bahçeler arasındaki İznik’in çevresi yaklaşık 5 km uzunluğundaki iki bin yıllık
surlarla çevrilidir.
Kent yakınlarındaki Karadin, Çiçekli, Yüğücek ve Çakırca Höyüklerinde M.Ö.
2500 yıllarına inen uygarlık izleri saklıdır. M.Ö. 7. yüzyılda Trak kavimlerinin
göçlerinden önce burada kurulan yerleşim ‘Helikare’ adını almıştır. Kentte
basılan sikkelerde Khryseapolis (Altın Şehir) adı okunmaktadır.
İznik (Nicaea)
İznik (Nicaea) is a city which is an entire “open air museum” and a unique
historical and ancient city in the world. The city’s gridiron planned city
location the historical monuments from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman
periods and historical city texture is under full-scale protection. Iznik, which
is situated 86 km to the north east of Bursa was founded near the east shore
of the lake known by the same name. The boundaries of Iznik which is situated
among the olive vineyards and horticultural gardens is surrounded by 2000
years old walls which are 5 km in length.
In the tumulus of Karadin, Çiçekli, Yüğücek and Çakırca near the city the
footprints of civilization dating back to the period 2500 B.C are hidden. The
settlement which was founded in this area prior to the migration of the Trak
people was called “Helikare”. The name of Khryseapolis (Golden City) can
be read on the coins which were minted in the city.
Makedonya İmparatoru İskender’in generali Antigonos
tarafından M.Ö. 316 yılında yenilenen kent Antigoneia adı
ile anılır. İskender’in ölümünden sonra Antigonos ile general
girerler. Kutalmışoğlu Süleyman Şah, 1075 tarihinde
Nicaea’yı alır ve Selçuklu devletinin başkenti yapar. Şehir
surları yeniden yapılır.Adını da’’ Nicaea’nın izi’’ anlamına
gelen “İznik” olarak değiştirir. Böylece İznik, Anadolu’da ilk
Türk başkenti olur.
I. Haçlı Ordusunun önünde tutunamayan 1.
1299 yılında Yenişehir’i merkez yapan Osman
Gazi İznik’i kuşatınca Bizans İmparatoru kuvvet gönderir.
tarihinde fethedilerek
yeniden Türk idaresine
girer. İznik, önemli bir
sanat, ticaret ve kültür
merkezi olur. Özellikle
Sultan II. Murad’ın ve
Sadrazam Çandarlı
ailesinin ilgisiyle şehir
tepeden tırnağa imar
edilerek birçok cami,
medrese, han, hamam
yapılır. 14. ve 16.
yüzyıllarda İznik, birçok
alim ve şairin yetiştiği bir
The city which was renewed by Macedonia Emperor
Alexander the Great’s general Antiganos in the year 316
B.C. is known by the name of Antigneia. General Lysimakhos
who won the battle between Antiganos and himself after the
death of Alexander the Great, gave the name of his wife
Nicaea who was the daughter of Antipatros to the city.
The city which was bonded to the king of Bithynia in 293 B.C
was adorned in important architectural buildings. Nicaea
which had been the capital city of the Bithynia Kingship
for some time later continued its existence as an important
settlement area of Rome. Starting from the year 285 A.D
when the Roman Empire was divided such as East Rome and
West Rome, Nicaea remained within the border of the East
Rome Empire. Nicaea undertook great architectural activities
during the rule of the Byzantines. The Churches, Waterways
and Cisterns were built in the city during this period. After the
defeat of the Byzantine army by the Seljuk Sultan Alparslan,
the Turks entered the Byzantine interiors. Kutalmışoğlu
Süleyman Şah conquered Nicaea on the date of 1075
and made it the capital
of the Seljuk government.
The waterways were
rebuilt. He also changed
its name to “İznik” which
means “Nicaea’s footprint”.
Consequently, İznik became
the first Turkish capital in
Anatolia.
With the departure from
the city of 1. Kılıçarslan
who was defeated by the
I. Crusaders Army (1096)
the 2. Byzantine period
commenced in Nicaea.
During this period important
1. Dünya Savaşı’nda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun yenilmesi
sonucu imzalanan Mondros Mütarekesi’nden sonra İznik,
12 Temmuz 1920’de Yunan kuvvetlerince işgal edilir. 2
ay 18 gün süren birinci işgal yöre halkının da katılımıyla
restorations were carried out on the city walls and the
security of the city was strengthened by building an outer
wall in front of the existing city walls. When Osman Gazi who
made Yenişehir the centre besieged İznik in the year 1299
the Byzantine Emperor dispatched forces. The victory which
Osman Gazi won in Yalova on 27 July 1302 speeded up the
establishment of the Ottoman Sultanate.
İznik, on being conquered by Orhan Bey (1326-1362) on
the date of 1331 came under the rule of the Turks. Under
the rule of Ottomans, İznik became an important centre
for art, trade and culture. In particular with the interest of
Sultan Murad II and the Çandarlı Vizier family the city was
rebuilt from head to toe and many mosques, madrasahs,
public khans and baths were built. In the 14th and 16th
centuries İznik was transformed into a cultural centre where
many intellectuals and poets were nurtured. The most
famous intellectuals of the age started to give lessons in
the madrasahs in İznik, for this reason İznik was known as
“Ulema Yuvası” (A Haven for Intellectuals) (Alimler Diyarı)
(the City of Intellectuals). The first madrasah and alms
house of the Ottoman period were built in İznik.
After the Montrose Agreement which was signed as a result
of the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the First World
War, İznik was occupied by Greek forces on 12
July 1920. The first occupation which
lasted 2 months and 18 days
ended on 30 September 1920
as a result of the resistance which
started with the contribution of
the local people. However, the
city which was re-occupied on
24 November 1920 achieved its
freedom once more on 27/28
November 1920. The victory
which Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha
won on 30 August 1922 brought
about a total liberation.
Today, İznik which has a significant
cultural accumulation not only
in Turkey but also in the world is
a candidate to be one of the
important belief tourism centres.
3rd Holy City of the Christian World: İznik
İznik is one of the most important religious centres for the Christian world. The first consul
in which the main principles of Christianity were set out met in Senatus’ palace in the
year 325 in İznik with the participation of 228 bishops. In this meeting at which the
emperor Constantinus I participated two important ideas were discussed. The idea
of Arius who was an ecclesiastic from Alexandra was that “the Prophet Jesus was only
a human being and he didn’t came into this world as the son of God” which is also
believed by today’s Christian world was accepted after lengthy discussions. The feast
days related to Christianity and the text with 20 articles which is known as the İznik Laws
were accepted after this consul. Because of this in the 19th consul which met in the
Vatican in the year 1962, İznik was declared as the 3rd Holy city after Jerusalem and the
Vatican. Also, in the year 787 the 7th consul met in Hagias Sophia of İznik and under the
leadership of the Empress Irene prohibitions on pictures and statues were lifted.
İznik Ayasofya Kilisesi
7. Konsül’in toplandığı kilise, iki ana caddenin kesiştiği
yerde, kentin tam ortasındadır. İlk olarak M.S. 7. yüzyılda
Romalılar tarafından inşa edilen Gimnasium üzerine Bizans
döneminde bazilika olarak inşa edilmiştir. Tahminen 11.
yüzyıldaki depremden sonra yenilenmiştir. Üç sahanlıdır.
Orhan Gazi tarafından 1331 yılında camiye dönüştürülen
yapı, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman döneminde Mimar Sinan
tarafından yenilenmiştir. 1935 ve 1953 yıllarında
yapılan onarımlar sırasında renkli taşlarla bezenmiş
taban mozaikleri ve din görevlilerinin törenler esnasında
topluca bulundukları, yarım yuvarlak oturma kademeleri
ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Bir mezar odası duvarında Hz. İsa
freski bulunmaktadır.
İznik Hagia Sophia Church
The church where the 7th consul met is right in the middle
of the city where the two main streets converge. It was
constructed as a Basilica for the first time in the Byzantine
period on the Gymnasium which had been built by the
Romans in the 7th century A.D. It is thought to have been
renewed in the XI. century after the earthquake. It has
three platforms. The building which was transformed into a
mosque in the year 1331 by Orhan Gazi was renewed by
Architect Sinan during the reign of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman.
During the restoration work done in the years 1935 and
1953 the floor tiles which were covered with coloured
stones and the semi-circle seat steps where the chaplains
congregated during the ceremonies were uncovered. On
the wall of a mausoleum there is a fresco of Jesus Christ.
İznik Antik Tiyatro
Bu görkemli Roma eseri,
arasında geniş bir alana
inşa edilmiştir M.S. 98-117
yıllarında İmparator Trajanus
tarafından yaptırılan tiyatro,
13. yüzyıldaki Bizans iç
karmaşası sırasında adeta
toplu mezarlığa dönüşmüştür.
Daha sonraki yıllarda içinde
kilise, saray ve Osmanlı
seramik atölyeleri ve çini
fırınların bulunduğu yapılan
arkeolojik kazılarda ortaya
çıkarılmıştır.
which was built by Emperor
Trajanus between the years 98-
117 A.D. was transformed into
almost a mass graveyard during
the Byzantine civil war in the 13th
century. In the archaeological
excavations of the following years
it was discovered that there
was a church, palace and
ottoman ceramic workshops
and tile ovens in it.

İznik Surları
Bithynia döneminde (M.Ö. 4. yy) inşa edilmeye başlanan
surlar, Roma ve Bizans dönemlerindeki yeni eklentilerle
günümüzdeki şeklini almıştır. İznik’in çevresini beş kenarlı
çokgen şekilde kuşatan surlar yaklaşık 5 km. uzunluğundadır.
İznik’in iki ana caddesinin kesiştiği noktadan bakıldığında,
dört ana kapı görünür. Oniki tane de ikinci derece kapı
vardır. Kentin dört ana kapısından günümüze Lefke Kapı
ile İstanbul Kapı sağlam ulaşabilmiştir. Her iki kapıda da
Helenistik, Roma ve Bizans dönemi izleri vardır. Yenişehir
Kapı kısmen, Göl Kapı tamamen yıkıktır. İstanbul Kapı’da
tiyatrodan getirilen masklar bulunmaktadır, İstanbul ve Lefke
kapısında mermer kabartma friz parçalarının da kullanıldığı
görülmektedir. Yüksekliği 10-13 metre arasında değişen
surlarda, yuvarlak ve kare şeklinde 114 burç vardır.
İznik City Walls
The city walls, the construction of which began in the
Byzantine period (IV-I century B.C) took today’s present
shape with the new extensions during the Roman and
Byzantine periods. The city walls which surround the city
in a 5 sided polygon shape are almost 5 kilometres in
length. When it is looked at from the point where İznik’s two
main roads meet, the four main gates can be seen. Also
there are twelve smaller gates. Of the four main gates,
only the Lefke Gate and the Istanbul Gate are still in a
good condition to the present day. There are marks from
the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods on these
two gates. The Yenişehir Gate is partly and the Göl Gate
completely in ruins. There are masks on the Istanbul Gate
which were brought from the theatre and also marble
embossed frieze pieces that were used on the Istanbul
and Lefke Gates can be seen. On the city walls the height
of which varies between 10-13 metres there are 114
round and square shaped bastions.
The Green Mosque
The Green Mosque which is the symbol of İznik takes its name from its minaret covered in
green tiles and bricks. The construction of the mosque was started by Çandarlı Hayrettin
Pasha in the year 1378, but on his death it was completed by his son Ali Pasha in 1391.
It is one of the most magnificent mosques among the early Ottoman period one-domed
mosques. Its unique minaret is on the right side of the mosque. Its main body is covered
in blue and green coloured tiles by using a zigzag mosaic technique. It is an important
example of the reflection of the Seljuk minaret tradition to the early period Ottoman art.
This was built by the Ottoman Sultan I. Murat in the year
1388 in memory of his mother Nilüfer Hatun as a charitable
institution to distribute food to the poor. The building
which was used for various needs during the republican
period was opened to service as a museum in the year
1960. In the alms house which is entered from a door with
inscriptions on it to the main area which is covered by a
dome, the workmanship the rich and colourful stone and
bricks unique to the Byzantine period is noticeable. The
alms house which is still used as a museum is one of the
beautiful examples of XIV century Ottoman architecture.
In the museum the archaeological findings collected from
İznik and its surroundings and the monuments excavated
from Ilıpınar Neolithic settlements and the Roman theatre
and tile ovens from İznik are all exhibited. In the garden
of the museum the monuments of the Greeks, Romans,
Byzantines and Ottomans can be found.
Among these are Berber Kaya, Hypoge Underground
Graves, Dörttepeler Tumulus, Ayatrifon Church, Rüstem
Pasha Khan, İsmail Bey Bath and Hacı Özbek Mosque.
idealdir. İznik Gölü, balıkçılık yapan yüzlerce ailenin de geçim kaynağıdır.
İznik Lake: A Source of Life
The ancient name of İznik Lake is Askania. It appears in
laudatory writing in Roman records and there is also a
recipe for askania sheath fish cooked in earthenware
cooking pots with black mulberry juice sauce. İznik
Lake which is the largest of the Marmara region and
the fifth largest natural lake of Turkey was declared an
Area for Protection in the year 1991. The lake and its
surroundings are suited to the criterion of a special
environment protection area with the small cormorants
and herons which establish mixed colonies. In the
freshwater lake carp, sheath fish and crayfish can be
found. The İznik Lake which has also an importance from
the point of view of Tourism is ideal for water sports such
as swimming, canoeing and surfing. The Lake is also a
source of income for the hundreds of families who make
their living from fishing.
Dünyaya nam salan İznik Çinisi
14. yüzyılın ortasından 17. yüzyılın sonuna dek İznik’te
üretilmiş olan çinilere “İznik Çinisi” denmektedir. 15.
yüzyıldan itibaren kendine has çinilerin üretildiği İznik’te,
çinicilik 16. ve 17. yüzyılda altın dönemini yaşar. 17.
yüzyılda İznik’i ziyaret eden ünlü gezgin Evliya Çelebi,
World Famous İznik Tiles
The tiles which were produced in İznik from the middle of the
14th century until the end of the 17th century are known as
“İznik Tiles”. The tile making in İznik where the tiles unique to that
place were produced since the 15th century experienced its
golden period in the 16th and 17th centuries. In his travel book
the famous traveller Evliya Çelebi who visited İznik in the 17th
century tells us that there were more than 300 tile ovens in the
district. In İznik tiles the floral motifs such as tulips, hyacinths,
pomegranates, and carnations are used; the tile making
which had disappeared since the 18th century took
on a new phase of life in the 1990’s and production
started in the ovens which had been established.
In İznik tiles the colours blue, turquoise, green and
red are the most used ones of notice.
Between the XV-XVII centuries İznik tiles
were used as an important decorative
element and showed a great development
in Ottoman architecture. The tiles found
an extensive are of usage in various
buildings such as mosques, small
mosques known as masjids, madrasahs,
alms houses, baths, palaces, manor
houses, kiosks and libraries. In Turkish
architecture and decorative arts the
tile occupies an important place.
In the year 1993 the İznik Education
and Teaching Foundation was
established in order to hand own the
İznik tile art and existing information
to the future generations. The
foundation which carries out mutual
studies alongside TUBİTAK with some
universities related to the methods
