COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Antimicrobial Stewardship Week
Caroline Cruz is set up in the cafeteria at Marble Falls Hospital this week to talk to
patients and providers about the appropriate use of antibiotics, the risks of over-use
and inappropriate use of antibiotics as well as our upcoming stewardship efforts. We
also used this time to distribute the Dorsata app flyer to providers as well.
Students (L) Zachary Lawrence, University of Louisiana Monroe, and (R) Andrew Tran,
University of Texas man an information table at Round Rock Hospital for Antimicrobial
Stewardship week.
For the third year in a row Grapevine pharmacy team members volunteered in
Operation Christmas Child. Andrea led the way by collecting the pharmacy box items
and working with Shirin to color and paint the boxes. Donna coordinated the
volunteering appointment dates while Grace, Claire, Donna, Andrea, Lauren & Teena
volunteered on the assembly line at the shipping warehouse. Great team effort for a
worthy cause!
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In July Berni Patterson joined many other pharmacists in the Austin Area to work at the
Volunteer Health Clinic in Austin. She was partnered with Olivia, a technician from CVS,
and Catherine, a UT Biology student who would like to attend pharmacy school. That
evening they saw 25 patients – mostly allergy-related visits, a few infections and a few
refills on their maintenance meds for diabetes and hypertension. All agreed that it was a
fun night serving the Austin community and meeting other volunteer minded people!
Andrea Keyes, who is a BSWH - Grapevine pharmacist pictured right in green scrubs
providing medication education/review to patients at the Grapevine REC on Tuesday,
9/20/16 during the Falls Prevention Fair.
Great job Andrea for supporting and making the community outreach a success!
CareFlite, Baylor Plano HERT, and the City of Plano’s Department of Emergency
Management held an event in hour of National Preparedness Month at Baylor Scott &
White Medical Center at Plano last week. When the Plano Bomb Squad asked for a
volunteer to try on their Kevlar suite the director of pharmacy, Alina Buono, didn’t
hesitate at the opportunity!
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Baylor Scott & White Health and McLane’s Children’s Hospital received recognition as
Big Red Community Partner from the Belton ISD Board for their work with the BISD
students that they host every spring!
BSW Residents Peterson Monestime, Tram Tran, and Rolake Kuye collaborated with
First Presbyterian Church of Dallas to conduct a medical mission trip to Haiti January
7 th –January 14 th . The trip was a truly unforgettable experience as they were able to
collaborate with health professionals from various disciplines to provide healthcare to
1165 patients in the city of Ft. Liberte and two rural villages. In addition, the residents
assisted with mentorship of high school students, and food distributions to needy
families. The mission trip was a success, and instilled the importance of participating
in healthcare outreach programs not only in the community, but globally.
