2017 COMBINED SECTIONS MEETING | SAN ANTONIO, TX
PROGRAMMING NOTES
Welcome to CSM 2017 and a year of expanded programming from
the Section on Women’s Health!
We are running three concurrent sessions at each time block for the
first time, allowing us to bring you information from a wide variety of
speakers. CSM is a showcase of thoughtful application of evidence
to clinical care, and we continue to collaborate with the 17 other
Sections and Academies for programming on abdominal and
pelvic health across all areas of physical therapy. We have 26
education sessions, 1 platform presentation session, 1 poster session,
and 1 pre-conference course featuring Peter O’Sullivan.
My six years as Director of Programming have been challenging and fun. The changes to CSM have improved the
experience for speakers and attendees:

CEUs are now awarded through an online system (stamping the program books at the end of each session
ended in 2012!).
Standardized scheduling for the conference includes an hour between all sessions. (Sessions previously were
not on a block schedule and had variable start times and length.)
WiFi is becoming standard at conference sites, and we now have an updated CSM app for Apple and
Android devices.
Session and conference feedback is completed 100 percent online.
There are more changes for 2017!
Speakers can upload their presentations online ahead of the conference or onsite in a dedicated speaker
room.
The large printed program book is GONE. There will an abbreviated schedule for each day of CSM.
No more closed sessions? In the event of a full room, APTA Meeting Services staff will direct conference
attendees to a dedicated room where the session will be broadcast.
This is my final CSM as the Director of Programming for the SOWH, and I am looking forward to seeing the direction
that incoming Director of Programming Carina Siracusa takes the conference! We’ve grown in the number of
proposals submitted each year, from 19 in 2012 to over 40 in 2016 and 2017. Thank you all for your dedication and
willingness to share your knowledge with the rest of us. The proposal submission site is open for CSM 2018!
Thanks for the opportunity to shape the conference over these six years! As always, thanks to my Programming
Committee for scoring the proposals and to Valerie Bobb for her dedication as Assistant CSM Chair. Thanks also to
Karen Miles of APTA Meeting Services for stellar logistical support and laughter.
2017 COMBINED SECTIONS MEETING | SAN ANTONIO, TX
LETTER FROM THE SECTION PRESIDENT
Welcome, Section on Women’s Health Members!
It’s 2017 and —the 40 th anniversary of SOWH! I am wicked excited
to welcome you to both San Antonio for CSM 2017 and to a
bigger-than-Texas year ahead as we celebrate our community’s
four decades of leadership and service.
Almost certainly the pioneering Elizabeth Noble couldn’t have
predicted the remarkable innovations and growth of our field
when she founded our Section in 1977. Please visit Our Website for
a special tribute to her vision and a look at our historical
achievements and growth. This includes everything from our
current all time high membership of 2,850 to past leaders to whom
we owe so much for holding board meetings at their kitchen
tables
First, a big thank you to Sandra Hilton, SOWH Director of
Programming, and the 65 presenters who are speaking at our 26
CSM sessions, 26 poster sessions, and six platforms. Taking time to
share cutting-edge research and thoughtful leadership on
emerging topics is a great service to our field. If you’d like to be
considered as a presenter next year, we welcome your proposals
by March 17, 2017 at 11:59 pm PDT.
We have never had such a big stage for discussions about
our unique niche within the Physical Therapy and health
care professions here and worldwide. In keeping with the
Section’s strategic goal of serving as an evidence-driven
global authority, I’m especially pleased that we have
speakers traveling here from Ireland, Nigeria, New Zealand,
and the United Kingdom to add their unique perspectives
and diversity to the richness of our learning experiences. Our
amazing pre-con speaker, renowned pain expert Dr. Peter
O’Sullivan, is traveling all the way from Australia to join us
here in San Antonio for our two day advanced preconference!!
(It’s not too late to register!)
Second, we have a remarkable year ahead in terms of
events, new products, and upgraded and new Section
services—all of them are for you, our members, as we honor
40 years of SOWH innovation and volunteerism. Our SoWH
40 th year celebration gala featuring Emma Stokes, President
of WCPT on Thursday, February 16, will be a centerpiece
event to our celebration. We have a packed house of 300
people registered, so please pick up your required wristband
at our Section Booth #1548 for quick entrance.
5
While you’re at the booth, get early access to anniversary logo-imprinted
products such as water bottles, bags, and phone chargers, and you can
register for one of our live education courses (It’s our 40 th year and we have
40 education courses scheduled) that set you on your way to prestigious
CAPP certification. Learn about our two just-released on-demand learning
modules by Julie Wiebe and Dan Gruber, and our new biweekly research
newsletter—Update SmartBrief—that launches in March. Come to the
SOWH Annual Business Meeting Friday at 6:30 pm at the Grand Hyatt to
honor our Section’s rock stars and meet the new editor-in-chief of our toprated
Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy. In addition, see firsthand
how your feedback on the 2016 Membership Survey and rebranding
work has prompted new member benefit investments, upgrades, and
technologies! Look for these to launch throughout 2017!
Top-most in our Section’s continuing evolution and in our conversations here at CSM, though, is the rollout of our new
mission, vision, and strategic plan. All return us to the core of why we were first named the Section of Obstetrics and
Gynecology.
Each of you should have received an email announcing our future direction, the six areas we’ll focus on for the next
three to five years, and the ways your input shaped those decisions. We have always been member-driven and we
always will be, so thank you for your feedback—we are listening!
This is especially true as the Name Change Task Force continues its work in light of the new mission and vision, so we
invite you to share comments that may help their work. As noted in the all-member email in mid-January, they hope
to have a recommendation to the membership and APTA this year. Send any comments to SOWH Vice President
Carrie Pagliano, vicepresident@womenshealthapta.org.
Again, a Texas-size welcome to all SOWH members coming here to CSM! We look forward to talking and celebrating
our 40th with you in person.
Happy anniversary to us all!
COMBINED SECTIONS MEETING | SAN ANTONIO, TX
2017-2020 DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING
Hello and welcome to an exciting CSM 2017!
I want to introduce myself as your newly elected Director of
Programming and to thank you again for your support. I am
extremely honored to be elected into this position, and I look forward
to serving the Section on Women’s Health in this position, especially
during our 40 th anniversary year.
Please let me take this opportunity to profusely thank outgoing SOWH
Director of Programming Sandy Hilton. She has truly elevated the level
of programming for the Section in her six years in this position and has
brought us some amazing speakers from around the globe. I can only
hope and pledge to continue the precedent she has set as we strive
to ensure the highest quality of evidence-based research and
discussion for you to take back with you from CSM.
For those of you who don’t know me, I have been working in the field
of pelvic health for the last eight years, having previously worked
primarily in pediatrics. I practice in Columbus, Ohio, for an outpatient
clinic for OhioHealth, where I also am the oncology program
coordinator. I have served the Section as CAPP-Pelvic Committee
chair and your friendly CAPP-Pelvic customer service representative. I
hope to continue to meet many of our members at this and future
Combined Section Meetings.
As we move forward in the coming years, I welcome your suggestions on topics and speakers that you would like to
see presented at future CSMs. Feel free to email me at programming@womenshealthapta.org with comments or
suggestions or to share your own connections with potential presenters. I look forward to working with you and all of
the members worldwide to continue our tradition of outstanding programming that benefits both you and your
patients!
Thank you,
2017 COMBINED SECTIONS MEETING | SAN ANTONIO, TX
SOWH SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
THURSDAY
FEBRUARY 16, 2017
The WCS: Strategies to Get You
to and Through the Exam
Presented by Peg Maas, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT, Mandi Murtaugh, PT,
DPT, WCS
The Women's Health Clinical Specialist (WCS) board certification
provides an opportunity for professional advancement through
recognition, increased knowledge through study, and leverage
in the job arena. However, the process of application and
preparation can be daunting, and guidance is not readily
available. This interactive session will encourage attendees to
take the WCS exam by providing information about its content,
suggesting strategies for preparation, and creating an
opportunity to make connections with other physical therapists
who can become study partners. The application process, an
introduction to the Description of Specialty Practice, and exam
preparation strategies will be covered. Through lecture and
small-group interaction, participants will come away with a clear
sense of their own strengths and how they can make this
challenge feasible.
Prostatectomy: Prehab, Rehab, and Hope
Presented by Sarah Haag, PT, DPT, WCS, Cert MDT, RYT
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed non-skin
cancer in the United States and the third leading cause of
cancer deaths. As a result of increased sensitivity of screening for
cancer, men are being diagnosed sooner, and 99% of men
diagnoses with prostate cancer will survive at least 5 years.
Unfortunately, the treatment for prostate cancer may leave men
incontinent and impotent. Pelvic floor physical therapists may be
well placed to help men improve continence and sexual
function, but what does the evidence say?
Stilettos, Spit-Up & Success: Mothers in
Leadership in the PT Profession
Presented by Karen Brandon, PT, DSc, WCS, Secili DeStefano, PT,
DPT, OCS, Jennifer Gabelsberg, PT, DPT, MSc, MTC, WCS, BCB-
PMD, Carrie Pagliano, PT, DPT, OCS, WCS, MTC
Past CSM education sessions successfully focused on women in
PT professional leadership with emphasis placed upon identifying
pathways to power, establishing sponsorship opportunities,
networking and negotiating. Absent from these conversations,
however, is the question of what professional leadership
opportunities are available to those who also have a family. Do
we pack away our stilettos and embrace the spit up or learn
how to navigate diapers and deadlines? Women make up a
large percentage of our professional membership, holding a
majority of leadership roles. However, there is a disparity
between the large number of early-mothers and early motherleaders
within our profession. Research demonstrates that the
stage of professional growth and development may play a role
in how we define work-life balance, with job involvement
showing little correlation during a time period in which many turn
attention to family development (Darcy 2012). Mentoring
programs for physician-mothers can be models for PTs, however
may not address concerns that the majority of child care and
home management is unique to mothers. (Lechner 2009)
Mothers are excellent candidates for leadership, demonstrating
the ability to manage and be energy efficient across both
professional and personal fronts. This panel presentation
addresses mothers in leadership positions within a variety of
aspects of the PT profession including the APTA, Section
Components, academic, clinical and entrepreneurial settings.
The panel will be moderated by a non-PT content expert in the
area of healthcare resource management.
Trauma-Induced Pelvic Floor Disorders:
Implications for Physical Therapists
Presented by Gill Brook, MCSP, MSc, Ruth Broom, PT, Jovita
Daniel, BMR(PT), MSc, PhD, Theresa (Tracy) Spitznagle, PT, DPT,
MHS, WCS, Rebecca Stephenson, PT, DPT, MS, WCS
Obstetric fistulae and female genital mutilation are experienced
by women in many countries throughout the world. This
international panel will discuss pelvic floor trauma's impact on
global women's health issues and ramifications for physical
therapy. Prolonged, obstructed labor can result in vesicovaginal
or rectovaginal fistula and subsequent incontinence, even after
surgery. Physical therapy care for these women includes pelvic
floor muscle reeducation pre- and postoperatively, and
rehabilitation for those with associated problems, such as foot
drop or joint contractures. Women affected by female genital
mutilation (FGM) are most commonly referred to physical
therapy for urinary dysfunction, perineal trauma during vaginal
delivery, dyspareunia, postnatal urinary dysfunction, chronic
pain, and vaginismus. The speakers will present a case of a
primiparous woman who sustained a vesicovaginal fistula during
obstructed labor, as well as a case of a woman whose quality of
life was significantly impacted by infibulation sustained as a very
young girl.
PT, DPT, WCS, ATC, Abigail Foster, PT, DPT, Audra Zastrow, PT, DPT,
CLT
In this session, leaders in the field of pelvic and women's health
physical therapy will discuss their work. Topics will include pelvic
pain, incontinence, pregnancy and post partum, the female
athlete, osteoporosis, and lymphedema. The speakers will also
discuss how they got started in their specialties. This forum is
geared towards students who want to learn about this rapidly
growing specialty of physical therapy. It will also be informative
for current clinicians without extensive knowledge or exposure to
the specialty who want to know more.
Lumbo-Sacral Pain
Presented by Peter O'Sullivan, Dip Physio, Post Grad Dip Manip
Ther, PhD, FACP, APAM
This session is based on the ongoing research into the
contemporary management of disabling lumbo-pelvic pain
disorders. It provides a theoretical framework for understanding
the multi-dimensional mechanisms underlying non-specific
lumbo-pelvic pain and a cognitive functional approach to their
management.
Men in Pelvic Health:
What Are We Thinking?
Presented by Nate Mancillas, PT, DPT, MS,
Ryan Smith, PT, DPT, ATC
Many male new graduates and male physical therapists not only
lack understanding of pelvic health, but also exhibit uncertainty
and lack of confidence in initiating a conversation with a female
patient on those issues. There are also many male patients with
pelvic health issues who are largely underserved. This session will
suggest actions male PTs can take to advance their
understanding of pelvic health and help serve this already
underserved population. This session comes from the perspective
of 2 male new graduates who understand that the pelvic floor
has many more implications across all aspects of the physical
therapy realm. This session also will be beneficial for current
physical therapy students to broaden their scope and gain a full
appreciation that physical therapy is much more than just
orthopedics or neurology, but rather an all-encompassing
biopsychosocial model that includes pelvic health.
Complex Pelvic Floor Cases in the
Neurological Patient
Presented by Devon Gaydosh, PT, DPT,
Carina Siracusa, PT, DPT, WCS
Patients being treated for a neurological insult can have a
variety of side effects that can affect their overall recovery. It is
important for neurologic physical therapists to collaborate with
pelvic floor therapists to ensure that bowel and bladder issues
are not hindering their overall neurological treatment. This session
will focus on the collaboration between neurologic PTs and
pelvic floor PTs. The speakers will present complex cases,
including those with cardiovascular accident, brain cancer,
multiple sclerosis, and multisystem atrophy. The neurologic
physical therapist will identify the key barriers of the bowel and
bladder symptoms to the progression of function with a
neurologic injury. The pelvic floor physical therapist will discuss
the screening and evaluative tools used and how to integrate
pelvic floor treatment into the overall neurologic plan of care,
keeping in mind funding and reimbursement.
The Role of Coccyx Dysfunction
in Lumbopelvic Pain: Evaluation
and Treatment
Presenting Michelle Hunt, PT, OCS, FCFMT, FAAOMPT, Janine
Nesin, PT, DPT, OCS, Julie Sarton, PT, DPT, WCS
Coccydynia is a common presentation experienced by patients
in both the orthopedic and womens health setting and results in
restriction of the most basic of all functional activities sitting.
Often missed as a contributing factor of both lumbosacral pain
and pelvic floor dysfunction, coccyx restriction can play a role
not only in low back pain, SI joint dysfunction, and sacral pain
but also in pelvic and sexual pain, painful voiding, painful
defecation and difficulty with bowel and bladder emptying. Due
to the attachment of the pelvic floor onto the coccyx and its
relationship to the sacrum, it is essential that pelvic floor and
orthopedic PTs manifest a solid understanding of the evaluation
and treatment of the sacrococcygeal region and be able to
treat it effectively. This session will provide an up-to-date solid
foundation for the PT in the evaluation and treatment of coccyx
dysfunction using both external and internal manual techniques,
functional mobilization, visceral mobilization application and
therapeutic exercise integration. Review of anatomy, pathology
and patient education with sitting modifications and cushion
selection will also be highlighted.
Bike-Friendly Physical Therapy:
Keeping the Public in the Saddle
Presented by Kevin Schmidt, PT, MSPT, CMP
National rates of bicycling are on the rise as cities, businesses,
and urban areas are embracing the health and economical
benefits of a 'car-less' lifestyle. With this global increase in
bicycling infrastructure and daily bike commuters, physical
therapists have a unique opportunity to assist this population due
to the high prevalence of repetitive stress/strain and posturerelated
injury and pain that riders experience on the bike. The
purpose of this lecture is to address the growing trends in urban
and city bicycling, the commonplace of cycling-related injury,
identify common cycling injuries at all levels of riding, and the
role of the physical therapist in managing this growing
16
population. The speakers will also profile out office, Pedal PT, as
an example of how we manage this unique, growing population
in one of the highest bicycling volume areas in the United States.
Building Your Practice Through
Cross-Referrals With Wellness Professionals
Presented by Blair Green, PT, MPT, OCS, Heather King-Smith, MPH
Many women have access to fitness and wellness services that
specialize in prenatal and postpartum exercise, low back, hip,
and other joint pain, as well as general health services. Clients
often entrust medical information to their personal trainers,
massage therapists, and yoga and Pilates instructors, yet may
not seek out physical therapy care due to lack of information or
education about PT services. Fitness and wellness professionals
can be a valuable referral source for women who could benefit
from physical therapy. Physical therapists can provide better
continuity of care by referring patients to qualified fitness and
wellness professionals to begin or continue appropriate exercise
or muscle training once physical therapy is no longer medically
necessary. Strong relationships with fitness and wellness providers
help to drive referrals, ensure continuity of care, and provide
opportunity for education in addition to maximizing benefit for
an efficient cost to the patient.
Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,
Etc: Treat the Patient, Not the Label
Presented by Adriaan Louw, PT, PhD
Apart from the epidemic of chronic pain, physical therapists
constantly encounter "new" diagnoses. The extensive and
growing list includes fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome,
irritable bowel syndrome, chronic Lyme disease, non-celiac
gluten sensitivity, and more. Neuroscience and neuroimmunology,
however, would argue there is an underlying
commonality in these "unique" disorders. Pain, along with various
biological systems, are all activated during a stress response; if
one system is overprotective, it leads to a certain cluster of
common signs and symptoms that is labeled as one of these
"new" diagnoses. Regardless of the label a patient presents with,
pain is pain, and evidence-based treatments such as pain
neuroscience education, aerobic exercise, goal setting, graded
exposure, and others should form the cornerstone of a wellrounded
physical therapy treatment. This session will showcase
how various biological systems present in line with common
labels encountered in the clinic, and how to identify the
dominant mechanisms and treatments for each of these
"unique" conditions.
When the World Won't Stop Spinning:
Dizziness Through the Female Lifespan
Presented by Susan Clinton, PT, DScPT, OCS, WCS, FAAOMPT,
Scott Euype, PT, DPT, MHS, OCS, Carrie Pagliano, PT, DPT, OCS,
WCS, MTC
Women have significantly more episodes of dizziness than men.
Dizziness and headaches in the first postpartum year requires
differential diagnosis. Dizziness has many causes, but in many
cases with the appropriate differential diagnosis, it can be
treated successfully with physical therapy interventions. Dizziness
may include a cervicogenic component, which can be a
contributor in cervical-related headaches, migraines, and
temporomandibular joint disorder, all of which have appropriate
physical therapy interventions. When left untreated, dizziness can
result in falling and other more serious injuries. Considerations for
physical therapy examination and treatment of dizziness will be
discussed, with special attention to unique symptoms seen in
women through the lifespan. The session will conclude with a
discussion of specific case examples of women diagnosed with
dizziness, and the physical therapist’s clinical decision making
process.
Female Athlete Strength and Conditioning:
Bridging Rehab and Fitness
Presented by Brianna Battles, MA, BSc Kin, CSCS (NSCA, USAW),
Julie Wiebe, PT, MPT, BSc
Female athletes often desire to maintain high levels of fitness
during pregnancy and return to fitness immediately postpartum.
This is often without regard for or knowledge of their need for
musculoskeletal and/or pelvic health rehabilitation prior to or in
conjunction with a gradually progressed fitness program.
Women reach out first to fitness professionals because of a lack
of understanding of the difference between getting their body
back vs. function back. This session will promote cooperative
communication between the team of professionals that help
restore and return women to daily and athletic demands. A
pre/postnatal strength and conditioning coach and a physical
therapist will discuss the unique structural and postpartum
considerations of women who want to return to high levels of
fitness. Attendees will take away clinically relevant tools for
cueing, form consideration, and lifting strategy modifications to
meet musculoskeletal, pelvic health, and performance needs
simultaneously.
Specialty Practice in a Rural Setting:
Diamonds in the Rough
Presented by Lisa Lahr, PT, DPT, CI, Audra Zastrow, PT, DPT, CLT
Most physical therapists who practice in a rural setting consider
themselves Jacks-of-all-trades in the field of physical therapy. But
how do specialists fare in these settings? What does it mean to
be a women’s health (or a wound care or pediatric) specialist in
a rural area? This session will reveal the trials and tribulations of
working in rural setting and describe the unique patient
populations and opportunities that exist in these cities. The
speakers will discuss ways to improve rural patient care, grass
roots marketing, provider education, and word-of-mouth to build
a referral base. Attendees will learn how different specialty areas
can work together to improve holistic patient care. Come with
an open mind and willingness to improve the lives of women’s
health patients in a rural setting by working to build a health
care team.
Inappropriate Patient Sexual Behavior:
Evidence-Based Interventions
Presented by Jill Boissonnault, PT, PhD, WCS,
Ziadee Cambier, PT, DPT
Inappropriate patient sexual behavior (IPSB) is any verbal or
physical act of an explicit, or perceived, sexual nature, which is
unacceptable within the social context in which it is carried out.
IPSB encompasses a spectrum of patient behaviors, ranging from
staring and suggestive remarks, to genital exposure, forceful
groping, and rape. IPSB is pervasive in clinical practice and has
significant negative consequences for both clinicians and
patients. The speakers will demonstrate 3 verbal techniques for
addressing IPSB, use small-group discussion and role-play to
practice responses, and outline specific strategies for cognitively
impaired patients. The session also will cover prevention and
management strategies for high-risk settings, and reporting and
documentation.
Ultrasound Imaging to Objectify Tissue
Changes Following Physical Therapy
Interventions
Presented by Ramona Horton, PT, MPT, Mary Ellen Kramp, PT, DPT,
CLT-LANA
Ultrasound imaging is moving beyond its origins as a tool for
diagnosis of pathology in the hands of radiology professional. As
this technology becomes more available, it is being applied for
training motor function as well as to identify changes within the
musculoskeletal system. The standard of test-retest has long
been utilized within physical therapy to objectify tissue change
as a result of interventions. As equipment becomes more
affordable, ultrasound imaging is moving from the research lab
and into clinical practice, opening up an entirely new dimension
of objective measurement beyond motor strength and joint
ROM. This session will address the basic knowledge of how to
read and interpret relevant structures in the ultrasound image,
identify landmarks that can be used for an infinite number of
test-retest measures following manual therapy interventions, as
well as motor training. Attendees may participate in a live
demonstration with musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging.
From the Glottis to the Pelvic Floor:
Clinical Connections
Presented by Susan Clinton, PT, DScPT, OCS, WCS, FAAOMPT,
Julie Wiebe, PT, MPT, BSc
What role do the intertwined intrathoracic and intra-abdominal
pressure systems have in musculoskeletal and pelvic health
dysfunction? How do the top and bottom of the respiratory
system and alimentary track connect anatomically, neurophysiologically,
and structurally? How do we optimize the
function of these systems? This session will explore the answers to
these questions as it relates to common dysfunctions of the
lumbopelvic region. Discussion of the central stability system will
include the contribution and links between alignment, breath
mechanics, pressure systems, and cranial and autonomic
nervous systems. Participants will be provided with clinical
reasoning tools to apply in the integration of upper and lower
quarter movement strategies.
Talking Points: An Oxford-Style Debate
on Dry Needling
Presented by Mark Milligan, PT, DPT, CERT, TPS, OCS, FAAOMPT,
Scot Morrison, PT, DPT, Kyle Ridgeway, PT, DPT,
Kenneth Venere, PT, DPT, Kali Aucoin, PT, DPT
Dry needling is arguably the most popular and fastest growing
intervention in physical therapy today. There has been a
remarkable increase in continuing education offerings,
published research (an eight-fold increase in citations from 2010
to 2015 compared to 2000 to 2005) and legislative battles
fighting to protect PTs right to utilize dry needling. This Oxfordstyle
debate will address the motion: This house believes PTs
should implement dry needling into practice.? Each side is
charged to address the implementation of dry needling into
clinical practice in regards to research, theoretical construct,
cost of training, legislative action, and other considerations.
Unplugged!: Breastfeeding Pain
and the Role of Physical Therapists
Presented by Peg Maas, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT
Recurrent clogged ducts, mastitis, and other sources of pain
associated with breastfeeding are common problems and
frequently lead women to discontinue nursing their infants. As
specialists in tissue function, physical therapists are well-suited to
be team members in the treatment and support of women who
are experiencing painful lactation. By providing education,
manual therapy, modalities, and home program ideas, physical
therapists who have expertise in this area can help resolve and
prevent recurrence of painful episodes, thereby making a
significant contribution to breastfeeding success. In this session,
attendees will learn the anatomy and physiology of lactation,
the role of the autonomic nervous system and lymphatic system
in breastfeeding function, and how to use manual lymphatic
massage, education, and other physical therapy skills and
modalities to assist these women. The session will include
differential diagnosis and case studies, and provide strategies for
starting a program to care for this population.
Vaginismus and the Cultural Context:
Her Body Tells Her Story
Presented by Karen Brandon, PT, DSc, WCS, Sara Nasserzadeh,
PhD, DipPST
Models of sexuality that include biopsychosociospiritual factors
offer a more integrated approach for assessing sexual concerns
and dysfunctions. Culture plays a role in how we perceive and
express our sexuality. Vaginismus compromises a woman's ability
to engage in any form of vaginal penetration, including sexual
intercourse, manual penetration, insertion of tampons or
menstrual cups, and gynecological examinations. Traditionally,
pelvic floor physical therapists would be recommended by
physicians to address the mechanical and physical aspects of
the uncoordinated pelvic floor muscle reaction. Treated
biomechanically in isolation, improvement for this condition is
often unsuccessful. Vaginismus may contribute to depression/
anxiety, marital distress, inability to complete medical screening,
and more widely in their cultural roles as desirable and fertile
women and wives. Physical therapists working with patients
should be sensitive and possess cultural competency skills in
order to establish successful patient rapport, set realistic patientdriven
goals, identify key issues that may require behavioral
interventions, and possess a solid network of professionals to offer
the patient holistic support. This session will share current
evidence on cultural aspects of vaginismus, and clinical
applications for the psychosexual therapist and the physical
therapist.
And organizations and companies are paying the price (the
estimate of disengagement is over $350 billion in lost
productivity, accidents, theft, and turnover annually). Your
strengths should be your primary focus both personally and
corporately.
Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment is one of the leading tools for
discovering and utilizing a person’s top strengths. It identifies a
person’s top five natural preferences (out of 34 possible). And
when unpacked via learning, coaching, and application it has
the potential of unlocking a company's most powerful resource:
people and their strengths. The purpose of this session is to help
participants understand their individual strengths, and to
discover how their strengths interact most effectively with the
people on their teams. The primary emphasis will be on team
dynamics and process via the optimizing of everyone's strengths
Building Your Best Team:
How to Leverage Your PT Superpowers
Presented by Karen Brandon, PT, DSc, WCS, Greg Nelson, DMin
World class teams have two things in common: they pay rigorous
attention to productivity as well as positivity (the culture of the
team). Research is showing that central to both elements is the
emphasis on discovering, leveraging, and valuing everyone's
unique strengths profiles. Google's latest report on what makes
the best teams possible concludes that it is the element of
"psychological safety" where everyone feels totally free to
contribute by deed and word without the fear of being put
down or judged and criticized - a culture of positivity where
kindness, empathy, respect, and honor for each other's
uniqueness and strengths are central to the team experience for
everyone. And yet workplace studies are revealing that 66% of
people report never being asked to contribute what they're
strongest at to their work environment. This has led to the highest
levels of non-engagement in workplace history.
Promoting Mobility in Antepartum Patients
on Bed Rest
Presented by Elizabeth Northrop, PT, DPT, WCS
Obstetricians commonly prescribe bed rest to patients during
pregnancy by obstetricians for a variety of indications. Despite its
widespread use, the literature does not consistently demonstrate
a benefit to antepartum bed rest. Adverse effects of bed rest
are well documented, including decreased muscle function,
increased risk of venous thromboembolism, and bone loss. This
session will address the most frequent diagnoses for which bed
rest is prescribed and potential barriers for providing physical
therapy. The presenter will discuss the importance of integrating
therapeutic exercise into the management of pregnant patients
who are on bed rest or are hospitalized for prolonged periods,
and how to do so in a safe manner in collaboration with the
obstetric team. Case studies will be used to demonstrate
techniques for implementing exercise programs in antepartum
patients on various levels of activity restriction.
2017 COMBINED SECTIONS MEETING | SAN ANTONIO
HONORING & CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY
Elizabeth Noble founded the Section on
Women’s Health of the American Physical
Therapy Association in 1977 under the
original name of the Section on Obstetrics
and Gynecology. The professional
association served as a resource for
continuing education and knowledge
needed by physical therapists interested in
healthcare of women before, during, and
after pregnancy.
Today, however, the scope of practice for our nearly 3,000 Section members has widened to include
myriad health abdominal and pelvic concerns of women, men, and children: incontinence,
pelvic/vaginal pain, prenatal and postpartum musculoskeletal pain, osteoporosis, rehabilitation
following breast surgery, lower back pain, lymphedema, conditions specific to the female athlete,
fibromyalgia, chronic pain, wellness, and exercise.
Members voted to change the Section name in 1995 to Section on Women’s Health to mark the
specialized education required to address women’s physical therapy needs. In 2011, the organization
updated its mission and vision statements to recognize Section members who also treat males
affected by incontinence, pelvic pain, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis.
The Section on Women’s Health continues to focus on its role as a vital resource for physical therapists
interested in continuing education, research, and lab training from leading physical therapists.
Members also receive the Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy, networking opportunities, a
voice in advocating for physical therapy patients and the profession, specialized sessions at APTA
conferences, and more.
GET INVOLVED IN SOWH
Welcome Section Members to CSM 2017: San Antonio!
I am always excited by the gathering of our passionate members as we
share ideas, exchange knowledge, and build friendships. I would like to
introduce myself, as I am the newly appointed Volunteer Coordinator for
the SOWH. For the next three years, I will be serving to facilitate the
placement of our members in volunteer positions based on desires, skills,
and expertise. In just the six years that I have practiced as pelvic and
lymphedema therapist, I have already witnessed tremendous growth of
this field.
The success of our specialty is due to not only your personal
advancement but also your commitment to our SOWH. To our current
volunteers-Thank you for the countless hours you have contributed to an
organization that promotes compassionate care for an underserved
patient population. For our current members-I encourage each of you
to become involved within the Section. Volunteering for the SOWH
promotes advocacy of the profession, patient awareness of the field,
and an opportunity for further networking. As a Section, we rely heavily
on enthusiasm and involvement of our members. Please reach out with
any interest or questions; I look forward to meeting you all!
PURSUE THE CAPP
WHAT IS CAPP?
Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic PT (CAPP-Pelvic)
The Section on Women’s Health (SoWH) has developed the Certificate of
Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy (CAPP) to certify that a physical
therapist has completed a comprehensive education, training, and testing
program for the management of patients with diagnoses of pelvic health
dysfunction, such as urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. The CAPP is
awarded to physical therapists who complete three courses of training in
pelvic physical therapy, pass written and clinical testing requirements at each
level, and successfully complete a written case report.
WHY PURSUE CAPP?

Certificate of Achievement in Pregnancy/Postpartum (CAPP-OB)
The Section on Women´s Health (SOWH) has developed the Certificate of
Achievement in Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy to certify that a physical
therapist has completed a comprehensive education, training, and testing program
for management of pregnant and postpartum patients experiencing musculoskeletal
dysfunction and high risk pregnancy. The CAPP is awarded to physical therapists who
complete two courses of training in pregnancy and postpartum physical therapy,
pass written and clinical testing requirements at each level, and successfully
complete a written case report.
Many employers recognize and reward certificate training that is developed and hosted by the
American Physical Therapy Association and its Sections.
Our CAPP courses have expanded beyond the borders and are internationally recognized. CAPP
courses are being requested and hosted in other countries where solid, certificate training is desired for
establishing and growing strong Women’s Health Physical Therapists.
Our CAPP courses are consensus developed by our CAPP Committees that work on refining the learning
experience every year. These courses are developed by a 6-member expert committee. Individual
committee members author sections of the course materials, followed by a reviewer feedback process.
Finally, all materials are reviewed by the entire committee, who makes consensus decisions on all
aspects of each course.
Our CAPP Courses are evidence-based. All materials are created from evidence-based and clinically
applicable references and resources.
Our CAPP Courses are overseen by an independent task force. The CAPP Curriculum Oversight Task
Force (C3OTF) is an 8-member volunteer task force that convenes every 5 years to review the objectives
and all course materials for the Pelvic and OB courses. This task force provides a written report and
dialogue to offer feedback for improvements or other modifications in the materials, thus providing an
additional layer of quality control for CAPP courses.
Our CAPP Courses are participant-reflected. We take participant feedback and reviews seriously!
Participant surveys and other feedback are reviewed by the Director of Education, the CAPP Oversight
Task Force, and the CAPP Committees. Many positive changes have results through the years utilizing
the feedback we would receive from our course participants.
WHAT’S UP WITH THE NAME CHANGE?
A Mission and Vision Excursion
By Carrie Pagliano, PT, DPT
“Man does not simply exist but always decides what his existence will be, what he will
become in the next moment.”–Viktor Frankl
I would be lying if I said I knew what I was getting
into when I volunteered in the summer of 2013 to chair
a task force to explore a potential change in the
Section on Women’s Health name.
I’d be lying if I said that I totally appreciated at the
time how this work would inspire our organization to
look at itself carefully in the mirror to determine not
only who we are, but who we want to become.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to how the gravity of this
journey has deepened my commitment to a tribe of
people who I thought was already strong.
This past summer our SOWH Board of Directors sat
down with the intent of revising and updating our
strategic plan, a common association practice that
should occur every three to five years. We knew,
however, that with the depth of research we’d gained
from working with Navigate Consulting, the Name
Change Task Force, and the 2016 Membership Survey
results, there was a strong possibility we would be
doing more.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being awestruck,
contemplating our association’s 40 years of existence,
considering all the achievements of the leaders
before me. I felt the gravity and importance of
updating a mission, vision, and strategic plan of an
organization that had earned worldwide respect.
Looking at photos of the women who founded the
Section on Obstetrics and Gynecology four decades
ago, I can only imagine how they felt in the
significance of that moment.
It was with great respect, care, and an abundance of
well-researched information and membership
feedback that our board thoughtfully crafted an
updated mission, vision, and strategic plan with the
assistance of strategic consultant John Parke of
Leadership Synergies and our Association
Management Group staff. I can’t tell you the
conversations were easy, since it’s an understatement
to say we have passion among our board and
members!
What I can say, though, is that we agreed it was
simply not acceptable to merely re-commit to the
status quo and move slowly and ostensibly along. It
wasn’t enough to just be. It was imperative to channel
the energies of our founders who chose to give a
voice to those without one, to not be pushed into our
next 40 years but to consciously decide who we
wanted to become.
It is with that spirit that I’m unbelievably proud to be
part of a board and organization that isn’t afraid to
look in the mirror, tackle the big questions, and show
the leadership needed to make decisions around who
we want to be in this next moment. Who needs a
voice that we can lend ours to? Are we a “who?” Are
we a “what?” What do we—as the consultants asked
us–“own” in the physical therapy community?
I encourage you to take a few minutes to check out
the Section’s new mission, vision, and strategic plan—
again, each one informed by your feedback and our
research. Thank you for sharing so much of your own
passion and opinions with us, and please consider
getting involved in the next steps: the actual exciting
work! We will need all hands on deck to “move PT
forward” in our specialty field.
We also welcome your thoughts as the Name Change
Task Force continues its work. Specific language in the
mission, vision, and strategic plan is not necessarily
echoed in any potential name change, although
these elements should be aligned. Name choices
require separate and different considerations, and the
task force hopes to have recommendations for
membership regarding a potential name change later
this year.
We remain in active listening mode as these new
