QUALITY—We invest in our people.
Our customer focus drives
continuous process enhancements.
A Message from our President...
This past Tuesday was our first Town Hall meeting with all employees.
This new format is an effective way to bring all of the SmartEdge team
together to have open discussions, share ideas, discuss any topic, and
ask questions. Various team members expressed their enjoyment and
appreciation for the meeting which is great news. If you have any
feedback on the meeting please be sure to share with your manager or
any member of the Executive Committee. In the future, we will hold the
Town Hall meetings as frequent as needed and sometimes in smaller
groups, if the topic requires.
In regards to the first Town Hall meeting it is important to reiterate a few
points from the meeting.
The ownership team has been in a continuous process of perfecting SmartEdge’s strategic planning
program. For a company that has been in business for close to 30 years ,embracing and adapting to
change has not only been a survival strategy but an engine for growth. The goal of our strategic plan is to
ensure that our company is always in the best possible position for success in both times of tragedy and
triumph. Our growth plan is to maintain a focus on the core areas of Energy, Smart Buildings & Internet of
Things (IoT) including Security & Protective Systems, Facility Solutions, I.T./Industrial controls and our
Smartware solutions. SmartEdge will adjust our strategic plan to enable us to be in the best position to WIN
and always put the Customer FIRST!
Thanks to our dedicated team over the past year, we have made tremendous progress to become the bestin-class
at providing Smart and Cutting Edge Solutions to our clients. As an organization let's celebrate our
strategic wins of:
Best Practices Efficiency with the adoption of the Best Practices guide, Integrated Project Delivery
(IPD) method, updating Engineering and Estimating standards, and the SmartSales business
development program.
Innovative Business Solutions: Expanding our Smart Building Solutions to include the Internet of Things
(IoT) as a focused area for growth and opportunity within the building technology market. The
development of our Energy Edge solution, a design-build solution that will enable clients to
implement energy saving projects in an expedient manner. The launch of our Service Response
Center that will revolutionize how we provide superior service with analytics and Intelligent
Preventative Maintenance solutions.
Focused to define what we do, where we do it, and how we do it, including focusing in the areas of our
existing territory, vertical markets, and products to make SmartEdge the Best-In-Class solution.
Vision and Culture is being redefined to enable SmartEdge to be a more customer focused and
sustainable partner for our clients. A culture of accountability and collaboration through teamwork
and annual SMART goals for each employee to better understand how they can help the company
achieve its purpose and enhance their career at SmartEdge.
We will continue our planning process by aligning our people plan to our business goals. The Executive
Committee recognize that we have a remarkably talented and driven team at SmartEdge, and we will
continue to recruit for the best talent in all areas of our business. With all of us working together we will
achieve our goals of long term growth, safe and rewarding careers, and the best-in-class service for our
clients.
AccessXpert has been released!
AccessXpert is the first cloud-based access control
platform that can operate as an on-premise solution
within the end user’s private network, or in a hosted
environment, using the same UI for either application. In a
hosted environment, AccessXpert runs without servers or
the end user and eliminating costly refreshes of servers
and hardware. AccessXpert’s flexibility allows customers
to choose how the system is deployed and supports
traditional on-site applications installed within the
customer’s network. AccessXpert server requirements are
minimal.
JCI Acquisition of Tyco
As most of you know, we are a JCI Facility Explorer ABCS distributor. This news
is exciting to us because it expands our opportunities in the safety and security
industry.
Johnson Controls & Tyco Merger is Complete. This merger has no immediate effect on the Authorized
Building Controls Supplier (ABCS) independent channel or the HVAC equipment channel of which
SmartEdge is a representative of both. JCI ABCS channel partners may gain access to additional Tyco
products and services in the future. Alex Molinaroli, CEO of Johnson Controls sat down for an interview
to discuss the high-profile, multibillion-dollar merger.
Q: WHY DID THE TWO COMPANIES MERGE?
A: The combination of Johnson Controls and Tyco brings together the complementary strengths of
two great companies – Tyco’s world-class fire, security, life safety and services business with Johnson
Controls’ building products, technology, integrated solutions and energy storage. This merger brings
together best-in-class technologies, products, installation and service capabilities across building
management, fire, security, sensors/controls, HVAC, industrial refrigeration and energy storage
solutions.
Q: WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE COMBINED COMPANY?
A: The company name is Johnson Controls International plc.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS MERGER TO TYCO CUSTOMERS? JOHNSON
CONTROL CUSTOMERS?
A: This merger brings together best-in-class product, technology and service capabilities across
building management, fire, security, sensors/controls, HVAC, industrial refrigeration and energy storage
Solutions, to better serve our customers including large institutions, commercial buildings, retail,
industrial, small business and residential.
Johnson Controls and Tyco have highly complementary businesses, which enable the combined
company to offer comprehensive and innovative building technology solutions to even more customers
globally. Johnson Controls and Tyco are linking complementary branch networks and independent
channels to best serve customers around the world.
Q: THIS MERGER APPEARS TO BE AN INVESTMENT IN BUILDING PLATFORMS, SO HOW
DOES THIS CHANGE THE JOHNSON CONTROLS COMMITMENT TO ENERGY AS A
STRATEGIC GROWTH PLATFORM?
A: We remain committed to energy as a strategic growth platform. Power Solutions is an important
core business in which we continue to invest and we expect to expand as well.
Q: HOW WILL TYCO’S FIRE AND SAFETY SECURITY SYSTEMS FIT WITH JCI’S EXISTING
PORTFOLIO?
A: We partnered the largest fire alarm security company in the world along with the largest building
automation and HVAC company in the world. Together, it’s an opportunity to do something more. The
technology is going to continue to converge. As that happens, we’ll be in a position to take advantage
of that as market leaders in each one of these different segments within a building.
You can’t build a building without any of those things. You’re going to have a security system, a fire
alarm system, HVAC systems, a building automation system, all those things come with every building.
Our ability to be the leader in each one of those allows us to bring a better solution to our customers.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCES THAT SHAREHOLDERS AND PEOPLE CAN
LOOK FOR WHEN EXAMINING WHAT THIS NEW COMPANY WILL BE AS IT TAKES SHAPE
IN THE MONTHS TO COME?
A: We won’t be an automotive company anymore come the end of October. We’re going to have a
great automotive company that’s spun off of this (Adient) and those employees will be really focused
on serving that set of customers. From an employee standpoint and from a customer perspective,
you’re going to see a pretty focused company, which, hopefully, will not only give us better results, but
more importantly, will give our customers better service.
Q: WHAT’S A BEST CASE SCENARIO OF WHAT THAT NEXT PHASE LOOKS LIKE?
A: Over the next 12 months or so, we’ve got to get to know each other a little bit. We’ve got to go out
and introduce ourselves to our customers. We’ve got to figure out, not only in the short term, but long
term, what kind of technologies that we can innovate for our customers. I think that the best case if this
is successful is we not only meet our near-term objectives, but we set a platform that shows we have
sustainable growth over the next five to 10 years.
Safety First
No one wakes up thinking they will lose a loved one in a car crash that day. But every
day about 100 people die in crashes and more than 1,000 suffer life-changing injuries.
Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of death for children and young adults ages 5 to 24,
and the #2 cause of death for adults 25 and older and for toddlers, according to the
Centers for Disease Control. Crashes also are the #1 cause of workplace fatalities.
Overwhelmingly, these deaths are preventable, and you can help change these statistics.
The National Safety Council has a message for every driver: Slow down, stop using your
phone while driving, make good choices, buckle up and watch out for children. It will save
lives. And remember, you’re setting an example for your own kids.
One Call Can Change Everything
Many distractions exist while driving, but cell phone use tops the list. With some state laws
focused on handheld bans and car makers putting hands-free technology in vehicles, many
drivers assume hands-free cell phone use is safe. It's not. There is no safe way to use a cell
phone and drive.
About one-quarter, or 1.3 million crashes a year, can be attributed to using phones. NSC
advocates for stronger laws, helps employers assess their cell phone policies and provides
a free cell phone policy kit, evaluates research and educates the public to change driver
behavior.
If you are in an accident or incident, vehicle or other, please contact the following:
• Your Manager
• HR Department
• Scott Drabek
Please also remember to fill out the Employee Vehicle Accident Report or the Employee
Report of Accident, Injury, Illness or Incident (whichever is appropriate). Both forms are
found on The Start Page under the Human Resources Tab.
