Master Programm of <strong>RWTH</strong> Aachen University<br />

Goals of the Programme<br />

Whilst a Bachelor degree in Computer Science typically qualifies a person to participate in<br />

large software projects, the Master degree provides the skills needed for lea<strong>der</strong>ship. Graduates<br />

of the programme Media Informatics c<strong>an</strong> be expected to be technically innovative, to<br />

work as system architects, <strong>an</strong>d to m<strong>an</strong>age large projects. Students who excel during their<br />

Master’s programme will also have the necessary qualifications to pursue a doctoral degree.<br />

Formal Entr<strong>an</strong>ce Requirements<br />

A c<strong>an</strong>didate should have a recognised first degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in<br />

Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or other closely related discipline,<br />

awarded by <strong>an</strong> internationally recognised university-level institution. C<strong>an</strong>didates should<br />

have also performed above average in their un<strong>der</strong>graduate studies. The Graduate Record<br />

Examination (GRE) is also strongly recommended. For English-taught programmes c<strong>an</strong>didates<br />

must be able to speak <strong>an</strong>d write fluently in English (TOEFL 550 paper-based /213<br />

computer-based or IELTS 6.0). English-speaking students attend a basic Germ<strong>an</strong> l<strong>an</strong>guage<br />

course that will start in August, two months prior to the beginning of the master programme.<br />

Special Entr<strong>an</strong>ce Requirements<br />

The c<strong>an</strong>didate should have a subst<strong>an</strong>tial background in computer science <strong>an</strong>d mathematics.<br />

Typically this would include previously taken courses in the following areas: Calculus,<br />

Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics <strong>an</strong>d Logic, Numerics, Probability Theory, Fundamentals<br />

of Computer Programming, Computer Architecture, Data Structures, Analysis of<br />

Algorithms, Programming L<strong>an</strong>guages, Automata Theory, Computability <strong>an</strong>d Complexity<br />

Theory. In addition, <strong>an</strong> applic<strong>an</strong>t should have at least two adv<strong>an</strong>ced un<strong>der</strong>graduate courses<br />

on specialised topics such as Distributed Systems, Information Systems, Operating Systems<br />

or Multimedia Techniques.<br />
