The Workforce Development program provides workforce training to the citizens of Meridian and Lauderdale County.<br />

The training is conducted in accordance with the Workforce Education Project Policies as developed by the Mississippi<br />

Community College Board.<br />

The program’s goals:<br />

• To provide the citizens of Mississippi the skills needed to be more productive and have an improved quality of life.<br />

• To provide the employers of our state a better trained and educated workforce.<br />

• To train for higher skilled and higher wage jobs for existing business, industry and employees in our state.<br />

Financial assistance for companies from the MCCB, grants and Workforce Investment Act (WIOA) funds are available<br />

for some services and classes and professional and technical assistance is often available from state resource pools.<br />

MCC’s Workforce Development Center is located at 1524 Hwy 19 North, one mile north of MCC. Credit, certificate<br />

programs in Industrial Maintenance Technology and Welding and Cutting are housed in this facility. Other courses in<br />

the Workforce Development Center are pre-employment training, lean manufacturing, basic electricity, plumbing and<br />

OSHA training.<br />

ABE/HSE Class<br />

Individuals may enroll in free ABE/HSE classes<br />

located in the Ralph E. Young, Jr. Center for<br />

Adult Basic Education. Classes are offered<br />

in the morning, afternoon and evenings. All<br />

candidates are required to take a diagnostic<br />

test to determine their basic skills knowledge.<br />

Workforce classes are available for active ABE<br />

students. Classes include welding, carpentry,<br />

basic electricity, healthcare information<br />

English Second Language<br />

English as a Second Language (ESL) at MCC<br />

is taught to prepare immigrants to participate<br />

fully in our English speaking community and<br />

prepare them for citizenship. MCC provides<br />

ESL instruction at no charge (free) for area<br />

Literacy Class<br />

Do you know someone who wants/<br />

needs to learn to read? Adults can come<br />

to MCC to join our literacy program. We<br />

offer small group learning environments with<br />

students on the same educational skill level.<br />

Upon availability we place students with a<br />

volunteer tutor and they work one-on-one<br />

to improve their reading skills. Cost: Free.<br />

Every graduate that receives a HSE<br />

at MCC receives one free class.<br />

Opportunity Act (WIOA)<br />

Funding Liaison<br />

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity<br />

Act (WIOA) assists students with funding<br />

for training. The purpose of this funding<br />

is to increase the employment retention<br />

and earnings of participants. If you are an<br />

unemployed or dislocated adult who has been<br />

unable to obtain jobs through core services<br />

or if you are employed but need additional<br />

services to reach self-sufficiency, you may<br />

be eligible for training under the Workforce<br />

Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of<br />

2014.<br />

The CCNA Routing and<br />

Switching curriculum is a gateway<br />

quadshield coax cable, VoIP and smart homes.<br />

Fiber Optic Cabling<br />

This 30-hour class provides students with a<br />

theoretical and hands-on knowledge of fiber<br />

optics. Attendees learn the basics of cable<br />

termination, testing and troubleshooting<br />

while using the sophisticated fiber optics<br />

analysis equipment. Students will terminate<br />

fiber optic cables and ST and SC connectors,<br />

two of the industry standards and perform<br />

a mechanical splice as well as explore the<br />

theory of fiber optics and calculate a system<br />

loss budget. Certifications will be awarded<br />

by C-Tech with successful completion of the<br />

certification exam.<br />

Take advantage of hands-on APICS<br />

certification review and learn valuable<br />

techniques to become a leader in your field.<br />

An APICS CPIM instructor will lead you<br />

through interactive discussions, case studies,<br />

and strategic problem solving exercises to help<br />

you review for your next certification exam.<br />

Each module will be covered in approximately<br />

10 three-hour sessions. Participants will<br />

earn three CEUs per completed module.<br />

by local call centers. Attendees must be<br />

at least 18 years of age, have a Bronze or<br />

higher CRC and HSE or HS diploma. Both<br />

day and evening classes are available upon<br />

request.<br />

ServSafe Food Seminar<br />

Gain knowledge and training in food<br />

safety. Topics include sanitation, the flow<br />

of food through the operation and more.<br />

The $150 registration fee includes the cost<br />

of the textbook and processing the exam.<br />

It is important that fees be paid and book<br />

received two weeks prior to the seminar.<br />

Certification<br />

Manufacturing Skills Certification is a course<br />

designed to provide participants with general<br />

knowledge and skills needed to be successful<br />

in a modern manufacturing environment. Topics<br />

covered in this class includes: Basic computer,<br />

Blueprint Reading, Precision Measurement,<br />

Introduction to High-Performance Manufacturing,<br />

OSHA 10 hr. General Industry Certification and<br />

CPR. This class will help prepare individuals to<br />

work in a manufacturing environment, however<br />

Advanced Stroke Life Support ®<br />

(ASLS)<br />

ASLS is a practical, hands-on, eight-hour<br />

course that was developed by experts in<br />

stroke, emergency medicine, prehospital<br />

care and nursing education through The<br />

Michael S. Gordon Center for Research<br />

in Medical Education at the University of<br />

Miami. It provides a unique neurological<br />

assessment tool-the MEND exam-ideal<br />

for both prehospital and hospital use and<br />

satisfies the educational requirements for<br />

Joint Commission-certified stroke centers. A<br />

key feature of the ASLS ® curriculum is handson<br />

skills training, during which instructors<br />

simulate stroke syndromes, and learners<br />

perform the MEND Examination, a unique<br />

neurological assessment tool developed with<br />

the course. Computer-based multimedia<br />

skills training, interactive discussions and<br />

didactic sessions are also components of the<br />

curriculum. Participants learn to describe<br />

why early treatment may result in a marked<br />

reduction in risk of disability, identify the<br />

five main stroke syndromes and relate<br />

them to pathophysiology and clinical signs<br />

and perform focused evaluation to identify<br />

stroke, its location and severity, and t-PA<br />

years after completing initial training. It will<br />

have a dual function of serving as a review and<br />

National Standard objectives and is state<br />

approved. The Paramedic refresher is made<br />

up of six eight-hour blocks for a total of 48<br />
