Fuel injected
2-strokes a reality...
If you were at The Motul Roof Of Africa, you might have
seen two international stars, Lars Enockl and Andreas
Lettenbichler on board some plain looking KTM 300’s.
On closer inspection, we discovered that the bikes
were missing some vital components such as… errr
carburettors.
Every time we went close enough to get snaps we were
politely distracted until they figured out that it was too
late, images had gone international and we all knew
what was going on.
The bikes ran faultlessly for the duration of the race –
Lars unfortunately had a little crash and damaged his
radiator, but the experienced campaigner Letti achieved
his best Roof result ever.
Why EFI?
It all comes down to emission control laws – apparently,
these bikes run at a 200/1 oil fuel mixture. This means
less than half the oil is used when compared to the
current smoker’s which are running at around 70/1 (70
parts fuel to 1 part 2-stroke).
We chatted to Letti during
the race – he rode
with Gomez for a
while – and even
Gomez was
complimenting the
bikes performance.
“It sounds crisp
and it revs clear”, was
his comment after day
2’s race. Letti was very
complimentary about the
system – “No problems”,
he said in his usual stoic
fashion. “It is very good.”
Here’s the rub. Not only will we soon all be saving
a buck or two on 2-stroke and doing our bit for the
environment – but we’ll be saving a whole whack on
fuel. Looking at the 2017’s which were quite low on fuel
after time trial, the Fuel injected bikes still had about ¾ of
a tank to go…
We live in exciting times, 2018 is going to bring some
very cool technology…
