A Functional Art
Reflections of a Hymn Writer
One of the finest and most influential hymnwriters
of our age, Timothy Dudley-Smith
has published around 400 hymn texts. In this
fascinating book, the author explores not only
the writing of hymns but many other aspects
including the study and singing of them. It is not
a history, a text book, or an academic treatise,
but the personal reflections of an experienced
practitioner who has been speaking and writing
on this subject, on both sides of the Atlantic, for more than fifty years.
His armchair reflections draw freely on the writings of others, and in a
discursive, almost conversational, style.
Visions
for solo violin, upper-voice choir, with harp, and strings or organ
Visions is a four-movement showpiece for solo
violin in unique combination with upper-voice
choir, harp, and strings (or organ). Inspired by
the idea of ‘Jerusalem’ both as a Holy City and a
utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss,
the composer has selected four biblical texts, in
English and Latin, that express different aspects of
this vision. The profound subject matter is taken
up in the celestial soundworld of the choir and
the virtuosic, vibrant, and expressive writing for violin, all set against a
backdrop of rich textures and harmonies in the strings and harp. The
accompaniment is available in two different instrumentations: harp and
string ensemble or harp and organ. The solo violin and harp parts are
identical in both versions.
Snow Angel
for SATB or SSAA, solo cello, djembe, and piano
David Bednall
In manus tuas
Snow Angel is an evocative five-movement choral work that explores
themes of love, rebirth, and beauty through the eyes of children and
the heavenly army of angels that watch over them, yearning to make a
difference to their lives. The work may be performed with narration, in
which three angels present their perspectives on their earthly charges.
Quartel weaves a haunting and poignant cello line throughout the
work, and a vibrant part for djembe in movement four, ‘Sweet child’,
carries the listener from the ethereal and mystical realm the work
predominantly inhabits into an emphatic anthem with a distinctly
African feel. The musical language is emotive and pictorial, allowing
performers to play an active role in the storytelling.
God will give orders/Sweet child
for SATB or SSA, solo cello, djembe, and piano
This evocative anthem, from the larger work Snow
Angel, is a piece of two halves. Opening with a
haunting cello line, the first section (‘God will give
orders’) is mystical and ethereal, until a vibrant
figure from the djembe lifts the music into the
second section (‘Sweet child’), which is uplifting
and bold in character, with a distinctly African feel
and an effective a cappella ending.
The instrumental parts are included in the vocal score.
madrigal (of the same title) for five voices.
It retains the lilting depiction of the swan and
the original composer’s love of antiphonal effects
and rich texture, providing an ideal platform for
established choirs to explore tone, blend, and
Cecilia McDowall
Drink the Sky
for SA, piano, and percussion
This is an uplifting and expressive setting of a fun, descriptive text by
Christie Dickason that characterizes the sky in an imaginative way.
The compelling melodies are underpinned by a dynamic piano part
and characterful glockenspiel and suspended cymbal. A contrasting
middle section in triple time quotes from the Northumbrian folk
song ‘When the boat comes in’, while interjections complement the
narrative. The final section is affirmatory in feel, emphatically repeating
the final line of the poem, ‘and I will grow’.
This endernight
for SATB and organ
Commissioned by King’s College, Cambridge, for the 2016 Festival
of Nine Lessons and Carols, This endernight is a tender, peaceful
setting of well-known fifteenth-century words. The recurring melody
has an appropriately lilting feel, and Berkeley employs artful textural
juxtapositions, with solo lines always opening out into a rich, full-choir
sound for the 'lullay, by-by' refrain. The organ part provides colour and
support for the voices, with sparkling semiquavers leading into the
My Perfect Stranger
for upper voices, SATB (with solos), and harp
My Perfect Stranger is a captivating setting of Kevin Crossley-Holland’s
retelling of the Christmas story. Soloists take on the roles of key
players in the narrative in the central movement, with the upper
voices taking on the role of the guiding star, as well as enriching the
texture at important moments in the story. The artful harp writing
makes for a vibrant accompaniment and a successful alternative to the
more common accompaniments for keyboard.
