World Paint Out Day Event:
Heritage Paint Out Shoot Out
Bringing Heritage to Life - September 15
How exciting that our Heritage
Paint Out Shoot Out event is part of
World Paint Out Day - we will be joining
artists who will be participating in plein
air events all over the world!
Heritage Paint Out Shoot Out is
an annual collaboration with the
Nanaimo Community Heritage Commission and the
Nanaimo Museum where painters and photographers
gather at 10:00 am at the Museum to randomly draw their
Heritage Site. After spending the day bringing their site to
life in their artwork they will return to the museum by 3:00
where the work will be judged in two categories: Painting
(Dan Gray) and Photography (Bill Lyons).
This contest is open to all community members and
winners receive cash prizes as well as the opportunity to
exhibit their work in October in the NAC Gallery. Entrants
also have the opportunity to win two tickets to any Spotlight
Event donated by the Port Theatre and a Fred Peters prize
bag donated by the Nanaimo Museum. Entries for NAC members
are $8 and non NAC members $10

Mandatory Reading for NAC
Members
One of NAC’s strengths is its members - their dedication and
loyalty are over the past forty five years have been second to none.
This is one of the main reasons NAC has survived the past several
years of cuts.
However (you knew there was a “but” coming didn’t you),
many of our long term members are ready to pass the reins on to
new members. If you have ideas for NAC - whether for the Gallery
or other programs - SPEAK UP and get involved. NAC is a community
based organization, this means that our programs are run by
volunteers. One half time staff position is not enough to create
new and current programming.
The Board and other interested NAC members have spent
some time recently developing Terms of Reference for a variety of
committees and now we need people to help fill these committees.
The more people who volunteer, the less work for everyone. The
following are areas that NAC needs volunteers in:
Committees:
Gallery - all aspects of Gallery management including but not limited
to Shows, Physical Space, Volunteers, Hanging, Jury
Program: programming events within the Gallery and the community
that reflect organizational goals
Membership: growing and maintaining membership
Community Engagement: includes marketing, promotion and fundraising
Ad-Hoc as needed to put on specific events such as a Volunteer
Recognition event or Artes de Carnivale
Board - to advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, assist with
leadership and general promotion of the Nanaimo Arts Council
Positions:
Historian - to keep NAC archives up to date and accessible
Member Database Manager - to keep Access database up to date
and produce reports and member lists
Webmaster - to keep our website fresh and relevant

“Celebrating NAC”
This is a great opportunity to check out some of NAC’s successes
both past and recent. There will be a screening of the 2011 VI
Short Film Festival Best Film “What He Left You” by Brady Cackler,
a chance to read the winning entries from the Short Fiction
Contest 2012 and see winning artwork from various Showcases.
In addition volunteers have been working on our scrapbooks
which are an amazing collection. You could also win one of two
pairs of tickets to the Global Film Festival.
