TO BECOME A CERTIFIED BESTSELLING AUTHOR
HOW
J L K I N G
I am a New York Times bestselling author based
on my first book, On the Down Low, which
stayed in the top 10 for 30 weeks. Over 100
books were listed, being among the top 10 meant
On the Down Low was selling. Landing on this
list was due in part from being interviewed by
Oprah Winfrey when On the Down Low released
in 2004.
Every author dreams of becoming a certified
bestselling author. What does that mean?
Technically, a bestseller is a published book
included on a list of the top-selling titles, based
upon publishing industry and book trade figures,
library circulation statistics, reporting bookstore
chains (Amazon and Barnes & Noble), magazines,
and national newspapers. Lists are broken down
into special categories and genres. Well-known
bestseller lists include: New York Times, Publishers
Weekly, USA Today, and the Washington Post.
Earning the New York Times bestselling author title
says you have accomplished what few authors will.
To be listed as a New York Times bestselling author
can open many doors for an author. It can get you
interviews on major television shows, like Oprah. It
can get you recognized as an expert on the subject
that was written. It can also get you movie deals like
it did for J.K. Rowling. Yes, to have this title is like an
actor receiving an Oscar.
Being a guest on Oprah’s show provided me an
instant international fame, which made me a New
York Times bestseller before the show ended.
Random House shared with me that the first
print of On the Down Low (100k), sold within
minutes of broadcasting, and a second printing
was on the horizon. On the Down Low sold
rapidly for 6 weeks, which kept my book on the
New York Times top 10 list. It also made number
4 on USA Today's bestsellers list and every other
book-ranking list. The "O" effect was in full
effect, and she continued to air the show every
week for a month. In 2004, she did an “Oprah
After the Show” segment and continued my
interview which escalated the book's demand.
