So, this is what it feels like to lose a legend.
I have to admit, when James Brown passed away
in 2006, I realized the world lost an original, but
I did not feel a deep connection to the Godfather
of Soul. My earliest recollection of him was
actually Eddie Murphy’s stand-up comedy routine
of the “Godfather” trying to get in the hot tub! I
grew up with a greater awareness of his fall from
stardom, than of his offerings to the music I now
adore. As with James Brown, mainstream media is
capitalizing on Jackson’s missteps, although they
still haven’t succeeded in robbing this generation
of young listeners of an appreciation for Michael’s
contributions to the entertainment industry and his
global humanitarian efforts.
When “Thriller” hit the scene in 1982, hiphop
music and the culture it spawned didn’t exist.
At best, rap music was still being battle-tested in
the streets of New York. Grunge music, born in
Seattle, didn’t arrive until the mid 80’s. Popular
music, on the other hand, spanned the nation. As
the burgeoning King of Pop, Michael Jackson owned
the airwaves! In the beginning, he seemed to be
part James Brown…part Frank Sinatra…part Sammy
Davis…and part Smokey Robinson. By 1980 however,
Michael Jackson won his first Grammy for Best Male
R&B Performance and sold 20 million copies of first
4 | BeautifulBlackMag.com | 504.583.1 61
solo album “Off the Wall” worldwide. He had come
into his own, reaching an iconic status not seen since
Elvis. His album “Thriller” set industry records that
remain unbroken to this day selling 28 million copies
worldwide. By 1982, Michael Jackson had become
the single, biggest and brightest star on the globe.
Crowned the undisputed King of Pop, Michael
took hold of that music genre and made it his own.
What the heck is Pop music anyway? In some ways,
it seems to be the evolution of disco. It’s a brand of
music you can move to, whether you’ve really got
rhythm or not. The trick is that you have to know
the words to really call yourself a fan because the
lyrics are as important as the baseline. It’s nearly
impossible to dance to “Billie Jean” without singing
along “…but the kid’s not my son!” Try grooving to
“Beat It” and watch how fast you spit out the chorus.
My favorite, “I want to love you…P-Y-T…pretty young
thang; you need some loving…T-L-C…tender loving
care…and I’ll take you there.”
Honestly, Michael was more than just music.
He was an entertainer, a songwriter, a fashion
icon, an actor, an innovator and philanthropist.
In 2000, Michael was cited in the Guinness Book
of World Records for “most charities supported by
a Pop Star (39).” At the height of his stardom,
you couldn’t just listen to Michael, you had to see
him. His performances were one of a kind, and his
music videos were more akin to short films. The
groundbreaking video to “Thriller” was nominated
for an Academy Award. He possessed a sense of
fashion and style that was previously unseen. The
“Beat It” and “Thriller” jackets became so popular
that even the knock-offs were hard to come by. The
beaded glove, saggy socks, high-water pants and
penny loafers all became must-have accessories.
To some degree, it was probably unhealthy for so
many of us to attempt to emulate this one man.
Women weren’t immune to the Michael Jackson
phenomenon. Every girl wanted to be considered
a PYT and the Jheri curl was without a doubt the
single, most popular hair style in America.
Although not on par with “Thriller” Michael’s
platinum sales status continued with his successive
albums “BAD” and “Dangerous.” The Nielsen
numbers from his halftime show of the 1993 Super
Bowl charted over 90 million viewers worldwide.
His 1993 interview with Oprah scored another 62.2
million viewers. Contrast that to the 37.8 million
viewers that MSNBC reported tuned-in to view the
By Leviticous Cleveland
inauguration of President Obama.
The later years proved awfully unkind to
Michael, and in many ways, the damage to the
legacy he leaves behind is of his own decisionmaking,
coupled with whatever group of handlers
who surrounded him. If it is indeed lonely at the
top, then it is hard to fathom what it must have been
like to have lived in such a glass house for nearly 40
years. Legal battles both in civil and criminal courts
left him financially constricted.
There are some young music lovers who never
experienced the real magic of Michael Jackson. They
watch and listen to the media’s coverage concerning
his death and wonder “What’s all the fuss?” They
missed out on the moonwalk, the Pepsi commercial,
Friday Night videos and the Jackson 5 cartoon and
they never even saw Mike do the “robot,” but the
media including YouTube ironically, has prompted
kids to start singing “ABC” and “I’ll Be There,” like
new releases! Jackson’s record sales have once
again soared!
In the days since his passing, my 9 year-old-son
has asked me, whether or not Michael was Black and
why are all the radio stations, TV channels, coffee
shops, and bookstores playing his music? By the
time I finished explaining the Michael Jackson that I
knew, he was hooked on “Human Nature” “…Why?
Why?….tell ‘em that it’s human nature…”
Today’s new music lovers might not readily
recognize his songs or fully appreciate his style,
but Michael Jackson’s influence on the styles and
careers of past and present artists is undeniable.
Solo artists and bands like: New Edition, Boys II Men,
Mariah Carey, Usher, Celine Dion, Beyonce, Erika
Badu, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown
and of course Janet Jackson, have roots traceable
to the creative genius of Michael Jackson. Their
unique styles and choreography, commanding stage
presence, and larger-than-life concert performances
all bespeak remnants of the King of Popular music.
Michael’s musical influence wasn’t limited to Pop
and R&B artists. His impact can be seen in the hip
hop realm in the likes of Andre 3000, P. Diddy, and
Missy Elliot to name a few. Gospel music may be a
slight stretch, but I’d wager that Kirk Franklin is a
huge fan as well.
It is my hope that in the final analysis,
Michael Jackson is remembered as a Superstar who
convinced us all to make a change starting with the
“Man in the Mirror.”

Dr. Sancerie O’Rourke-Allen was raised in Baton Rouge, LA and
envisioned being a dentist since the seventh grade. In 1994, she graduated
from Xavier University of Louisiana with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
She promptly entered Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX where she
earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1998. She also completed an
Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at the University
of Mississippi School of Dentistry.
With the community in mind, Dr. O’Rourke-Allen opened her dental
practice, Distinctive Smiles of Baton Rouge, in 2007. “We strive to create a
positive dental experience in a soothing environment. Educating ourselves
and our patients is a primary focus of the organization. We are family
oriented…general and cosmetic dentistry for the entire family. Whether you
need veneers, bleaching, root canals, extractions, fillings, or just preventive
care, we are here to serve you and yours.”
Dr. O’Rourke-Allen believes in utilizing the latest technology to provide
superior, quality dental services to her patients. This is evident when you first
walk in the door of Distinctive Smiles of Baton Rouge. There is a large flat
screen showing patient education. This plays on all monitors in the office.
They have digital x-rays which provide up to 90% less radiation than film
x-rays. Intraoral cameras are also used to capture images in the mouth so
that patients can see the same thing that the dentist is seeing. “Sometimes,
seeing is believing. It is one thing for me to just tell the patient something,
but it is another for them to actually see it and develop an understanding of
their situation. The patient tends to be more agreeable as we work together
to improve their condition.”
Dr. O’Rourke-Allen maintains membership in several
professional and civic organizations including the American
Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and Junior League
of Baton Rouge. For the past seven years, she has
enjoyed providing dental services for the mentally
challenged at Acadiana Region Supports and
Services Center. In 2005, she was one of 12
dentists selected nationwide to participate in
the American Dental Association Institute for
Diversity in Leadership.
While Dr. O’Rourke-Allen thoroughly
enjoys being a dentist, she has two other
jobs that take precedent. She is a wife and
mother of one son. “Sometimes, it can all be
a balancing act. However, I would not trade it for anything.”
Distinctive Smiles of Baton Rouge is conveniently located at 8894 Airline
All the way from Philadelphia, Pa. to Baton Rouge, Tracey Ransome, a quiet kept secret, is now in
your face and doing it big!
Tracey Ransome is the Owner and Master Stylist of Shear Magic Hair Studio, specializing in Hair Care,
Extensions, Cutting and Styling. With 23 years of experience, Tracey is a highly sought after Master Stylist
because of her skills, professionalism and her unique ability to render positive results. She is known for
her natural looking extensions for all hair textures, trendy styles and her genuine love for her profession.
Tracey is the Master Stylist to Miss New Orleans USA, Jamie Roddy. (BB Magazine July/Aug 2009).
In Shear Magic, we now have a premier hair studio offering elegance, relaxation and excellence in
hair care right in the heart of Baton Rouge.
Don’t get it twisted, Tracey Ransome has been performing her Shear Magic on clients for years at local
Baton Rouge salons such as Choices For Hair. This sister is now doing it for herself!
At Shear Magic, clients can expect warm and welcoming service from professional stylists totaling
almost 60 years of experience and knowledge. Expect the newest, hottest and current styles and products.
Shear Magic provides the best in hair care, cutting, and coloring from a staff that stays educated in the
trade.
When Tracey came to Baton Rouge, she simply wanted to “do hair” and retire quietly in a few years.
She decided to step out on her own because she saw a need for the consumer; especially in the area of
extensions and hair replacement. “Customers were and still are being exploited and taken advantage of,
because some salons don’t stand behind their work. They are only in it for the money! I wanted to give
our customers something more! We care and stand behind our work, we educate our clients and we
are not trying to hustle them. An educated client is the key to healthy hair and good advertisement.
I also wanted a salon that gives back to the community, not just takes from it. We can help young
people become professionals in the hair industry. We currently donate our skills and time to a
few non-profit organizations,” says Tracey.
“Shear Magic will be set apart from others because of our dedication to our customers.
We are willing to accommodate our customers’ unique work schedules. All of our team
members work together. We step in and assist each other. We often share clients,
because we would rather you stay at Shear Magic, so we’ll do whatever is needed
to help one another.”
Although Shear Magic has been open only 3 months, you will
be hearing about Tracey and her team because they’ll be bringing it
on strong! Keep your eyes and ears open; no gimmicks involved just
“Shear Magic” and Shear ability!
The atmosphere at Shear Magic is Tracey Ransome’s way of
saying thank you to customers for their patronage. “They could be
anywhere, but they chose us! The serene atmosphere is also for our
stylists. Because we spend so much time here, I want them to feel at
home and a happy. A happy stylist equals a happy client.” Whether you are
a customer or a stylist, come in and experience “Shear Magic.”
Testimonies:
“This salon is so roomy and pretty, it’s like sitting in your living room.” A.D.
“Everyone is so nice here and the way you all vibe is cool.” J.S.
“Tracey, I didn’t know what to expect, but this exceeds what I had in mind.
It’s beautiful!” W.D.
Many of us have been challenged to walk
through situations that honestly should have killed
us, bankrupted us, destroyed our homes, and tore
down our spirit, but we’re still here! As you read this
article, it’s important that you understand that when
I say, “Keep on Walking,” I’m talking about walking
with the faith of God in the midst of problems and
turmoil. Keep walking while you believing, receiving
or waiting on your blessing to manifest. No matter
how difficult, keep walking! The sign of a mature
believer is that his or her walk with God doesn’t
change, nor is it determined by what he or she
possesses, but instead it’s predicated on who they
possess. This is why Nehemiah said, “The joy of the
Lord is my strength.” In the midst of his enemies,
being ridiculed, and being scorned, Nehemiah
understood that he had a joy that the world didn’t
give and that the world couldn’t take away. Are
there any Nehemiahs reading this article who will
declare that your joy is in the Lord? Nehemiahs are
not going to allow anything to steal their joy, rob
their peace, nor deter them from giving God the
highest praise!
If I’m talking to somebody who is on the verge
of giving up or somebody who feels like you’re at the
end of your rope…Please realize that your destiny
is too important; your purpose is too significant,
and your calling is too compelling to give up now!
No, you must be determined in your heart to keep
putting one foot in front of the other. You might not
be where you want to be, but keep on pressing your
way. Things might not be the way you want them to
be, but keep on confessing the word. You know that
quitters never win! The race is given to the one that
endures unto the end, not the swift, nor the strong.
Is there anybody out there who has made up their
mind? You refuse to turn back, and you’re going
to keeping looking unto Jesus the Author and the
10 | BeautifulBlackMag.com | 504.583.1 61
Finisher of your faith.
I’m writing to remind someone that the God
we serve is still able; still supplying needs; still
delivering and still healing sickness and disease. It
doesn’t matter what you’re dealing with, God can
bring you through it! Keep on Walking!
As believers, we are faced with challenges day
in and day out that are designed to deter us from
believing that God still cares about us; challenges
designed to stop us from thinking life can get better;
to trap us into thinking that the Lord has left us with
no direction; but I believe I’m talking to some people
that are convinced to go all the way with Jesus. As a
child of the covenant, you have a promise that says,
“They that know their God shall do great exploits.”
I know the thoughts that I think towards you, to
provide you with a hope and a future.”
Since you have your promise- Keep on walking
by faith! You may not see the tithe opening up the
window, close your eyes and Keep on walking! When
it seems like your prayers have gone unanswered-
Keep walking! When you don’t see things changing
in your life- Keep walking! When you don’t know how
the bills are going to get paid - Keep on walking!
The steps of a good man are ordered by
God! As believers, every step we take is a step in
the right direction; is a step towards our future,
is a step towards destiny, and a step towards our
wealthy place! Somebody ought to shout, “Thank
you Jesus!”
You’ve got to have a faith that won’t quit -
because sometimes your prayer doesn’t get answered
immediately, but instead it’s answered over a period
of time. It’s after you leave His presence that you
see change. The 10 lepers that were healed by Jesus
didn’t receive the manifestation of the healing in
His presence, but as they went, they were healed.
What are you saying Brother Will? You’ve got to
start walking like you know God’s going to heal you.
Walk like you know God’s going to deliver you, save
you and going to change your life! You have to have
a mindset that says I’m going to knock and keep
on knocking; seek and keep on seeking; ask and
keep on asking. God you said, “Ask and you shall
receive!” If I keep on asking, then my faith becomes
the substance of things hoped for; the evidence
of things not seen. You have to keep walking like
you’ve got it; talking like you’ve got it; living like
you’ve got it; because in a moment, in a twinkling of
an eye, God can answer your prayers! The believer’s
faith is not in, what is seen, but what is heard by the
word of God.
Now, I do understand that believers can walk
with the Lord and then find themselves stuck. 55
years old and stuck; 30 and stuck; 20 and stuck!
Stuck and don’t know why they’re stuck. Stuck and
don’t really know how or where they got stuck! It’s
like you’re in quicksand and you feel yourself sinking
into sin, into temptation, into complacency, sinking…
and your problem seems too high to get over and too
low to get under! It’s okay, I hear Jude saying, “Now
unto Him who is able to keep you from falling and
to present you faultless before His presence.” I hear
Psalm 40:2 saying, “He’ll raise you out of the miry
clay and set your feet on a solid rock.” The Lord is
with us! Fear not and Keep on Walking!

I had a very enjoyable childhood; reared in Baton Rouge by the late
John Huggins Jr. and Constance H. Lockman. My parents were educators and
instilled in me the importance of achieving a quality education. After high
school, I wanted to pursue a teaching career, but others suggested I choose
a more lucrative field of study. Consequently, I graduated from Southern
University in Computer Science and worked in corporate America for over ten
years. I learned many aspects of business during that time, yet my heart’s
desire was still to teach.
I smile in awe of how God ordered my steps in preparation for such
a time as this. I studied Early Childhood Development and received an
Associate degree in Theology while in California. I later completed alternative
certification in the Teach Baton Rouge Program. I was honored as Teacher of
the Year under the leadership of Josephine Batiste. Currently I’m enrolled in
the Education Leadership Masters program at Southeastern University.
I have served on the staff at Living Faith Christian Center (LFCC) for
over 15 years. Bishop Raymond W. Johnson has exemplified great kingdom
leadership qualities that I am able to apply in business and in my personal life.
I’ve been overjoyed since Bishop Johnson afforded me the opportunity to
manage the ministry’s daycare center!
Kingdom Daycare is presently operating at LFCC in the cathedral
from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We will move
into our state of the art, Class A location on the grounds of the church
this upcoming Fall. Currently, as a licensed Class B Center we provide
services to children ages 6 weeks to 3 years of age. A Beka is our
curriculum of choice, supported by other programs to foster a welldeveloped
learning experience. The school’s heart is to show the love
of a mother and the protection of a father to our children.
We purpose to provide quality care in a safe, loving,
academically and socially stimulating environment. The
students will receive the necessary skills to develop a healthy
self-image and a positive attitude toward school. The ageappropriate
educational programs selected will have the
children well prepared for their next level of learning.
The word of God says “Even a child is known by his
doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it
grandparents had a special day.
It became a national holiday in 1978, due to the
tireless efforts of Marian McQuade, a West Virginia
housewife with 15 children, 40 grandchildren and
8 great grandchildren. She had been campaigning
for a day to honor grandparents since 1970. After
many obstacles and the intervention of the media;
the first Sunday after Labor Day was officially
declared Grandparent’s Day! The U.S. Congress
passed legislation and it was ultimately signed by
President Jimmy Carter. The month of September was
appropriately chosen to signify the “autumn years of
life.”
My paternal grandmother, “Big Mama,” was
a strong, quiet woman of few words and a stern
demeanor. She was short in stature with an ample
bosom, and could cook! Wow, I still recall the “Soul
food” spreads that she and her sister prepared when
we visited. She always wore a half-smile that failed
to conceal her joy in having her son and his children
spend time with her. I recall my daddy having that
same half-smile.
What I remember most is the best banana
pudding one can imagine! Her table was spread with
scrumptious food like fried chicken, collard greens
and her cornbread which tasted more like dessert.
Although she was not very talkative, her love for us
was obvious. She ultimately had a stroke and died
after some time in a nursing home. I have little
memory of my paternal grandfather as Big Mama
had reared my dad as a single parent.
I have more vivid memories of my maternal
grandparents because as kids my brothers and I spent
many summers with them on their farm in Mississippi.
These summers were so greatly anticipated! We could
barely wait for school to end, so we could go to “Aunt
Annie’s” house. A name we called our grandmother
because we mimicked our cousins who also spent time
with her. Memories of “Aunt Annie” are deeply etched
in my mind. I remember her leaving the choir stand,
flinging her hat in my lap and dancing the holy dance.
I remember her teaching in church as Evangelist Annie
Sloan and her confidently expounding on the word of
God. I remember her saving flour sacks, and taking
me to “town” to have wonderful outfits made for
me to play. Flour sacks came in bright cotton prints
in those days. Sadly, I recall her and the neighbors
talking softly about the lynching of a Black man in a
nearby county. Finally, I remember her funeral and
my mother sobbing “Madear, Madear” as her casket
was carried from the church. Her favorite song was
“Believe I’ll Run On ‘See What The End’s Gon’ Be.”
I chose not to research the statistics on the ever
changing roles of grandparents. I just didn’t want to
know. I surmise : that the number of grandparents
assuming the role of caring for their children’s children
has increased greatly; that the number of African
American grandparents being forced to assume the
sole responsibility of rearing these children is higher
than any other nationality; that too many times the
reasons for their assuming this role are drug addiction,
alcoholism, child abuse/ neglect, incarceration,
and even violent death; that the number of single
grandparents with this responsibility is at an all-time
high; that maternal and paternal grandparents are
younger than ever. I don’t know these as true facts
and I’d rather not know. I choose to believe that we
as Christian “Grands and GreatGrands” know above
all, the power of prayer and a genuine relationship
with God. I believe we pray without ceasing for our
children, their future and the future of this nation. We
know that prayer changes things. We know that it is
only through prayer that change can come to our city,
state, nation, and yes, the world.
Our kids should have wonderful memories of us:
Nana, Grandma, Grandpa, Madear, Me-Maw, Maw-
Maw, Mother, Ma-mee, Paw-Paw, Pop, Pops, Poppa,
Mo Mo, GG, Big Mama, Big Daddy and the list goes
on and on. They should have glorious memories of us
when we’ve moved on to be with our Lord…Precious
memories that they can share on holidays and family
get-togethers.
We have to be good examples for our
grandchildren and recognize the significance of a
good, open relationship with them. They should
feel comfortable talking with us. My granddaughter
related an incident to me that she had not even
told her mother. “Nana,” she said, “You know what
happened? When I was bowling, I knocked down nine
pins in the other lane!” Then she went into one of her
well known “giggling sprints!”
That relationship should also be one of respect.
My grandson knows not to interrupt when “grown
folks” are talking. He will hold up one finger for hours,
if necessary, to have his say. My granddaughters
unceasingly relate incidents that happen at school or
their little “tidbits” of info about animals that they
saw on Animal Planet. Children should be confident
enough to interject what they feel in a respectable
way like, “No, it’s the other way, Daddy.” There
should be no hesitancy in their communicating with
their parents or grandparents.
Mrs. McQuade’s mission for Grandparent’s
Day was “a day of giving of self, sharing hopes,
dreams, values and setting an example for future
generations.” My hope is that Grandparent’s Day will
serve as a reminder of our commitment, to teach our
kids about our history as African Americans and the
history of their immediate family. All parents, young
and not so young, must remind our children of their
inner strengths inherited from our ancestors and our
God. We must give them wisdom and knowledge to
do their utmost task: be the best person they can be,
for themselves, their children and their children’s
children. Children must see and hear us honor and
respect everyday people in general and especially, the
elderly, so they will know how to do the same. Lastly,
children of all ages must know that God should be first
and foremost in their lives and in the lives of them
that will follow them.
Happy Grandparent’s Day!!
Jerri Battles is the loving wife of Elder Charles L. Battles, Jr. and the blessed
mother of one son, Charles Battles, III. Mrs. Battles is a native of Texarkana, Tx
who relocated to Baton Rouge from Houston in 1993. Growing up she was always
interested in serving and helping people. “If it was helping an older person
move furniture or run errands to the store; I would do whatever I could to help
others,” says Jerri.
During her first two years of college, she majored in Fashion Merchandising.
She worked in retail for fifteen years before working for the United States Postal
Service. “I always wanted to make sure each customer felt appreciated and was
happy,” says Jerri.
Her best friend since childhood of twenty eight years, Co-Pastor Trica
Cooksey-Butcher of Dallas, TX., introduced Jerri Battles to “BODY MAGIC.”
The reshaping results obtained with “BODY MAGIC” can be likened to those
of “Lipo,” but without the cost and pain of surgery. Imagine reducing 2-3 sizes
in 10 min. No tummy tuck, no surgery, no dieting, no gimmicks, and no tricks.
The Ardyss BODY MAGIC does what is called “Lipo Transportation” which means
it takes a woman’s fatty tissues from where they are to where they need to be in
the body. We offer ABDOMEN T-SHIRTS for men who may be suffering with back
pain and need to take pressure off of their backs or those who might just want
to reduce 2 belt sizes.
The garments promote correct posture of the spinal column and were
originally created to help overweight women recover their figure; shaping
their bodies while in the weight loss process. BODY MAGIC is designed to exert
pressure on the abdomen generating protection that prevents fat accumulation
in the abdominal walls. Although this is our best seller, we have many different
garments for many different needs.
Ardyss is an old company with a new opportunity! Our featured products are
Ardyss “BODY MAGIC”- BODY SHAPERS, Ardyss Health and Nutrition, and Ardyss
leadership and customer service.
“Customer service is what makes my company different.
I establish relationships with my customers. I don’t want
them to feel as if I’m just selling them a garment. Their
needs might change next month or next year and I want
customers to feel confident in me. I am available for
private fittings as well as Reshaping Parties, Bridal Parties,
Reunions, Fashion Shows and more… “
Lisa A. Crinel Enterprises is making LACE - The
Reception Place, a family affair. CEO/Owner/Zulu
Queen 2004, Lisa Crinel, has teamed up with her only
daughter Wilneisha Harrison and a viable staff in
making LACE the premier place for your next special
occasion. BB Magazine had a chance to talk with Lisa and
Wilneisha to get a glimpse of what’s happening at LACE.
BB Mag: Lisa, we know that you run a
successful Home Health Care business, but how did you
eventually open a reception hall?
Lisa Crinel: LACE-The Reception Place, was
initially Cozy Care Adult Day Care in 2008. Due to
Medicaid budget cuts, the program was affected. We
were stuck with a gigantic building and no vision for
it! In September 2008, my Zulu King of 2004, Gerard
M. Johnson and I hosted a party for the incoming king
and queen of Zulu that year at the adult day care. We
invited St. John the Baptist Sheriff Wayne Jones and
Councilman Ronnie Smith.
I was encouraged by several members of our
community to convert the building into a reception hall.
After discussing it with Wilneisha, and much prayer, we
did our homework on reception halls.
I met with Annette Amadee of The Wisdom who
shared valuable information with me. I’ve hosted so
many parties at popular plantations that I knew that
I wanted to model it after an elegant southern decor.
With the help of DJ Captain Charles and contractor,
Leonard Mercadel/Touch of Class Inc.; we came up with
various ideas, color schemes, sound systems, lights and
many other details now seen at LACE.
BB Mag: Lisa and Wilneisha, does LACE bring
excitement to your lives?
Lisa: The excitement that LACE brings to my
life is knowing that for 3 hours, we can allow someone
to forget about any problems or dilemmas they might
have experienced before opening our doors. When you
enter LACE, we make sure you have one of the best and
most memorable times of your life!
Wilneisha: LACE brings excitement to me
16 | BeautifulBlackMag.com | 504.583.1 61
because we have been blessed to provide a place for
people to relax, be entertained, fed and go somewhere
out of the norm. It is so exciting to see the enjoyment
on the peoples’ faces when they are at LACE, and to
know that we helped to put it there is very fulfilling.
Lisa: Neisha’s right! To have a client or a bride
come up to me or any staff member, showing their
appreciation or sharing how much fun they had brings
excitement. When you can see the excitement in their
eyes, it makes all our hard work worthwhile.
BB Mag: Who would you consider to be your
clients?
Lisa: Our clients consist of young brides-to-be
to brides and grooms celebrating 50 years; siblings
who want to give their parents an anniversary party;
churches who need a larger facility for a conference;
classmates for a class reunion, business people for
meetings, conferences, birthday parties, and the list
goes on!
BB Mag: Wilneisha after doing the homework
has LACE met your expectations?
Wilneisha: LACE has exceeded my
expectations because we had no idea that it was going
to turn out as nice as it did. I can remember how the
daycare looked in the beginning. One of my favorite
places is the Chapel! With God’s vision we turned LACE
into something beyond our expectations!
BB Mag: What are people saying about the
food at LACE and why?
Lisa: We receive so many compliments on the
food! All of our food is prepared on our premises. We
have hired Chef Bryant Garner who has worked at
Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Mr. B’s Bistro and Landry’s
House of Seafood. Everyone wants the BarBQue Shrimp
or his Seafood Pasta.
BB Mag: What are the things that you want
Wilneisha to know about business and working with
people?
Lisa: I have always wanted her to be wellrounded
and informed about what’s going on around
Java Weathersby
her and around the world. I wanted her to learn that
hard work, determination and dedication does pay
off. From busing tables to writing a contract with
a client; I wanted to make sure she knew it all. She
should respect people that perform any and all tasks
for LACE. As an owner/manager, it is always important
to remember that before you started sitting behind the
desk, you once sat in front of it. Always remember
how you wanted your boss/supervisor to treat you
with respect. Now that you are the boss, show respect
and give respect. Never take employees for granted
because if it wasn’t for them, we would not be able
to live in this manner. Believe me, respect goes a very
long way.
BB Mag: Neisha, in your opinion, what makes
your mom, a good business woman?
Wilneisha: My mom is a good business
woman because she does not only look at it as just
a job. She looks at her businesses as a means to help
others. She gives her employees a chance because
she can see greatness in them. If she sees that her
employees are doing their jobs, then she will “go to
bat” for them. She often says, “If you got me, then
I will always have you.” I have learned a lot from
my mother as a professional and as a woman. On
the professional level, by her actions, she has always
taught me to stand strong in whatever I believe and to
always keep my word in whatever I do.
BB Mag: What do you appreciate about your
employees?
Lisa: What I appreciate most about my
employees is their dedication and loyalty. They know
that I am committed to them as long as they are
committed to me. I have the same philosophy at LACE
as I do at ABIDE. I always tell them that as long as I
have breath in my body, and that sign hangs outside
the door; I will take care of them as long as they take
care of me by Doing Their Job!
BB Mag: Lisa, is there ever a time when you
have to remind Neisha that you’re still Mama?
Lisa: The relationship that Wilneisha and I
share is remarkable. I have never experienced the
closeness like what we share with anyone else. I knew
that I wanted to leave a legacy for her to own and to
pass on to my grandkids one day.
There are times that I ask her to let me know
who is the mother! She is just so strong willed. I am
not saying this because she is my daughter, but I don’t
think you can meet a more respected young lady. She
doesn’t look down on people who are less fortunate
than her and she goes out of her way to help or assist
anyone. She is my blessing and I am proud to be her
mother. She inspires me.
BB Mag: Neisha, tell us a little bit about your
relationship with your mom and boss?
Wilneisha: Jokingly, we sometimes question
who the mother is and who’s the daughter in
our relationship…on a personal level, of course!
Professionally, I never question, “Who’s the boss?”
My mother will always be the boss; I’m just blessed
to have her as one. I will continue to learn a lot from
her. What has made us have such a great relationship
is the openness and trust we have. There is nothing
that I would hesitate to tell my mom. I know she has
my back and I know that she would never steer me in
the wrong direction.
BB Mag: Wilneisha, your mom has been
divorced since you were five. How do you handle her
love life?
Wilneisha: Honestly, as a child I was not as
open to the fact that I had to share my mom. As an
adult, I truly respect her love life. I understand that she
is a woman and cannot always have me to comfort her
at all times. I enjoy the conversations we share about
our love lives. We could sit on the phone for hours and
just laugh!
BB Mag: Lisa, what impact does Wilneisha
have on your decision-making in business?
Lisa: Wilneisha keeps me grounded and
reminds me that it’s a business and I can’t always be
responsible for grown folks. She reminds me of our
struggles; that we made it by the Grace of God and to
God alone do we owe all the Glory!
BB Mag: Is there a family like atmosphere
at LACE?
Wilneisha: Our mother/daughter relationship
provides LACE with a feeling of closeness and love.
When they walk into LACE, we want people to be able
to feel like they’re in a loving environment.
Lisa: We are one big happy family. We have
so much fun getting ready for an event that we could
really do a reality show!
BB Mag: Why do customers travel from all
over Louisiana to LaPlace to celebrate events at LACE?
Lisa: What appeals to our clients is having
another option to choose from in St. John the Baptist
Parish with good food, good people and good fun in a
great atmosphere. They don’t have to limit themselves
to Kenner, Baton Rouge, or New Orleans in order to
have an elegant function. They can now experience
Constance Huggins Lockman
Living Faith Academy of Excellence - Principal
6180 Winbourne Ave. • Baton Rouge, LA 70805 • 225.357.0378
The Living Faith Academy of Excellence, located at 6180 Winbourne Avenue, has had two years of successful
operation with Constance Huggins Lockman serving as principal. The Academy’s mission
statement is, “Preparing for the future; striving for excellence.”
In 2007, Bishop Raymond W. Johnson, Pastor of the Living Faith Christian
Center approached Mrs. Lockman with a vision of establishing a Christian-based
educational option to provide the proven spiritual building blocks needed to
produce boys and girls of character—who will be ready to assume their roles of
productive and successful citizens. Mrs. Lockman agreed to come out of doubleretirement
from a successful elementary school teacher career in East Baton
Rouge Parish and Palm Beach County school systems. She acknowledged
the dire need of a return to Christian-based curriculum of reading, writing,
and mathematics. Mrs. Lockman took on the responsibilities and challenges
of school administrator with the confidence and experience borne of her
years in the classroom having her mettle tried in the most demanding
environment—that of having to face up to thirty young inquisitive minds
everyday for over thirty years. Operating a new elementary school made
up of pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students, teachers, and support
staff is proving to be a new challenge that Mrs. Lockman meets with a strong
resolve and a demand for success that has been a touchstone throughout her career.
Mrs. Lockman is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a product of Southern
University holding a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education and a Masters of Arts
in Supervision and Administration. Mrs. Lockman has 30+ hours of concentrated study in
Reading and advanced study at LSU and Niagara University and Montessori Certification at
Barry University- Miami Shores, Florida.
The Living Faith Academy of Excellence’s success is measured by its Louisiana
State Department of Education A accreditation, use of the A Beka
curriculum, state of the art computer laboratory, music, art and
physical education programs, as well as the assembled corps of
inspired teachers representing over one hundred fifty years of
exceptional classroom experience. The school plans to include
the fifth grade in the 2010 – 2011 school year.
Living Faith Academy of Excellence and its principal
are committed to a comprehensive, co-educational program
utilizing a small teacher-pupil ratio affording focused
individual attention to every student. Firmly entrenched in
the educational principle espoused in Proverbs 22:6, “Train
a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will
not turn from it.” The Academy is designed to prepare its
students with the fundamentals of Christian values and
the solid knowledge mandated by God, by our society,
our culture, our community, and our world.
We are Blessed and Highly Favored!
The concept of United Southern Express Track
Club was formed during a lunch break between
Jackie Callendar and Byron Turner. The conversation
was about a shared interest of track and field. After
an extended lunch period, the vision to create a
family-oriented track organization was formed. The
club would focus on the development of athletes
regardless of age and a financial system which
would truly make track and field affordable. B.T.
Express had a hit song in the late 60’s entitled,
“Here Comes Express.” This song was implanted in
the mind of Callendar and became the motivating
factor/inspiration for the name of the newly formed
track club. Thus, United Southern Express Track Club
(US Express) became a reality in the fall of 2008.
The organization, although based in Baton Rouge,
also provides training sites in Clinton, New Roads
and St. Gabriel.
Now that they had a name and a vision, it
was time to recruit athletes. Turner sent out a simple
e-mail to a list of parents that expressed interest in
track and field. The response was fabulous. Over
100 youth athletes and 25 adult athletes responded;
making US Express currently the largest USATF track
organization in the state! Athletes range in age
from 5 to 52.
During their 2009 inaugural season, the team
was undefeated in all youth team championship
events. They had the largest number of qualifiers for
Youth Regional’s held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee
and the National Junior Olympic Championship
held in Greensboro, North Carolina. The adult
team was 1st in their Regional Indoor and Outdoor
Championships held at Louisiana State University
with several members ranked nationally.
US Express’ motto is “We Build Champions.”
0 | BeautifulBlackMag.com | 504.583.1 61
During the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic
Champion ship track meet, this motto became a
reality. Over 6,000 athletes competed over a sixday
period all aspiring for the title of “National
Champion” in their respective event. US Express
athlete, ten year old Kevin Tripeaux II, (featured
above with his father) won first place in the Bantam
Boys javelin throw with a throw of 112 feet 11
inches. Tripeaux beat out 34 other athletes in the
field to become the “National Bantam Boys Javelin
Champion.” His quest didn’t stop there, he also
finished 8th in the Bantam Boys High Jump with a
jump of 4 feet 1 ¼ inches giving him the title of
“All-American.” Kevin, a multi-talented athlete who
also plays football for the Baton Rouge Jets Junior
football team, is the son of Kevin and Kimberly
Tripeaux. Tripeaux was elated to win the title and
said “Participating in track and field is fun. I have
enjoyed meeting new friends, learning from the
coaches, and traveling to different states.” “Kevin
is a phenomenal athlete with a bright future,” states
Coach Turner, “our job now is to continue to develop
him and watch him grow.”
So many people have indicated interest in the
sport, but just don’t know where to go or who to talk
to about it. Let us provide some clarity and clear up
a few myths regarding track and field.
There are not any organizations in
the areas.
There are several organizations in the state of
Louisiana that an athlete can compete.
Please visit www.usatfsouthern.org for a list of all
organization and contact numbers. If you are an
adult with interest in competing in track and field,
visit www.southernmasters.org.
Do you have to be fast to run track?
There is more to track than running. You can race
walk, throw various implements, jump, or run
distance. Attend a track meet or visit an organization’s
practice to gain a better understanding of the many
aspects of track and field. Many athletes have to be
developed, so patience and dedication is necessary.
Am I too old to compete?
The oldest competitor on record in Louisiana
is 98. Regardless of your ability or your age, give
track and field a try.
I was told track and field was too
expensive.
Cost varies between organizations. Some
require upfront payments, while others may allow
payment plans. It is indeed a good investment. This
gives athletes an opportunity to compete against
future Olympians, travel to new places, and improve
their overall health. There is no value that can be
placed on experiences that will be with them for
life.
With all that being said, at the end of the day,
giving track and field a chance will be well worth it.
It is the foundational sport for anything you do.
Now what’s next for the United Southern
Express Track Club? They are currently looking to
expand their training sites in Baton Rouge from
one to two sites as well as other sites throughout
the state. They are scheduled to begin training
athletes for the Cross Country season beginning in
late September. As far as track and field, training is
scheduled to begin in January for the 2010 season.
Track Club….. They Build Champions!!!
By Lacy Baaheth, ABR, GRI
Decide which items you will be packing yourself and which
items you will have the movers pack. Let the movers pack
your fragile and expensive items. The advantages are they
know what they are doing, they use only the best packaging
supplies, and in case of damages, they will be liable. Here
are some suggestions to help you organize your move:
Keep an inventory!
While you go around the house and decide which items you
will take with you, make sure to write down every item.
You are solely responsible for the items you pack yourself,
so this is a great way to remember exactly what you brought
or if anything is missing? Brown boxes and plastic bags
will look a lot alike in your new home!
Separate your items!
On moving day, make the location crystal clear and
distinguish exactly what items are to be packed by the
movers. This will ensure that your medication, briefcase,
and other personal items, such as the first-aide kit or baby
food, does not get mixed in with the rest of the shipment.
Label everything!
This will help insure that boxes end up in the right rooms.
It will save you a lot of trouble. Use a heavy black marker
and write in large letters for easy reading or use pre-printed
labels.
There are three things that should appear on the box tops:
#1. Write the name of the room in which the box should
be unloaded. #2. Name the contents of each box. #3.
Mark “Fragile” on appropriate boxes. For boxes marked
“Fragile,” indicate which end is right side up! Also, label
each side of the boxes in the same way. Movers will be
using dollies and hand-trucks to transport your items, so the
boxes will be stacked. Since the tops of the boxes will be
hidden, it will be much easier to read labels on the sides,
also.
Remember these moving tips from the pros to help bring
organization to an otherwise overwhelming situation.
If you have not owned a principle residence in
three years you can be considered as a first-time
homebuyer and eligible for a tax credit up to
$8,000. Call us today for details!
By: Connie Y. Torrence-King, MS, RD
Now that the 2009 School Year is already off to a
start- let us not forget about feeding our great minds with
a healthy breakfast before we start off to school or to work.
There have been many studies which indicate children who
eat breakfast do better in school. If this is the case, adults,
would also feel great and perform better at work. I would
like to say that eating a good breakfast sets the tone and
gears you up for the rest of the day!
What really happens when you skip breakfast? When
you skip breakfast, you become tired because your body and
brain are running low on fuel. Because of a lack of time,
some might choose a coke and a pack of crackers before
lunch, but by lunch time, you are probably hungry, crabby
and a little moody.
Let’s look at a healthy breakfast:
Should contain some protein and some fiber. Protein
foods consist of meats, eggs, beans and dairy. Fiber can be
found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. An example
of a good breakfast could be a hardboiled egg or a piece of
turkey, a slice of whole wheat toast or ½ bagel, an orange or
orange juice, a bowl of whole grain cereal and low fat milk.
Avoid sugary cereals, syrups, and white breads because
they digest quickly, making you hungry and tired within a
couple of hours. Protein and fiber satisfies your hunger and
will keep you feeling full until lunch time.
If eggs and meats are not what you like to eat at
breakfast, then consider making a breakfast salad! You can
use low fat cottage cheese or low fat white cheese, salad
greens and fresh fruit. Then add walnuts and top it off with
low fat yogurt in your favorite flavor. Something different to
choose for breakfast, yet very nutritious!
Remember, whether in school or at work, eating a healthy
breakfast is the best way to start off your day. I want you
to notice how much better you feel throughout the morning
until lunch time, when you don’t skip breakfast. Gear up!
Great minds and bodies, begin with breakfast!
I’m going to take you on a journey back in time;
Back to 2339 Dumaine St. New Orleans, La 70119.
There dwelled a young lady whom I immediately grew attached to during
the years of my early childhood. She was sent from the high heaven and
owned the most beautiful pair of wings an angel of God could.
As the World Turned, those Days of Our Lives we would be Young and
Restless, but having Marlene as my big sister was priceless. Overcoming
daily trials were sometimes tearful at best, but having Marlene as my big
sister was a voice reminding “Hey girl, you know you’re still blessed.”
Laughter was and will always be the personality of Marlene. We often
made fun of the school teachers we thought were mean.
As I continued to play with Barbie, Marlene was becoming a pre-teen.
I must say again, having Marlene as my big sister was so much fun. I
often longed for those days when I made Wonder Woman capes out of
large, brown paper bags from Schwegmann’s. She was my number one
fan, although I know she tried hard to keep from laughin’.
While outside, on Dumaine St., we played ball, jumped rope and even hiden-seek.
We weren’t allowed to stay outside after sundown. We both had
to be inside before the mosquito-spray truck came ‘round. I vividly recall
one day while playing hide-n-seek, I had a frown. Some lil dude holding
Marlene’s hand came around. I think he was introduced by Angela Brown.
I rolled my eyes at him, being skeptical, not knowing that this
lil dude would someday be very special. I longed for the days when
Dumaine Street was safe and community-based…where we as kids
competed in races on roller skates. Speaking of roller skates… before I had
my first pair, Marlene and Charlie were both walkin’ on air!
I knew something was up with them, but soon after I no longer
cared…In fact, Charlie gave me a career. You see, I was assigned as the
look out kid, as they snuck smooches next to that old building in the rear.
All I had to do was say, “Somebody’s coming!” I was creative.
I knew I couldn’t be loud, so I did things like cough, or throw rocks,
signaling them to hurry up before somebody grown up, walked up.
Before the thought of text messaging, cell phones and fancy ringtones;
Marlene and I already had it goin on. We communicated through that thin
sheet rock wall that divided our shotgun house on Dumaine St.; on the
corner of N. Tonti, and across the street facing the front of Phyllis Wheatley
Elementary. The wall in the bathroom was the best place on each side to
talk because we had privacy. Those cheap walls were so thin, I heard every
string clearly, when Marlene played her violin.
When I became a pre-teen, Marlene was already sweet 16. For what I’ve
known, she was destined to be a Queen. See, during Marlene’s early
years, God had designed her perfect crown. The one she would wear in the
future when she would become one with the man
introduced to her by Angela Brown.
I had to be 10 when I realized Charlie suddenly became absent. I didn’t
know where in the world he went. I asked Marlene one day, “Where’s
6 | BeautifulBlackMag.com | 504.583.1 61
Charlie?” She told me that he’d been called to the ministry. At that time
Charlie was in his early teens, following his written instructions from Acts
9:15-16. He allowed himself to be used by the Most High God, catching
and winning souls with the Lord’s word as a fishing rod. Knowing we each
only have One Life to Live, he wanted others to know the Bread of Life
that Jesus freely gives. When Charlie disappeared, he was in training and
isolation like the prophet Elijah and John the Baptist in the wilderness.
In spite of all this, you know I still ask Marlene,
“Remember when y’all two used to kiss?”
According to God’s plan, Charles became the man God uses,
leading souls to Christ, so the lost could inherit eternal life.
Before the birth of Charles and Marlene, God planned their lives along with
their two, beautiful children. 21 years of marriage and counting; God has
already honored and rewarded them, through their obedience to Him.
In addition to Charles’ kingdomship, he is also smart and gifted to teach
Math subjects. Algebra II is a type of Math that to me seemed so abstract.
Almost caused me to get kept back! Upon my Math skills, Charles’ gift had
a definite impact! He enabled me to triumph on the muddy battlefield of
alphabets, numbers and symbols that Algebra II was firing at me.
I graduated 12th grade y’all doing the Jubilee,
on my way to serve My Country Tis’ of Thee!
Marlene is written about in Proverbs 31:10-12. That Virtuous Woman,
who will do good and not evil to her husband all the days of her life…
Charles, is the anointed and loving shepherd who loves and cherishes
his children and his beautiful wife!
I take this opportunity to thank you both for being in my life!
–Love, Jade Gibson
