Subsidiary Courses<br />

In both the Bachelor <strong>an</strong>d Master study programs, a subsidiary study course has to be chosen<br />

from: business administration, biology, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics. Other<br />

study courses, if offered at <strong>RWTH</strong> Aachen University, may be chosen upon approval by the<br />

examination committee.<br />

Post-Graduate Studies<br />

These correspond to the main research directions in the computer science department. Possible<br />

topics are amongst others: parallel algorithms, programming l<strong>an</strong>guages, software techniques,<br />

data communication <strong>an</strong>d distributed systems, databases <strong>an</strong>d information systems,<br />

knowledge-representations <strong>an</strong>d cognitive robotics, sample- <strong>an</strong>d l<strong>an</strong>guage detection, as well<br />

as computer graphics <strong>an</strong>d high perform<strong>an</strong>ce computing.<br />

Subject-Related Specialty<br />

One specialty of studying computer science at the <strong>RWTH</strong> Aachen is the multifaceted cooperation<br />

between the computer science especially with the engineering science <strong>an</strong>d the regional<br />

computer science industry, which makes professional experiences possible to the students<br />

early within their studies.<br />

Professional Areas<br />

Computer Scientists may find employment in m<strong>an</strong>y different professional areas which all<br />

bear upon information technology. For example chip producers, telecommunication comp<strong>an</strong>ies,<br />

software comp<strong>an</strong>ies, consulting firms, <strong>an</strong>d users of administration systems (b<strong>an</strong>ks,<br />

insur<strong>an</strong>ces, public service etc.) or automation technology (producing industry, automotive<br />

<strong>an</strong>d airpl<strong>an</strong>e industry). Because of the increasing use of computer systems in all areas,<br />

presently the career opportunities of computer science graduates are excellent!<br />
