was “one of the most amazing
things I’ve ever gotten to do.”
Humerick and other members
of the cast had little time together
to rehearse before taking the show
to Theatre Fest, and he credits the
performance’s success on the actors’
willingness to review their
scripts over winter break to get
back into character.
Though the cast performed to
full audiences with much different
crowds than they’re used to at
HPHS, crowds who don’t know
the cast and aren’t familiar necessarily
with the work of the school’s
theater department, Humerick said
performing the show wasn’t much
different than performing it in
Highland Park.
“During the show it wasn’t really
changing because it’s such a
complicated show, because you
have a duty to the characters and
you have to focus 100 percent,” he
said.
Humerick was also taken aback
by the amount of praise received
from other students.
“One girl walked up to me and
said, ‘thank you so much for putting
on a show like that, I’ve never
seen a high school more committed
and more professional’,” he
said.
Though their time with “Equus”
is now over, the students couldn’t
be more proud about what they
achieved with the play, and what
they brought to their peers across
the state.
“What Highland Park is known
for is bringing something to Theatre
Fest that is inspiring, something
that is heart-wrenching,
something that you’ll leave the
theater feeling amazing,” Rutstein
said. “I think that’s what theater is,
it’s something there you leave the
theater and you feel that the show
has changed you.”
