Start-ups businesses are the lifeblood of<br />
the economy and a powerful engine of job<br />
creation and economic growth, particularly at<br />
regional level. Nurturing and supporting early<br />
stage High Potential Start-Ups (HPSUs) is a<br />
key priority for Enterprise Ireland.<br />
2016 was a great year for job<br />
creation by Enterprise Ireland<br />
backed companies, with collective<br />
employment breaking 200,000 for the<br />
first time. It was also a great year for<br />
Start-Ups.<br />
– 101 new High Potential Start up<br />
approvals (HPSUs)<br />
– 128 new Competitive Start Fund<br />
approvals (CSFs)<br />
A key focus for Enterprise Ireland<br />
over the past number of years has<br />
been on targeting under-represented<br />
sources of start-ups, particularly<br />
start-ups from third level research and<br />
start-ups led by ambitious women.<br />
2016 was an excellent year for female<br />
entrepreneurship:<br />
– 19 new HPSUs investment approvals<br />
led by women (19%)<br />
– 44 new CSF investment approvals in<br />
female-led businesses (34%)<br />
In total we approved 63 investments in<br />
female-led start-ups, or 28%. A great<br />
result considering only 8% of HPSUs<br />
were female led in 2012.<br />
2016 was also a record year for startups<br />
from third level research with 15<br />
spin-outs from third level institutes<br />
- the highest level ever achieved in a<br />
single year.<br />
An interesting and welcome<br />
achievement of 2016 was the number<br />
of new start-ups that emerged from<br />
the Fintech sector. During 2016 we<br />
invested in seven new Fintech HPSUs<br />
and a further 10 Fintech start-ups were<br />
supported under a dedicated CSF.<br />
We continue to work as part of the<br />
Government’s IFS 2020 Strategy to<br />
optimise on opportunities for Ireland<br />
in the Financial Services sector.<br />
Of the total number of start-ups<br />
supported during 2016, we were<br />
particularly pleased to see that over<br />
half (53%) were in regions outside<br />
of Dublin. The development of<br />
companies of scale throughout the<br />
country is a key priority for Enterprise<br />
Ireland and start-up success is central<br />
to the achievement of this.<br />
This impressive out-turn for 2016 is<br />
a testament to the entrepreneurs<br />
and founders that have taken a leap<br />
of faith to establish new businesses,<br />

and in the process, are creating<br />
employment in towns and villages all<br />
over Ireland. The Enterprise Ireland<br />
start-up team has helped to deliver<br />
this success, acting as a sounding<br />
board for entrepreneurs with new<br />
business ideas, providing sign-posting<br />
for concepts that might require further<br />
development, and of course, assisting<br />
with much needed funding to help get<br />
businesses started. We have worked<br />
with stakeholders across the startup<br />
eco-system, most notably our<br />
colleagues in Local Enterprise Offices,<br />
to provide entrepreneurship support.<br />
The British referendum decision to<br />
leave the European Union is an extra<br />
challenge for export focussed startups<br />
and early stage companies, as<br />
the UK is most often the first export<br />
market. Our plan is to support and<br />
inspire entrepreneurs and founders<br />
to have global ambition, to expand<br />
their reach into global markets beyond<br />
the UK. This is a key pillar of our new<br />
Enterprise Ireland strategy ‘Build<br />
Scale, Expand Reach’ <strong>2017</strong>-2020.<br />
We will lead a national drive to<br />
encourage and support more startups,<br />
working with partners and<br />
stakeholders across the enterprise<br />
support infrastructure, to help Irish<br />
early stage businesses to achieve<br />
scale in global markets. Innovation will<br />
be a key differentiator in achieving<br />
competitive advantage in global<br />
markets. We have many examples<br />
of Irish companies, competing and<br />
winning against global competition<br />
through innovation – companies<br />
like Voxpro, Vistamed and CoreHR<br />
all of which announced major job<br />
expansions in 2016. These are<br />
companies of scale that inspire global<br />
ambition for the Class of 2016 and<br />
the start-up community who seek to<br />
emulate their growth and success.<br />
We congratulate the ‘Class of 2016’ on<br />
your achievements to date and wish<br />
you every success in becoming the<br />
Irish business success stories of the<br />
