2017 has been designated as Wales ‘Year of Legends’. 

Where better to have a legendary holiday than here 

in Pembrokeshire, described as the ‘Land of Magic 

and Enchantment’ in the Mabinogion, a collection of 

ancient Celtic folk tales. It’s not all about the stunning 

coastline, outstanding wildlife, incredible castles and 

fascinating history. Pembrokeshire hospitality is also 

legendary and so are the range of places to stay and 

things to do. 

Whatever style of break you’re looking for you can find 

them here, from luxury spa hotels to idyllic beach-side 

campsites, from family-friendly holiday villages with 

everything you need at hand to isolated 

character cottages. 

If you still need some more inspiration then check out 

Google Street View. At some point in 2017 the entire 

Pembrokeshire Coast Path is going to be added to it. 

You will be able to walk the entire 186 mile trail from 

your armchair and pick which bits you’re actually 

going to walk.

1. WALK THIS WAY 

Go for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing ramble with our network of 

paths. Top trails include family-friendly routes at Bosherston Lily 

Ponds, and dramatic clifftop walks around St David’s Head. 

2. HANDS-ON HISTORY 

See what life was like in the 1500s at the Tudor Merchant’s House, 

the oldest unspoilt house in Tenby. Or time travel further and 

uncover Iron Age forts along the Solva Coast; they’ve been a part of 

the landscape for more than 2,000 years. 

3. WILDLIFE WATCHING 

Binoculars at the ready; come and meet the locals. Spot otters at 

Stackpole, seals and their pups off the Marloes Peninsula and 

brilliant bird life, from puffins to peregrines. 

4. COAST WITH THE MOST 

Make waves at one of our sandy stretches, Barafundle Bay’s forever 

winning awards whilst nearby Freshwater West is a seaside star and 

superb for surfing. Have a go at kayaking or coasteering from 

Stackpole Quay, get rockpooling at Marloes Sands and uncover 

adventure at Abereiddy and its Blue Lagoon. 

5. FLOWER POWER 

For a real riot of colour visit Colby Woodland Garden, admire 

carpets of bluebells and daffodils followed by swathes of 

camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons. The coastal heathland is 

pretty impressive too; see shades of purple and gold paint the 

landscape around St David’s and Strumble Head. 

6. PLACES TO STAY 

Of course, when you’re done for the day, you can sleep easy at one 

of our holiday cottages. Take your pick from rural retreats and 

accommodation with waterfront views – Castell Farmhouse is great 

for families whilst rustic Treleddyd Fawr Cottage is perfect for a

Encounters with the large selection 

of wildlife that have long made 

Pembrokeshire their home are plentiful 

thanks to nutrient-rich waters and a 

varied landscape. Sightings of resident 

and visiting birds can be enjoyed 

throughout the year, with highlights 

including Puffins, Gannets, Guillemots, 

Razorbills and Manx Shearwaters, while 

a boat trip is a wonderful way to catch a 

glimpse of grey seals, basking sharks, 

dolphins, porpoises and even whales.

TIMES CHANGE BUT 

ENDURE 

The past is ever present throughout Pembrokeshire. Its Prehistoric heritage 

lives on at sites such as the Neolithic Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber and the Iron 

Age Hill Fort of Castell Henllys. A land of legendary castles, you can take your 

pick from Pembroke (birthplace of Henry VII), Picton, Carew, Manorbier, the 

remains of Tenby Castle, and the Landsker Line, a string of smaller castles 

between Amroth and Roch. The WW2 Carew Airfield Control Tower provides 

an atmospheric opportunity to immerse yourself in more recent history.

Pembrokeshire is shaped by a 

rich and varied history. The 

spectacular Preseli Hills are 

known to have provided around 

80 spotted dolerite ‘bluestones’ 

for the second phase of 

Stonehenge’s construction in 

3,000BC, while the Golden Road 

Carew Castle 

follows a track that is thought to 

date back 5,000 years to the 

Neolithic period and provided 

the main trade route between 

Britain and Ireland.

Henry VII 

Henry Tudor established the Tudor Dynasty 

when he overthrew the unpopular Richard 

III at the battle of Bosworth. He was born at 

Pembroke Castle in 1457 but spent much of 

his youth in exile in Brittany. Henry returned 

with an army, landing on the 7th of August 

1485 at Mill Bay near Dale before marching to 

Haverfordwest and on to Aberystwyth, 

Machynlleth and eventually to Market 

Bosworth where the battle took place.

to explore on two wheels. The Pembrokeshire 

Trail, the southern section of the Lôn Teifi Trail 

and the 143-mile Pembrokeshire stretch of the 

Celtic Cycle Trail, as well as numerous

01 Oakwood is Wales’ only theme park with some 

world-class white-knuckle rides, but has plenty to 

amuse younger children too. The popular ‘After Dark’ 

evening openings throughout August will also be 

returning for 2017.

02 The award-winning Folly Farm is more than 

just a farm. It’s a zoo, a vintage fun-fair, an adventure 

playground and it’s open all year. 50% is under cover 

too. Two rare black Rhinos have recently joined the star 

attractions of Lions, Giraffes and Penguins. 

03 The Blue Lagoon is a brilliant indoor water park with a 

wave machine, flume rides and a lazy river. Regular ‘After 

Dark’ evening sessions are great fun when all the waves, 

cannons and jets are on full power! Next door is The 

Adventure Centre, a giant countryside-themed indoor 

adventure play centre and indoor high ropes course.

04 Anna Ryder-Richardson’s Manor House Wildlife Park 

is a zoo with a difference with walk-through enclosures 

where you can get up close to the animals. Now open all 

year round. Rhinos Zambo and Jambo have now been 

joined by new star attraction, Sumatran Tigress Terima. 

05 For a Monster day out, go to the Dinosaur Park 

near Tenby. As well as the Dinosaur trail, there are loads 

of rides and activities included in the admission price 

including an indoor adventure playground, digging for 

fossils and a giant bubble ride.

06 Heatherton Activity Theme Park has a choice of 

27 different activities to choose from including the 

daring Tree Tops Trail and the amazing Pirates of the 

Caribbean-themed adventure golf course.

07 The Dyfed Shire Horse Farm between Newport 

and Cardigan is a working farm with lots to see and 

do including horse-drawn cart rides, play areas, 

nature walks and demonstrations in the summer 

school holiday.

Henllys Iron Age Fort. Help build a wattle and daub 

wall, make bread, throw a spear and have your face 

painted like an Iron Age warrior! 

09 Pembroke Castle is great for exploring and letting 

off a bit of steam: tunnels, towers, battlements, and 

spiral staircases all over the place. There’s even a 

haunted underground cavern!

All the accommodation featured in this publication has been 

independently assessed so you can make your choice in 

confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given 

a rating according to the quality and facilities on offer. These 

ratings mean that you can be sure of standards and choose the 

accommodation that’s just right for you. 

Visit Wales/AA are the only checking agents in Wales, checking 

out over 5,000 places. 

WHAT DO OUR STAR RATINGS MEAN? 

Visit Wales STARS are evidence of quality. They range from one to 

five stars and are a reliable indication of the services and facilities 

you can expect in accommodation which includes hotels, guest 

houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type 

accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan 

holiday home and touring/camping parks. 

Alternative Accommodation such as yurts, tipis and tree houses are 

also checked to ensure that they meet minimum standards. 

Cleanliness is the most crucial element of any assessment and 

minimum standards, particularly at the higher star ratings reflect consumer 

expectations. 

All accommodation grades are based on a set of common quality 

standards agreed by Visit Wales, Visit England, Visit Scotland, 

Tourism Northern Ireland and the AA. 

DOES A LOWER STAR RATING 

EQUAL LESS QUALITY? 

Many lower star rated accommodations may still offer high quality 

but do not meet all of the facility and service expectations for the 

higher star ratings. Is it particularly important not to compare Guest 

Accommodation ratings against Hotel ratings as different criteria 

are used when assessing. The advice is to always check with an 

establishment before booking to check that the accommodation 

offers the services and facilities that meet your needs – they will 

only be too pleased to help. 

Also look out for that extra-special property that has 

been awarded Visit Wales’ Gold Award, given for 

exceptional standards of hospitality, comfort and food 

in serviced accommodation. 

Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit 

the accommodation prior to publication. In 

these instances, the property is marked as 

‘Awaiting Grading’.Some accommodation operators 

have chosen not to be star rated, but they have 

been checked out to ensure that they provide an 

acceptable level of services and facilities appropriate 

to their type of business. They are identified as 

either ‘Verified’ or ‘Listed’. 

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS 

Look out for the Visit Wales Quality marque. 

This only gets awarded to attractions that 

have been independently assessed against 

the national standards of the Visitor Attraction 

Quality Assurance Scheme to ensure that all 

areas important to your visit are of the best

All Visit Wales graded properties have an Access Statement. 

This statement tells visitors in a clear, accurate and honest 

way how the property can meet their particular needs. Three 

symbols have been introduced to help visitors with physical 

impairments find the Access Statements of most relevance to 

them. Accommodation providers have selected the one symbol 

which best describes the improvements that they have made to 

their properties.

Ramsey Island Voyage 

This is our most popular sailing, being suitable for 

all ages and abilities and affording a unique mix 

of wildlife, spectacular sea-caves and rock gorges. 

Sailing around the RSPB reserve, we navigate 

close inshore, stopping at various points to view 

the large colonies of Grey Seals, Seabirds and to 

watch Porpoise in Ramsey Sound. A fully guided 1 

hour wildlife voyage, a family favourite!

Islands Expedition 

Allowing a little more time to discover and explore the 

wildlife over a greater area, this voyage encompasses 

all the Caves, Rock Gorges, Birds, Seals and 

Porpoises of Ramsey and then if conditions allow 

we may head out a little further. We also visit Smoker 

Island depending on the time of year. Fully guided 2 

hour wildlife voyage. Adults £50, Child £22 

Offshore Islands Whale 

and Dolphin Watch 

We first sail to Grassholm Island, a spectacular sight, 

home to the fourth largest gannet colony in the world. 

We then head offshore on a sweep of distant waters in 

search of cetaceans. This voyage has provided excellent 

sightings of Dolphin, Porpoise, Risso’s Dolphin, 

Minke and even Fin Whale and Leatherback Turtle. 

Fully guided 2½ hour wildlife voyage.

Puffin & Shearwater Watch 

A one and a half hour evening voyage around Ramsey 

Island and then further out to the waters of the Bishops 

and Clerks. Viewing the colonies of Puffins, Seals and 

watching the tens of thousands of migrating Shearwaters 

as the sun sets. Fully guided 1½ hour wildlife voyage.

Traditional Style Voyage 

A more relaxed traditional style sailing. Using one of 

our fleet of modern purpose built vessels giving you a 

smoother more stable voyage and allowing for a more 

interactive and personalised tour. This trip offers superb 

opportunities for Bird, Seal and Porpoise watching 

and is suitable for all ages. Fully guided 1½ hour wildlife

Jet-Set Adventure 

We do not do pure white-water power-boating. We 

are capable it is just rather that we have a lot of 

respect for these waters and especially the wildlife 

and marine codes that we abide by. However we still 

have the opportunity to do what we call the Jet-set. 

A much higher proportion of speed, tight turns and 

exploring the rock gorges and phenomenal strong tides 

of Ramsey. Suitable for fit and able passengers. Fully 

guided 1 hour voyage. Adults £28, Child £15 

Fishing Trips 

One hour Mackerel trips, suitable for all ages. Fully
