Competition Rules
1. Only Full Ordinary members (7 Day) and Intermediate Members may
compete in all competitions organised by the club. Country members
please check with the committee.
2. Juniors with a handicap of 10 or less may play in the club competitions
with permission of the Handicaps Committee.
3. All Juniors will be allowed to play after 2.30pm, see also Weekend play, in
allotted slots off the White tees for handicap purposes.
4. A member may not compete in any competition unless they have a
recognised official handicap. To obtain a handicap a member must submit
to the handicap committee a minimum of three cards properly recorded
and signed by a marker. Each card must be signed by a different member
of a golf club who must have a recognised handicap. Only cards showing
a score of 115 or less are acceptable (Juniors excepted) and all three
cards must be presented during a two month period.
In addition a member shall not be allowed to compete in any Major Trophy
or Special Competition held after the 31st May unless they have returned
at least two medal cards in competition in the current season.
N.B. Special competition means any competition which is not a Major
Competition and includes Knockout Competitions. The committee will
recognise a handicap obtained by a member from another club upon
receipt of written evidence from an official of that club.
5. In all competitions where an entrance fee is payable, such fees must be
paid and an official card taken out before commencing play. In multi round
competitions, e.g. Webb Cup, when playing the first round, the competitor
will state whether he intends to play the second round and if so, they must
pay for both rounds. The penalty for breach of the rules is DISQUALIFICATION.
A member failing to attend for play without prior notice after entering their
name for a competition or after qualifying for the final round without good
reason renders themselves liable to disqualification from playing the two
forthcoming competitions.
If the infringement was during a major competition, the offender may find
themselves banned from the next major competition.
6. All cards in any competition must be taken out between the hours laid
down for the competition. Normal practice will be 7.45am to 4.00pm.
Variations from these times will be duly screened. Each card must be signed
by the marker and counter-signed by the competitor within 15 minutes of
finishing the round and after the competitor has entered their score on the
computer. Cards must be handed in irrespective of score, even if “not
completed”. Failure to do so results in inaccuracies of the number of
competitors, in handicapping and in awarding of Golfer of the Year points.

Page44
Members who persistently fail to hand in cards are subject to
disqualification from forthcoming competitions. Any alteration to the gross
score on any hole should be clear and legible. Failure to comply with
signing and alteration requirements may lead to DISQUALIFICATION and is
fully covered under the R&A rules.
7. If the handicap shown on the scorecard is incorrect, the player will be
disqualified if he has played off a higher handicap, otherwise the handicap
shown will be accepted.
8. A subsidiary competition will be run in conjunction with competitions and
Major competitions. Major competitions ending in a tie for the first place will
be decided by a play off. Match play competitions : - If tied after 18 hole
play will continue by “sudden death” until resolved.
Single round competitions: - A further 18 holes will be played as soon as
possible, the time and date to be arranged by the committee. The
committee will appoint a marker for each competitor.
Multi round competitions: - After the final round if there is a tie, there will
be a 3 hole play off over holes 1,2 & 3, with 1/6 handicap allowance.
The play off will be held immediately after the completion of the final round,
and the player must be available for it, or they forfeit their right to compete
in the play off. Handicaps will not be adjusted for any play off.
Resolution of Ties – will be in accordance with R&A Rules of Golf. Rules
33-6 under guidance in Appendix1 Part C 11 of the Rules of Golf.
9. No member shall compete for a prize or be eligible to enter the
knockouts if their subscriptions are not up to date, by the time the entrance
is close for the knockouts (which will be the last day in Feb). No member
shall play or compete for a prize after 1st June if the second instalment of
their subscription has not been paid in full or monies whatsoever are in
arrears or their membership is suspended (excluding any special
arrangements made by the Hon. Secretary/Treasurer).
10. No competitor may take two prizes from any single round competition.
Multi round competitions – where there is a prize for the best score of the
day, and a separate entrance fee is paid is not subject to this rule. Prize
winners, must attend at the Presentation Evening, or write with a written
apology for absence and may send a representative, otherwise the prize
will be forfeited. Gentlemen are requested to wear a Jacket and Tie when
collecting a prize.
11. Any member returning a score in a qualifying competition (home or
away) less than the S.S.S. of the day (C.S.S.S.) and playing again before
their new handicap has been posted, MUST reduce their own handicap –
on the basis of the C.S.S.S. if known, otherwise on the basis of normal S.S.S..
Players must never increase their own handicaps. A member whose
handicaps controlled by H.G.C. and who played in a qualifying competition

at an away club, must submit their card (or signed copy), indicating the
C.S.S. to the handicap committee. If they are a member of and ‘AWAY’
club, their handicap will be adjusted by their ‘HOME’ club. If they are not a
member of and ‘AWAY’ club, their handicap will be adjustedin accordance
with CONGU rules.
12. Singles competitions will normally be played in three balls. Competitors
may go out in twos, only at the discretion of the official starter. They will
have no priority of play over three ball matches.
In Foursomes and 4 Ball competitions it is not acceptable to reserve
starting times for self and ‘partner’ Opens excluded. If one’s partner cannot
be named, reservations must not be made. Penalty for abuse – both entries
will not be accepted.
13. All competitions shall be under the control of the Handicap Committee,
and competitors will observe the rules and regulations laid down by the
board, both in particular and the general.
14. The reference to members in the foregoing rules shall included Junior
members.
15. Non-competitors shall not be allowed to play during times allocated
specially for competitors.
16. Tuesday is Ladies’ Day.
17. The handicap committee may, subject to Board approval, change the
above rules ifis is considered such action is necessary for the benefit of the
club and its members. The professional Mr. Daniel Marsh, is the authorised
Committee for all stroke play, Bogey and Stableford competitions organised
by the club. He will be responsible for all decisions from the time the first
card is issued until the competition is closed in accordance with R & A
Rules of Golf – Rule 34-3, his decision shall be final.
Weekend Play
On Saturdays and Sundays when no official competitions have been
arranged, 5 Day members may only commence play between 11am and
12 noon, or after 2.30pm. Junior members cannot commence play until after
2.30pm unless they have attained a handicap of 26 or less and playing
with a senior member.
Country Members
Country member may not play in Major competitions. Otherwise they may
compete on one weekend per month unless other special arrangements
have been made. They may not win a competition, but a special prize will
be awarded if the return a winning score.
Rakes
It is now a club rule that each group of players carry with them at least
one bunker rake. Failure to do so may result in a ban.

Common Sense & Etiquette
Courtesy on the Course
In the interest of all, players should play without delay No player should
play until the players in front are out of range. Players searching for a ball
should signal the players behind them to pass as soon as it becomes
apparent that the ball will not easily be found; they should not search for
five minutes before doing so. They should not continue play until the players
following them have passed and are out of range. When the play of a hole
has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green.
The marking of a score card should not take place whilst on the green.
Behaviour during play
Before taking a swing, the player must ensure no-one is standing in a
position to be hit by the club. No one should move, talk or stand close to
or directly behind the ball ro the hole when a player is addressing the ball
or making a stroke. The player who has the honour should be allowed to
play before their opponent or fellow competitor tees their ball. At all times
player should show respect to their fellow competitors in the spirit of the
game of golf.
Priority on the Course
In the absence of special rules, two ball matches should have precedence
of and be entitled to pass any three ball or four ball match. A single player
has no standing on should give way to a match of any kind. Any match
playing a whole round is entitled to pass a match playing a shorter round.
If a match fails to keep it’s place on the course and loses more than on
clear hole on the players in front it should allow the match following to pass.
Care of the Course
Players should avoid damage to the course when taking practice swings, in
particular removing divots on the tees. Before leaving a bunker, a player
should carefully rake and smooth over all holes and footprints made by
them. Players should avoid damage to the greens when putting down bags
or the flagstick and should avoid damage to the hole caused by standing
close to it when handling the flagstick or removing the ball. Through the
green, a player should ensure that any turf cut or displaced is replaced at
once and pressed down. Any damage to the putting green made by the
ball, for example a pitch mark is carefully repaired.
Dress
Members are requested to maintain a reasonable standard of dress both
on the course and in the clubhouse. Gentlemen please wear jackets, collars
and ties at presentations and General Meetings.

Litter
Please do not leave litter lying about the course. Please place any litter in
the bins provided to help maintain our high standards for our members and
visitors alike.
Dogs
No dogs are allowed in the clubhouse or on the course.
For Safety Reasons
a. Players on the 13th hole to give way to players on the 3rd green.
b. Players on the 8th tee have priority over the 7th tee.
c. Players on the 17th green to give way to players on the 15th tee.
Handicap Allowances
In accordance with CONGU Unified Handicapping System
Appendix F
Strokes must be taken according to the handicap stroke index.
Match play
Singles
Full difference between the handicaps of the two players.
Foursomes
½ difference between the aggregate handicaps of both sides.
Four-Ball (Better ball)
90% of the difference between your handicap and the lowest handicap of the
4 players.
Stroke Play
Singles
Full Handicap
Foursomes
½ aggregate handicap of partners
Four-Ball (Better ball)
Each player receives 90% of full handicap
Stableford
Singles
Full Handicap
Foursomes
½ aggregate handicap of partners
Four-Ball (Better ball)
Each Partner receives 90% of full handicap
The reckoning in Stableford competitions is made by awarding points in
relation to a fixed score (par) in net terms according to the player’s handicap

and in relation to the stroke index of the hole, as follows:
Net bogey (1 over par)
1 point
Net par (level par)
2 points
Net Birdie (1 under par)
3 points
Net Eagle (2 under par)
4 points
Net Albatross (3 under par) 5 Points
Greensomes
2 man teams with both players teeing off then the best drive selected,
alternate shots played from that point onwards. Repeat on each hole. Lower
handicap x 0.6 plus Higher Handicap x 0.4.
If the players have equal handicaps then their greensomes handicap would
be half of their combined handicaps.
Four ball Medal – Sunningdale System
Take 6 strokes off the lower handicap and add 1/3 of the difference between
the two starting handicaps.
e.g. 16 and 10 would be: 6 shots off 10 = 4, the difference between 16
and 10 is 6, therefore 1/3 of 6 =2. So their handicap allowance would be
4+2=6shots.
Bogey Competition
Players play against the par of each hole. Scoring is as follows
Net Bogey or worse
loss of hole
Net Par
Halved hole
Net Birdie or better
Win hole
e.g. 8 wins 5 losses and 5 halves would result in a total of 3 up or +3.
NB: if you win or half a hole the actual score you got on that hole must also
be recorded, it is not enough to just put down win/lose/half. Not necessary
on lost holes. Failure to do this will result in disqualification.
Texas Scramble
Each team to consist of 3 or 4 players. All players tee off on all holes. The
nominated team captain then selects the drive to be used and marks the
position with a tee peg (not nearer the hole). The other players then retrieve
their balls. A minimum of 4 tee shots per player in teams of 4 and 5 tee shots
per player in teams of 3 must be used. All players then play within 6 inches of
the tee peg (not nearer the hole) in any order. NOTE: The ball may be placed
on the fairway but dropped from any other area off the fairway or in a
hazard. The above method of play is followed until the green is reached. On
the green the same method applies. The ball chosen is marked and all players
play from that spot in any order. Each player marks the ball after putting. Play
continues from each chosen position until the ball is holed. NOTE: if a player
putts and misses but then inadvertently knocks the ball into the hole
that score counts. Handicap allowance is: Team of 4 (1/10th of combined
handicaps) Team of 3 (1/8th of combined handicaps)
.

Handicap Notes.
1: Half Strokes. Half strokes or over to be counted as one, smaller fractions
are disregarded except in foursomes stroke play when ½ strokes are counted
as such.
2: Handicap Allowances. In a handicap competition played in any of the
above formats the allowance must be laid down by the committee in the
conditions of the competition (Rule of Golf 33-1) in accordance with the
above direction.
3: 36 holes. In handicap competitions over 36 holes strokes should be given
on the basis of two 18 hole rounds in accordance with the 18 hole handicap
stroke index unless the committee introduces a special stroke index.
4: Hole-by-hole playoff (sudden death) when extra holes are played in
handicap competitions strokes should be taken in accordance with the stroke
index
Qualifying Competitions
The score in stableford and bogey competitions is equated to a medal score.
In such competitions:
a) Medal play conditions must prevail.
b) Full stroke allowance is given, if a handicap limit applies, handicaps
will be calculated on full handicap.
The standard scratch score is the score of a course. It is the score expected
from a scratch player playing from the medal tees; The S.S.S. must not be
allocated amongst individual holes, but should be printed as a total on the
