maximize the sale of your home? We recommend employing
market-savvy tools in getting the most money for
your home. Vesta Real Estate Group partners with its
clients and conducts pre-list home inspections – so there
are no surprises – staging and professional photography
to present your home in the best possible light. Our decades
of experience have shown that being prepared for
your sale yields the highest prices and best results.
What is the best strategy for buyers in a seller’s market?
In a word, preparedness. Vesta recommends taking
steps to get pre-qualified for a mortgage, and then lock
in a favorable interest rate before rates go up. This will
allow you to open up more options on your future home.
Equally as important, be sure to have an experienced
real estate agent working for ¬you, representing your
best interests. Vesta, with our team’s decades of experience
focused in and around Holliston, can advise you
how to make the best decision on your biggest asset, and
find your forever home.
