A Powerful Workshop on
Harnessing the Power of Psychological Contracts in the Workplace
DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PSYCHOLOGICAL
CONTRACT WITH YOUR STAFF?
The Psychology of Business Series
The psychological contract is the unspoken way of communicating and relating
to one another based on perceived mutual obligations. This informal contract is
far more crucial to the stability and health of working relationships than any
formal written contract or job description.
The power of this psychological bond is misunderstood in today’s organisation
as are its insidious ability to influence strategically important relationships such
as those between the CEO and Directors, CEO and the Board, CEO and
Chairman, senior and middle management, Middle management and staff, staff
and the top Management team, etc. In fact, from our experience, most
organisations are not even aware of this tacit bond and therefore not aware of its
potentially ongoing subversive impact in the organisation.
A weakness in this tacit bond causes mistrust and apprehension within
relationships and deters organisational progress, improvement, productivity, and
positive change. People begin to distrust the motives of others and view
organisational change and progress, for example, as detrimental to personal and
professional stability regardless of the assurances from leaders. Not surprisingly
many employees’ “fake” commitment to get along and keep their position safe.
Eventually, this tactic undermines personal motivation in the job and leads to
loss of focus, lack of productivity, negative behaviours, conflict and in some
cases, bullying. The undermining of organisational goals and deteriorating
interpersonal relationships is a common outcome. A vicious cycle that requires a
precise solution. It is effectively, the “hidden” organisational culture.
