Screen VS Paper Books vs E-readers has been a debate for as long as the E-readers have been around. However, even after all this time no one can say which one of the two is most popular. Today, avid reader Abigail Godwin looks at the case for both sides. How long have books been a big part of people’s lives? Since the early 18,00’s right? How long have E-readers been a big part of our lives? Since the 2000’s, correct? With technology beginning to advance it was expected that it would soon step into the reading world. However, what was least expected by the creators of the E-reader is how dear books are to people. They hold a big place in people’s lives due to the freedom they offer. Books can be expensive at times, true, but that is no different with some books on an E-reader. Today we are looking into the debate that has affected the reading world since the creation of the E-reader: which one is more popular? E-Reader Both the E-reader and a physical book have advantages and disadvantages both for a reader and for the authors who produce the stories which give us a chance of freedom from reality. In the E-reader’s case its most stated advantage is its ability to help a reader transport multiple books in a compact device. It stops a reader from being limited in what they can take with them and they have the luxury of switching between books on the go while not having to worry about it taking much space in their bags. comes from the E-readers can help those with worse eyesight to see the words more clearly and can enable the reader to read during black outs or at any time when it’s dark (though this is not advised due to the strain it can put on a reader’s eyes.) Not only are they useful but in many cases they are cheaper to buy than books, which means that they are a good way to continue reading while spending minimal money. Even well known books produced by authors such as J.K.Rowling can have her books found on the E-reader at a cheaper price which is one of the many reasons why an E-reader is more popular. These disadvantages vary greatly but they still impact upon people’s opinions of the device. E-readers are mostly not easy to break. However they can still be broken if water gets into their systems, meaning that they are not waterproof. Along with this their screen could smash if they are left without a protective casing and at times may freeze. They also have a limited storage space on them forcing you to either buy a bigger memory card or to delete the books which you have on your system. Not only this but you may be more susceptible to being a target for thieves if they see you carrying the device due to them being able to make a greater profit by selling an E-reader than they are likely to make by selling a normal book. While an E-reader is admittedly more portable and handy, they have a limited battery power which can drain quickly depending on age and the settings which you have it set to. Now we move onto physical books. Does anything make them better, more popular, more appealable to readers? Or are they as equally good and bad as an E-reader. Well, let’s find out. Books A physical book is just that, a physical copy of a book and as hard as it may be for some people to believe, this is what makes a book so popular. There is something about holding a physical copy of a book seem more valuable and helps the reader delve further into that author’s world. The writing in them is always guaranteed to be of high quality, something not always guaranteed to be found on an e-reader due to the increasing amount of authors who believe that editing constantly is not needed within an e-book. Another advantage of a physical book, one that is humorously forgotten often, is thieves are less likely to steal your book than they are an E-reader. What value is a book worth to them? Perhaps a pound at most? However, we have only just begin with the advantages of a physical book. Another advantage is that they often can be found for cheap in charity shops, at markets and even in bookstores as often stores can hold sales, especially in January when Christmas is just gone or on black Friday. However it cannot be forgotten that their values can also vary with some books being sold for thousands just because they are first editions. Books also can last a lot longer due to not being battery powered which is never a bad thing. Despite the listed advantages, books also have disadvantages. One of their biggest disadvantages is they consume space. You are limited on how many books you can take with you simply due to their size. The more you take, the heavier your bag will be and the easier it is to damage them, which, to any reader who takes pride in their books, is a bad thing. Not many avid readers like their books back damaged after all. Once again books aren’t water proof and it is near impossible to read a book in the dark. However they are also damaging to the eyes if the reader chooses to read for a long periods of time. Despite the above listed advantages and disadvantages to both books and E-readers they are still very popular. Perhaps it is because of the enjoyment they give their reader. In the end though, which one is more popular? The E-reader or a physical book. The answer is… Both. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and no matter which one you chose to read books, the reader can still experience enjoyment from it. Sure, studies show from both primary and secondary sources, that a physical book is more popular. However, in the end both are used equally as much and how and what people use to read depends on the situation that they are in. Either way, it doesn’t matter which we use to read. What matters is that you enjoy what you read and that reading keeps being popular for many more centuries to come. Advantages of a book: People prefer the sensation of a book in their hand. The story is better edited and generally higher quality. It is less likely to be stolen. It is not battery powered so the reader can spend more time reading. They can also be as cheap as E-books, especially if you buy them from a chariety shop. Disadvantages of a book: They are not waterproof. They can be damaged very easily. They are clunky and space consuming. Advantages of an E-reader: They are portable. The books are generally cheaper. They are not space consuming. The light from the screen means that they are waterproof. Disadvantages of an E-reader: Since they are battery powered they limit the time the reader can read before it is drained of life. There is a limited amount of memory on the device. You are more likely to be a target for thieves. They can be broken easily if they are dropped. Generally, E-books are usually believed to be written to lower standards. The light from the screen can be damaging to the eyes. 19
