Blockchain is a secured form of online transaction, creating a decentralised, distributed digital ledger that: • Maintains a continuously growing list of peer-to-peer transaction records, timestamped and linked to a previous block • Records transactions on 1000’s of computers, globally • Is authenticated by mass collaboration • Are resistant to retrospective data modification • Relies on established cryptographic techniques & technologies allowing each participant in a network to safely interact 2. WHY THE BLOCKCHAIN BASED CERTIFICATE MATE AND NOT JUST A NORMAL DATABASE? Great Question. It depends on your industry and application. In order to understand the basic requirements of a distributed ledger / block chain, it helps to clarify how these systems differ from regular databases, which are controlled by a single entity. The two most important differences between block chains and centralised databases can be characterized as follows: • Disintermediation. Block chains enable multiple parties who do not fully trust each other to safely and directly share a single database without requiring a trusted intermediary. • Confidentiality: All participants in a block chain see all the transactions taking place. Confidentiality is maintained via data encryption. Here are five crucial ways in which EXISTING systems (a database or paper based certificates) could fail its users: • Forgery: Transferring certificates / passports from one person to another without the subject’s permission or through ill intention of consenting parties. • Reversal: Undoing a record of training / qualification that took place at some point in the past. • Illegitimacy: Changing the type of qualification in a system without a corresponding requisite training being completed by the subject. • Inconsistency: Giving different representation of data despite international standards being established. • Downtime: Not responding to incoming requests for information at all or with extreme delay (such as administrative processing of paperwork within and across borders) A legitimate block chain solution guards against each of these by removing the need for this kind of central database operator, by allowing the users of a database to interact directly with each other on a peer-to-peer basis.
