SEC. 11. SPIRITUAL PURITY IS A FACTOR. (1) The mind must been rapport with the truth to<br />

be received. (2) Yet even low-minded persons may learn many things about the<br />

Bible. (3) But the gross mind will not apprehend the pure teachings of the Spirit of<br />

God. Men may hear, and not understand; and in answer to the carnal wish God may<br />

send strong delusion, and the god of this world may blind the eyes of the unbelieving.<br />

Men may fall too low for repentance. (4) Every degree in depravity increases the<br />

difficulty of receiving and knowing the truth (1. Cor. ii. 14). 17<br />

SEC. 12. A CORRECT TRANSLATION WOULD CONDUCE TOWARDS A RELIABLE EXEGESIS.<br />

(1) Words anglicised, transferred, but not translated. (2) Wrong translations retained.<br />

(3) Many words have become obsolete. (4) Others have entirely changed their<br />

meaning. 24<br />

SEC. 13. A GENERAL AND THOROUGH EDUCATION NEEDED. (1) This is not all that is<br />

required. (2) Learning is helpful, and never injurious. (3) The mental drill aids the<br />

power to think. (4) A knowledge of one's own language of first importance. (5) An<br />

acquaintance with the original language will greatly assist. (6) A thorough drill in logic<br />

is valuable. (7) Knowledge of contemporaneous history. (8) Familiarity with Bible<br />

lands. By careful study the Bible can be as easily understood as any work of man on<br />

the subject. (9) The customs of the times should be studied. 27<br />

SEC. 14. WE SHOULD EXPECT TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE. The opposite of this view has<br />

the thought of the Catholic Church. (2) Protestants have also been culpable. (3) The<br />
