Goals 

Goals are based 

on my needs 

Is it important to have specific and measurable 

goals? It they keep on changing, what 

is the purpose of having a goal? 

The answer to the 

first one is yes, we need 

to have goals, that too, written 

goals (one study shows that 

written goals are more likely to 

be achieved). If we do not have 

any yardstick of measurement, 

how do we know we are progressing 

and therefore when we 

are likely to reach the goal? 

But even more basic than 

that, what should be my goal? 

How do I determine the right 

goal? 

Our goals should be determined 

by our needs. So we have 

to do a needs analysis of what 

we would like to have and what 

we would like to avoid. 

One way is to think back and 

remember those incidents that 

made me happy. Then for each 

incident, I do a ‘root cause’ on 

why it made me happy. This 

will show me my needs. Then 

I create those goals that satisfy 

these needs. 

Another way is to think 

of incidents that made me 

unhappy. A root cause on this – 

why did that incident make me 

unhappy – would tell me what I 

would like to avoid. 

Once I have my needs (what 

I want and what I don’t want) 

defined, I have to do two things: 

determine the relative important 

of each need 

determine the maximum time 

frame in which this should be 

satisfied (urgency) 

Now I can find out what I 

have to do and when, and this 

determines my goals. We have 

to remember that to achieve 

something, we may have to sacrifice 

something else, and the 

important/urgent matrix above 

will help us realize our priority. 

Another aspect of needs 

analysis is to determine whether 

these are your goals or the goals 

of your influencers or loved 

ones. Sometime, we want to do 

something but our parents want 

us to do something else. The 

question is whether I sacrifice 

my happiness for my parents’ 

happiness? 

For example, I remember the 

time I got admission in one of 

the leading B-schools of India. 

Why did it make me happy? 

Because I made my parents 

proud or because my effort 

was acknowledged in front of a 

crowd. 

Why does that make me 

happy? Because I need the 

approval of people 

Why do I need approval? 

Maybe I have self-esteem issues 

and I need to compare with others 

to define me 

So if I am seeking a goal 

in terms of what type of job I 

should look for, I should look 

for a job that gives me a lot of 

approval, or allows me to do 

peer comparison and which 

does not lower my self-esteem. 

Sales would be a bit of an issue 

as a job, because it has a lot 

of rejection built in. However, 

advisory services based on my 

competency would be good, 

because a client would be grateful 

for my services. 

I can now set up a time frame 

for creating a competency that 

can be appreciated by clients 

and to find a job that allows me 

to use this competency. 

Since these needs keep 

changing, our goals will keep 

changing. 

Suppose there are two conflicting 

goals? 

If I have done my needs 

analysis in terms of all the type 

of needs I have and the priority 

of each need, and have determined 

who in my life is important

are gluten free. You might have

to prepare these Caramel Apple 

Cinnamon Rolls, but they will 

be worth answering that early 

alarm. 

INGREDIENTS 

2 cups unsweetened almond 

milk, or regular milk 

6 tablespoons unsalted butter 

or non-dairy butter plus ½ teaspoon, 

divided 2 ¼-ounce packages 

rapid-rise instant yeast 2 

tablespoons granulated sugar 

¼ teaspoon salt plus a pinch, 

divided 1 teaspoon vanilla 

extract 4 cups gluten-free 1:1 

baking flour, plus more for 

rolling out 2 medium apples, 

peeled, cored and cut into small 

dice ¾ cup brown sugar 

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 

¼ cup softened unsalted 

butter ½ cup chopped walnuts, 

optional ½ cup caramel sauce, 

store-bought or homemade 

DIRECTIONS 

Place the milk and 6 tablespoons 

butter in a medium pot 

and cook over medium heat 

until butter is melted. Transfer 

mixture to a large bowl and let 

cool until mixture reaches 110° 

F. Once cooled, add the yeast 

and let activate for 10 minutes. 

Next add the sugar, salt and 

vanilla, and let sit another minute. 

Add the flour to the milk 

mixture ½ cup at a time. Stir 

between each addition and stop 

when the dough is no longer 

sticky. You may not need the 

entire 4 cups or you may need 

an extra tablespoon or two of 

flour depending on how sticky 

your dough is. Form dough into 

a ball, cover bowl with plastic 

wrap and let sit in a warm place 

for 1 hour. 

While dough is rising, heat 

a large pan over medium heat 

and add the ½ teaspoon butter. 

Add the diced apples and pinch 

of salt and cook until apples are 

softened, about 10 minutes. In 

a small bowl, add the brown 

sugar and cinnamon and mix 

until combined; set aside. 

Preheat oven to 350° F. 

Cover a large flat surface with 

plastic wrap. You will need to 

overlap 2 or 3 pieces to make 

sure you have a large enough 

space. Sprinkle plastic wrap 

with a small amount of flour 

and turn dough onto the plastic 

wrap. Use a rolling pin to 

roll the dough into a rectangle 

shape, until dough is about 

¼-inch thick and approximately 

20 x 12 inches wide. 

Spread the softened butter 

onto the dough and sprinkle 

evenly with the brown sugar 

mixture. Top with the cooked 

apples and chopped walnuts. 

Use the plastic wrap to lift 

the dough and tightly roll it 

up, removing the wrap as you 

do. Carefully wrap the cinnamon 

log in the plastic wrap and 

refrigerate for 30 minutes to 

make it easier to cut the cinnamon 

rolls. 

Cut the cinnamon log into 

1-inch thick slices and place 

each slice in a 12-inch ovensafe 

pan. Bake the cinnamon 

rolls for 25-30 minutes. 

Remove from the oven and top 

with caramel sauce. Best when 

served warm.

Pumpkin Crepes. They’re easy 

to make, and your kids will love 

adding toppings to create their 

own variation. 

INGREDIENTS 

1½ cups all-purpose gluten-free 

fl our mix 

½ teaspoon xanthan gum 

½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 

1 tablespoon sugar 

½ teaspoon baking powder 

½ teaspoon salt 

½ cup pumpkin puree 

1½ cups water 

2 large eggs 

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 

½ teaspoon vanilla 

Directions 

In a small bowl, combine all dry 

ingredients. 

In a larger bowl, combine all 

wet ingredients. 

Combine the wet and dry ingredients, 

whisking until nearly 

smooth (a few lumps are all 

right).In a hot frying pan at 

medium heat, pour ¾ cup of 

batter onto the middle of the 

pan. Lift the pan and turn it to 

distribute the batter over the 

entire bottom of the pan. When 

little holes and air bubbles form 

in the top of the batter, use a 

spatula to carefully flip the 

crepe over and brown the other 

side. This does not take long. 

Top with your favorite syrup 

and fresh fruit and sprinkle with 

sugar, or add any other toppings 

desired. 

Cook’s tips: The following flour 

blend works well in this recipe: 

4 cups superfine brown rice 

flour, 1⅓ cups potato starch, ⅔ 

cup tapioca starch. Combine all 

ingredients in a large zipper-top 

bag. Shake until well blended. 

Add more milk if the batter is 

too thick to spread nicely across 

the pan.

Preheat the oven to 375º F. Put 

the oats, cinnamon, baking 

powder and salt into a medium 

bowl and mix. In a large bowl, 

add milk, brown sugar, granulated 

sugar, vanilla, maple syrup 

and lemon juice. Mix until 

sugar is dissolved, and then add 

the dry mixture to the wet mixture. 

Stir until combined and 

carefully mix in the chopped 

raspberries and almonds. Pour 

mixture into a greased 9 x 

13-inch baking dish. Use a large 

spoon to even out the top of the 

mixture. 

Bake for 25-30 minutes, until 

firm and cooked through. Enjoy 

oatmeal bake warm or cold and 

top with whipped cream and 

raspberries if desired. 

Goat Cheese, Kale & 

Red Pepper Frittata 

SERVES 6-8

1 teaspoon olive oil 

½ small yellow onion, diced

1 medium red pepper, diced 

¼ teaspoon black pepper 

2 packed cups chopped kale 

1 dozen large eggs 

¼ cup milk 

2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled 

Salsa and Greek non-fat 

yogurt for topping, if desired 

Serve with toast or warmed 

corn tortillas, if desired 

DIRECTIONS 

Preheat oven to 400° F. Heat 

a 10- to 12-inch oven-safe pan 

over medium heat. Add olive 

oil, onion and a pinch of salt, 

and sauté for 2 minutes. Add the 

garlic, red pepper, ½ teaspoon 

salt and black pepper and cook 

for another 3 minutes, until vegetables 

are starting to soften. 

Add the kale and cook until it is 

wilted, 2 minutes. 

Crack the eggs into a large 

bowl, add the milk and whisk 

together. Pour egg mixture over 

cooked vegetables and make 

sure all vegetables are covered 

evenly with eggs. Sprinkle the 

goat cheese crumbles over the 

top and leave the frittata on the 

heat for about 1 minute to let 

the edges set. 

Place frittata in the oven 

and bake until eggs are cooked 

through and set, 10-15 minutes. 

Slice frittata into desired 

number of pieces. Garnish with 

salsa or yogurt. Frittata can

opened for the inaugural Ultra 

Trail Drakensberg, a 100km 

trail running challenge that 

will form part of a festival of 

trail running in the Southern Drakensberg 

on 29 April 2017 and offers qualifying 

points for the iconic Ultra Trail Mont 

Blanc. 

The weekend’s programme 

also includes the 62 kilometer 

Giants Cup Uncut (GCU) and 

the novel 30 kilometer Sundowner 

Run (SDR), both taking 

place at the same time as 

the signature 100 kilometer 

Ultra Trail Drakensberg (UTD) 

trail run that ascends Sani Pass 

before traversing the escarpment 

via Twelve Apostles, 

Khanti Ridge, Gxalingenwa 

Gorge, Hodgson’s Peaks, Garden 

Castle, Rhino Peak and 

Langalibalele’s Pass. 

The ultra-trail race is the first 

of its kind to take place in the 

Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage 

Site and offering a route 

the serious trail runners have 

hankered after for many years 

that covers 4400 m of vertical 

climb and occupies an altitude 

window between 1600m and 

2865m. 

Vitally, for serious trail runners, 

the event has been confirmed 

as a 5 point ITRA qualifier 

for the iconic Ultra Trail 

Mont Blanc. 

“This will take trial running 

up a couple of notches and will 

test the limits of endurance of 

even the finest athletes,” said 

race organiser, Spurg Flemington. 

Flemington confirms a 30 

hour cut-off for the 100km UTD 

event has been put in place 

and said that the 62km Giants 

Cup Uncut and the 30km Sundowner 

Run would be timed to 

allow the athletes taking part in 

all three events to converge on 

the common finish venue at the 

Bushman’s Neck Hotel at more 

or less the same time, a move 

they hope will encourage camaraderie 

between the athletes taking 

part in this trail running festival. 

The 62km Giants Cup Uncut 

starts at the Sani Pass Hotel and 

follows the exact path of the 

Giants Cup Hiking Trail, with 

2400m of vertical climbing and 

occupies an altitude window 

between 1600m and 2150m. It 

carries an 11 hour cut-off and 

a three point ITRA rating for 

Ultra Trail Mont Blanc. 

The Sundowner Run starts 

at Castleburn at 4pm, allowing 

the runners to run into the sunset 

and then complete the rest of 

the 30km run in darkness using 

their own headlamps. 

All three events will conclude 

with an ongoing finish 

line party and an awards lunch 

on the Sunday. 

Entries have been strictly 

limited for all three events, with 

the 100km UTD catering for a 

maximum of 300 runners and 

the 62km GCU and 30km SDR 

open to a maximum of 150 runners 

each.

event kicks off and with three 

different races to choose from

“There has been a lot of 

interest in the race over social 

media and the dialogue has 

been great so we are hoping that 

there will be a good take up of 

entries during this new year special 

that we have on the go at 

the moment,” he said.

something different and by giving

the year it will hopefully add to 

the already significant interest 

in the race.” 

The race offers the runners 

three different options with 

100km, 62km and 30km distances 

with each of these races 

offering runners a unique experience.

kind to take place in the Drakensberg 

as it is the first 100km 

race to take place there. 

“The race takes place in 

the beautiful Maloti Drakensberg 

World Heritage Site which 

offers runners spectacular views 

and breath-taking scenery.

Cup Uncut (GCU), incorporates 

all 5 days of the wellknown 

Giant’s Cup Hiking trail 

in one fell swoop and is an ideal 

tester for those doing their first 

Ultra and/or for those building

“The 30km race, the Sundowner

innovative in that it starts at 

4.30 in the afternoon and runners 

will run into the sunset and 

early evening.

a first taste of night running and

the iconic Rhino Peak as the sun 

sets behind it. 

“SDR entries are available 

for solos and for teams of two 

for those wanting to do it with

place in the Maloti World Heritage 

Site, Running Man Adventures 

ensure that all of their 

events contribute to conservation 

in the area, another unique

Karkloof Falls. 

The challenge will be the 

climb up to the Karkloof 

escarpment where panoramic 

views of the area will open up”

The out and back format 

allows for maximum spectator 

engagement and the 10 aid 

stations will be visited twice 

by participants. Pacers will be 

allowed in the second half of 

the race. 

“The course is challenging 

in terms of distance and ascent 

(nearly 4300m of climbing), 

but is not too technical” notes 

Jack Davis of TrailLab. “We 

feel that the distance speaks for 

itself and the smooth, runnable 

tracks and trails of the Karkloof 

will make this an accessible 

100 Miler.” While it is only the 

dedicated ultra-runners that can 

take on this distance on trail, 

the Karkloof100 aims to be as 

inclusive as possible, encouraging 

seconding and spectating, 

and through the inclusion 

of pacers. 

The event will also host a 

50 Mile race for those athletes 

looking to test their limits or 

building up to tackle the 100 

Mile event in 2018.

two encounters of the 

series, Matt Bouman and 

Hayley Nixon shrugged off 

the brides maids tag to take their first 

wins respectively at the Daikin Surfski 

Challenge, Race Three of the 2017 FNB 

Surfski Series at Marine Surf Lifesaving 

Club on Friday evening. 

Despite the field being 

slightly depleted with paddlers 

opting to travel to Underberg 

early for the N3TC Drak 

Challenge starting on Saturday, 

SMG/Epic Kayaks' Matt 

Bouman was surprised by the 

conditions that were served up 

to the competitors. 

"It was another really cool 

paddle," the experienced Bouman 

said. "The wind was a bit 

surprising as we were expecting 

a south-easter which 

would have been a bit miserable 

but we got a pumping 

south-wester which gave us 

nice gentle bumps all the way 

to North Beach." 

The dice at the front of 

the race was between Bouman 

and Wade Krieger, a battle 

that has played out often in 

the surf in and around Durban. 

"The race was fun as 

always, Wade is paddling well 

and for a while I didn't think 

that I was going to drop him. 

"It's an honest, hard race 

every Friday with nowhere to 

hide and I am grateful that I 

was able to come out on top," 

added Bouman. 

Having finished second 

in the opening two races of 

the series to Bridgitte Hartley, 

Euro Steel/Carbonology 

Sports' Hayley Nixon is in for 

a bumper weekend of racing 


starting with an impressive 

win at the FNB Surfski Series. 

"I am glad that I was able 

to come down and do the race 

before leaving for the Drak 

Challenge tomorrow," she 

mentioned. "The south-wester 

meant that we had a few more 

bumps and runs to try and 

catch on the way to the can at 

North Beach. 

"There was a bit of a head 

wind coming back which 

forced you to work hard." 

Nixon was the first to admit 

that the field was not as strong 

as previous weeks but she 

knew that it was important to 

keep her wits about her with 

the likes of Michelle Burn 

chasing her the whole way. 

"It was a bit of a depleted 

field with some of the girls 

making the trip up to Underberg 

early but with the likes of 

Michelle Burn on the start line 

you can never be complacent. 

"I was happy that I had a 

great race and with this being 

my third week back in training 

things are starting to feel 

better and I feel a bit more 

connected to the boat," Nixon 

added. 

Jason Ekstrand and Richard 

Lowe made it three wins from 

three in the doubles category 

on Friday while Sharon Armstrong 

and Jonty Dobrowsky 

taking the mixed doubles honours. 

In the short course it was 

Matthew Mouron who took 

his third in a row with Keaton

Adam eyeing top 10 

at 2017 FNB Dusi

Republic marathon paddling 

star Jakub Adam is no stranger 

to the FNB Dusi Canoe 

Marathon having raced to an 

impressive third with Cam Schoeman in 

his maiden Dusi in 2014, however Adam is 

hoping that he can recreate some of that 

form in a K1 when he takes on the famous 

race from 16-18 February. 

Adam and his 2016 K2 partner 

Jason Graham had to withdraw 

from the race due to Graham 

falling ill but despite this 

Adam continued and finished 

the race in a K1, his first finish 

in a single canoe at the threeday 

race. 

The 30 year old Euro Steel 

star is no stranger to the paddling 

conditions in South Africa 

having spent a lot of time training 

and racing amongst some 

of the strongest paddlers in the 

world at his Natal Canoe Club 

base in Pietermaritzburg. 

Despite understanding what 

to expect, Adam has never done 

the full Dusi in a K1 and he 

understands the challenge that 

the race is going to serve up 

with tough portages and some 

potentially scorching days in the 

valley. 

“I am really looking for 

to doing my first full Dusi in 

a K1,” Adam said. “It is an 

incredible challenge, one that 

I am really looking forward 

to because I have been training 

really hard for the race this 

year.” 

Adam is a flat-water marathon 

specialist which means he 

has the stamina to match the 

paddlers at the front end of the 

field however with so many different 

factors to consider during 

the Dusi he is going to have his 

work cut out for him if he is to 

reach his goal. 

“I want to finish in the top 

ten this year and I think if I

“Everyone is training really 

hard and I know that it will 

be difficult to get into the top 

10 but I feel that I am in good 

shape and I really feel confident 

when my training is going well. 

“My confidence takes a bit of 

a knock when I am not paddling 

well or am tired so I will need 

to stay strong and be confident 

that I have done enough preparation 

when the race comes 

around!” he mentioned. 

Despite his tough 2016 Dusi 

and the pressures of pushing 

for a top 10 spot, Adam is also 

looking forward to the other 

side of the Dusi.

Smit to leave 

the Dolphins 

after 14 great 

years 

Durban Veteran Hollywoodbets 

Dolphins player Daryn Smit has 

announced his retirement from the 

Durban based franchise that he has 

represented throughout his career at 

the end of the current season as he plans to return 

to his English county club Ramsbottom, 

that he has represented in the last 

three seasons, in the Lancashire 

league later in the year. 

After 14 incredible years with the Hollywoodbets 

Dolphins and the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, stalwart 

Daryn Smit has decided to immigrate to the UK where he 

will continue playing at Ramsbottom Cricket Club, a club 

he has represented for the past three seasons.

wicketkeeper and part time 

spinner has been a popular 

member of the franchise seside 

for 14 years, and a senior and 

leader in the team. 

“I have enjoyed a long and 

committed career with the 

Dolphins and never seriously

franchise cricket 

anywhere else other 

than in Durban 

and for this 

team,” 

said 

Smit. 

“I am grateful 

for the opportunities 

I’ve been given here 

and have thoroughly 

enjoyed my time at the 

franchise. I will see 

out the rest of my contract 

with the Dolphins 

and be committed, as 

always, to contributing 

whatever I can in the 

remaining matches of 

the season. 

“I am proud of my 

14 year career. I’ve never 

been motivated by money and 

in these modern times it’s quite 

rare for a cricketer to remain 

with one team for so long. I’ve 

seen many players come and go 

and have forged some lasting 

friendships with team mates and 

other people through cricket. 

“I’m stepping down and 

leaving Kingsmead with many 

good 

memories and with a 

smile 

on my face, which is 

important for a player to do 

whenever possible,” said Smit. 

“I would like to thank the 

Dolphins and KZN Cricket 

Union, especially my team 

mates, the coaching and support 

staff and those administrators 

who have been closely involved 

with the team,” he added. 

“I would also like to thank 

the players association, SACA, 

for its great support and for 

assisting with my education, 

personal development 

and preparing me for life 

beyond cricket.

Smit said that to him, cricket 

was more than just a game and 

there 

are so many memories 

that he holds dear to his heart 

on and 

off the field. 

“Definitely something 

that cricket has afforded me 

over the last 15 years was an 

opportunity to travel, to see different 

countries, meet different 

people and experience the world 

and that is something I would 

have probably never achieved 

had I worked an ordinary office 

job.” 

Amongst other things he is 

mostly proud of was winning 

the Ram Slam in 2013/2014, 

a moment of victory which he 

says was a very emotional one 

for him and also making the 

representatives’ teams – the SA 

U19, emerging players’ team, 

South African’s A side as well 

as being selected for the 2009 

T20 World Cup initial squad. 

Smit, who made his firstclass 

debut in 2004, has 

amassed just under 5500 runs in 

the four-day format with a top 

score of 156* along with 324 

catches and 106 wickets – an 

example of his impressive dynamism 

within the side. 

His strong glove work and 

steady leg-spin bowling always 

offered the Dolphins a variety 

of options and his commitment 

to the side in all formats of the 

game could never be faulted.

scooped his fourth N3TC 

Drak Challenge title as he out 

sprinted the reigning world 

champion Hank McGregor at 

the end of a riveting 65km canoe marathon 

that also entrenched Abby Solms as 

the race's most successful paddler when 

she won her seventh women's title. 

From the first stage start at 

Castleburn in the mist on Saturday 

morning it was clear 

that the title race was simply 

between McGregor and Birkett, 

the current number one and two 

ranked marathon paddlers in the 

world, with McGregor delivering 

one of his fabled end sprints 

at the end of the first stage to 

secure the overnight lead. 

With the duo still inseparable 

with less than a kilometre to go, 

McGregor looked to be holding 

all the cards, as the Euro Steel 

team mates approached Wake 

Up Rapid. 

"We were together the whole 

way - a game of patience and 

waiting for the other person to 

make a mistake," said Birkett 

afterwards. 

"About 600 metres from the 

finish I managed to come past 

Hank (McGregor) going into 

Wake Up Rapid, and then held 

him off after he made a few 

attempts to come past me. I 

managed to hang onto it to the 

finish!" he said. 

After being comfortably 

beaten in the end sprint at the 

end of the first stage, Birkett 

said that it looked like the writing 

was on the wall. 

He chalked up the win to 

luck, which seems to have 

favoured him during his four 

title domination of this popular 

race through the foothills of the 

Southern Drakensberg. 

"Something seems to happen 

in my favour every year 

just before the finish," mused 

Birkett. 

He was cautious about reading 

too much into the victory 

when looking at form for 

the FNB Dusi, now less than a 

month away. 

"On the paddling front it is a 

confidence booster, but I know 

that the running throws a whole 

new aspect into it, so it is something 

that I am not too sure 

about," said the Pietermaritzburg 

based star. 

Owen Gandar repeated his 

third placed that stunned the 

race last year, proving that his 

giant killing effort in 2016 was 

no flash-in-the-pan. 

Junior Hamish Lovemore, 

going into his matric year 

at Hilton College, provided 

another standout result by finishing 

fourth overall. 

In the women's race Abby 

Solms became the most decorated 

paddler in the race's 24 

year history by becoming the 

first athlete to win seven titles. 

Starting the tough 39km final 

stage with over two minutes on 

Olympic ace Bridgitte Hartley, 

she managed to hold her off 

on the long flat stretches on the 

long final stage that she feared 

would be where Hartley would 

attack her. 

"I was under serious pressure 

from Bridgitte, and the splits I 

was getting stayed at around a 

lead of 3 minutes and 20 seconds. 

That only changed when 

she took a swim in one of the 

last big rapids," said Solms. 

"I haven't had to paddle as 

hard as that for a long time," 

she added. 

While many top paddlers 

tend to regard the N3T Drak as 

a stepping stone in their Dusi 

campaigns, Solms took a different 

view, and prioritised the 

Drak. 

She was also placed under 

extra pressure with the news 

that she was poised to become 

the most successful athlete ever 

in the history of the race if she 

pulled off a seventh win. 

"That definitely played on 

my mind before the race and 

basically only after I had shot 

Heaven and Hell Rapid that I 

could relax and take it all in. 

"I think it is fantastic that 

I have been able to get to this 

point as woman. The men tend 

to get all the attention, and their 

race is clearly more competitive 

in many years. But this year the 

women's field was really exciting," 

said Solms. 

Hartley wrapped up an 

impressive second, despite her 

late capsize, while an nervous 

Jenna Ward raced relentlessly to 

keep a large bunch of talented 

chasing women off her rudder. 

Kyeta Purchase won the 

Under 23 title while Christie 

Mackenzie took the junior girls 

spoils. 

The race was well supported 

by the paddling community, 

bucking a trend of falling race 

entries at major multi-day races. 

Kirsten Oliver became the 

fourth person to join the Super 

Trout club after completing her 

twentieth Drak on a day notable 

for the absence of Owen Hemmingway, 

who before this race, 

was the only paddler to have 

finished ever single edition of 

this race. He was unable to get 

back from overseas business 

commitments in time to take 

part in the race this year.
