MASK
I’m so tired of everyone asking
What do the lonely do for the holidays?
Let me answer the age old mystery.
We wear mask.
We wear the mask of pretend.
The perfect smile even have the dimples etched in so well.
We wear mask.
Makeup need not touch us.
As we conceal our pain, flawless effort. Sometimes we wear it to bed.
What do the lonely do?
We wear mask to hide the depression
Mask our fears and anxiety.
Mask our issues even on the brink of insanity.
When there’s a crack we rush to fix it.
Bargaining with ourselves that our pain is nothing compared to others.
We wear the mask of laughter as the mask of crying sits tucked
away from the world to see.
Mask of concern jumping at the opportunity to be there for others
to push our problems away
Mask of socialites even in a room full of people no one need know we still feel alone.
We wear mask to hide the mourning of loved ones lost, heartaches gained,
and confidence lost.
What do the lonely do for the holidays?
It’s simple.
Like thespians in an endless play.
We wear mask.
