Our Approach
Bunzl CHS has been focusing on
sustainability for over 10 years.
Our journey as a sustainable supplier first began
in 2005, and was validated with the achievement
of ISO 14001 in January 2006.
From this, Bunzl CHS looked at waste, water,
electricity, carbon footprint, product sourcing and
finally, became Gold members of the FM Supply
Chain Sustainability School in 2015.

Recycling Waste
At Bunzl CHS, we have been constantly
reviewing the impact of our waste sent
to landfill.
In 2006 we invested in bailers at most of our
branches, to compact the cardboard and plastic
waste which is now diverted to be recycled.
We then focused on our paper usage which
included a reduction in paper consumption
through print, reusing where possible and
recycling.
We are currently working with major UK paper
towel manufacturers to recycle our customers’
waste paper back into the supply chain.
The recycled paper is reprocessed and recycled
into hand towel products that we sell back to our
customers.

Saving Water
Whilst our water usage is only used for
refreshment and sanitary use, Bunzl CHS
is always looking for ways to use water
more effectively.
All new and refurbished facilities are fitted
with dual flush toilets and older sites are
fitted with Cistermiser and Hippo Bricks.
Vehicle washing at our sites is prohibited
and from 2016, we have monitored our water
consumption on a monthly basis, enabling
us to analyse our usage between sites and
spot any leaks.

ISO 14001
Bunzl CHS has held IS0 14001
Environmental Management System since
2006 which is approved by NQA, a UKAS
accredited company.
We actively train our staff to understand
their impact on the environment and
implement positive changes.
We encourage employees to review
their work activities and identify
small changes that can result
in a meaningful reduction
in our overall
environmental impact.
We are constantly
striving to improve
year on year and have
recently been awarded
ISO 9001 and
OHSAS 18001.

Renewable
Electricity
Since 2012 Bunzl CHS has sourced
electricity from 100% renewable tariffs.
Currently over 85% of the electricity used
by Bunzl CHS is from 100% renewable
tariffs. By the end of 2017, Bunzl CHS aim
to have all electricity from this source.

In the table below, Bunzl CHS exceeded

In the remaining areas, we narrowly missed
hitting our targets, which nevertheless helped
us publish very positive results overall.

Carbon Footprint
From January 2013, Bunzl CHS became the
first cleaning and hygiene product supplier
to publish their monthly CO 2 footprint per
delivery figures.
Using the conversion data set out by Defra, we
have been able to accurately calculate our Scope
1 and Scope 2 figures ensuring that Scope 3
data can be calculated for our customers.
• Jan 13 = 7.82 kg of CO 2 per delivery
• Jan 16 = 5.75 kg of CO 2 per delivery

New Technology
In December 2011 Bunzl CHS fitted all
commercial vehicles with an on board
telematics system called GreenRoad.
From 2011-2015 GreenRoad produced a
reduction in road traffic accidents, wear & tear
and a 19% reduction of fuel per £1M turnover.
In 2016, we introduced a route planning and
fleet management system called Telogis which
further reduced our diesel consumption whilst
enhancing our customer delivery expectations.

Sustainability
School
In 2015 Bunzl CHS became a
member of the FM Supply Chain
Sustainability School.
We have now proudly attained Gold
member status, recently achieving a
self-assessment score of 4.09 out of 5
(School average is 2.25).
Joining the school has enabled us to
fine tune our environmental offering
and share best practice with other
School members.

Sustainable
Products
As a sustainable supplier, Bunzl CHS is
committed to providing and promoting
sustainable products to our customers.
Our suppliers recognise this too.
We stock a number of products within our range
that are chemical free such as InnuScience,
EcoLab and Diversey SURE range which use
plant based enzymes instead of chemicals.
We also stock paper products that are
compressed in the box during manufacturing -
meaning that 20% extra product is contained
within each box.
In addition, more products than ever in our
range hold environmental credentials such as
Nordic Swan, EU Ecolabel and FSC.

Target Setting
Bunzl CHS has set annual targets for
the past 8 years to reduce its impact
on the environment.
For 2016/2017, we are targeting a 2% net
reduction on diesel and energy consumption.
Therefore, if our business expanded by 5%, we
would be looking at a 3% reduction in diesel and
energy (2% target reduction and 5% growth).
These targets are agreed at Board level
and performance against these targets are
constantly reviewed by senior management.
We are also monitored by Bunzl plc to ensure
our group obligations are met.

The Future
Bunzl CHS is not stopping.
As mentioned earlier, we are continually
looking at innovative ways to reduce our
impact on the environment.
We are currently working on two key
environmental projects:
Lighting – We are currently switching a
significant amount of our lighting from high
wattage lights to low wattage LED lights. This
could see a reduction in our consumption of
electricity for lighting by over 60%.
Waste – We are committed to reducing
our waste to landfill and feel that we
can do more in this area.
We not only review what we
do in terms of waste and
recycling at each of our
business locations, but
also actively challenge
our supply chain to
reduce their packaging
and waste.
