housing projects
New spending on
housing projects
totalling £3.7bn in
England has been
announced by the
chancellor
Philip Hammond said £2.3bn would be spent on infrastructure
- such as roads - related to housing developments.
The chancellor said the money would support the building
of up to 100,000 new homes, and amounted to a
“step-change” in help for the industry.
The government has also agreed to spend an extra
£1.4bn on affordable housing in England.
Local authorities will be able to bid for the money under
one of three existing schemes : Affordable Rent, Shared
Ownership or Rent to Buy
The Treasury estimates that could lead to 40,000 more
affordable homes being built.
1
The money will top up the existing £4.7bn being spent
on grants for affordable housing over the next five
years.

PLANTWORX host new
Event Arena
– The Hub!
The next BIG event in the construction show calendar is the 3rd biennial
PLANTWORX Construction Machinery exhibition, which is just five-months away,
and will take place at its established home at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in
Leicestershire on 6th, 7th and 8th June 2017. Hosted by the CEA (Construction
3
Equipment Association), the event is on on
target to exceed the number of exhibitors at
the last show and is already 86% sold with
278 exhibitors. 74 exhibitors are brand new
to the event which is 27%.
The show will be 20% larger than the 2015 show –
with an impressive 140,000 m² of space.
Without modern, efficient plant the construction
industry wouldn’t be what it is today. It’s machinery
that makes it possible to create structures and infrastructure,
on time and within budget, so it’s vital for
construction industry professionals to stay up to
date with the latest developments - PLANTWORX
is an outstanding opportunity to do just that. The
event is the leading live action plant exhibition in
the UK and showcases all the latest equipment with
live demonstrations.
Additional features will include environmental
solutions, machine simulators, autonomous
machines and operation, drone demonstrations
and much more. An undercover seating
area will be located in the center of the arena
and other facilities will include a wifi Hotspot
so visitors can catch up on emails etc, catering
and the PLANTWORX Bar which will open at
4.30pm daily
On the final day of the show (Thursday 8th June
2017) The Hub will play host to the Primary
Engineer and Secondary Engineer Celebration
event where 26 local schools will be showcasing
their STEM engineering projects.
PLANTWORX has also become the home of innovation
and new technology. Companies are investing
more into R&D than ever before as customers’
demand more efficiency, productivity and safety
features from the machines they buy for their fleets
– the show is the perfect platform for exhibitors to
showcase these products to the UK market.
New at PLANTWORX 2017 is ‘The Hub’ which is an
event arena located at the heart of the show where
visitors can take a break from the hustle and bustle
of the show. The Hub will ‘celebrate’ innovation and
new technology - activities from The Hub and from
the main-showground will be broadcast onto outdoor
screens with live video roaming.
All PLANTWORX Innovation Award Winners will be
invited to exhibit their winning product in this area
and take part in the ‘People’s Choice Award’ where
visitors to the show will be encouraged to vote for
their favourite product, machine or service.
Productivity will also feature and there will be a
focus on Inbuilt Technology where visitors will be
able to take a ‘walk around’ machines which are
fitted with the latest in technology solutions for a
busy construction site that will improve profit margins
and help complete projects safely, on time and
on budget.
Security and safety will form part of The Hub which
will include exhibits and demonstrations from the
CESAR Equipment & Registration Scheme for the
Construction & Agricultural Industries and CITS
(Combined Industries Theft Solutions).
Here at Projects in view We’re environmentally
100% recycled paper Reduce landfill:
using recycled paper diverts
waste paper from entering landfills.
Landfills are a source of methane
emissions, which are a contributor to
global warming.
What is equally
important is that
landfills are rapidly
becoming
full, and fewer
new sites are
available.
Recycled Paper -
Positive Thoughts
There has been a
decline in global
deforestation,
thanks partly to
the increased
use of recycled
paper and the
purchasing of
paper products
that are certified
as coming from
responsibly managed
forests.
100% Recycled is an uncoated paper - as
opposed to gloss or silk materials which
are coated papers. The coated papers
and 100% recycled papers we use are all
sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Recycled paper is paper that has been
verified as being made from 100% post
consumer waste. The recycled label acts
as recognition
of
the value
of recycled
timber
and paper
products
in relieving
the pressure
on
the world’s
forests.
Recycling one tonne of paper can save
3000 - 4000 KWh electricity, enough to
power a home for nine months. Save
30,000 litres of water and reduce greenhouse
gas emissions by one metric tonne
of carbon equivalent (CO2e).
Using the official definition we use genuine
100% Recycled Paper.
BRIDGE CENTREPIECE ARRIVES IN
SUNDERLAND
9th January 2017
The striking 100m centrepiece to
Sunderland’s new bridge made its dramatic
appearance in the city at the weekend,
berthing at Greenwells Quay ahead
of transportation to site in a few weeks’ time.
The impressive white structure, which is constructed
from more than 1000 tonnes of steel
and 550 tonnes of concrete, arrived into the
Port of Sunderland at lunchtime on Saturday,
with several hundred onlookers lining the banks
of the River Wear to watch the spectacle.
Upon arrival, the pylon was met by harbour
tug boats from the North East, about a mile off
the Port entrance. It was then towed past the
Roker and New South piers before berthing at
Greenwells Quay.
The pylon will be moored at the port for several
weeks whilst final preparations are carried out
before it is transported three miles up the River
Wear to the site of the new bridge between
Pallion and Castletown.
Matthew Hunt, Port Director at the Port of
Sunderland, said the unusual arrival in the port
had caused quite a stir.
“The Port of Sunderland plays host to ships and
cargo from all over the world and, although
some very famous ships were built on the Wear
until the late 1980s, we’ve not had anything
quite as unique as this pylon for a long time,”
he said.
8
Leader of Sunderland City Council, Cllr. Paul
Watson, pointed out that reaching this latest
milestone can be attributed to the immense
work ethic demonstrated on the project to date.
“Seeing the pylon here in Sunderland for the
first time makes me personally feel very proud
of all the work that has been put in by a lot of
people to turn this project into a reality,” Cllr.
Watson said.
“There is still a lot of work to be done, but I’d like
to say thank you to everyone involved who has
ensured that we have got this far - on time and
within budget.”
With the pylon now safely berthed, attentions
have turned to the next milestone – transporting
the pylon up the river to its permanent new
home between Castletown and Pallion.
The transportation will be timed to coincide
with the high tide and will be a precise and
well-planned process. Once in location at the
construction site, the final checks will be made
before the impressive structure is raised into
position at the centre of the new bridge.
Europe’s largest construction
project
The Crossrail project is the biggest construction project in Europe and is one of the largest single
infrastructure investments ever undertaken in the UK. 75 per cent of the project has now
been delivered, and the project is being delivered on time and on budget.
Over two-thirds of the permanent track on the line has now been laid, and nearly all of the platform
structures, which will give step-free access to the 200m long trains at all of the 10 new stations,
have also been built.
Over the course of the next year, the railway and new stations will continue to take shape as the
tunnels are furnished with over 15,000km of cable which will deliver power, lighting and communications
systems through the tunnels. Over 4km of full height platform edge screens will be fitted
at stations. This will help with the circulation of air and to maintain temperature levels along with
huge vent fans that will be installed at 18 locations across the route.
Since the construction of the new railway began in 2009, over 15,000 men and women have
worked on the project and over 100 million working hours have been completed. Over 600 apprentices
have also been recruited on the Crossrail project.
£7 billion unlocked in expansion of
the government’s affordable housing
programme to meet the diverse
housing needs of the country.
Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has today
(5 January 2017) unlocked £7 billion in a
dramatic expansion of the government’s
affordable housing programme to meet the
diverse housing needs of the country.
Housing providers can now apply for a share of
the fund, which was allocated an additional £1.4
billion at the Autumn Statement to deliver 40,000
13
new affordable housing starts across the
country.
Alongside this extra funding, the government
is expanding the existing affordable
homes programme to offer a wider range
of ways of helping people into home ownership
and to provide support for those
that need affordable housing.
By expanding the variety of tenures available,
which now includes Affordable Rent, Shared
Ownership and Rent to Buy, the programme will
help meet the housing needs of a wider range of
people in different circumstances and at different
stages of their lives.
This includes homes for Rent to Buy which will
be let with rents set at or below 80% of the local
market rent for a set time period, giving tenants
the opportunity to save for a deposit and then
the option to buy their current home.
The £7 billion programme will deliver more than
200,000 homes.
Communities Secretary
Sajid Javid said:
Chairman Sir Ed Lister said:
The HCA is leading the government’s drive to
increase the scale and pace of delivery of housebuilding.
The expanded affordable housing programme
will help us continue to work with both
housing associations and developers new to this
area of the housing market to increase the availability
of affordable homes.
The expanded programme will also allow providers
the flexibility and agility to respond to local
needs and markets. This will boost housebuilding
by encouraging providers to deliver a mix
of homes for both affordable rent and low-cost
ownership that is most suited to each place.
This government is committed to increasing
housing supply and halting the decline in affordability.
Our newly expanded affordable housing programme,
turbo-charged by a multi-billion pound
investment, will allow housing associations to
build more homes in places where they are
most needed, particularly for families who are
just about managing.
By encouraging the delivery of more homes
under a variety of tenures, we can create a
housing market which truly works for everyone,
meeting the diverse housing needs of this country.
Housing Minister Gavin
Barwell said:
Up and down the country we are investing more
in affordable housing to help make the dream
of home ownership a reality for thousands more
tenants.
This includes opening up the housing market to
younger people and providing decent, affordable
homes for rent for those who cannot afford
to buy.
Bristol’s Temple Gate layout change planned in
£21m revamp
A main route into Bristol is set to undergo a major revamp
under proposals put forward by Bristol City Council.
The Temple Circus roundabout close to Temple Meads station will be built over and replaced with a
public square and a more direct route into the city.
A city council spokesman said the new square would “give life to the area day and night”.
The council has said the plans are part of a wider £21m development across the Temple Quarter
Enterprise Zone.
Plans for
the revamp
involve:
15
Creating a single wide crossing point to replace three
road crossings between the station and Brunel Mile
Clearer public transport signs and a new Metrobus stop
New cycle routes to connect with cycle paths being built on
Clarence Road, Cattlemarket Road and to the rest of the Bristol cycle
network
Theresa May will set out a 12-point plan for Brexit as she vows that the UK will not have “partial”
membership of the EU “that leaves us half-in, half-out”.
Mrs May will make her most significant speech since becoming Prime Minister in July last year
and confirm that Britain will leave the single market and customs union after Brexit.
In remarks that will delight Conservative Eurosceptics, Mrs May will pledge that Britain outside
the European Union will be a “great, global trading nation” that is “respected around the world and
strong, confident and united at home”.
The Prime Minister will make regaining control of Britain’s borders one of the central themes
of her Brexit strategy and will also make clear that the rights of UK expats will be protected.
She will make clear for the first time that Britain will not seek a watered down version of Brexit,
something that Remain campaigners are still pushing for.
The Prime Minister will say that Britain is quitting the single market and although she will be
less explicit on the issue of the customs union, her remarks will make clear that after Brexit the UK
will no longer be a member.
inReadHer remarks will be seen as a direct rebuke to European leaders who have repeatedly
claimed that Britain will have to compromise on freedom of movement if it wants membership of the
single market or customs union.
“We seek a new and equal partnership – between an independent, self-governing, Global
Britain and our friends and allies in the EU,” the Prime Minister will say in the speech in Lancaster
House in London.
“Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European
Union, or anything that leaves us half-in, half-out. We do not seek to adopt a model already enjoyed
by other countries. We do not seek to hold on to bits of membership as we leave.
The United
Kingdom is
leaving the European
Union.
My job is to get
the right deal
for Britain as
we do.”
phase.”
Darren Birch, BAM’s Framework Manager, said: “We were really pleased to
receive feedback that BAM’s team stood out as enthusiastic and one Dover could work
with. That’s something we now have to turn into detailed plans for this exciting new
building.”
Interserve wins
£16 million
contract extension
with Ministry of
Justice
Jan 16, 2017
Interserve, the international support services and construction group, has been
awarded a one year contract extension to provide total facilities management services
to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) worth £16 million.
The account builds upon Interserve’s longstanding and wide-ranging relationship
with the MoJ, which has seen the company provide facilities services to the department
for eight years. Interserve also provides the MoJ with probation services for
low and medium-risk offenders in five areas of England (Cheshire and Greater Manchester;
Hampshire and the Isle of Wight; Humberside, Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire;
Merseyside; and West Yorkshire). Working in partnership with the National
Probation Service, local charities and social enterprises, we are responsible for supporting
and rehabilitating around 40,000 offenders each year.
The extended FM account will see Interserve continue to provide a wide range of services,
including building maintenance, catering, cleaning, waste and utilities management,
at over 450 sites across the north and southwest of England, the Midlands and
Wales.
Brian Talbot, managing director for central government and defence at Interserve,
said:
“We have a strong understanding and insight into what really matters to the MoJ and
this particular opportunity to extend our facilities management services affords us the
opportunity to continue make a real difference in helping the MoJ reduce reoffending
and deliver more efficiently.”
