We are not alone, as I witnessed on my 

drive to work today. Nearly every home had 

an extra bag or two stacked alongside their 

regular disposal bin on the curb. In many 

places there were bright colored boxes as 

well — evidence of the presence of young 

children in that particular home — and that 

made me smile. 

At the four-way stop by the school, I waited 

for another vehicle to turn. As the driver 

and vehicle pulled past me I thought her car 

was making a really odd noise. Perhaps the 

crunchy sound was from her tires grabbing 

hold of the icy accumulation on the street? 

I looked into my rear-view mirror and 

quickly diagnosed the problem: a white 

garbage bag and plastic garbage can were 

wedged beneath her car and being pulled 

along down the street. I watched for a 

moment and wondered about how to get 

her attention. But with school busses and 

parents dropping kids off, there was no easy 

way to turn around and head the opposite 

direction.

The holiday season may be over, 

but there is still plenty to enjoy 

about the winter season. 

The joys of winter are many and the 

Dickinson County Nature Center is 

ready to share some of the fun with 

some nature lovers of a young age. 

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the nature 

center is kicking off its Nature Tots 

programs for the new year. 

“Nature Tots is a program for toddlers 

ages 2-5 and their parents or 

guardians. The goal is to get kids 

excited about the outdoors and to 

encourage them to ask questions,” 

said Kiley Roth, the community relations 

coordinator at the nature center. 

“With children this age, our naturalists 

cannot pass on all of their extensive 

environmental knowledge, but 

they can help foster an appreciation 

for nature in kids and get them excited 

to head outside on a daily basis.” 

The Nature Tots program meets 

the second Wednesday every month 

and offers two sessions, the first in 

the morning at 10:30 a.m. and an 

afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. Each 

session is capped at 25 children, so 

parents or guardians are encouraged 

to call and register their children early. 

The first Nature Tots of the year will 

celebrate the season and has been 

titled, “Wintertime Walk.” 

“We will focus on snow and how 

animals survive through the winter,” 

said naturalist Charles Vigdal. 

The tots and their guardians will 

hear a story about how different animals 

make it through the Iowa winter. 

After the story, the kids will make 

snow art and will go on a prairie hike. 

“Dress for the weather, because we 

will be going outside. Wintertime 

is a really great time to see wildlife, 

because a lot of animals are moving 

around trying to find food. It’s also 

easier to see them on the white backdrop, 

and you can see their paw prints 

in the snow,” Vigdal said. 

“We will find evidence of animals 

and see other winter patterns in nature. 

I put some apples outside and 

animals have been eating them, so 

we’ll look for other signs of animals 

in nature.” 

Each Nature Tots program lasts about 

45 minutes to an hour and features a 

lesson, outdoor time and a craft. 

Last year’s Nature Tots programs 

were very successful, but many of the 

staff particularly enjoyed one session, 

Get Muddy. 

“Parents were encouraged to dress 

their children in old clothes, and we 

went to the Nature Playscape to make 

mud pies, search for worms and paint 

with colored mud. Kids were streaked 

with dirt, peeled off their shoes to 

squish their toes in the mud and just 

beamed,” Roth said. “It was so much 

fun to see kids loving the simplicity 

of getting dirty. So often we overthink 

what it takes to entertain children. 

They had a wonderful time just being 

allowed to explore the world in any 

way they wanted that day.” 

And, for the team at the nature center, 

it doesn’t matter if it’s summer or 

winter, they want to encourage people 

of all ages to explore and enjoy nature. 

“Our goal for Nature Tots is always 

just to get kids excited about the environment,” 

Roth said. “If they have fun 

hiking, learning about animals and 

playing outside when they are kids, 

then they will have a passion for the 

outdoors when they are adults and 

hopefully make a difference in the 

conservation world.” F 


Music 

& wine 

Round Lake Vineyards and Winery 

has quite a day on tap for Sunday, 

Jan. 15. 

They’ll be hosting a series of tank 

tastings and they’ll also have Okobojifavorite 

Chad Elliott on the mic. 

Elliott will be performing in the 

afternoon in a concert that will be 

completely free to the public. 

“People can come and enjoy a glass 

of wine, a bottle of water or a beer 

and listen to Chad play,” said Heidi 

Petersen, an account manager with 

Round Lake Vineyards and Winery. 

“We love having him and it’s always an 

exciting time when he comes. We have 

him booked for the summer as well.” 

People are welcome to come and 

listen to Elliott play for the entire afternoon 

or they can attend one of the 

tank tastings before or after enjoying 

some good music. 

The tank tastings will take place at 

3, 5 and 7 p.m. Each time slot has 20 

spots available, but people need to 

register ahead of time to make sure 

their spot is saved. Reservations must 

be made by Jan. 12. 

The tank tasting is a special winery 

event that will be lead by Round Lake

“At the tank tasting you’ll actually 

be able to sample wine right from the 

tank and you will also get to taste the 

wine out of the bottle,” Petersen said. 

“We’ll also have some food available 

— some appetizers to help cleanse the 

palette between the tastings.” 

This event will feature all white 

wine as that is the wine that is made 

in the tanks. Another event, a barrel 

tasting, will be held later featuring the 

winery’s red wine. 

The tank tasting will be a great opportunity 

to learn more about wine 

and the entire winemaking process. 

“Scott and Jenny will be the ones 

running the event. They have been 

involved with every step of the process 

from growing the grapes, harvesting 

and through the process to bottling,” 

said Jennifer Schwarztrauber, the 

venue director at the winery. “This will 

be a great time to discuss the backgrounds 

of these wines.”

four different white wines in addition 

to an apple wine that serves as the 

base for their Skinny Dipping wines. F

Orange City Arts offers special classes for kids 

Whether it is learning to make 

magic or painting on a 

canvas, giving kids the opportunity 

to open their imaginations 

and create art of all types is essential 

according to the people at Orange 

City Arts. 

“Children need the arts. The arts inspire 

kids to think outside the box, to 

kick-start new ideas, to get a job done 

in another way, to empathize with 

others. That’s what this world needs! 

Besides, these classes are lots of fun,” 

said Janine Calsbeek, the executive 

director of Orange City Arts. 

Coming up soon, Orange City Arts 

is offering two classes aimed at helping 

kids explore their artistic horizons. 

The first class that will be offered 

is “Magicians in the Making” and it 

will be taught by local puppeteer and 

ventriloquist Lisa Laird. 

Laird uses magic tricks in many of 

her educational performances and 

she’ll be teaching some of those tricks 

to students in grades kindergarten 

through fifth grade. The kids will be 

able to create and practice tricks that 

use easy-to-find materials. 

They’ll present a magic show for 

friends and family at the end of the 

class. Sign up now because space is 

limited to 12 students per age category. 

Laird’s class will take place at the 

Orange City Town Hall community 

room on Wednesdays: Jan. 18 and 

Feb. 1 for students in kindergarten 

through second grade and Jan. 25 and 

Feb. 8 for students in grades 3-5 from 

3:45-4:45 p.m.

“I hope the kids in the magic class 

can practice some tricks and show 

off to their friends and families. And 

learn a bit about how illusionists do 

their work. Being a magician is being 

an actor — it’s theatre,” Calsbeek said.

We’ll offer another puppetry class 

with Lisa in April, but this time, it’s 

magic! The illusionists who came to

The class will be taught by Will 

Browning, a Northwestern art major. 

The classes will take place on Saturday, 

Feb. 11, at the Old Factory Coffee 

Shop. 

The class will be offered at 10 

for 

a.m.-11:30 a.m. for kids in kindergarten 

through first grade and from 

noon-1:30 p.m. for students in second 

through third grade. 

The kids will learn the basics of 

acrylic painting on canvas and they’ll 

be leaving the class with a completed 

work of art. The materials will be provided 

as well as Shirley Temples. 

Cost if registered before Feb. 4: $20; 

after Feb. 4: $30. Space is limited to 10 

participants per age category. 

“Kids love to paint … on anything 

and everything. But canvas is extra 

special. And Will Browning is an energetic 

art major from Northwestern 

College. He’s got lots of great ideas,” 

said Calsbeek. “And of course, who 

doesn’t want to go to Old Factory for 

a class?”

The Artists: 

Zheng Lianje - Born in 1962 in Beijing, 

actively working in New York and 

Beijing. The Art of Zheng Lianje is 

complex and amazing, his artistic appetite 

spread across the artistic landscape, 

including a vareity of artistic 

creation: behavior, device, conceptual 

photography, and even modern ink 

and wash. 

Five artists in one show. The new 

exhibit in the Goodenow Gallery 

displays quite a collection for the 

public to view from now through Feb. 

11, at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. 

“Floating Ink: Contemporary Chinese 

Art (2000-2016)” showcases 

the work of Lan Cheng, Wu Jun, Xue 

Yaojun, You Si and Zheng Lianjie. 

“In one show you have all these artists 

from China together,” performing 

arts director Amanda Schindler said. 

“You get to see their different styles 

and a genre we don’t get here all too 

often.” 

The traveling exhibit has been many 

places and allows visitors to explore 

the worlds of five distinct artists who in 

turn explore their own contemporary 

versions of classic Chinese styles of art. 

According to the exhibit pamphlet 

the artists “have been reinventing traditional 

forms to represent ideas and 

observations about their contemporary 

world. 

“Having deep knowledge of and 

respect for traditional forms, these artists 

revere their cultural heritage and 

art traditions at the same time freely 

experiment with them.” 

Bringing new and different works of 

art to the Lakes area is right in line with 

You Si - You Si is now commuting 

between Shanghai and New Jersey. 

Born in Shanghai to a family of artists. 

In the 1980s when the nation was beginning 

to open up and prosper, You 

Si became a rising start in Beijing’s art 

circle as he participated in numerous 

avant-garde experimental art exhibitions. 

Xue Yaojun - Born in 1965 in Beijing, 

now lives in Yixing, Jiangsu, China. 

Xue’s art is focused on represenationalism. 

He insists on combing techniques 

and concepts, expressing his 

inner voice through realistic style.

language to transform his subjects 

from passive roles into active roles. In 

his works, the “role” of his subject is 

not always clearly defined, which give 

his art meaning beyond the imagery 

and draw the viewer in for closer exploration 

of the work. 

Lan Cheng - Was born in 1979 in a 

small village in Guangxi region and 

now working in Guangzhou, China.

Reza brings his magical 

mastery to Grand Falls 

Reza’s dream has come true 

and he’s bringing it to the 

stage at Grand Falls Casino & 

Golf Resort in Larchwood. 

Whether it was magicians visiting 

his elementary school in his 

hometown of Brookings, SD, or 

watching specials on television, 

the world of illusion intrigued 

Reza beginning at a young age. 

“This has been a dream since I 

was a kid, begging my parents for a 

magic kit when I was six years old,” 

Reza said. 

The dream took a big step towards 

reality at 14 years old when 

Reza did a six-week run of shows in 

Branson, MO, perfecting his craft. 

“That was a stepping stone and 

launching pad with the amount 

of mentoring I received and the 

support system I developed there, 

it was great,” Reza said. “We started 

with a bunch of friends hitting 

the road, city to city, after that. It’s 

been about a 10-year process getting 

to the point we’re at now.” 

That point has brought Reza to 

Grand Falls Casino for the first 

time though he has performed 

several times in the area. His “Edge 

of Illusion” performance will wow 

the audience. 

Tickets cost $20 and the show 

takes place Sunday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. 

Guests who’ve been to a Reza 

show already can expect to be entertained 

all over again. 

“We’re always changing the 

show and there are a number of 

illusions that change from night 

to night,” Reza said. “It’s more an 

experience than a show with large 

scale, dynamic illusions and a lot 

of interactive ones where we get 

audience members on stage.”

These illusions are often a long 

time in the making as well. Anywhere 

from a few weeks to a few 

years go into taking an idea to the 

stage and involves music, choreography, 

costumes and much more. 

“It’s a constant process. A lot is 

inspired by music, which sparks 

an idea that we try to bring to life,” 

Reza said. 

The crowd at Grand Falls will 

be the beneficiary of all that hard 

work. And Reza hopes they come 

away from the show amazed, 

mystified, enthralled and perhaps 

most of all, inspired. 

“The instant feedback and energy 

from the crowd at shows is 

a huge reward for the work that 

goes into it and hopefully they see 

how I’ve followed my dream and 

it inspires them to follow theirs,” 

Reza said. “It’s more than magic. 

Our goal is to entertain and have 

the most skeptical folks feeling like 

kids again for a couple hours.” 

Prepare to step to the “Edge of 

Illusion” next weekend. Reza is
