Since 1774, we’ve been thinking of ways that we – the inventor of the footbed – can make the lives of
our customers better and richer – with a good shoe for all conceivable situations in life. In a primarily
price-driven consumer world, dominated by cheap products, BIRKENSTOCK, with it’s premium-quality
products, offers a reasonable alternative for those who place value in functionality, durability and
sustainability.
We manufacture our sandals in Germany in our own production facilities with an extensive amount of
work done by hand. Every sandal undergoes 17 single production steps before the finished product
is ready. It takes well over 100 highly skilled production steps for our closed-toe models. These
high-quality products are made in workshops in Portugal in accordance with the principles of a
centuries-old tradition of hand craftsmanship.
Whether produced by hand or using industrial methods – all BIRKENSTOCK products meet the highest
quality standards in the shoe industry anywhere in the world. This applies just as much to our sandals
and closed-toe shoes as it does to our bags and socks.

THE ORIGINAL
BIRKENSTOCK FOOTBED
The heart of all models is the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed. The construction has been thought out to the smallest details imitates a footprint in the
sand. The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed provides shock absorption and the gripping motion needed to keep the shoe on your foot provide exercise and
may improve circulation. The anatomical moldings, may relieve pressure when you walk, helping to provide relief for your feet, joints and back.

01 | HEEL CUP
The molding in the heel area supports the heel
tissue and holds the heel bone firmly in its
natural position.
02 | LONGITUDINAL ARCH SUPPORT
The arch support that runs along the side of the
footbed surrounds the tarsal bone inside and out.
As a result, they provide the foot with the stability
it needs when taking steps, while supporting and
strengthening the inner arch. It stabilizes the
back of the foot, therefore improving gait and
coordination.
03 | HEEL MOLD
The outer arch support promotes movement that
is easy on the joints and reduces the likelihood of
twisting your ankle. The heel mold activates the
calf muscles, stabilizes the back of the foot, and
improves gait and coordination.
04 | TRANSVERSE ARCH SUPPORT
This support, which runs through the middle
of the footbed, stabilizes the metatarsal bone,
reduces the pressure on the balls of the feet
and helps prevent splayfoot. In this way, the
transverse arch support helps ensure that the foot
has a naturally straight and solid stance.
05 | TOE GRIP
Raised indentations are applied to the front of
the footbed near the toes. Thanks to the toe grip,
the toes remain relaxed in their natural position.
It also supports the natural flexing action while
walking.
06 | FOOTBED EDGE
The footbed is drawn up especially high at the
front end. As a result, the high footbed edge
protects the toes during the rolling movements
of the foot.
07 | FIRST LAYER OF JUTE
The first layer of jute forms the basis of our footbed.
It helps bond the natural cork and latex core.
08 | CORK AND LATEX FOOTBED
The cork and latex footbed is the heart of all
BIRKENSTOCK shoes. The shock-absorbing and
highly flexible cork and latex core supports and
relieves pressure on feet. The natural material is
heat and cold insulating and keeps feet fresh.
09 | SECOND LAYER OF JUTE
The second layer of jute is placed around the
sides of the footbed. This increases the flexibility
of the footbed and makes a significant contribution
to its durability. This layer of thick, absorbent
jute helps regulate moisture.
10 | SUEDE LINING
The suede lining absorbs moisture. This natural
property of the high-quality top layer helps to
keep feet fresh.
FOAM INSERT (ONLY ON THE SOFT FOOTBED)
The soft footbed is padded with an anatomically
shaped foam inlay. It contains millions of tiny air
bubbles which provide an especially comfortable
wearing experience.

LAYER BY LAYER
PURE FUNCTIONALITY
The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed combines natural materials from sustainable
sources with outstanding functionality. The smooth suede lining is the first layer
that delivers comfort. It is wonderfully soft, absorbing moisture and wicking it
away to the thickly woven jute layer below. Underneath this, the cork and latex
core forms the heart of the footbed. It cushions impacts and supports the foot
every step of the way. The stabilizing design is rounded off with a layer of coarse
jute and the sturdy EVA outsole providing the foot with additional relief.
Anyone who wants their shoes to be a bit softer should opt for the BIRKENSTOCK
soft footbed. Here, a permanently elastic latex cushion has been inserted right
below the suede lining. It gently cushions every step and always returns to its
original form. Like walking on air!
TWO WIDTHS FOR A PERFECT FIT
If you’ve ever bought shoes, you’ll be familiar with the problem that most models
only come in one width. You’ll usually find yourself looking in vain for different
widths. Things are different at BIRKENSTOCK. Because no two feet are the same,
our original footbed is not only available in the regular width, but all models are
also available in a slimmer width for slender feet.
All you have to do is adjust the straps – and your BIRKENSTOCK shoes will fit
perfectly. Look for these symbols when choosing your shoes:

EACH ONE OF OUR SHOES
COMES WITH A FOOTBED
Anyone who talks about footbeds is actually talking about BIRKENSTOCK. While it
is now synonymous with extraordinary comfort, the term itself was first used by
BIRKENSTOCK in the 1930s for anatomically shaped insoles that provide special
supportive characteristics. Unlike other orthopedic inserts at the time, which were
designed to support and treat ailing feet, the footbed was conceived in order to
promote the maintenance of healthy feet.
The carefully thought out construction imitates the footprint of a foot in sand, to
make sure your feet feel as comfortable as possible for hours on end. Just like
our sandals, our closed-toe shoes also come with a footbed. With its anatomical
contours, the footbed reduces pressure and supports the natural rolling movement
of your feet.
The flexible cork and latex core, which is the heart for all footwear at
BIRKENSTOCK – right down to the present. The result is unbeatable wearing
comfort.
Today, only natural materials from sustainable sources are used in the original
BIRKENSTOCK footbed: light natural cork, select jute, high-quality natural latex,
and handpicked suede as the lining. The velvety soft suede lining makes for
moisture-regulating and absorbent properties in our closed-toe models.
This promotes well-being and a comfortable foot climate when wearing our
closed-toe models barefoot.

why we’re always on the lookout for the most sustainable sources and the latest materials with the best BIRKENSTOCK qualities.
NATURAL LEATHER
Natural leather can be recognized by its naturally textured surface. It reflects
the beauty and goodness of leather – a valuable natural resource – in its
unmistakable appearance and its entire nature. BIRKENSTOCK purposely does not
treat surfaces and other specific features. Every leather product is unique, with
the material left the way nature intended. We use carefully selected leather with
a thickness of 2.8 to 3.2 millimeters for our uppers.
SMOOTH LEATHER
Smooth leather has a characteristic full-grain surface, with the natural texture
left unchanged. The surface finish can be adjusted in various ways, such as
aniline or nappa. It has a particularly uniform and exceptionally fine-grain
surface. This leather is especially durable, with external influences having little
effect on it. So if you take good care of them, you will enjoy your smooth leather
shoes and sandals for a long time.
PATENT-COATED LEATHER
The term “patent-coated leather” comprises fashionable varieties of leather
with finished surfaces. Thanks to the many different types of design, film, and
embossing, there are almost no limits to the coatings used and the looks that
can be created.
NAPPED LEATHER
Napped leather is an umbrella term for leather varieties without the characteristic
texture on the surface. These leathers are buffed on the surface (nubuck), or the
surface is removed (suede). The tone of the color and surface may change over
time – or the look may alter due to the appearance of a natural patina.
VELOURS LEATHER
Velours leather, which is also known colloquially as suede, has a rough, fibrous,
soft and therefore flexible surface. It is open-pored, so it is especially breathable.
The open structure can make it susceptible to dirt, but this can easily be removed
with a brush.
NUBUCK LEATHER
Nubuck leather has a gently buffed surface. The buffing process smooths the
natural texture of the surface, making it pleasantly velvety and soft. As with
velvet, brushing the surface of nubuck leather displaces the fibers leaving a
visible trace and changing its appearance in different lights. The fine fibers on the
buffed surface are highly sensitive to moisture and dust. Impregnation or gentle
cleaning with a brush can help to protect it against soiling.
BIRKO-FLOR
This material, which has been specially developed by BIRKENSTOCK, offers an
alternative to leather. The upper layer is made of an easy-care – and therefore
hygienic – synthetic material. The inside is lined with a soft, moisture-regulating
layer of fleece. This high-quality material is very gentle on the skin, and it is soft
and comfortable while also being very durable. It also boasts a warming effect,
which means that Birko-Flor models can also be worn in cooler temperatures. The
material can be dyed in many different colors. The large selection of designs
offers a variety of styles.

WOOL FELT
Wool felt is one of the oldest textiles in the world. It is a high-quality, natural fiber
made from sheep’s wool – and boasts many valuable properties. It is gentle on
your skin, elastic, breathable, heat- and cold-insulating and keeps feet fresh.
FELT
Felt is a very thick material made from mixed fibers. The felts used by
BIRKENSTOCK are especially comfortable, breathable and soft to the touch. At the
same time, they are very robust and highly durable.

The MADRID model has been in the market since 1963, making it the oldest member of the BIRKENSTOCK family. It’s Birko-Flor version with patent finish,
successfully bridges the gap between functionality and design. Birko-Flor, a material developed by BIRKENSTOCK, has been given a fashion update by
applying a patent finish, but still retains its easy-care and skin-friendly properties.

Manufacturing shoes is all about craftsmanship. Our closed-toe models are made
by master craftspeople in Portugal, a country with a tradition of shoemaking
that stretches back many generations. Over the centuries, various methods have
emerged. First and foremost, they differ in terms of how the upper and sole of the
shoes are brought together. Depending on the requirements the shoe must meet,
BIRKENSTOCK uses the five methods below – all of which are tried and true.
Let’s start with flexible stitching. Here, the shaft is turned outward and stitched to
a midsole. The outsole is then placed on this midsole and fixed with adhesive. The
WESTFORD and HARRIS models are examples of this flexible stitching method.
A widespread alternative to stitching involves the use of adhesive to bond the
shaft to the sole. This is made possible thanks to the AGO construction method.
In 1911, an Italian tanner developed an adhesive that made it possible to bond
two different leather surfaces for the first time ever. The AGO (“another great
opportunity”) method revolutionized industrial shoe production. In this completely
adhesive-based construction method, the shaft is pinched inward and stuck to the
midsole and outsole. “Pinching,” refers to the process of pulling the leather over
the last prior to adhesion. We use the AGO method to produce models such as the
CINCINNATI or CELINA. Other models are being “stitched” in term. Here, the shaft
and midsole are “married” by means of a looped seam. The midsole is then stuck
to the sole. The ARRAN is one shoe manufactured this way.
“Opanak” refers to a method that involves stitching the leather shaft directly onto
the outsole – by hand. It takes a seamster/seamstress more than half an hour to
stitch one pair of these shoes. The PASADENA is made using the Opanak method.
Last but not least, we also make shoes using our very own method, with the entire
shoe being built around the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed. These models are fully
pinched and bonded following the AGO method. They stand out for their footbed
also serveing as the midsole, just in a sandals. The LONDON model is produced
using this process.
The production process for a closed-toe BIRKENSTOCK shoe is extremely complex
and involves 100 to 120 highly demanding individual steps that are traditionally
completed in group production. Each step of each production process is handled by
a specialized department. As soon as one department has completed its assigned
task, the shoe is passed on to the next department. These specialized departments
start with the model department, which develops prototypes and designs and manufactures
lasts and cutting tools. Another department is the cutting department.
Here, the pieces of leather are cut to size or punched before being pared. The next
stage sees the sewing department stitch all components to the shaft.
In an intermediate step, the shoe is given its characteristic form, i.e. the rounded
contours of the heel and the front section. This is the result of a carefully calibrated

interplay of heat and cold. First of all, the leather is heated to a temperature of
100 to 120°C and then undergoes a cold treatment immediately afterwards. As a
result, the leather is given “thermal shock,” causing it to solidify quickly and
retain its form permanently. The levels of heat and cold are monitored continuously
and adjusted as necessary.
The assembly department then attaches the shaft to the sole. Depending on the
model and the construction method used, this is done either using the signature
BIRKENSTOCK adhesion process – which has been refined over many decades – or
by sticking and stitching the shoe components. Both methods ask for a phenomenal
amount of craftsmanship and skill on the part of the shoemakers.
The process is concluded with the finishing stage. At this final stage of processing
and refinement, we take a careful look at the entire shoe. After all, every single
customer is entitled to a flawless product. Care lotion and polish are applied
by hand to every single shoe – and shoelaces fitted. However, even the best
manufacturing process in the world doesn’t count for much if the quality of the
raw materials is not up to the mark. The finest leather and the very best soles
are used to make our closed-toe shoes. Therefore, every production process at
BIRKENSTOCK starts with an inspection of the materials. Every single leather hide
is put under the microscope by specialists, who perform a chemical analysis of
the contents, inspect the coloration and search for impairments such as holes,
scars and other natural defects. We examine the thickness and surface characteristics
of the leather. Does the entire piece of material meet our expectations? Does
it have the necessary degree of suppleness throughout or is there a risk that the
material could become brittle? It takes years of experience to perform this kind of
quality inspection.
Also the various soles undergo a similar quality check – each one conducted by
hand. BIRKENSTOCK has exceptionally high quality standards. Compliance with
these exacting standards entails a high degree of complex and ongoing checks.
These apply not only to our production facilities, but also to our suppliers.
It goes almost without saying that all our closed-toe models are fitted with an
original BIRKENSTOCK footbed, but with an ingenious difference: on most models,
the footbed has only been inserted into the shoe and can therefore be easily
removed. As a result, it is not only replaceable, but the footbed and shoe can be
dried quickly and thoroughly. In turn, this considerably extends the lifetime of the
leather and the shoe as a whole.

A shoe should fit well. It should surround the foot, providing it with protection and
stability, without constricting it. This is particularly important for children’s shoes
as their feet are still growing. The bone, muscle and tissue structures are still very
soft and malleable. Not only do tight shoes that pinch feel uncomfortable – over
time, they can also lead to the development of foot problems.
There is a similar effect when shoes are too wide. In this case, too, the feet do
not have sufficient stability and slide from side to side inside the shoe. Your toes
are being crushed just as much as they are in shoes that are too small. Your foot
can also slide back and forth in the heel area. This poses a risk to ligaments and
muscles.
In addition to the size, width and cut of the shoe as well as the height of the heel,
the shape of the foot is important. The most critical factor for the right fit is shoe
size. Feet need enough space in the front part of the shoe. This is because as
the foot rolls, the toes slide forward. If the shoe is too tight in the front, the toes
will be crushed with every step. So shoes that are too short are bad for your feet.
That’s why shoes should always be one thumb width longer in the toe area than
your foot.
So a good fit is extraordinarily important for foot health. That’s why the original
BIRKENSTOCK footbed is available in two widths (normal and slim). The anatomical
moldings in the bed support the natural tissue in your feet and provide them
with stability and grip. Our models are also adjustable. So BIRKENSTOCK sandals
and shoes can be adapted to fit to your feet. This ensures a high level of comfort.
Healthy kids’ feet that also look stylish in spring/summer 2017.
But the shoe should not be too big either. A shoe that is too big will prevent your
foot from rolling correctly and can, in some cases, affect the way you walk. If your
toes have too much room, your foot will lose control of the shoe. Your foot will
then push against the tip of the shoe during the rolling motion. This impact can
damage your joints.
