wealth <strong>of</strong> material brought to lit^lU <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> excavations conducted <strong>by</strong> M. Ernest de<br />

Sarzec at <strong>Telloh</strong> in Ba<strong>by</strong>lonia, since 1878, is a boon to ever>- student <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient East.<br />

<strong>The</strong> artistic grace, <strong>the</strong> diverse methods <strong>of</strong> writing, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>great</strong> varict\-, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se 'finds'<br />

m.ike <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> first importance in any study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most ancient periods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><br />

lower Bab}-lonia. <strong>The</strong> unstinted liberality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> French Government in promoting <strong>the</strong>se<br />

excavations at <strong>Telloh</strong>, <strong>and</strong> its praiseworth_\- care in preserving <strong>and</strong> exhibiting in <strong>the</strong> Louvre<br />

<strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se treasure-finds, cannot be too highly commended.<br />

A goodly number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>inscriptions</strong> contained in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Telloh</strong> exhibits have been<br />

jniblished in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>some work edited b}- Ernest de Sarzec <strong>and</strong> Leon Heuzey since 1884.'-'<br />

<strong>The</strong>se splendid reproductions, b}' an almost inimitable French art, have almost precluded<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessity <strong>of</strong> consulting <strong>the</strong> <strong>original</strong> statues, tablets, <strong>and</strong> stela;.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>great</strong> Cylinders A <strong>and</strong> B are <strong>the</strong> most notable <strong>inscriptions</strong> in this publication.<br />

Double plates 33 <strong>and</strong> 34, issued in 1S84, present Cylinder A executed <strong>by</strong> a heliograph<br />

process. In 1887, this same Cylinder A was issued again on double plate 35, presenting six<br />

views, covering <strong>the</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>, as <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a direct photographic process. In 1889, Cylinder<br />

B was issued on double plate 36 in six views <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> same process. <strong>The</strong>se beautiful<br />

reproductions on double plates 35 <strong>and</strong> 36 are, however, reductions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>original</strong>s <strong>by</strong> more<br />

than one-half <strong>The</strong>se reductions, toge<strong>the</strong>r with an occasional abrasion, <strong>and</strong> several portions<br />

almost hidden b\' calcareous deposits, present practical difficulties in deciphering all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

signs <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> c\dinders. <strong>The</strong> only o<strong>the</strong>r attempt to present <strong>the</strong> <strong>inscriptions</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se <strong>cylinder</strong>s, was in <strong>the</strong> publication, in <strong>the</strong> Revue d^\ss\Tiologie,*-- <strong>of</strong> Amiaud's copy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cylinder B <strong>from</strong> among his posthumous manuscripts. This copy, in so far as Amiaud<br />

was able to make identifications, is a transliteration into <strong>the</strong> late Assyrian character, while<br />

unidentified signs are a transcript <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>original</strong>. Several long omissions in this copy, due<br />

doubtless to <strong>the</strong> fact that it was made for private use only, rendered it quite desirable<br />

that as complete a transcript as possible <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>great</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>s be made accessible to<br />

scholars. <strong>The</strong>refore, at <strong>the</strong> suggestion <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Friedrich Delitzsch, <strong>the</strong> author went to<br />

Paris, in <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> 1898, to undertake <strong>the</strong> work.<br />

By <strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> M. Leon Heuzey, Coiiservateiir dcs Antiquitcs orieiitalcs in <strong>the</strong><br />

Louvre, ready access was granted to <strong>the</strong> valuable documents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Telloh</strong> collection, <strong>and</strong><br />

permission given to copy <strong>the</strong> <strong>great</strong> CyHnders A <strong>and</strong> B <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gudea</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> difficulties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work at <strong>the</strong> beginning were tw<strong>of</strong>old: (i) A lack <strong>of</strong> large<br />

experience in copying <strong>inscriptions</strong> directly <strong>from</strong> <strong>clay</strong> <strong>original</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> (2) <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> reading<br />

had to be done through <strong>the</strong> plate-glass <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case that contained <strong>the</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>s (see <strong>the</strong><br />

Diconvertes c-n Chahlie. Par Ernest de Sarzec, |iublie [lar les soins de Leon Heuzey. Paris, 1884<br />

<strong>Vol</strong>s. II. pp. 124—135; III. pp. 42 — 4S.

IV<br />

picture, on p. VI. taken b}- <strong>the</strong> author while in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> his work. Cylinder A is<br />

on <strong>the</strong> left, <strong>and</strong> Cylinder B occupies <strong>the</strong> right end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case). <strong>The</strong> first difficult}', during<br />

more than forty days, or 200 hours, <strong>of</strong> close work, gradually wore awa\-. But <strong>the</strong> second<br />

was a continual menace to <strong>the</strong> eyes, especially when obliged to use a magnifying glass,<br />

requiring at <strong>the</strong> same time an especial effort to overcome <strong>the</strong> glare caused <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> two surfaces<br />

<strong>of</strong> glass.<br />

Cylinder A is a hollow <strong>clay</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>. 61 centimeters in length <strong>and</strong> ^2 cent, in diameter,<br />

<strong>the</strong> rim <strong>of</strong> <strong>clay</strong> being about two cent, thick. Although this <strong>cylinder</strong> had been<br />

broken into pieces, <strong>the</strong>se pieces have been ga<strong>the</strong>red up <strong>and</strong> nicely adjusted, with <strong>the</strong> loss<br />

<strong>of</strong> but a few fragments. <strong>The</strong> surface is quite well preserved, aside <strong>from</strong> a few places unfortunately<br />

rubbed, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs covered with a semi-transparent hard deposit. <strong>The</strong>se places were<br />

read, where read at all, only with difficulty.' Some assistance was secured <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

a mirror, casting upon <strong>the</strong> doubtful portion a strong ray <strong>of</strong> sunlight, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n magnifying<br />

such special place. Cylinder A carries thirty columns, averaging about eighty lines (not<br />

cases) to <strong>the</strong> column. <strong>The</strong> first-half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscription is more compactly <strong>and</strong> solidly written<br />

than <strong>the</strong> latter part; <strong>the</strong> scribe apparently discovered that he was not obliged to crowd his<br />

matter to find room for all <strong>of</strong> it on <strong>the</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reafter wrote more loosely.<br />

Cylinder B is also a hollow cla\- <strong>cylinder</strong>, 56 cent, in length, <strong>and</strong> 33 cent, in diameter,<br />

<strong>the</strong> rim <strong>of</strong> <strong>clay</strong> being about two cent, thick. It contained <strong>original</strong>ly twenty-four<br />

columns, averaging about sixty lines to <strong>the</strong> column. With a less number <strong>of</strong> columns <strong>and</strong> a<br />

le.ss number <strong>of</strong> lines to <strong>the</strong> column, <strong>and</strong> a slightly larger diameter than Cylinder A, <strong>the</strong> signcharacters<br />

are larger <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole inscription is more loosely written than Cylinder A.<br />

This <strong>cylinder</strong> also had been broken into pieces, but has been carefully readjusted. Unfortunately<br />

nearly all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last quarter <strong>of</strong> it is lost, toge<strong>the</strong>r with small pieces here <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

in <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscription. A few portions, too, have been damaged <strong>by</strong> a hard deposit,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> signs is more <strong>of</strong> an aid to <strong>the</strong> decipherer than those on Cylinder A.<br />

Cylinders A <strong>and</strong> B toge<strong>the</strong>r, in <strong>the</strong>ir present form, carry more than 10,600 characters,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, as will be seen <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sign-List (pp. 89 — 11 1), more than 325 different signs, — many<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m peculiar to <strong>the</strong>se c_\-linders.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> revision <strong>of</strong> his first readings <strong>the</strong> author had <strong>the</strong> valuable assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

e.xpert Assyriologist <strong>and</strong> attache <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Louvre, M. Frangois Thureau-Dangin. His skilled eye<br />

rendered especial aid in <strong>the</strong> reading <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier parts <strong>of</strong> cols. X, XI, <strong>and</strong> XII <strong>of</strong> C}'linder<br />

A, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> damaged <strong>and</strong> partially deposit-covered portions <strong>of</strong> cols. IV <strong>and</strong> \'II <strong>of</strong><br />

Cylinder B, as well as in <strong>the</strong> depiction here <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>of</strong> individual signs.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> autographic work, <strong>the</strong> author has endeavored to transmit to paper as nearly<br />

as possible, both <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> column <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sign, contained on <strong>the</strong> <strong>original</strong><br />

<strong>clay</strong>, — even to some apparent mistakes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scribe, for example, in Cylinder A,<br />

IV, 9, /(?;-, in 12, ;/, etc. <strong>The</strong> variations in <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> wedges in many signs reveal <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that considerable liberty was allowed in <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> characters (see Sign-List<br />

for variations). <strong>The</strong> author's reproduction <strong>of</strong> na in Cylinder A should have, at <strong>the</strong> right<br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horizontal line, as it has in Cylinder B, but one instead tivo wedge-heads.<br />

<strong>The</strong> author, too, has labored under <strong>the</strong> disadvantage <strong>of</strong> being absent <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>original</strong>s in his autographic work. This may result, on fur<strong>the</strong>r investigation, in discovering<br />

some erroneous readings. But he ventures to hope that <strong>the</strong>se may be so few as not to invalidate<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>great</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>inscriptions</strong>.<br />

Several questions <strong>of</strong> vital importance in cuneiform research have been suggested<br />

in connection with <strong>the</strong> stnd\- <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r (nulean <strong>inscriptions</strong>: (I) <strong>The</strong> direction <strong>of</strong>

V<br />

writing <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> reading <strong>the</strong>se earl)' <strong>inscriptions</strong>, is a question that finds no adequate solution<br />

in <strong>the</strong> writings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>cylinder</strong>s. May it not have been that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>cylinder</strong>s were supported<br />

on some kind <strong>of</strong> a horizontal axis <strong>and</strong> turned on this axis before <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reader,<br />

to be read in <strong>the</strong> same position as were <strong>the</strong> <strong>inscriptions</strong> on <strong>the</strong> statues <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gudea</strong>, <strong>from</strong> above<br />

downwards <strong>and</strong> proceeiling <strong>from</strong> right to left.^ — (2) <strong>The</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cuneiform writing receives<br />

for its solution slight aid <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>cylinder</strong>s, because <strong>of</strong> a probable wide departure <strong>from</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>original</strong> forms in <strong>the</strong> adoption <strong>and</strong> liberal use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wedge-head.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hte'rature on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gudea</strong>n <strong>inscriptions</strong> will receive attention in <strong>the</strong> Introtluclion<br />

to Part II, which <strong>the</strong> author hopes to have in press in <strong>the</strong> autumn.<br />

<strong>The</strong> author's most grateful thanks are here<strong>by</strong> expressed to M. LiJon Hcuzey,<br />

Coitscii'iitciir in <strong>the</strong> Louvre, for his gracious courtesy in granting his kind permission both<br />

to copy, <strong>and</strong> to publish <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> his investigations on, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>cylinder</strong>s. lie is also under<br />

<strong>great</strong> obligations to M. Thureau-Dangin for his kindly pr<strong>of</strong>fered <strong>and</strong> accepted assistance, both<br />

in revising his readings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>cylinder</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pro<strong>of</strong>-sheets <strong>of</strong> his important<br />

<strong>and</strong> recently issued work, Rccherelics siir I'Origine dc [ Ecriture Cuneiforinc. His thanks are<br />

also due to many o<strong>the</strong>r members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Louvre for <strong>the</strong>ir uniform<br />

courtesy <strong>and</strong> kindness.<br />

<strong>The</strong> author also acknowledges with gratitude <strong>the</strong> kind counsels <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Friedrich<br />

Delitzsch in <strong>the</strong> prosecution <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> work.<br />

He is no less obligated to <strong>the</strong> publishers for <strong>the</strong>ir generosity in assuming <strong>the</strong> responsibilit}"<br />

<strong>of</strong> putting before <strong>the</strong> public, in such an attractive form, <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> his work.<br />
