AHappy New Year to all our readers! 

Few people would argue that 2016 was not a time of 

immense change, with most individuals and businesses 

being impacted by Brexit in some way. For businesses especially, 

there are continuing challenges ahead driven by key factors such 

as market confidence, exchange rates and uncertainty over where 

and when any future trade deals might land. But let’s stay positive 

during what is likely to be an extremely protracted process. 

I joined the Processing & Packaging Machinery Association 

(PPMA) a year ago, and, during that time I have been 

overwhelmed and thoroughly impressed by the drive, 

ingenuity and resilience of this industry. It is these very positive 

characteristics that I believe will take us forward during these 

tumultuous times while helping our customers to do the same.

In any business environment, several key characteristics will 

always stand out. One is quality; another is innovation. 

I would argue that there will always be a market for innovative 

and high quality engineered products or services and our PPMA 

members offer these in spades. 

Throughout my career I have found that whenever there has 

been high quality, a competitive edge follows. One of the things 

I’ve learnt from speaking to other international organisations 

during my first year in this role is the high regard our members 

are held in throughout the world. Especially in terms of the 

innovation and quality their products offer. 

Innovation always stands out and makes us stronger, and, 

while it may be copied in the future, the value of inventors and 

true innovators cannot be underestimated. 

It is these qualities that I believe will see us through whatever 

challenges the market may throw at us in the coming months. 

Here at the PPMA, we also strive to maintain our quality and 

an innovative approach going forward and I urge you to read 

more about our latest initiative – a one day machine vision 

conference and exhibition taking place on 27 April at MK Arena 

in Milton Keynes. You’ll find further details on page 7. 

I wish all our readers a very successful 2017, and I hope for 

those of you looking to invest in new equipment, or looking for 

inspiration or new ideas, that many of them will come from the

PPMA celebrates double 

success for its 30th year 

The PPMA Group 

of Associations is 

celebrating a double run 

of success after it announced 

its 500th member as well as 

record bookings for its PPMA 

Show exhibition in 2017. 

Minebea Intec, formerly 

known as Sartorius Intec, 

supplies weighing, line

control equipment and is 

the latest company to join 

the association. 

Speaking about the decision 

to join the PPMA, Colin Maher,

The Safety Council 

welcomes new HSE 

workplace strategy 

The British Safety Council has 

welcomed the HSE strategy 

focused on health and its 

importance in the workplace 

that was launched by Penny 

Mordaunt, Minister of State 

for Disabled People, Work and 

Health before Christmas. 

The Safety charity hopes that 

the HSE Health and Work 

Strategy will provide leadership 

and focus for the industry on 

this important issue. 

This new strategy, which 

is linked to the Helping Great 

Britain Work Well strategy 

launched a few months ago, 

is focused on reducing workrelated 

stress, lung disease and 

musculoskeletal disorders.

Jenton and Dimaco join 

to offer inspection units 

Jenton International 

has taken a controlling 

interest in fellow-PPMA 

member company Dimaco. 

Jenton believes the 

automated vision and label 

inspection systems developed 

by Dimaco will be a perfect 

fit with the existing Ariana 

seal testing and automation 

systems range that it 

manufactures in Whitchurch. 

Dimaco supplies optical 

and image processing 

equipment within the 

packaging industry, in 

particular to the food, 

beverage, cosmetics and 

pharmaceutical sectors and 

all of these systems meet the 

automated vision inspection 

requirements of major UK 

supermarkets. 

These vision and label 

inspection products form a 

vital link in the traceability 

chain and ensure label quality.

US market is set to grow as it 

deals with the SKU explosion 

The value of US domestic 

shipments of packaging 

machinery is projected 

to grow at a compound annual 

growth rate of 2.4%, reaching 

$8.5 billion in 2020, according 

to PACK EXPO owner 

and producer PMMI, the 

Association for Packaging and 

Processing Technologies. 

More than half of this 

business growth is expected 

to come from the food and 

beverage sector. 

The report also notes the 

value of domestic shipments 

of US-produced machinery 

rose 0.3% to $7.51 billion in 

2015. Exports of packaging 

machinery in that year 

increased by 3.3% and are 

now $1.1 billion. 

PMMI released the findings 

of its 2016 State of the Industry 

US Packaging Machinery 

Report during the PACK 

EXPO International and 

Pharma EXPO exhibition last 

November (see pages 20-21 

for the full show review). 

The report analyses 28 

machinery categories 

and found that labelling, 

decorating and coding and 

case handling were sectors 

Jorge Izquierdo is from PMMI and is upbeat in his assessment of US market 

forecast to increase the fastest 

up to 2020. 

“The forecast for the 

packaging machinery 

market is strong,” says Jorge 

Izquierdo, vice president, 

market development at PMMI. 

“Factors such as changing 

consumer habits, new 

regulations as well as general 

economic development are 

fuelling this growth.” 

As for UK end users that 

visited the Chicago-based 

exhibition, Izquierdo felt 

there were three major trends. 

“The trend towards flexibility 

in packaging machinery is 

stronger than any other time 

in the past and throughput 

is taking second place as the 

industry plays catch up with 

the SKU explosion,” he tells 


“With more and more 

legislation on food safety 

and pharma, compliance is 

a job by itself,” he continues. 

“Machinery equipped with 

sensors, controls to monitor 

key operating procedures and 

the ability to communicate the 

information with ERP systems 

are now becoming a must for 

packaging and processing 

equipment,” he says. And 

finally, he talks about the 

emphasis on technologies 

designed to deliver tracability 

and brand protection. 

Asked how he thought 

Brexit will impact any future 

US/UK relationships, he felt 

there would be very little 

in the short term. He did, 

however think that this would 

go through a redefinition in 

the next years (2018-2019) 

and eventually strengthening 

in years ahead as American 

manufacturers tend to see 

the UK as potential partners 

in developing international 

markets.

Training meets need 

for production gains 

As part of an on-going strategy to 

further strengthen service delivery, 

food industry contaminant 

inspection company Loma 

Systems has established a global 

Customer Training Academy. 

This latest initiative is designed to 

maximise production efficiencies. 

A new electromagnetic machinery safety 

service will assist regulation compliance 

TÜV SÜD Product Service has 

launched its electromagnetic 

fields (EMF) machinery safety 

service which is designed 

to help both machinery 

manufacturers and end-users 

ensure that they comply with 

the Control of Electromagnetic 

Fields at Work Regulations. 

The regulations set the 

minimum health and safety 

requirements for the exposure of 

workers to potentially hazardous 

electromagnetic fields. TÜV 

SÜD’s new service will include 

EMF measurements and risk 

assessments of the machinery 

environment, to ensure 

compliance against a wide range 

of legislation and standards, 

including CE marking, the 

Machinery Directive 2006/42/ 

EC, and the Provision and Use 

of Work Equipment Regulations 

1998 (PUWER). 

“Exposure to unsafe levels 

of EMF can cause a rise in body 

temperature, burns, shocks 

and other adverse conditions,” 

says Neil Dyson, business line 

manager for Machinery Safety 

at TÜV SÜD Product Service. 

“It can also affect people 

indirectly if they wear 

implantable electronic devices 

such as heart pacemakers. 

“The Regulations state 

that a dedicated competent 

person undertakes a workplace 

assessment that must be 

fully trained in order to 

deliver against compliance 

requirements,” he continues.

Among the highlights on 

show were models from its 

x-ray range, a special line for 

the precise and fast pick-andplace 

packing of cut-ups into 

trays and subsequent quality 

inspection, and the latest 

developments in multihead 

weighing and checkweighing 

technology. 

Two models from the new 

IX series x-ray range were 

shown. The IX-GN-4044 can 

detect pieces of stainless steel 

as small as 0.3mm in diameter, 

plus aluminium, glass, stones, 

rubber, dense plastic and shell 

at high speeds. It is suitable 

for a wide variety of packed 

and unpacked products 

and includes a built-in air 

conditioning unit. The second 

model on show was the 

IX-G2-4027 which specialises 

in bone detection in meat. 

The centrepiece of the 

AirScan uses special laser technology to detect leaks in MAP packed trays 

dedicated line for meat and 

poultry cut-ups was Ishida’s 

RobotGrader, which combines 

weighing and pick and place 

technologies to grade products 

of varying piece weight 

and place them into a fixed 

weight pack. The filled trays 

are subsequently sealed by 

Ishida’s mid-range QX-775-Flex 

tray sealer before undergoing 

leak detection in Ishida’s 

new AirScan, which uses 

advanced laser technology 

to detect the smallest leaks 

in trays packed in a modified 

atmosphere. 

Various multihead weighers 

including the Micro version 

completed the display 

along with the DACS-G 

checkweigher which was 

demonstrated with a fully 

integrated CEIA metal detector 

and with full reject failsafe

Tablet counting line delivers a 

safe environment for operators 

Rudolf Deckert has just 

delivered its popular 

TVM mono-block tablet 

counting line fitted with glove 

ports to a customer handling a 

cancer drug that is both dusty 

and toxic to the operator. 

To combat this, the tablet 

counter and all the sorting 

bowls were covered with 

polycarbonate hoods while 

inside the machine, guarding 

extraction caused an under 

pressure to minimise the 

escape of toxic dust. 

Any operator interventions 

can only take place through 

the glove ports. 

Meanwhile, a rapid transfer 

port was fitted onto the tablet 

infeed to allow containing 

product loading. 

This particular TVM tablet 

counter includes a host 

of features and processes 

including air cleaning with 

deionised air, counting, 

broken tablet inspection, 

capping, induction sealing 

and re-torqueing. A sensor 

verifies the presence of

The tablet counter is also 

fitted with automatic feeding 

plate removal. At the touch of 

a button, the vibratory plates 

lift to allow the operator to 

remove the product contact 

parts for cleaning easily. 

“It is not necessary to 

adjust cogs and regulators 

underneath the machine table 

between format changeovers 

which means that changeover 

is faster and more consistent,” 

explains Rauch. “The TVM 

mono-block counting line has 

the advantage that a single 

star-wheel presides over all 

operations,” he continues. 

“This means that changeover 

parts and therefore all the 

changeover times are greatly 

reduced.”

with an integrated labeller 

and with weigh cells under 

the star-wheel.

Optimised case packing solution 

meets flour miller’s requirements 

A 

specialist miller and 

supplier of fine flours to 

the UK supermarkets has 

become the first company to 

put Pacepacker and Endoline’s 

E-Pac optimised case packing 

solution to the test. Close 

cooperation between the two 

companies yielded a bespoke 

three-step case erecting, packing 

and sealing system that has 

eliminated manual handling 

on the flour packing line. 

“We wanted a system to 

replace our labour intensive 

case packing operation, 

which involved laborious 

and strenuous manual 

handling,” explains the 

milling company’s production 

director. But finding a solution 

was proving problematic 

until, having worked with 

Pacepacker Services for 

several years, the miller felt 

confident in the team’s ability 

to engineer a bespoke case 

loading design.

The resulting fully automated 

case packing line is handling 

1.5kg bags of flour and was 

based on the new E-Pac 

concept, born out of an 

alliance with Endoline 

Machinery. By combining 

Endoline’s expertise in case 

erecting and sealing with

know-how, the result is a 

full turnkey system that 

eliminates manual handling 

from the process entirely. 

The line has been up and 

running since spring 2016, 

with the miller reporting that 

it has eliminated a potential 

source of injury and tedious

excess of 1,000 tonnes of flour 

a week, is another step ahead

Gordian Strapping has supplied 

an OMS IS43 stretch hooder to 

Crown Paints in Darwen, Lancs. 

The company required a 

stretch hooder for this emulsion 

manufacturing plant in Darwen to 

ensure that its 10 litre emulsion 

paint tubs are packaged securely 

for transport. Initially, Crown had 

considered packaging these large 

tubs using a stretch wrapper, but 

a hood applicator was chosen to 

stop the buckets ‘hooking and 

hanging’ while in transit. 

The OMS IS43 secures 

the load on the pallet using 

downward stretch forces through 

the hooding process with 

minimum side force to protect the 

tubs from compression forces. 

In addition, the film is locked on 

the pallet base using a ‘roping’ 

method for added securement. 

Having researched the market, 

Crown selected the IS43 stretch 

hooding machine after testing 

the new method on palletised 

product with positive results. 

The operator friendliness of 

the machine, and the fact that 

all film loading and servicing is 

conducted at ground level were 

added advantages for the paint 

manufacturing giant.

stretch seal pack to 

launch its cut up poultry 

products in the Saudi market 

following the installation of 

a Trave 1200 tray sealing 

system from Mondini. 

This system delivers speeds 

of up to 70 a minute on the 

450g pack which includes 

full printing of the top film. 

The Trave 1200 system is 

integrated into the current 

cutting line and delivers the 

performance and reliability 

that management at 

Al Watania were looking for. 

The slim design offers 

unrivalled performance 

achieved in a small factory 

footprint which was crucial 

for production management 

at the plant, says Mondini.

Automated system gives

UK has invested in 

automation to ensure 

compliance with retailers’ 

codes of practice. The OAL 

system has prevented label 

and packaging errors that 

can result in substantial 

fines and help identify areas 

for improvement during 

production. 

The company recognised 

that to maintain its excellent 

relationships with its retail 

customers, it needed to secure 

the factory by proactively 

investing in automation. 

Working with OAL, the 

company has ensured the 

correct packaging and labelling 

are applied to products by using 

a single automated system to 

control its packaging lines 

while also integrating existing 

packaging devices. 

“We chose the OAL system 

because it’s a tried and 

tested solution that provides

a new order for a robotic cask 

handling system from another 

major UK brewer. 

The customer required a 

system to automatically un-stack 

empty casks once they were 

delivered to its cask line. As well 

as unstacking the empty casks, 

the system was also required to 

un-stack two separate variants 

of locator boards onto which 

the casks would be stacked. 

The system also had to be 

capable of re-stacking the full 

casks once they had been filled 

(automatically placing a locator 

board between each layer at the 

same time).

Schubert has responded to its customers’ demands by designing 

exchangeable product-specific tools to make changeovers easier

and thus need to adjust their 

portfolio and product formats 

regularly. Therefore, the time 

required to carry out a size change is 

becoming more important which 

is why Schubert designed in flexibility 

during the development of its TLM 

packaging machines. 

“Packaging machines can be called 

flexible when they can be used to pack 

various sizes of different products 

into different containers in different 

quantities,” says Mark Jocelyn, sales 

director at Schubert UK. “And better 

still if you can add on additional functions 

later while increasing output rates. 

“The TLM packaging machines from 

Schubert offer all of these advantages 

while we have also developed automatic 

format changing by focusing on 

exchangeable product-specific tools,” 

he tells Machinery Update. 

The Transmodul is one of the standard 

components that increases flexibility 

significantly in the equipment. 

It is a single-axis, rail-based robot 

which features contactless power supply 

and communication within the TLM 

system. Vested with its specific format 

tools and integrated vacuum system, 

the Transmodul conveys product and 

packs through the entire packaging 

system. Additionally, Schubert can 

significantly improve quality inspection 

by means of its 3D vision system. 

The company has provided flexibility 

across the entire dairy sector with Schubert 

machines handling milk cartons, butters 

in standard as well as in portion packs, 

various yogurts and even coffee creamers. 

HANDLING BUTTER CAREFULLY 

For instance, Schubert supplied Elle 

& Vire in Condé-sur-Vire, France with 

a TLM machine that packs 1,000 butter 

portion packs per minute into boxes. 

The butter portions arrive on a total of four 

tracks from two upstream machines. 

The temperature of the butter is about 

15deg C so the portion packs are very soft 

and need to be handled carefully as a result. 

Therefore, the packs are grouped on the 

Transmodul by F4 robot arms very carefully 

so as not to damage the product. To reduce 

the number of robot arms and the amount 

of space required, groups of three, four or 

five products are formed, which are then 

transferred together by the F4 robots. 

The new TLM packaging machine is 

replacing two older machines at this dairy. 

The feed performance was doubled 

without changing the amount of space 

required, and the new machine boasts 

the flexibility to handle pack types 

that were previously not possible. 

Meanwhile, when Finnish producer of 

dairy products Juustoportti received an 

enquiry from a major retail customer to 

pack yoghurt in 2 and 4 packs, the owner 

of the dairy giant Timo Keski-Kasari 

approached Schubert for a solution. 

Schubert proposed a TLM packaging 

line consisting of three modules equipped 

with F2 robots in combination with the F3 

presentation units and two Transmodul 

lines to ensure flexibility on a small footprint. 

Since the system packs the cups in 

sleeves and then immediately puts 

them into the trays, this system requires 

significantly fewer interfaces than similar 

solutions. Another special feature of this 

project was placing the cups in cartons 

of ten in a way that would prevent any 

slippage during transit. 

The Schubert solution consists of 

folding the bottom carton so that the 

individual cups are fixed on four sides.

level of flexibility includes F44 robots

These cups are detected optically and 

pre-grouped in the correct position (uniform 

label orientation) according to the packing 

pattern. At the same time, the scanner 

checks whether the cup is sealed with a lid. 

“The open VMS control architecture 

not only enables conventional signal 

exchange between the packaging line 

and filling machine, but cup filling 

can also be controlled using the VMS 

for optimum synchronisation of both 

machines,” explains Jocelyn.

OAL’s process can 

reduce fat in dairy 

sauces by up to 20% 

Scientific research from 

the University of Lincoln 

has shown that food 

manufacturers can reduce 

fat in dairy-based sauce 

products by up to 20% by processing 

with the disruptive steam infusion 

vaction technology, says Jake 

Norman from OAL. 

Under certain operating 

conditions, when passing dairy 

ingredients through the steam 

infusion vaction unit, a fat mimetic 

is formed which mimics the fat 

properties in sauces. For bechamel, 

cheese and hollandaise sauces, 

a creamier mouth feel is achieved 

while maintaining the sauces 

viscosity compared to cooking with 

a traditional steam jacket. 

Traditionally, to offer consumers 

a luxury, indulgent mouth feel a 

butter or cream addition is required 

which gives the final product a 

high dairy fat content. However, 

the University findings provide 

interesting areas for new product 

development that can offer ‘healthy 

indulgence’ asserts OAL.

technology under an Innovate UK

and operational opportunities of 

the device. 

Many food manufacturers have 

already switched to cooking dairybased 

sauces with the technology.

“We are very happy with the 

retrofit of OAL’s steam infusion

porridge,” explains Janet Prescott, 

manufacturing manager at 

Bakkavor. “We have been able to 

quickly master how to maximise 

the benefits of the steam infusion 

system and we’re confident that the 

technology offers the flexibility 

to cook a wide variety of products 

to delight our customers. 

“The system is very fast and 

has reduced our cooking energy 

consumption by 15%,” she 

continues. “It’s a quality piece 

of equipment that’s definitely 

‘cook proof’.”

The recently released 

whitepaper from the University 

of Lincoln highlights other areas 

of differentiation to traditional 

manufacturing including the 

prevention of Maillard reactions 

and retention of ‘homemade’ 

colours and flavours. The vaction 

unit creates a partial vacuum 

within the unit preventing 

exposure to high temperatures and 

browning of any product. 

Gas Chromatography-Gas 

Spectrometry identified a 

difference in flavour profile, while 

layperson taste panels recognised 

an improvement in flavour between 

a conventionally cooked and a 

steam infusion processed sauce. 

Both highlighted the 

preservation of delicate fresh 

flavours and prevention of 

over-processed notes. 

The explanation for ‘homemade’ 

flavours comes from the shortened 

cooking times and prevention of 

burn on contamination, says OAL.

Combo unit 

saves time

SCS UK Ltd recently installed a twin lane 

combo unit consisting of a metal detector 

and checkweigher at Village Dairy in 

Denbigh, North Wales. 

This system is handling 125g pots of 

yogurt running at 440 pots a minute on 

a tandem system with 220 pots per 

minute on each side. 

Project manager at Village Dairy 

Michael Burrows has been delighted 

with the performance of the unit since 

installation. “We are now able to monitor 

each individual product which has 

reduced our daily overfill, saving us 

money and time,” he says. “We are able 

to fill each pot to the nominal required 

weight with ease and the reports that 

are generated after each production run 

are very user friendly and give the exact 

information that our records require.” 

Indeed, the company has been so 

impressed with the unit that it has asked 

SCS to install a second metal detector on 

another of its production lines. 

The unit has separate reject points for 

metal contaminants and weight rejects 

making it 100% secure. Metal detected 

product is rejected into a locked bin prior 

to the checkweigher for added security. 

After the metal detector, the pots pass 

over the checkweighing section of the 

machine where the products are weighed 

dynamically and recorded according to 

the Average Weight legislation. If weights 

are recorded below the tolerance they are 

rejected from the production line into a 

weight bin fitted with sensors to ensure 

the pack is removed from the line.

(SSHE) is on the rise for high 

viscosity dairy products 

and those applications needing precise 

temperatures immediately prior to further 

processing,” says Christopher Holland, 

managing director of UK agent Holmach. 

Two recent applications for the 

Terlotherm were for heating whey 

proteins to feed existing spray dryers 

or evaporators. The rapid and accurate 

heating optimises the drying process for 

these types of products as both a food 

ingredient or as a functional food used by 

athletes. The energy savings are a major 

advantage compared with traditional 

tubular or plate exchangers which are 

limited because of their potential to burn, 

reducing size and footprint. 

The Terlotherm hygienic heat exchanger 

prevents burning but is able to heat with 

little shear, or increased agitation. 

As a vertical exchanger, the design 

eliminates the need for hydraulic opening 

for maintenance; the single mechanical 

seal is not disturbed for maintenance 

or inspection. 

Reduced downtime is a major benefit 

as well as cost savings over traditional 

SSHEs which need to be dismantled 

between production runs. 

As well as heating, the Terlotherm 

is widely used for dairy sauces and 

confectionery as rapid heat transfer is 

achieved without crystallisation. 

Applications for cooling processed 

cheese can also be carried out, taking 

temperatures from 8degC to below 

4degC in about 90 seconds, as required.

Metal detection is not an 

adequate solution, because of 

the aluminium foil lids on the 

pots. However, he explains,

and the only way to ensure 

complete inspection was a 

thorough check of the machine 

each day. While Olympia still 

inspects the machines, this 

is now complementary to 

the technology and enables 

the company to inspect the 

condition of the machine at 

the same time. 

“Today, x-ray prices are 

much more reasonable and 

this makes the investment 

worthwhile,” he says. 

“And we can also benefit from 

the additional product quality 

monitoring.”

for 14 years because of their proven reliability

The recently-installed printers are the 

latest in over 100 Linx machines that are 

in operation at Tnuva sites across Israel as 

part of a long-standing 14 year partnership 

between the company and Linx’s Israeli 

distributor. The 7900 models are working 

in conjunction with an Erca form, fill and 

seal machine providing two lines of code 

– best before date and printing time – 

onto the printed paper lids. 

Advanced QuickSwitch software allows 

fast changeovers between products or 

messages, with simple automated set-up, 

and the printer’s SureFill system ensures 

mistake-proof refills. 

In addition, Linx PrintSync enables 

automatic print format selection, using 

the line speed to provide the best possible 

print quality. 

The Linx 7900 has been designed to 

deliver the lowest possible running costs

However, the strong 

foaming properties of milk, 

especially skimmed milk, 

present challenges. Foam 

in the filling vessel can fool 

instrumentation into giving 

false signals leading to 

under filling of bottles with 

consequent product rejects 

and production downtime. 

Product build-up on 

the instrument and harsh 

cleaning regimes can cause 

sensor failures that result 

in stoppages and frequent 

replacement. The problem of 

foaming liquids is common 

in many food and beverage 

processes. Level measurement 

systems typically used in 

filling processes such as 

multi-point float switches 

and capacitive sensors are 

particularly sensitive. 

So, to discount the false 

signals that foam can trigger,

“Level sensors are required 

instrumentation in stainless 

steel milk filler vessels to 

ensure a consistent level of 

product is maintained in the 

header tank and is therefore 

sufficient for the filling 

mechanism to deliver an 

accurate volume of milk 

to each bottle,” explains 

Darren Pratt, Sick UK’s 

industrial instrumentation 

product manager. 

“At one leading milk 

processor, capacitance probes 

were unable to distinguish 

reliably between the foam 

and liquid,” he continues. 

“As a result, the control system

pressure sensor was being 

used in a similar filling vessel. 

In this case, the thermal shock 

caused by harsh hot and cold

every three months.

manufactured from food 

grade stainless steel making 

it resistant to Clean-in-Place 

and Sterilise-in-Place regimes.

temperatures from -20deg C to 

+150deg C and pressures from 

-1 to +16 bar so it is suitable 

for a wide range of processing 

conditions. 

It is resistant to the thermal 

shock from rapid temperature 

changes and cleaning cycles 

with aggressive chemicals.

A variety of dairy products can be handled on the 

machine including yogurt, soft cheese and jellies 

INV PACK (formally Inever) has 

developed the PH800 Ultraclean, 

an eight lane stickpack machine 

running at 24,000 sticks per hour, 

with two independent hoppers able

introduction of shear using 

the specifically designed and 

geometrically optimised slotted 

rotor/stator system. 

Its Ytron-Z can be fitted with a 

single, double or triple rotor/stator 

set each consisting of a pair of 

triple row shear tooling. With the 

parameters of slot width, number 

and distance of shear slots, number 

of rotor/stator sets, rotational speed 

and flowrate, the desired shear 

effect can be reliably adjusted for 

all types of cultured milk products 

from low-fat yogurt to fromage 

frais. 

The advantages that the Ytron-Z 

offers include:

base can be reduced by 0.2% 

• The end result is a full-bodied 

product with a rich, smooth 

mouthfeel. 

One previous method used to 

smooth yogurt was to stir the 

product in the incubation tanks 

once the correct pH had been 

achieved. However, this could have 

an effect on the shear sensitive 

gel resulting in a reduction in the 

viscosity. Also, this method does 

not solve the problem of a ‘gritty’ 

product. Stirring also causes air 

to be drawn in which, in turn, 

can cause ‘off-flavours’. 

Other methods used include 

‘smoothing’ or ‘structurising’ 

valves. The grittiness of the product 

is reduced with this method. 

However, a negative side effect is 

a significant loss of viscosity due 

to pressure fluctuations towards 

the end of the process with some 

of the grits or nodules passing 

through the valve and ending 

up in the final product. 

In-line sieves or strainers are 

one of the other ways used to 

process dairy products. These give 

an acceptable result but product 

is retained in the filter resulting 

in a loss of viscosity. 

At the same time, Ytron-Y units 

are used in the dairy sector for a 

number of applications including 

the homogeneous mixing, without 

aeration, of fresh milk in bulk 

road tankers or milk silos, within 

a few minutes. Silos containing 

150,000 litres of yogurt base, quark 

milk and milk protein concentrate 

or similar products can be 

homogeneously mixed in a short 

time with only a single Ytron-Y, 

at an angle of 45deg, at the bottom 

of the cylindrical section of the 

vessel, explains Dudley Bradley 

of Ytron-Quadro.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 or PUWER has been around for nearly ten 

years which is why machinery end-users think they have compliance covered. However, many do not… 

Machinery safety is 

much broader than 

compliance with the 

Machinery Directive. The 

Work Equipment Directive, 

which is implemented in the 

UK by PUWER, is one such 

consideration. 

You may be thinking: ‘not 

that old chestnut again’, but 

while many machinery endusers 

may think that they 

have PUWER compliance 

covered, we continue to see 

common hazards and issues 

that have not been adequately 

addressed in the production 

environment. 

In our experience, many 

machinery owners assume 

that if their equipment has 

the CE marking that no further 

action is required. However, 

PUWER applies to all work 

equipment regardless of its 

age, including equipment that 

carries the CE marking. While 

meeting the requirements of 

PUWER can be complex, if a 

logical and realistic approach 

is adopted it doesn’t have to be 

impossible.

The Provision and Use of 

Work Equipment Regulations 

1998 (PUWER) requires users 

of work equipment to carry 

out risk assessment and 

provide work equipment that 

is suitable for its intended 

task, and which can be used 

without putting persons 

at risk. As an overview, it 

requires that inspections are 

carried out: 

• After installation and before 

being put into service for the 

first time; or after assembly 

at a new site or in a new 

location to ensure that it 

has been installed correctly 

and is safe to operate. 

• After work equipment 

has been exposed to 

any conditions causing 

deterioration, which is 

liable to cause a dangerous 

situation. 

• At suitable intervals; and 

• Each time that exceptional 

circumstances have 

occurred that are liable 

to jeopardise the safety of 

work equipment. The results 

of these inspections have to 

be documented and kept. 

Unlike CE marking, PUWER 

assessment is an ongoing 

process, and must be repeated 

at appropriate intervals. 

It must therefore always refer 

to the latest standards and 

not, for example, to the 

standards that may have 

been applicable when a 

machine was first brought 

into service. At this point it 

is worth highlighting that 

any substantial changes 

to machinery, such as 

upgrades, or interlinking 

with other equipment as part 

of an assembly, may make 

the existing CE Marking 

Declaration of Conformity 

invalid. This could 

necessitate a new conformity 

assessment. 

Conversely, PUWER also 

requires machine users to 

ensure that the CE marking 

process has been properly 

carried out. Regulation 10 

of PUWER: “Conformity 

with European Community 

Requirements”, requires that 

an employer must ensure 

that any equipment subject 

to European Directives 

complies with all applicable 

Essential Health and Safety 

Requirements of the Directives 

that apply to it. 

Risk assessments are 

therefore an essential 

ingredient to ensure that 

all machinery meets the

lengthy tomes, for example

been carried out with due 

diligence, as well as generate 

a list of any outstanding 

action points. 

While machinery safety is a 

complex process, the guidance 

that is widely available means 

that there is no excuse for 

getting PUWER wrong. If in 

doubt, seek expert advice as 

the safety of your employees 

and the reputation of your 

business may depend upon it.
