We are dedicated to the support, promotion, and development of the cultural community of Nanaimo and District. Our membership includes businesses, organizations and individuals from a diverse variety of arts genres and we foster artistic excellence through arts programming with local professional and emerging artists. An annual meeting must be held each year for compliance with provincial laws regarding non-profit charitable organizations. Please plan to be there. The NAC is your arts organization and needs your participation. The board is small and therefore cannot do all the work that needs to be done. Our manager’s hours are limited due to financial restraints. While we have applied for more funding to allow us to increase the manager’s hours, we have not yet received the funding grant. Even with increased managers’ hours, the NAC is considered by funders to be a “community based organization” which means that the majority of activities are to be run by volunteers. Therefore, we need your help. The board has worked hard this year to develop job descriptions for the board positions and the subcommittee structures. There are also areas where you can help in a one-off event if you cannot serve on a committee. Please consider some area where you can help and contact Sarah. Elsewhere in this issue of the Umbrella, you will find notices of coming events. I hope you will be able to participate. NAC 2 Dimensional Visual Artists are invited to bring their HANGING READY work for jurying and hanging between 10:00 and 11:00 am to the Port Theatre Lobby on Thursday, October 18. Those with art currently hanging are asked to pick up their pieces during that time or make other arrangements ahead of time.
