Not to miss while on the island
Mallorca...
is a rather maligned tourist destination.
Deterred by stories of rowdy German
hordes in Ballermann, the German
nickname for Palma‘s neon-lit beach
party district, Angie steered clear of
Mallorca for years. That is until Alex
came about and set things right.
Alex, blissfully unaware of Ballermann‘s
existence, and always eager for a spot
of sun and sea after years of frigid
Canadian winters, pretty much fell in
love with Mallorca at first sight (as he
did with Angie).
So he craftily set about plotting how to
get his favourite girl off to his favourite
island, and BAM:
Off they went for their first vacation
together as a couple.
His strategy: Food – With a dining
scene fit to rival the most cosmopolitan
cities, Mallorca is a foodie‘s paradise.
Angie, as all who know her can attest
to, thinks about what‘s for dinner before
breakfast.
Mallorca brings back the fondest
memories of us embarking on our lives
together.
With this island as the spectacular
backdrop, we would like to share our
next momentous step with you.
We look forward to a weekend of great
cheer (and food)!
OUR TOP PICKS:
Taking the vintage train from Palma to
Soller (Ferrocarril de Soller)
This little train has been chugging
faithfully along the same route for
more than 100 years. The journey
takes you through almond orchards
as you head out of Palma and along
citrus groves to Soller. Soller itself is a
beautiful small town where we will be
holding up with the families post wedding.
We‘ve got a neat villa with pool
and BBQ – feel free to visit if you‘re
extending your stay!
Serra de Tramuntana drive
Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain
range forming the northern backbone
of the island. Drive from pretty Valldemossa
to the red brick village of Deia.
Carry on, past the spectacular Fornalutx
valley, and tackle the epic hairpins,
twists and turns that lead to Sa
Calobra, where a stunning cove awaits.
Keep going until you reach what feels
like the edge of the world – the Cap de
Formentor and the ocean beyond.
Palma’s Cathedral
Palma’s vast cathedral (‚La Seu‘ in Catalan)
is the city‘s major architectural
landmark. Aside from its sheer scale, its
stunning interior features, designed by
Antoni Gaudí and renowned contemporary
artist Miquel Barceló, make this
unlike any cathedral elsewhere in the
world.
http://www.catedraldemallorca.org
And of course not forgetting the culinary
landscape
Eating out in Mallorca has never been
more exciting, with chefs – inspired as
much by their Mallorquin
grandmothers as Mediterranean
nouvelle cuisine – adding a pinch of
creativity and spice to the city‘s
food scene. Inland restaurants play up
hale-and hearty dishes, such as suckling
pig spit-roast to
perfection, paired with locally grown
wines. On the coast, bistros keep flavours
clean, bright and
simple, serving the catch of the day
with big sea views.
Ombu Tapas Bar & Cocktails (http://
www.ombupalma.com/en/)
Fun, modern tapas. We dined there on
our first visit to Palma and were blown
away.
Forn de Sant Joan (http://www.forndesantjoan.com/en/)
A little bit upscale (Pedro Almodovar
dined here). Reservations recommended.
Mercat de Olivar (http://www.mercatolivar.com/?lang=en)
Gourmet market with food stalls serving
up oysters to sushi.
The Pre-Wedding Sunset Sail
We love boats, sea breezes and sunsets. We also love cava and tapas. And we
think cava and tapas, on the water, with our favourite people is an amazing idea!
The catamaran has a sunbathing deck and will carry snorkelling, kayaking and
paddle surfing equiment. Be sure to bring along your swimming gear, sunscreen
and towels. We’ve got the bubbly covered.
The Wedding
The wedding will take place entirely at Son Marroig, a rambling estate nestled
atop the cliffs of Serra de Tramuntana. The venue offers one of the most breathtaking
views of the Mallorcan coastline. An architectural jewel, the mansion is
the former residence of Archduke Luis Salvator of Austria, who was a visionary
traveller, ecologist and well-known aristocratic hippy. Today, the estate houses a
museum in honour of his contribution to Mallorcan wildlife. We were enchanted
by the venue at first sight, and we hope you’ll find it as magical as we do.
The Post-Wedding Thank You Brunch
To recover from the festivities of the night before, we found a super relaxed
Getting there
Mallorca is an island in the Mediterranean, some 300km off the Spanish mainland.
So unless you‘re an excellent swimmer, we do recommend flying. A wellloved
tourist destination, the international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport
(also known as Son Sant Joan Airport), is not surprisingly one of the busiest in
Spain.
…from Switzerland
Bern: SkyWork flies once daily (Mon,
Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun) to Palma
Basel: easyJet flies twice daily direct to
Palma
Geneva: easyJet flies twice daily direct
to Palma
Zurich: AirBerlin, Germania and Swiss
fly direct to Palma
…from Singapore
There are no direct flights but regional
carriers depart regularly to Mallorca
from all major airports in Europe. For
best transit options, we recommend
flying into Munich, Frankfurt or Zurich.
Singapore Airlines flies multiple times
daily to all three destinations; Lufthansa
and Swiss also offer daily non-stop
flights to Frankfurt and Zurich respectively.
…from Canada
Iberia and British Airways operate
flights from Montreal Trudeau Airport
to Palma, via London Heathrow. Lufthansa
will also allow you a night flight,
followed by a short stop in Frankfurt.
You can of course select Swiss Airlines,
but they will make you wait quite a
while in Zurich... which may not be
worth the little chocolate square they
give you on board.
From Whitehorse or Vancouver, just
opt on the Condor and make your way
to Frankfurt for a short stop until you
take the next flight to Palma.
…and for our mates from various other
spots across the globe
We‘re sorry we don‘t have flight info
for you but www.skyscanner.com sure
does!
Getting about
Mallorca is a small island measuring just 80km east to west and 100km north to
south at its widest points, so there won’t be any lengthy drives. The capital Palma
is sufficiently small and compact to navigate by foot, and is also well served by
taxis and a public transport network. If you plan on exploring the island, a rental
car will give you a lot more flexibility. Some of the more secluded beaches and
mountain villages are only accessible by car.
Airport transfers
The airport is just under 9km from
downtown Palma.
http://www.palma-airport.info/
Busses
EMT‘s Line 1 bus service runs between
the sea port, the city centre and the
airport every fifteen minutes between
6:15am and 2:30am. The fare is €5, and
can be purchased from the bus driver
with cash. The bus stop close to Hotel
TRYP Palma Bosque (our primary wedding
hotel) is “Auditorium”. The trip
there takes 33min.
Taxis
Under normal conditions, a taxi to
Hotel TRYP Palma Bosque should be
around €14 and certainly under €20
(fares in 2016).
Car rentals
There are 5 car rental companies at
Palma Airport. This would be a good
option if you‘re not staying in Palma or
if you plan on extending your stay to
explore the island.
Where to stay
We went with Palma as the hub for our wedding because of its proximity to the
airport and easy accessibility. With its 400’000 strong population, the city alone
makes up half the population of the island. Especially for those who prefer public
transportation to renting a car, Palma is the ideal option.
The wedding venue, Son Marroig is 25km away from Palma or approximately a
40 min drive. On the wedding day, we will have coaches ferrying guests between
Palma and Son Marroig.
OUR ACCOMMODATION PICKS IN PALMA:
Hostal Pinar* ($)
Just 1 min walk away from TRYP Palma
Bosque, this is a good basic option that
pool and sun decks. Single, double and
triple rooms are available. Prices start
from €47 per night.
Hotel TRYP Palma Bosque 3* ($$)
conveniently located between our
pre-wedding and post-wedding
venues (see map). The hotel is modern
and large with 271 rooms and comes
complete with full amenities (free WiFi,
outdoor pool, spa, gym, sun deck).
Rooms cost €130-150 per night (price
fluctuates depending on demand).
you discounted rates:
gen/meetings.melia.com/en/AngelineandAlexandreWedding.html
Hotel Posada Terra Santa 4* ($$$)
A quaint boutique hotel within a restored
16th century manor house with 26
rooms, it is tucked away in a little alley
right in the heart of historic Palma.
We find this hotel offers great valuefor-money.
We stayed here the first
time Angie visited Palma and loved it.
Rooms cost about €250 per night.
Hotel Sant Francesc 5* ($$$$)
This landmark boutique hotel with 42
rooms, located right downtown, has
received numerous accolades; it was
most recently voted the best hotel in
Spain and Portugal by Conde Nast Traveller.
Rooms cost between €400-500
per night.
Hospes Maricel and Spa 5*($$$$)
This seafront hotel is located 4km away
from Palma in an exclusive residential
area close to our post-wedding brunch
venue. Next to majestic architecture
and an infinity pool, the hotel also lays
claim to serving “The best breakfast in
the world”. Rooms start from €450 per
night. This is where we will be staying
prior to the wedding; admittedly a
splurge but hey we’re getting married!
For those of you who prefer to be
closer to the wedding venue and away
from the hustle and bustle of Palma,
Deia is a lovely option. A picturesque
costal village perched on a hillside, it
is considered one of the most beautiful
in Spain.
These are some options in Deia close
to Son Marroig:
Hostal Villaverde ($)
A family run, 10 room hostel with
breathtaking views of the mountains
located 4.3km from Son Marroig (10
min drive). Rooms with breakfast go at
€79 a night.
Hotel des Puig 3* ($$)
A 8 room hotel in traditional Mallorcan
style right in the heart of Deia with an
outdoor swimming pool. From Son
Marroig, it’s 4km or a 9 min drive.
Rooms go for about €170 per night.
Es Moli Hotel 4* ($$$)
A mid-sized hotel with 87 rooms that
offers guests exclusive use of a cove
right by the hotel premises. It’s located
3km from Son Marroig (6 min drive)
and rooms go for about €250 per night
Hotel Sa Pedrissa 4* ($$$$)
This is the closest hotel to Son Marroig
(1.1km, 3 min drive or 15 min walk)
and the only hotel within reasonable
walking distance from Son Marroig
(roads are dark, winding and unpaved
though). Located in a quiet spot off
Deia, it’s the place to go if you want a
complete city escape. The hotel has
just 9 rooms; double rooms start at
€400 per night.
There’s also the AirBnB option. There
are a variety of fincas and apartments
in Palma as well as in Deia
and the surrounding areas. A number
of these properties do however require
a minimum 7 night stay.
Being the summer vacation season, we
expect flight costs to soar closer to the
wedding period (especially with easy-
Jet). Likewise, accommodation options
tend to be booked out early. Where
possible, please make your reservations
as soon as you can.
