Aggressive New Leadership
Transforms Landscape at UNH
he University of New Haven,
under the leadership of Presi-
dent Steve Kaplan, is under-
going a facelift few could have imagined
only five years ago. In just one year,
donors have contributed close to one
million dollars to replace older classrooms
with over 50 state-of-the-art
"smart classrooms" that are fully wired
with the latest computer technology. A
new dormitory has been completed, and
extensive renovations of older buildings
are ongoing. Work has also begun on a
new $12.5 million "flagship" recreation
and fitness center.
A plaza, adorned with stands of birch
trees and outdoor tables, now extends
from the back of Bartels Hall where stu-
dents once dodged traffic; in a parking
lot on their way to classes. Shrubs,
flowers, and grass are rapidly replacing
An architectural rendering of the new recreation center.
the asphalt that once covered the campus
when UNH was largely a commuter
school. "I often talk about rransforma-
tionalleadership in my sport management
classes," says Dr. Allen Sack, Director of
the Management of Sports Industries
Program, "but I can now point to reallife
examples of such leadership right
here in out own administration."
In the past year alone, UNH has
received over ten million dollars in
donations from alumni and friends -
the biggest gifts in UNH history -
and banks have stepped up with millions
more. "This flow of resoutces into the
university," says Sack, "is a true sign that
the new leadership has been able to
inspire confidence in the vision we have
for the future. It is exciting, as well as
challenging, to be at an institution
undergoing such a rapid change."
ave Parcells is one of only four Americans ever to swim the treacherous
English Channel from England to France and back again, a distance of 44
miles. Far more people have climbed Mount Everest. Parcells, a CFO for
Garrity Industries (third largest producer of flashlights in America), discussed his
adventures as a runner, swimmer, and triathlete as part of the university's Fall Week
for family, alumni, and the UNH community.
The talk, sponsored by the Sports Industries Club and the Alumni Affairs Office,
focused on how Parcells combines his passion for amateur sports with fundraising for
children battling cancer. In his first crossing of the Channel, in 2000, he raised more
than $40,000 in pledges and topped that in 2002 with his double crossing, raising
$100,000. Parcells is not only a world-class athlete but an expert at sports event
manag~ment and fundraising for charity.
"I hope the students came away with an understanding that success is just
not determined financially. It is important to be able to strike a healthy balance
amongst your career, your family, your personal passions and the community..."
DAVE PARCELLS
In addition to dozens of marathon swims, Parcells has participated in 75 triathlons
and 50 road races. His accomplishments include the 1989 Ironman Triathlon World
Championship, Kona, Hawaii; the London and Marine Corps Marathons; and the Tampa
Bay 24 Mile Marathon Swim. As owner and CEO of a sport event management firm, Parcells
has organized races across Long Island Sound, as well as a variety of other events for
charity. Parcells' talk was part of the Business School's Professional Enrichment Program.
