Welcome to the Jan/Feb Issue issue of Marbella Rocks
Magazine where we start the New Year with some
positive vibes on how to conquer goals and stick
to those grand NY resolutions over the coming
12 months. This can be anything from homes to
relationships, so if you’re wanting to make changes in 2017 check
out page 36 to find out how.
The fashion stakes get higher this month too with internationally
renowned fashion label Religion Clothing gracing our pages for the
first time with a stunning 8 page ‘Brave The Elements’ shoot. We’re
in love with their on trend men’s and womenswear range featuring
jackets and jumpsuits for her and chic parkers, loungewear and
tailoring for him. Plus Valdy is back with her new Marbella Cruise
Collection. Soak up some winter sun with their unique swimwear,
kaftans, dresses and ponchos.
We are also excited to reveal the Winners of the Marbella Awards
2016. Thousands of you voted via our secure online voting system
to decide on the eventual winners of these coveted awards. Read
our 6 page feature on page 38 to find out who won the best of the
best in all 15 categories.
Plus, check out our fabulous two new columnists – Dominique Laird
from Golden Tarts and Vera Keinanen from Salon La Vida By Vera.
Dominique brings you all the latest hair and beauty trends for the
coming year in ‘Beauty Rocks’ and Vera shows us how to fake it
in ‘We Love Extensions’ – covering hair, nails and lashes in one
superb article.
While Summer seems a long way off there is no harm in planning
those key big nights out! We are pleased to announce a raft of
huge concerts heading your way… for starters we have ‘I Want To
Know What Love Is’ rock legends Foreigner on June 11th (and an
exclusive interview with the band on page 30) and soul sensation
George Benson behind smash hits ‘Give Me The Night’ and “Never
Give Up On A Good Thing’ on July 21st. There are 3 more big acts
to be announced shortly so watch this space.
2017 is looking good already,
KIM & KANYE – IS IT ALL OVER?
According to reports Kim Kardashian is planning to divorce
Kanye West and take full custody of their two children, North
West and Saint.
According to US Weekly the relationship between the
reality TV star and her rapper husband has been under
strain for some time and she wanted a break prior to his
hospitalisation back in November. However, the friend said
that Kim won’t make any decision until Kanye has fully
recovered from his breakdown for his sake.
The couple wed in a star-studded ceremony in May 2015.
While this marked the first time
down the aisle for Kanye, Kim
has been married twice before
to record producer Damon
Thomas and basketball player
Kris Humphries, the latter lasting
only 72 days. Looks like she might
be giving Joan Collins a run for her
money.
DADDY COOL
Hollywood heartthrob
Bradley Cooper is set to
become a Dad for the first
time as Russian girlfriend
Irina Shayk confirms she is
pregnant and already in her
second trimester.
Victoria’s Secret model
Irina, 30, took to the stage
at the Victoria’s Secret
annual fashion show in Paris,
covering up her bump in a
red tassled jacket as she
revealed the news to E!
Entertainment. Backstage
models were shocked by
their fellow ‘Angels’ news.
Bradley, 41, who has been
dating Irina for 19 months
on and
off also
appeared
to be feeling the same
(!) saying his impending
fatherhood came as a “real
shock”.
As the news broke in
Paris, Bradley was spotted
out in LA with a very serious
look on his face (pictured
here). In his recent film,
American Sniper, Bradley
got some real stick for how
he held his fake baby during
filming. Let’s hope he copes
better with the real deal! The
new addition to the Cooper/
Shayk clan is due in May.
ROCK & STROLLER
Rolling Stones frontman Mick
Jagger has become a Dad for the
eighth time aged 73 with his 29-yearold
ballerina girlfriend Melanie
Hamrick.
The baby boy was born on
December 6th and marks the eighth
child for Jagger who has a checkered
love life having had children with 4
different women, a fake marriage, a
real marriage and a barrage of affairs.
Interestingly, despite just becoming
a father his eldest granddaughter
Assini Jagger has also just had a baby
making him a great grandfather! His
eldest daughter Karis Hunt Jagger
is also 17 years older than girlfriend
Melanie, who is 44 years Mick’s junior.
This could be the last offspring
for the ageing rocker – who has
reportedly amassed a £200,000
million fortune and splits him time
between pads in New York, London,
Paris and Mustique, no doubt visiting
his ever growing family members
dotted around the world!
FASHION DESIGNERS SNUB FIRST LADY
Iconic US fashion designers Tom
Ford and Marc Jacobs have revealed
they have no desire to dress new first
lady Melania Trump.
Tom Ford stopped by The View
to talk about his new film Nocturnal
Animals, and spent some time talking
about first lady fashion.
“We've got a new first lady, Melania
Trump, and she's quite beautiful, and
she's thin, she's gonna look great in
clothes, no?” host Joy Behar asked
Ford at the top of the interview, clearly
hoping to learn if Ford would consider
working with her.
A hesitant looking Ford paused for
a moment before responding, “I don't
know. I was asked to dress her quite a
few years ago and I declined.”
Explaining his reason as, “Well, she's
not necessarily my image.”
The Daily Mail had reported
that off camera Ford was
quoted as saying “I have no
interest in dressing a glorified
escort who steals speeches and
has bad taste in men!” although
after less than 24 hours the
post was taken down most
probably due to Trump’s legal
powerhouse.
Meanwhile fashion legend
Marc Jacobs has also snubbed
the first lady, “I have no interest
whatsoever in dressing Melania
Trump,” Jacobs told WWD.
“Personally, I’d rather put my
energy into helping out those who
will be hurt by Donald Trump and
his supporters.” Ouch!
CHERYL BACKLASH
Cheryl Cole, the unlucky in love star who has two failed marriages
behind her has finally found her “Mr Right” in One Direction singer
Liam Payne and there’s a baby on the way too after months of
speculation. However the former X Factor presenter, 34, has been
suffering severe criticism by 1D fans who have accused her for being
too old for 23-year-old Liam.
Fans have also been posting the screen shots from Liam’s first X
Factor audition when he was 14 and Cheryl was 24 labelling her a
cradle snatcher.
A particularly angry fan wrote, “F*** off Cheryl. You can have any man in
the world. Step the f*** away from Liam or we going to have problems.”
The most vile troll
added: “Repulsive
w***e. From one bed
straight to the next.”
Cheryl responded
with, “When people
hate on you it’s
because you have got
something they want.”
MADONNA & PENN ROUND 2?
Madonna has offered to remarry former
husband actor Sean Penn at the Arts
Basel charity gala in Miami.
The 58-year-old singer who has
remained firm friends with Penn since the
end of their 4 year marriage in the 80’s
– offered to remarry him if a $150,000
donation to her Malawi charity was made.
"I'm still in love with you," she told the
56-year-old actor on stage in front of a star-studded audience including Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Rock and Courtney Love.
Madonna allowed him to handcuff himself to her waist, which saw her joke,"The many moments that were our marriage.”
Among the photographs and memorabilia auctioned off throughout the gala, Madonna also auctioned three black and
white photos from her wedding to Penn, shot by the late photographer Herb Ritts for $230,000.
THE FUTURE OF HYPERCARS
The Nio EP9 just smashed the Nordschleife electric car lap record by
a whopping 17 seconds using only 80% power. Had it been running
on full power it would have put the supercar on a par with the world’s
fastest petrol powered road legal car - the Radical SR8. Driven by
Nelson Piquet Jnr, the recent track feat by NextEV’s Nio EP9 beat
automotive powerhouse the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It accelerates
from 0-200kph in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 313kph
(194mph). All 7 cars manufactured have been sold already but pundits
are predicting big things for electric cars, saving on petrol fumes as
well as being able to charge for a full days use in less than 45 minutes.
A CUT ABOVE THE REST
Men are definitely
a little more relaxed
in their approach
to grooming these
days. It’s certainly
considered more of
a luxury treatment to
go to a barber for a
straight razor shave
– either as a relaxing
way to forget about
the stresses of life
or as preparation
for a special event
(perhaps a wedding
day). But wet shaving still represents an important part of the
men’s grooming tradition. It’s also a great activity to do with
your father or son. Men need traditions that can help bond them
together. Visiting the barbershop like Garage Barbers in Elviria
with your father or son is a great tradition to begin in your family.
Many men have been going to the same barber all their life
and have introduced their sons to the same chair and the same
barber. What a great way to bond with the men in your life...
• We start by exfoliating the skin. This helps to remove any
dead skin on the surface of the face.
• Then Shaving oil, containing various essential ingredients
Is massaged in with the tips of the fingers in a circular,
vigorous motion to ‘raise’ the beard, soften and prep the
skin and beard.
• A hot towel is then applied to open the skins pores, soften
the beard and draw the essential ingredients into the skin.
The hot towel is removed before getting too cold because
the beard won’t stay soft and the pores can close.
• A lather of rich shaving cream is then applied using a hot
badger hair shaving brush in circular, vigorous movements
to once again raise the beard and any ingrown hairs.
• The first shave is completed using a disposable blade in a
cutthroat style razor, going with the grain of the beard.
• For a double shave, a gel is then applied and the second
shave is done checking all directions of hair growth to give
the cleanest, closest shave.
• A cold towel is then applied to freshen the skin and close
all the pores.
• A post shave moisture gel is then massaged in for the final
stage of the shave.
RECIPE
THE RIVER CAFÉ’S
WINTER MINESTRONE
SOUP
Nothing is more warming in winter than a
classic Minestrone Soup. This variant on
an old classic is one of the most popular on
the BBC Good Food Guide and is packed
with healthy veg and herbs. Tastes even
better the next day too.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 medium carrots, roughly
chopped
• 1 large red onion, coarsely
chopped
• 1 head of celery, coarsely
chopped, keeping the leaves
• 1 head of garlic, cloves peeled
• 1kg Swiss chard, leaves
shredded and stalks roughly
chopped
• A good handful of parsley,
finely chopped
• 400g can peeled plum tomatoes
• 1kg cavolo ner, stalks
removed, leaves shredded
(or savoy cabbage)
• Can of Cannelini beans
• 700ml boiling chicken
• A few sprigs of winter herbs
such as Thyme, chopped
• Freshly grated Parmesan
• Extra-virgin olive oil, for
drizzling
METHOD
1. Heat the olive oil in a large
saucepan and slowly fry the
carrots, onion and celery until
soft and dark. This will take
about 20 minutes but it’s worth it
– the slow cooking gives a lovely
taste. Add the garlic, chard
stalks and half the parsley, and
stir to prevent sticking. Stir in
the tomatoes and cook for 10
minutes or until reduced.
2. Add half the Swiss chard leaves,
half the cavolo nero, threequarters
of the beans, and the
boiling stock. Bring to the boil,
then reduce the heat. Simmer
for 30 minutes. Pour in more
stock if needed – don’t add too
much – it should be thick.
3. Add the remaining Swiss chard
and cavolo nero and blanch briefly
so they remain green and crisp.
Season when slightly cooled.
4. Purée the remaining cannellini
beans coarsely in a blender
with some of the cooking liquid.
Add to the soup – it should be
very green. Stir in the herbs and
serve hot with Parmesan and a
drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
WINE MATCH
In general the thought of
wine with soups is not ideal
as liquid with liquid does
not really seem the way
forward! However a chunky,
rustic soup like this delicious
Minestrone is almost like a
stew so would suit a medium
bodied rustic red like Cotes
du Rhone or a young Syrah
or Sangiovese. A classic
Chianti would work well
also. If wine’s not your thing
an ale or bitter would work
nicely and the hops would
offset the flavours of the
vegetables and pulses.
PATRIOT’S DAY
In the aftermath of an
unspeakable and shocking
terrorist attack, Police Sergeant
Tommy Saunders (Mark
Wahlberg) joins courageous
survivors, first responders and
investigators in a race against the
clock to hunt down the bombers
before they strike again.
With 3 casualties and 264
seriously injured from the first
explosion, the second bomb
is expected to be far more
catastrophic.
Weaving together the stories
of Special Agent Richard Des
Lauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police
Commissioner Ed Davis (John
Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey
Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and
nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle
Monaghan) this visceral and
unflinching chronicle captures
the suspense of one of the
most sophisticated manhunts
in law enforcement history
and celebrates the strength
and courage of the people of
Boston.
Written and directed by
Peter Berg, behind hit films
including Lone Survivor, 2016
oil rig disaster flick Deepwater
Horizon, this gripping tale will
have audiences at the edge of
their seats. Slick performances
by Bacon and Goodman with
Wahlberg being a macho but not
overbearing lead, makes this a
definite one to watch.
DUA LIPA
Rising Kosovan-Brit star Dua
Lipa’s debut, self-titled album is
set for release on February 10th.
The model, singer and songwriter
has already enjoyed chart success
with 3 of the self-penned singles
on the album; club floor smash
‘Hotter Than Hell,’ ‘Blow Your Mind
(Mwah)’ and the incredibly catchy
‘New Love.’
Despite being only the tender
age of 20, Dua has already wowed
critics and even got a nomination for
the MTV European Music Awards in
the Push Artist category.
With an extremely powerful and
soulful voice she manages to blend
house music beats with soulful
and deep lyrics. As a lyricist she
is second to none so to be able
to achieve music making, song
writing and singing while also being
incredibly attractive means she is
the ultimate box ticker! Expect big
things from Dua and no doubt one
of her tracks will become the annual
to your summer partying here in
Marbella.
Signed to Warner Music, Dua
shares her management with
Lana Del Ray and she’s been
swatting away comparisons with
the petite star since her signing
in 2016. The ‘dark pop’ niche
bracket she falls in definitely
has its fair share of contenders
including newcomer Alessia Cara,
lets hope she can prevail with this
debut album.
CARVE THE MARK
Good news for fans of sci-fi
adventure series ‘Divergent’, the
best-selling author is back with a new
series that promises to be deeper and
darker and definitely worth the wait!
On a planet where violence
and vengeance rule, in a galaxy
where some are favoured by fate,
everyone develops a current gift,
a unique power meant to shape
the future. While most benefit
from their current gifts, Akos and
Cyra do not — their gifts make
them vulnerable to others’ control.
Can they reclaim their gifts, their
fates, and their lives and reset the
balance of power in this world?
Cyra is the sister of the brutal
tyrant who rules the Shotet
people. Cyra’s current gift gives
her pain and power — something
her brother exploits, using her
to torture his enemies. But Cyra
is much more than just a blade
in her brother’s hand: she is
resilient, quick on her feet, and
smarter than he knows.
Akos is from the peace-loving
nation of Thuve, and his loyalty
to his family is limitless. Though
protected by his unusual current
gift, once Akos and his brother are
captured by enemy Shotet soldiers,
Akos is desperate to get his brother
out alive — no matter what the
cost. When Akos is thrust into
Cyra’s world, the enmity between
their countries and families seems
insurmountable. They must decide
to help each other to survive — or
to destroy one another.
Why do you think your popularity as a band has spanned
4 decades?
There's no doubt in my mind it's the quality of the songs
and recordings that have given the band its longevity.
Great songs are timeless.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Playing the 02 Arena in London before Led Zeppelin
in December of 2007 was probably the highlight of my
career. What a magical show.
What is the favourite track to perform in concert and
what is the biggest crowd pleaser?
My favourite changes all the time. Sometimes it's Say
You Will, which we do acoustically. Other times it's Juke
Box Hero where we do a lot of really great jams.
Being an Anglo-American band - do you ever notice A clash
of cultures?
Not really. It is a good idea, if you wanna stay in Foreigner,
to learn to love soccer though!
What are your hopes for the new “Flame Still Burns” EP?
I just hope everyone gets a chance to hear the song and
see the video. It's such a great song and Kelly's vocal is
truly amazing!
Have you got any reservations about the 40th anniversary
tour - or is age really just a number?!
Not really as we tour all the time. But I do know this
40th anniversary tour will be extremely special. Lots of fun
surprises.
Have you been to Marbella before?
I don't believe I've been to Marbella before, but sure am
looking forward to it.
How would you sum up your experience as a member of
Foreigner?
It all feels so natural, and the music and style are a part
of my blood. Foreigner, to me, was always the perfect
combination of strong songs, great singing, intense heavy
rock musicianship, with a touch of R&B added in. Plus the
band has great chemistry. There’s just no feeling in the
world like going out and kicking butt every night. I feel like
I’ve finally found my home!”
releasing a much anticipated 10-inch
vinyl EP, ‘The Flame Still Burns’ via
Atlantic’s Rhino Records!
The highly collectible EP features a
brand new recording of the title track,
a song Mick Jones wrote for the film
performed by a fictional band in the
film and went on to win the prestigious
Britney Spears has enjoyed over 20 years in the media spotlight, 6 number 1 albums
and a further 23 Number 1 Singles. As she releases her ninth studio album ‘Glory’ to
mixed reviews is it finally time for the ‘Toxic’ songstress to hang up her feather boa
(or should that be boa constrictor?) Critics have panned the star for miming at her
recent UK gig and although she has secured a further 2 year contract for her Las
Vegas show is Britney coming to the end of her pop career path?
Britney burst onto the music scene in 1999 with
hit single and album of the same name ‘Hit Me
Baby One More Time’ which proceeded to sell
over 10 million copies – earning her the accolade
of the best-selling teenage solo artist ever. Her
stock continued to rise throughout the early 2000’s
with album after album notching top spots and her
raunchy, gregarious dance routines and costumes
capturing the hearts of fans worldwide. She was an
overnight teen sensation basking in the fame and
fortune that comes with it. But inside Britney was
secretly tortured.
Managed by her parents (who went through a bitter
divorce) from a young age Britney never had the
chance to grow up like a normal girl. She was thrust
into auditions, performing at theatres before joining
the Mickey Mouse Club at the age of 11 and by the
time of her solo success she was only 18.
By 2006 Britney was showing signs of deep
personal struggles. A young mother with a marriage
on the rocks due to a tumultuous relationship with
backing dancer husband Kevin Federline, Britney
was pictured driving a car with her 6-month-old
son Sean Preston on her lap not a baby seat. In
September she gave birth to a second son Jayden
James and by November of 2006 she had filed for
divorce from Kevin citing “irreconcilable differences.”
However, 2006 wasn’t her annus horribilis. The
worse year for teen sensation Britney came in
2007 when she suffered a very public meltdown
which included her shaving her head, attacking
paparazzi and stints in rehab which culminated in
her collapsing and being hospitalised. The pictures
of her strapped to a hospital gurney clearly show
the singer is comatosed on drugs. It was shortly
after this time that she lost joint custody of her
young boys to Federline – and only given supervised
visiting rights.
With her personal and
professional career in tatters,
Britney reluctantly went on stage at
the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards
and was lambasted for miming
and being too overweight for the
performance - aired to millions
worldwide.
She decided to take a break from
the record industry and luckily came
back with a bang in December 2008
with album ‘Circus’. The album was
one of the fastest-selling of the year
and the sultry and sexy lead single
‘Womanizer’ propelled her back into
the limelight. The ensuing Circus
tour netted the singer a cool $131m.
This was followed up by seventh
studio album ‘Femme Fatale’ in
2011 which peaked at Number
1 on the US Billboard Chart. Her
appearance as a judge on US ‘X
Factor’ alongside Simon Cowell in
2012 also helped her appeal to her
fanbase yet again.
Fast forward to 2016 and Britney
is seemingly again at career
crossroads. While her Las Vegas
residency at Planet Hollywood (she
performs three times a week in 6
week rotations) was given the green
light for a further two years, her
ninth album ‘Glory’ and subsequent
live performances haven’t done
much to silence her critics with
accusations of miming to tracks and
less than poor dance performances.
Plus during a recent interview with
NME Magazine Britney doubted her
own career saying she might well be
better off leaving it all behind and
becoming a teacher.
“Seeing other artists continue to
do this kind of thing inspires me
too. Because sometimes I’m like,
what am I doing? Like, I could be a
teacher,” she confessed.
But Britney candidly revealed
that her latest record is the first
one where she really took creative
control - and learnt to say no.
“Honestly, this is the first project
where I’ve really been hands-on.
I was really specific about who I
worked with and I’ve been learning
to say no. I’m a people-pleaser, so
that’s hard for me – even if I don’t
like something, I’ll do it just to make
a person happy.”
Well Britney now has an incredible
choice on her hands. If she listens to
the pundits she may well veer into
a life of Vegas shows and bit tours.
However she cites Madonna and
Whitney Houston as her idols and
with Madge and Whitney clocking up
careers spanning four decades she
might just be in for the long run.
NEW YEAR
NEW YOU
WORDS: TANYA VEGAR
With the new year we all start with
plans to conquer new goals and create
grand resolutions for the coming twelve
months. More than often the year flies by
and we haven't checked these goals off
and they roll over to the following year
with only a few modifications.
It is important to have ambitions and a desire
to want to become healthier, a better person,
happier - but realistic changes that match
your ability to commit are most important.
A different approach to creating a long list of objectives over
the next year is simply to look at your current circumstances
and to see how to spark more joy in your life. This idea comes
from a Japanese theory by Marie Kondo on creating space
and decluttering your environment primarily referring to your
living space. Once we have learnt how to declutter our living
areas it can be wider applied to our general life principals.
"Life truly only begins once we have our home in order".
When we look around our home often we have hoarded
years and years of collectibles that we just stuff and store
somewhere that we more than likely won't even look at or
touch over the next year. This
includes our wardrobe, books,
photographs, stored boxes in
the garage. It can be a daunting
task that seems impossible to
tackle especially as we all have an
emotional attachment to many of
our belongings, but once your life
is more organised and you have
created space it flows onto making
your life easier.
It is suggested that the decluttering process works through
stages and starts with your wardrobe as this has the least
emotional attachment when culling. All your clothes need to
be pulled out and while deciding on what to keep you ask the
question of whether each item sparks (you) joy? If you haven't
worn it in the past twelve months you are probably unlikely to
wear it for the next twelve months. It can also create potential
for someone else to make use and find happiness from what
you are no longer benefiting from.
Once you have mastered the de cluttering process and
worked your way through your home from kitchen, bathroom
to office, (including all your drawers) creating an environment
where the things you cherish and use are accessible and
also visible your life becomes more simple and organised. It
is important to respect the belongings you have and when
hidden, bundled or boxed they are not creating any joy in your
life. Tidying doesn't mean getting rid of everything, more so
just keeping what makes you happy.
This is an important concept which could be applied
throughout life. We can ask the same question of our personal
circumstances and make positive changes in our employment,
interpersonal relationships with partners and friends. Determining
the people in our life that create happiness and make us feel
better can have huge positive impacts on our well being.
If we all think of our circle of friends and extended circle
we can think of people that make our mood positive but in
contrast there are different people that drain us. So focusing
your energy on people that make you feel good about yourself
instead of people that bring your mood down is an important
way to spark more joy in your life. We all have times of need
and trouble but there must be a balance and friendships
should seek a balance working for both people. Before
just cutting people from your life you could talk to them
at an appropriate time about the
relationship you have and how to
make it better.
There are many ways that can
make a friendship feel draining,
someone that makes an appointment
to see you and always cancels
last minute is not respecting your
time, someone that never shares
their portion of the bill over dinner,
someone that only calls you when
they have problems but never asks
how you are or forgets to call when things are going well for
them. In some cases it really can be a situation where your
friend is not aware of their behaviour and the affects it has on
you. But we all have our limits and before breaking it is better
to deal with the issues.
The same can be looked at for our personal relationships with
our partner. Do we feel we are being taken for granted, is the
playing field honest and respectful. Whatever your situation,
whether being in a marriage, living with your partner, dating,
casual meetings you need to feel good in yourself and the other
person should enhance your happiness level. We often become
complacent in our relationships but seeking a level higher than
satisfactory is important for our personal wellbeing. We have a
choice with our partnerships and respect and honesty, taking
care of each other makes these partnerships special. If we are
not feeling cared for or appreciated then some changes are
necessary. You should feel a spark of joy when spending time
with your partner so try to find new ways to create happiness
and fun in your partnership.
Another aspect of our life which we dedicate
a great amount of our energy and time is
our work. Employment is important to feel
valued in society and in having a sense of
self worth. Whether your occupation is
going to the office, looking after children
at home, or being an athlete, it needs
to fulfill us emotionally as this is what
we do day in and day out and there
is no escape from. It may not be
possible to change your position
in the workplace but if your
work is not fulfilling you,
creating a sense of self
worth, or sparking
joy then you can
look at how to
enhance your
current job,
develop
into a
new
role or
look
at
ways to develop a new
career path. If you create a mind
map or plan it will make achieving
your goals clearer with a more
determined effort.
Making small changes to find
more positivity and happiness in your
life can have huge long term benefits. Your
home should be a place you look forward
returning to, the belongings you have should be
easily accessible and visible. The people you surround
yourself with should be supportive, caring and uplift
your mood. Your partnership should make you
feel valued and create a sense of contentment.
Commitment and determination to focusing on
creating an environment that makes you happy
will give you a higher level of satisfaction and
wellbeing.
Simple changes in your
mindset and looking for ways
to enhance the joy in your
life will create higher
levels of satisfaction and
enjoyment to the things,
people and environment
you live in.
DON’T LET US FORGET
WILL BLACK BURSURY
On Saturday September 25th at approximately 10.20pm on the last day
of the Monaco YACHT Show 2010, a terrible tragedy occurred.
Captain Michael Ziems of Sailing Yacht Burrasca
was onshore at a meeting with brokers. Around
the same time Bosun William Black was returning
to the yacht on the tender, leaving the harbour for
Burrasca, which was anchored just outside the
harbour walls. Suddenly the tender collided into the
unmanned 31-metre sailing yacht Fado (pictured with
Burrasca just visible in the background.)
No one knows exactly what happened but William
disappeared. After a 2-day search by coastguards,
Will was presumed dead.
JUDITH’S STORY (WILL’S MOTHER)
48
On September 27th we received a phone call from his
Captain advising us of Will’s accident and that the Air
Sea Rescue had been called off. We made arrangements
to fly out but upon arriving in Monaco, we discovered
that the Burrasca had already left the port, having
deposited Will’s belongings with the local police.
This meant that we never saw the boat he was working
on, met with the Captain or crew he worked with, in fact
we never heard from them again. The boat was taken out
of European waters by the owners so they couldn't be
held accountable for anything to do with the accident and
subsequently put up for sale. We later found out none of
the crew were insured by the boat - as if none of their lives
mattered and that Will’s death was an inconvenience. We
have now heard of other families who have lost loved ones
in similar horrific accidents that could possibly have been
avoided if there were stricter marine laws.
Talking to some of the families affected, we want to
join with them and raise awareness about the fact that
the lack of care for human life is not acceptable and
needs to change.
Following the inquest into Will's accident, we suspect
that the tender that he was driving on his way back to SY
Burrasca, must have been hit by the swell from another
tender ahead, that was being driven at speed. This must
have knocked him off the boat and he fell into the water,
either knocking himself unconscious or breaking his neck.
Either way it would have been instantaneous. The boat
then kept going and crashed into a moored boat. However
the fact there was no life jacket being worn and the kill
chord switch had been disabled (under order of the boat
presumably to save time - the kill chord stops the boat if
the driver falls off) meant the divers searching for Will at
the crash site never found his body because they were
searching in the wrong place. If a life jacket had been worn,
then in the worst case we would have been able to find
his body and have to chance to bring him home and bury
MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 27
him and, best case scenario, if he had only been knocked
unconscious we'd still have him with us.
Either way safety of crew is such an important issue and
one which we can't let go. Will had such a huge personality
and love of life know although this has left us devastated we
are pleased to be doing something wonderful in his name.
As well as wanting to get boat enthusiasts, crew, owners
or any companies that might want to support us to raise
money for The Will Black Bursary, we have set up with
sailing academy UKSA - to fund new sailors to train and get
into the sailing industry which he loved so much.
ROSANNA’S STORY
(WILL’S SISTER)
Sadly we never even saw
the boat – by the time we flew
out to Monaco they had left
his belongings with police and
left the marina (I can’t believe
they didn’t even wait for us to
get there - just unforgivable.)
We never met the captain and
never heard from them again.
Many of the local crew and
captains were horrified at the
treatment of the boat to us and
their lack of care for William’s
life. A few of them even left the
boat after. We had the chance
a few years ago to arrest the
boat - but it was owned by a
billionaire Russian (to this day
no one will tell us who it was).
The legal case could have
stretched out for years and
years – and we were told there
was no way we could win.
Interestingly, many boats
chose flagship states with
lenient laws/no laws so no
country and no one governing
body can control it….they are
like floating islands with their
own laws. There is no one
policing these boats and no
one is accountable. They can
do what they want and in our
case the Monaco judiciary
system could do nothing.
According to close friend and ex-fellow
crew member Marco Ravanello, Will was
a gregarious character who brought life
to every situation: “Will was full of energy,
always making people laugh and everyone
wanted to be where he was; he should have
been on stage. He once wrote on his CV that
Like me, if you have love for the 80’s, this year’s
beauty ‘musts’ will be right up your street. From subtle
suggestions to all out retro throwbacks, the 80’s
undoubtedly made a massive impression on the recent
spring/summer 2017 catwalks. I have picked out three
statement looks that will ensure you are bang on trend
for the new year.
Blush Draping
Coined by Marc Jacobs,
draping is the new way to sculpt
the face and give it that desired
have been quick to jump on the
seemed to have embraced the
in achieving glowing skin and
flowing locks. Kourt K claims to
have the ‘avocado’ beverage daily
to keep her feeling and looking
fresh. It’s a rare occurrence that
we get to live like a Kardashian, so
what the hell, give it a go.
Ingredients;
1 Avocado, 1 cup Coconut
Milk and 2tbsp Manuka Honey
Method:
Simply blend the ingredients
together with ice, sip back and
enjoy the benefits!
Bold Lips
It appears that red lipstick is here to stay so you definitely
have an excuse to splash out on a few new sexy shades!
Olivier Theyskens, Valentino and Simone Rocha models
strutted down the runway in statement shades of peach,
electric orange and fuchsia…so basically bold is beautiful…in
fact the bolder the better!
Lashes for Days…
As a make-up artist, one of the biggest questions I get
asked is what mascara I use and which in particular I would
recommend. Whether you want full voluminous lashes or a
glam lengthy wink, there are plenty of brands on the market
that will tickle your fancy without breaking the piggy bank.
Here is three of my favourite, one for every budget.
Cash Lash Out
Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Mascara, for
a false lash effect. Available in six signature
shades, intensely pigmented, for a highly
seductive eye look.
Price €29, available from feelunique.com
Glow for it
Bare, raw skin has
always been a staple
look amongst the hottest designers at
fashion week. The 2017 shows were no
exception, and most definitely followed
suit. Refreshingly this year’s designers
flaunted more of a glowy finish and
displayed the new highlighted trend
on some of the world's most beautiful
cheekbones.
Time to get your glow on ladies.
Super Beauty Blend
Let’s face it, loath them or love them,
the Kardashians skin is always on point.
Glowing, dewy and annoyingly flawless.
They undoubtedly use the most sort
we love
extensions
Vera is one of the most respected and loved
professional hair and make-up artists in
Marbella and the Costa del Sol and has
ESTABLISHED her level of expertise and creativity
since 1993. Starting her career in Helsinki,
Vera gained her expertise in the fine structure
of Scandinavian hair, which is a little more
DELICATE and requires a little extra attention.
Moving onto work in one of London’s top salons
GAINING many skills along the way including
the different techniques in hair extensions,
Vera then headed for a sunnier climate and
Marbella became her home. Vera has been
living and working in Marbella since 2000 and
PROUDLY opened her own salon in the spring of
2015. Vera is keen to stay up to date with the
LATEST fashion trends and developments in hair
TECHNOLOGY so she enjoys doing regular courses
here in Spain and internationally. Her PASSION is
in technical work, she loves colouring hair as it
is amazing how just a little change in shade can
make your skin tone more flattering or make
YOUR eyes brighter. Living in Marbella YOU need
a little outside inspiration to stay on top of your
business so Vera enjoys travelling to see what
the rest of the world has to offer. Vera speaks
fluent Finnish, English and Spanish.
When it comes down to it we all like to look our best
and if it’s possible enhance all our natural assets - from
hair to nails to eyelashes. We can’t help but notice all
the other ladies around us whether its our friends, a coworker
or the lady serving us in our local supermarket
- how she wears her hair and whether she takes care of
her nails, never mind if she has lush eyelashes, nothing
goes unnoticed! At Salon La Vida By Vera we are experts
in hair, nail and eyelash extensions so you can rest
assured you are in safe hands.
Salon La Vida, located amongst the pretty cobbled streets
of Aloha Pueblo, is a hidden gem where you are guaranteed
a warm welcome and the best part is you can have all your
extensions taken care of under one roof.
EYELASH EXTENSIONS
FACT: There isn’t a mascara that exists
that can give you the same results that
eyelash extensions do!
The best thing with eyelash
extensions is that almost everyone can
have them, there are so many different
curves, lengths and thicknesses. We
have 4 different curves, 5 different
thickness and size availability ranges
from 6mm to 18mm.
Because of their versatility, they can
be styled differently at every touch up appointment. If you
are going to a party you can glam ‘em up, if you’re in the
office or want a natural look – leave the mascara!
There are three types of lashes: synthetic, silk and mink.
We at the Salon La Vida By Vera favour using the mink type.
People want all different kinds of looks; dramatic, mascara
effect, cat look, feather look and of course a more natural look.
The benefit of using mink lashes are they are much lighter
in general, so they put less pressure on your lashes and the
material gets a better look. Mink lashes get the best results and
it’s the best material on the market. The “crème de la crème”!
A new set of mink eyelash extensions will take
approximately 1.5-2 hours. We put from 50 to over 120
eyelash extensions on every eye, depending on how many
lashes you have. The treatment does not hurt, in fact most
of the clients fall asleep and when they wake up they have
totally new fantastic lashes!
If you want eyelashes like the Kardashians or more natural
we can help you at Salon La Vida By Vera.
WARNING: Mink eyelash extensions are very addictive!
From blow dries, highlights, texturing treatments
to extensions, manicures, pedicures and eyelash
extensions. Call Vera on +34 952 929 106 today!
HAIR EXTENSIONS
We all aspire to have beautiful healthy, shiny voluminous
hair, just like all our favourite stars including Jennifer Aniston,
Victoria Beckham and not forgetting Kim Kardashian - we all
aim to have beautiful flowing locks! Now for those of us that
mother nature forgot or simply wasn`t quite so generous, worry
not as we have something better than natural! We have hair
extensions!!
I am definitely one the longest established extension
specialists here on the coast, with more than 20 years of
experience in all the different types of hair extensions, including
the world’s leading brand Great Lengths. This brand of hair
extensions are by far superior in quality to other makes and like
anything of great quality comes with a higher price tag. Great
Lengths uses a keratin bonding system, to bond the extensions
to your hair we use an ultra sonic machine guaranteeing
maximum safety with a ‘no harm’ result. So if you are looking
for some volume, length or even a splash of colour, you can
rest assured you’re in safe hands. Plus Great Lengths uses only
100% Fair Trade human hair.
Also popular are Balmain Tape extensions which are
perfect as a filler or again to add a splash of colour. The tapes
can easily be removed and put back in and the same hair can
be used again. Then we have wefts, which are literally stitched
onto your own hair! This is the quickest way of adding A LOT of
volume… the only down side is the maintenance as the wefts
need to be tightened every 4 weeks.
NAIL EXTENSIONS
It has become a desirable quality (even a necessity!)
to have long, beautiful manicured nails as we have the
luxury of living in Marbella and our hands are constantly
on display. To achieve these beautiful nails we offer a few
different options depending on each individual. Working
with both Gel and Acrylic we cannot only gain length but we
can also choose from different shapes keeping up with the
latest trends.
For those of you that are unsure of the difference between
Gel and Acrylic let us explain…….
Acrylic nails have been a staple in the beauty industry
for years, and this staying power has contributed to their
ongoing popularity. Acrylics are applied using a liquid
monomer and a powder to create a hard protective layer
over your own natural nails. Acrylic only hardens when
exposed to air and when this happens it provides the
perfect canvas for applying nail colours, either regular nail
polish or permanent nail polish (ex Shellac) not forgetting a
classic French.
Gel nails are certainly growing in popularity and giving
Acrylic some healthy competition. Gel is applied to create a
hard protective layer over your natural nails as with acrylics,
however gel nails only harden when exposed to LED/UV
light. With Gel you can choose between a wide range of
coloured gels or add a permanent colour (ex Shellac) or go
classic with French. Gel is more flexible so doesn’t break
so easily, its more gentle on the natural nail plus looks more
natural - not to mention Gel is quicker to apply and non toxic.
Both Gel and Acrylic have similar results. They can
lengthen short nails, strengthen nails, and make your
fingers look longer and more slender. Now you know the
difference its up to you which is your preference, and then
the exciting decision of which colour to choose and believe
me you have A LOT to choose from not to mention adding
some sparkle or diamonds to really glam it up! To maintain
your beautiful manicured nails we recommend an infill every
3 weeks and we are on hand Monday to Saturday for any of
those accidental breakages that need a quick repair.
HEALTH & FITNESS
The Future
OF FITNESS
The newest edition to the booming
fitness industry on the coast, Luke is
owner and coach of Marbella´s first
“women´s only outdoor boot camp
company” – Miss Fit Marbella.
Luke specialises in fitness for women,
(weight loss and toning) and is a
strong believer in training outdoors,
which is why, all of his sessions are
based on the beaches of Marbella,
Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia.
Expect to find articles that focus on
exercise for the female sex, tips on
how to achieve your body goals, help
on those stubborn problem areas,
education of nutrition and lifestyle
and how exercise doesn’t have to be
boring!
“Don’t mistake fitness for a gym!
Fitness is more than that, it is a
lifestyle and can be anywhere or
everywhere!”
What 2017 has in store
I
can hardly believe we are in 2017 but after blinking, somehow
we are! Having started my fitness journey as a young boy in
the 90´s and within that blink of an eye, I witnessed a lifetime of
fitness fads and fashions; spanning from home workout videos, with
instructors kitted out in spandex leotards, to home gyms, to feeble ab
machines and the list could go on!
Last year, there was a huge resurgence in many of the past fitness
trends and 2017 is no different, with a mixture of old and new fitness
movements that you will be seeing. After all, is anything ever completely
new, or are these new fitness fads just recreated from past methods?
This article will take you through the top 7 to expect from fitness in 2017.
1. Online Trainers/Social
Media Fitness Explosion
Having been quite apparent in
2016, this year it seems that buying
online workouts and nutrition
plans or following your favourite
fitness hero is going to continue to
grow. We love to follow our body
ideals and Kayla Itsines and Emily
Skye are just two of our favourites
with 5.9m and 1.8m followers
respectively. Personally, I would stay away from these generic,
universal, if you follow what I say, you will look like me programmes.
Don’t be fooled by an Insta account, photo shopped pics or someone
who doesn’t know you or your fitness story. Have body goals and
fitness role models but be careful with what they are selling you.
2. Wearable Technology
It seems as if the marketing teams are on top in this battle and
they have made us need technology to help us get and stay fit! You
must track your steps, you must track your heart rate and you must
track calories through an arm band. With the figures suggesting this
market is going to be worth $12.64 billion by 2018 they have well
and truly sold us on this one.
Don’t get me wrong though, I believe in science in sport and
fitness and I think tracking Heart Rate (HR) during a workout can be
hugely important in many respects. Burning fat is just one example,
as by knowing your Heart Rate Zones and being able to calculate
your HR %s, you can ensure you are staying in the most effective fat
burning zone and state.
My top pick; (if I were
to wear one!) is:
TomTom Touch
€129.99
Perfect for tracking body
fat and losing weight.
3. Live Classes
With a rise in 24 hour, almost PT and instructorless gyms, it
was only a matter of time before these cost saving giants started
to replace class instructors with online or virtual instructors.
The fitness super giant that is Les Mills, has released its
virtual option for gyms and many gyms now have virtual
spinning sessions on throughout the day.
MyRide seems to be the choice of many, and the realistic
graphics and range of terrains to spin too make it the gyms
number one choice.
Again, for me, I suggest training with a real instructor, who
can specifically adapt and alter for your needs and I would
always recommend a smaller gym with personable staff over
a huge cheap gym with fake virtual trainers, funny accents
and cheesy grins.
4. Strength Training
Not exactly new but my prediction has a twist. This is the year
of GIRLS WHO LIFT! It has been a slow rise to fame for many
female bodybuilders but it seems as if society is finally starting
to realise (thanks to social media) great bodies are made in the
weights section. Strong is sexy was the mantra and IG profiles
such as Michelle Lewin (9.3 m followers) and other muscled
and toned beauties have set the road
for women wanting to lift heavy and look
beautiful. And whilst we are on the topic
forget Miss Lewin, as our Marbella gyms
are full of our very own strong beauties.
If you have decided you want the
curves and toned bodies that so many are
flaunting, my top tip would be “why not
employ someone you want to look like!”
And I guarantee every one of you
would love to look like these two…
Vegans, having come into
much scrutiny lately, with fitness
experts often saying it is difficult
to get your protein as a vegan or
at least get lean protein. Whilst
this is true to an extent, the
Vegan diet can be great for the
body and reduce many risks associated with eating too much
meat and red meat. The internet and social media chefs and
food influencers have made it easier than ever to enjoy a
tasty and easy Vegan diet.
6. Mixed Format Classes
2016 was the year of new revolutionary classes never seen
before? Well, not exactly but some clever gyms and fitness
providers (along with their marketing bods) created new classes
with a synergy of
already existing
methods or classes!
Barry´s Bootcamp
has just crossed the
river from America
and touched down
in London! It´s fresh,
it´s new, it hits all
you would want for a
holistic approach to
training, and it costs
€20 a session!
Ultimately, it is an hour of cardiovascular training (running
machine) and resistance training (free weights, bands, med
balls etc) accompanied by pounding music and a crazy
shouting fitness instructor. It isn’t new or innovative but I have
to admit they have marketed well and towards the growing
trend of unity in fitness!
7. Body Transformations
Again, due to the rise of social media it has become
paramount for trainers to show their clients results. We have
all seen them and the majority are quite laughable! No faces,
different body shapes, skewed and stretched images, various
lighting and angles all to show an apparent difference in
before and after.
Whilst my business runs off women wanting to transform
their bodies I also believe strongly in leading a life of balance.
I don’t starve my ladies, I don’t get them taking every
supplement or drug under the sun and I don’t kill their bodies.
So, my warning here is, be careful with what you let yourself
in for. If you have a goal, a competition or maybe a one off
life event to get in shape for by all means push your body, but
know there are always consequences and adverse effects.
There you have it, fitness in 2017!
DAY 1 DAY 7
5. Paleo Diets and Vegan Diets
Two very different diets but both have increased in
popularity recently and this is set to continue into 2017.
The Paleo diet, otherwise known as the caveman diet, takes
us back to our ancestors and eating the way of the caveman or
woman! You can eat anything that could be hunted, lean meats,
fish, eggs and lots of vegetables. But it doesn’t allow for anything
that has been processed, so basically no wheat or dairy. A great
way of losing weight and reducing many health problems.
PHOSH FOOD
You’re probably reading this after enjoying the over excesses of Christmas – far
too much food, alcohol unit overkill and zero time spent at the gym! What better
gastronomy review to give you than one that helps balance you out after the
festive season - meal prep and health café - Phosh Food.
In case you’re a newbie to meal prep – here’s the
premise in a nutshell. Freshly prepared gourmet meals
delivered straight to your door! So using Phosh Food will
in essence be able to improve the quality of your life…
freeing up much needed time previously spent shopping
and cooking whilst becoming a healthier and fitter you at the
same time. It also takes the hassle out of dieting, which we
all know is an arduous task. Just eat what is put in front of
you and the pounds will fall off.
Plus, good news for all of you who are always sneaking to
the biscuit tin – Phosh do a range of healthy breakfasts and
snacks so every meal is covered.
The added bonus of using Phosh Food is that they
have three options to suit every customers needs and
requirements. The first option is to use their ‘Three Step
Process’ where every meal is unique and to your liking using
a drop down menu (categorised into Protein, Carbohydrates
and Greens) to order literally any combination of meal you
want. The second option is to go for their ‘Standard Set Menu’
or alternatively tell Phosh your preferences and dislikes, and
they can devise a variety of meals, preventing a boring and
monotonous diet!
TASTE TEST TIME
Marbella Rocks testers were sent a variety of meals to
taste, all 500 calories and under. They come in generous
sized plastic containers so portion control is always
guaranteed. Phosh chef Phil explains he only uses the finest
ingredients and lowest calorie sauces and dressings to
make every meal as tasty but as healthy as possible.
Breakfast meal prep is important to start the day in the
right way with lots of delicious, slow release foods like
Protein Pancakes, Frittatas and Bircher Muesli.
94
MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 27
The Bircher Muesli we tested
was delicious and contained raw
rolled oats and other ingredients
including grains, fruits, seeds,
nuts, and fresh fruit mixed with
natural yogurt and a scoop
of whey protein. The Protein
Pancake was equally good,
sweet but not overly sweet with
a firm texture – this could also
work as a snack or dessert for
those not on diets.
Next up we tried the mains
– the tangy Mexican Rice and
Jerk Chicken was superb. The
meat was lean and in perfect
thick slices and the Caribbean
flavours gave it an added kick.
The Smoked Salmon and
Mash was also beautiful – lean,
flavoursome and accompanied
with perfectly al dente cooked
asparagus.
The Skinny Lemon Honey
Chicken with Hassle Back Potato
had so much flavour and just
the right amount of sauce to
jazz up the meal without being
overladen and therefore calorie
heavy. The green beans, red
peppers, rice and brocolli side
accompaniments were tasty
too. One thing we did notice is
how bright and colourful all the
dishes were - a sure sign that
the food is fresh and packed with
goodness.
Without a shadow ‘the pièce
de résistance’ for our tasters
was the Oatmeal Cookies with
dried cranberries. Cooked fresh
everyday by Phosh they tasted
devine. We were even told that
Phosh Food customers call them
“crack cookies” as they get so
addicted to them!
FOODIE FOUNDERS
after original artworks have featured in the Tate Modern, Christe’s and Saatchi
Gallery among many others.
Posner's highly collectable art pieces are all hand painted
and explore desire in its many forms - combining fashion,
branding, commodity, culture and art in a stylish and satisfying
way. Her most famous pieces are undoubtedly her ‘Pop
Dolls’ which she has created in thousands of forms including
depicted brands such as Coca-Cola, Walls, Kelloggs, Nails
INK and Disney. Her ‘Magnificent Girls’ were even featured as
the new faces of Magnum UK.
Posner has exhibited internationally; in Japan, Lahore, Hong
Kong, New York and Singapore. Closer to home her painting
‘The Theatre’ was accepted into the Royal Academy Summer
Exhibition 2012. She also participated in From Morning
Till Night, a special event for Katerina Šedá hosted by Tate
Modern, and has since had works shown at Christie’s. Last
year Charlotte also qualified as a Saatchi Gallery Drawing
Competition Finalist. In addition, Charlotte’s artworks were
featured on the BBC Culture Show in 2013.
More recently Charlotte reimagined 45 Little Miss hand
painted characters as part of the 45th birthday celebrations for
the cult brand Mr Men and Little Miss.
“We are really excited to be working with Charlotte and
love her fun interpretation of the Little Misses,” said licensing
manager Sabrina Segalov. “While bright and colourful, they are
in keeping with her fine art background.”
Charlotte studied at The Princes School of Traditional Arts
before embarking on a Fine Arts degree at the Chelsea College
of Art and Design, with a semester at The Emily Carr University
of Art and Design in Vancouver.
Charlotte said, “Being an artist is a way of life; we choose our
path and make own choices, life has its ways of taking you to
places you didn’t know existed. There are no limitations to our
imagination.”
How will your
insurance company
deal with your claim
after the floods?
The heavy rains in December have left many people
wondering how their Insurance policy will respond to the
damages caused.
The nature and intensity of the rainfall means that instead
of being picked up by the Insurance Companies, the
majority of the claims will be dealt with and indemnified by
the Consorcio.
So who and what is 'The Consorcio de Compensacion de
Seguros'? It is in fact a central compensation fund which is
funded by a very small percentage of the sums insured on
every Insurance policy sold in Spain and which is run by the
Government. It's been in existence since 1941, and is designed
to compensate victims with Insurance cover for losses resultant
from "extraordinary events", such as earthquake, tsunami,
terrorism & floods.
The claims coming in from the recent intense rain tend to be
either flooding into ground floors, basements, gardens and the
like from rain water penetrating from the street, as the usual
courses for water could handle no more, or damage caused by
water penetrating from walls, roofs or 1st floor and above terraces
which could not evacuate the water quickly enough and ended up
overflowing into the apartment. The former claims from flooding
will be dealt with by the Consorcio whilst the latter claims will be
dealt with by the Insurance Company themselves.
Just to be clear - the Consorcio will only intervene if the property
which suffered the damage had at the time of the loss been Insured.
If you have had the misfortune of suffering a loss during the recent
flooding, you should first contact your Insurance Broker or Agent who
should be able to advise you whether the loss falls into the Consorcio
category or the Insurance Company, or indeed a combination of both.
Your Broker / Agent should then be able to register the loss on your
behalf with the relevant entity and offer you advice and assistance
throughout the claims process.
Obviously, there will be some delays in getting around to visit victims
of the flooding, but the Consorcio have drafted in 100 loss adjusters
from other regions to complement those already on the ground in
Malaga, and in our experience, once they visit the damaged property,
they tend to be quick, efficient and fair.
Given that it may be a few days before a loss adjuster comes to
visit your home, we would suggest that you;
• Take photos of any damage to buildings and/or contents.
• Undertake any necessary cleaning, repairs etc and be sure to
conserve any invoices, etc for the loss adjuster.
• Prepare a list of damaged items.
• Prior to throwing out any damaged items, conserve them until
a loss adjuster has had a chance to inspect them.
• Take whatever reasonable steps are necessary to minimise
the impact of a claim.
It seems that many Insurance Companies, brokers or agents are
telling their clients to lodge the claim themselves with the Consorcio
- quite a daunting task in a foreign country, but if you need to do so
it can be done by phone on 902 222 665 or 952 367 042 or via web
http://www.consorseguros.es/web/inicio.
Op de Beeck & Worth's commitment is to handle and respond
with maximum speed to the claims our clients have suffered, and
our week started at 06,30 on Sunday morning with our first client
suffering a flood in the basement and staff quarters of their Villa, and
has not stopped since. We have opened in excess of 120 claims,
over 70 of which are with the Consorcio, and will over the next few
days & weeks be following up on the claims in an effort to ensure that
our clients can get on with their lives as quickly as possible.
Catastrophe's such as Malaga experienced last weekend bring to
light the importance of having the correct insurance in place for those
times when we feel the full force of nature. With this in mind we would
encourage you to review your Insurance Policies, and make sure that
you have the correct cover in place and that it will respond as you
would like in the event of a loss.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY
2017ASTROLOGY
FORECAST
Aries
21 MAR – 20 APR
2017 begins with you building on
something you started in 2016. It
now gains momentum propelling you
down a road lit with green lights and
marked ‘Success ahead!’ Don’t allow
self doubt to creep in or question
whether you are doing the right thing
or not. If you meet with resistance
it’s just a sign to change your tactics
slightly. However, if you laid the
right foundations last year, this
year should see you achieve more
than you imagined possible - and
possibly even in more than one area.
Romance and partnerships provide
you with not just happiness but also
potential for success. Embrace the
idea it takes two. What’s holding you
back? Only your own thoughts so
ditch any negativity now.
Gemini
22 MAY – 21 JUNE
Romance remains a distinct
possibility for most of 2017 while
cultivating a light hearted, optimistic
and playful mindset turns you into
an attraction magnet. I could say ‘Be
careful what you wish for’ as you’re
likely to get it. Whatever you do,
don’t become jaded or cynical as
this will block the flow for you. You
could find yourself in the spotlight
in some way this year - or else be
rubbing shoulders with those who
make their living being in it. Act like
a Kardashian with a touch of old
Hollywood glamour thrown in. If you
do find yourself associating with
the ‘A’ list of the rich understand
it’s because you belong there with
them. Star quality? You’ve got it so
work it now.
Leo
24 JULY – 23 AUG
Showcasing your talents and
strutting your stuff is on the agenda
- as is the validation that follows.
Let people know what you can do
and don’t undersell yourself now.
You’re in an enviable position when
it comes to marketing yourself and
getting your ideas across. Thing
is, people are more receptive than
they have been for a very long time.
You’ll soon discover you’re getting
a ‘Yes’ answer far more often than
a ‘No’ but have the courage to put
yourself out there and discover
which one it is going to be. Any
knock-backs will be shrugged off
and successes snagged in their
wake. That ‘lucky’ break could be
the result but talent more than luck is
the determining factor.
Taurus
21 APR – 20 MAY
Thinking on your feet could have
become second nature to you lately.
By now you should have learned
not to get too attached to plans
as recently they have the habit
of changing suddenly. There is a
reason behind this if they do and
that is to break you free of any ruts
you may have fallen into. Learning
to say ‘No’ and to channel your
energy and resources into only that
which truly fires up your soul results
in a happier you. Right now the
universe has a plan for you and the
New Year could see you connect
with someone who could have a
major influence on the direction
life is taking you. Whether this is a
romantic connection or not - that’s a
possibility only you can explore.
Cancer
22 JUNE – 23 JULY
Keep your focus on a long term
goal and understand nothing
that’s really worth having yields
overnight results. Knowing you
have what it takes - including
the determination to stick it out
for the long haul, brings you an
increased sense of self-worth and
satisfaction. It’s time to discover
just what you are capable of. A
new, healthier, fitter and sexier
you may emerge from all this as
a result but that is just one of the
pay-offs. You suddenly see the
journey itself is the goal and that
money can’t buy you this kind of
experience. The rewards are there
waiting to be claimed and may
end up exceeding your wildest
expectations. Stay on your path.
Virgo
24 AUG – SEPT 3
Money continues to be in focus and
your bank account should reflect
the positive shift during 2017.
Unfortunately, your ability to spend
it as fast as it comes in may also
increase. It’s important to have
a long term financial goal in the
back of your mind and direct your
resources towards that - and not the
urge to splurge. By all means reward
yourself, but keep it within reason.
The same goes for being generous
with those you love. Remember
there are other ways to show you
care rather than going overboard
with gifts. You have the opportunity
to build a financial future that
sustains you in the long term rather
than just shopping till you drop.
Which are you going to choose?
Libra
24 SEPT – 23 OCT
You’re in a cycle of new beginnings
where anything seems possible. In
fact, you’re in your best potential
cycle for 12 years. It’s time to
think big and launch those dreams
skyward. Provided it is something
you love and have fun doing, put
immediate financial rewards on the
backburner so long as you can get
by right now. The money will follow
but that passionate vibe you’re
projecting attracts the right people -
in business and in romance. Travel
continues to feature and don’t be
surprised if unlooked for benefits
flow from people overseas. Get set
to make an impression in 2017.
This is most definitely your year
Libra, lots of big dreams to
make a reality, money and travel
explorations. Enjoy!
Sagittarius
23 NOV – 21 DEC
Restrictions and frustrations are
followed by amazing breakthroughs
the moment you let go and stop
struggling. Something may have
come to an end in 2016 - either
through your actions or via change
being forced on you. Don’t worry
if this is the case as chances are
the situation has been lived out.
You probably already know this
deep inside. There’s a bold new
beginning to follow and if you have
the courage to take it when it is
offered, you’ll enter a new cycle of
self-empowerment and the ability to
direct your life where you want it to
go. Just remember that sometimes
opportunity arrives in disguise or
doesn’t look quite how we thought
it would. That doesn’t mean you
shouldn’t accept it however.
Aquarius
21 JAN – 19 FEB
New people may just be vying to
join Team Aquarius now. Be on the
look out for older, more experienced,
influential and successful people
who just may want to help you
in some way - with no apparent
agenda in mind. Being yourself with
no apologies is your key to getting
them on your side. You could find
yourself in a position where you are
dealing with large groups of people
or interacting with them in new ways
this year. Don’t be afraid to showcase
your ideas - no matter how radical or
different from the mainstream they
may be. Someone out there is looking
for someone just like you, whether it
is on a professional or personal level.
Your key to success is owning who
you are, and what you and you alone
have to offer.
Scorpio
24 OCT – 22 NOV
Superficial people are likely to get
short shift from you now as you’re
seeking something deeper and more
meaningful across all areas. You
want to delve below the surface and
explore the spiritual side of love. If
your present partner (if you have
one) can’t or isn’t ready to join you
on this journey, you may attract
one that is. Singles may encounter
someone they feel they have known
before and if so, consider the
fact you have. The past becomes
relevant again in some way so ask
what you have learned from it if you
don’t want to repeat it. The further
back you look the further forward
you can see - you have the power to
shape the future you want.
Capricorn
22 DEC – 20 JAN
Life’s big questions could continue
to occupy your thoughts as 2017
begins. Such as what’s your
purpose, where are you going and
who should you be going there with?
You’ll see all too clearly cause and
effect - or karma, at work in your life
and in the lives of those around you.
You’ll also be aware of how your
choices in the past have shaped
where you are in the present. It’s
time to tie up loose ends and settle
any outstanding debts - whether on a
material or a spiritual level and then
move on unencumbered. So, what’s
the purpose of all this? To make new
choices and now you see what the
right ones are to create that success
you’ve been after.
Pisces
20 FEB – 20 MAR
Big changes lie ahead in 2017. This
could see you in a position where you
have more money and/or resources
at your disposal. Or you could benefit
from another’s generosity. If you are
in a position where you have access
to someone else’s resources, ensure
you keep all dealings above board and
transparent. If you have given someone
else access to your resources, please
ensure they are trustworthy. This year
is all about personal power for you.
Other Pisceans could be looking at
moving in with a lover as a relationship
gets more serious or even moving
countries if that has been your ambition
for a while. Get ready for a powerful
shift that reflects the changes that are
already occurring within.
it on Nicole King,
You’ve just celebrated your 100 th
It took me a bit by surprise, suddenly
How did you celebrate?
Thanks to Linea Directa who sponsored the
an informal gathering to try and show my
appreciation for all their help; I couldn’t have
lasted this long without their support.
What sets Marbella Now apart
from other online TV shows?
Marbella is very much about glitz and
glamour but our passion is exploring behind
the scenes and understanding the mix that
makes so many people, regardless of their
financial position, race or religion, regard
Marbella as home and try to harness that
to create a consolidated and empathetic
international community.
Any exciting plans for shows in
2017 you can reveal at this stage?
We’ve just launched a new sign language
section with a young student Rowan
Litchfield of Laude School to help us learn
to be more communicative and we will
be holding our 2 nd United Nationalities
summit on 25 th April 2017 at the Laude
School. The aim is to put our international
brains together and find solutions to
community issues, whether regarding
sustainability, more artisan and farmers
markets, or alternative transport around
our city, helping the elderly, being
neighbourly, helping promote tourism on
an all year round basis, activities for teens
etc. Together we can work wonders.
Is it true the saying in TV… never
work with children or animals?
It may be, but not for us; our show is
natural, fun and about life, plus we always
have a Triple A dog for adoption who
comes to the recordings and we love kids
– the more the merrier!!
What is the most embarrassing
thing that’s ever happened to
you while presenting a show?
The love of my life answering the phone
and talking, loudly…and seeing people
see me give him “the look”!
Now a bit about you Nicole,
what's your nickname?
I don’t have one; well, not that I know of.
What couldn't you live without?
My family and a nice cup of tea.
What´s your greatest
achievement?
My kids are all grown up and they still talk
to us and think we’re great!
BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?
Three things by my dad:
• Always write things in your diary, you
never know when you’ll need to go back
and check something up
• It’s not what you know that matters, or
who you know, it’s who knows you
• Never fool yourself.
Favourite film of all time?
Love Actually.
What are you listening to?
Terry Shaughnessy & The Universal.
Funniest pick up line used on you?
“If I said you had a beautiful body would
you hold it against me,” sung like the
song, which wasn’t funny, but I promptly
slapped him and everyone thought that
was funny.
Best pick up line you’ve used?
I don’t like you very much.
What did you want to be
growing up?
A barrister or an actress.
Best character trait?
Honest.
Worst habit?
Being Honest!
What do you do to relax?
Paint, play the piano, hang out with family
& friends.
Friday night out or Sunday day in?
Sunday in! Unless there’s a charity event.
Best thing about living in Spain?
We all say the sun, but it’s true; the light
here is special, it makes getting up and
being happy easier; I just feel like I’m
“home.”
Worst thing?
I’ll tell you that’s easy - “mañana”!!
