Bourntec Digital Integrator
Informatica to ODI
Although more and more companies
have been leveraging data shift cloud
technologies in their bids to become agile,
digital businesses, most are not getting
all they need—or could get—from cloud
data enabler. The trailblazers are making
the operating model and process changes
required to unleash the potential of cloud
data enbler. And the next iteration of
database hybrid cloud integrator—the
“intelligent business cloud Integrator”—
will soon give enterprises everything
required to span multiple clouds to set a
confident course for a truly Informatica
About Oracle BI Apps
As we have come a long way from Siebel
Analytic Applications, the OBI Apps to
Oracle BI Apps 11g. The former became
Oracle BI Apps 7.9.x. As most of readers
will be aware – uses Informatica products
for ETL. Since Oracle launched the 11g
version of OBI Applications which use
Oracle’s very own (ex Sunopsis) Data
Integrator (ODI), rumours about the
demise of the 7.9.x branch could never
be fully squelched. Oracle finally sent the
message of focusing on OBI Apps 11g,
And leaving customers using the 7.9.x
versions with the option of staying within
support, but not receiving any updates
or migrating to 11g and ODI. Oracle has
published a Statement of Direction on
My Oracle Support which is indeed worth
reading when you are involved with
Oracle BI Applications.
Oracle Product Support
Continue’s
“Oracle will continue to support the
7.9.6.x product series according to the
Oracle Lifetime Support policy including
certifications of databases, operating
systems, and enabling 3rd party
technologies. However, Oracle will no
longer develop new content for this series,
nor extend the 7.9.6.x support or any
series based on an ETL architecture with
Informatica.
ODI Transition -
Informatica and Oracle
Informatica has long been recognized
as one of the market leader for Data
Integration. Many companies have invested
in Informatica to run side by side with their
Oracle applications and business intelligence
reporting. Oracle’s comprehensive data
integration platform is rapidly gaining
market share from Informatica and is
considered a market leader from both an
adoption and market growth perspective.
ODI’s E-LT (vs. ETL) approach helps
companies improve performance while
reducing cost; a very attractive offer for
companies that use Informatica and Oracle
together today to manage seamless data
flows between disparate systems or extend
the base offering of the Oracle Business
Intelligence applications. So, what is keeping
your enterprise from taking advantage
of ODI? The sheer number of Informatica
mappings you have that need to be
converted? Or the business reliance on the
additional data mapped into Oracle Business
Intelligence with Informatica?
Challenges and Migration
Opportunities:
Given the importance of data in the modern
enterprise, a flawed data migration can
have severe repercussions. Understanding
of the various challenges in Data migration
is required to mitigate many of the risks
associated.
1. Data Integration is the process of
identifying ways to bring data from
disparate sources and combining them
to have a unified view. Well, that is a
challenging task by itself.
2. From a technical standpoint, the
technical aspect of this implementation is
the first level of challenge. It is never easy
to understand data residing in disparate
sources and then design a common
structure to fit them all at one place.
The tool selection is also very important to
the overall success of any data integration
project. A feasibility study should be
performed to select the right toolset for the
job. Small enterprises or companies who are
just starting their data warehousing initiative
are faced with this challenge and sometimes,
making that decision isn’t easy considering
the number of options available today.
Solutions to Manage Data
Migration Effectively
Choosing the right technology/tool stack
is one of the biggest decisions that awaits
the migration team. The choices range from
a custom built solution, data integration
tools to a hybrid solution. While there
are merits and drawbacks to each choice,
the flexibility and comprehensive data
integration capabilities offered by modern
ELT tools makes them a compelling choice.
Many of these tools offer integrated
development environments that speed
up the development process and provide
plenty of customization capabilities through
scripting/reusability.
The data migration solution offered by
Bourntec provides a robust data integration
toolkit and Java/Perl based scripting
allowing for significant customization. Other
technology challenges include differences
between the underlying source/target
database systems (mismatches in terms
of data types supported, date/time format
mismatches etc), encrypted data, and
handling of character encoding and numeric
precision.
What We Do?
Data integration and Migration.
It’s what we do.
Bourntec provides the market’s leading
data integration platform-Informatica to
ODI. In short, we provide our customers
what they need: a data integration and
migration solution that can integrate
more data, from more systems, in less
time than any other.
Tested on combinations of platforms
and applications, our independent tool
and open data integration platform
interoperates with the broadest possible
range of disparate standards, systems, and
applications. This unbiased and universal
view makes us unique in today’s market. It
also makes us the ideal strategic partner
for enterprises looking to solve data
migration and integration issues of any
size. At Bourntec, we believe the industry
needs a strong, independent player with
an unbiased view of what’s going to solve
customers’ problems. We help them reach
the optimum solution better than anyone.
It’s about choice. It’s about flexibility.
Capabilities of Migrating from
Informatica to ODI
• Oracle Data Integrator is an
integration platform that covers all
data integration requirements: from
high-volume, highperformance batch
loads, to event-driven, tricklefeed
integration processes, to SOA-enabled
data services.
• It’s highly flexible, and can interface
with almost any technology. One of
the best ETL tools.
• Strong and reliable ETL tool with high
performance and helpful features.
• Builds on its flexible and high
performance architecture with
comprehensive big data support and
added parallelism when executing
data integration processes.
• Ability to monitored from a single
solution along with other Oracle
technologies and applications through
the integration
• Debugging feature in ODI- Before
running a full load, you can run a
subset of data from source-target
and check for values generated from
logic at every transformation. While in
debugger mode Target tables do not
load any physical data.
• ODI allows for creating scripts
(“modules”) which are then shared
across multiple data load processes. If
you find a bug, you fix it once, and it
is fixed for everyone. It is the same if
you need to code a new feature.
• ODI has the ability to connect to
virtually any technology out there. If
it does not connect outof-the-box, we
can very easily add a new technology
into it. This flexibility gives a
tremendous developmental advantage
to its users, which can use ODI as
the official ETL tool for any kind of
integration project.
• The EL-T approach that will first load
into the target dataserver before doing
the transfer is a great architecture
improvement compared to standard
ETL tools that use a staging area and
usually process the data in Java.
• The tool has a in-built “Knowledge
Modules” using Oracle ADF, and
this provides by default, all possible
databases and technologies for data
integration, such as file system, Oracle
RDBMS, Teradata, and Microsoft SQL
Server.
• It automates any task such a
executing scripts for servers outside
of your Oracle environment, executing
any task that the IT team wishes to
execute can be done via ODI
Benefits With ODI
• ODI eliminates need for separate ETL
engine- and associated H/W, admin,
overhead
• Streamlines development by providing
capability to separate logical from
physical mappings
• Reduces risk and compliance exposure
via comprehensive data goverance
• Provides a consolidated view of
your entire Oracle Data Integrator
infrastructure enabling users to
monitor and manage all of their
components centrally from Oracle
Enterprise Manager Cloud Control.
• This product integrates seamlessly
with the Oracle Enterprise Manager
Fusion Middleware Control Console
and allows administrators to monitor
from a single screen not only their
data integration components but their
other Fusion Middleware components
as well.
• Export and import the repositories,
manage run-time operations, monitor
the sessions, diagnose the errors,
browse design-time artifacts and
generate lineage reports.
• This simplifies complex data-centric
deployments by improving visibility
and control for with a unified set of
management interfaces.
• Cuts hardware costs through improved
utilization and high-performance data.
Sometimes, for organizations that have built
their data warehouse and a lot of ETL tools
such as Informatica is no more able to scale
or the tool is no more relevant. For example,
organizations that have invested years of
work in OWB are facing that challenge as
Oracle decided to do away with OWB to
promote a much better tool, ODI. In these
cases, even matured organizations need
to do a feasibility analysis to estimate
what it takes to upgrade the existing Data
Integration infrastructure to the new
toolset.
While each data migration project has
its own dynamic, a good understanding
of challenges and best practices can
significantly reduce the chances of running
into common data migration roadblocks.
A recognition of these challenges will also
ensure that data migration process receives
the support it requires.
