A Jury Decision is the Correct Decision 

A few days ago, a media 

reporter called to talk with 

me about the recent jury 

trial in which Mr. Brandon 

Kilgore was tried on several 

charges arising out of an incident 

that occurred in July 

of 2016. One of the charges 

was Malicious Harassment,

talk about the jury decision. 

She wanted to know 

if I would comment on why 

the jury convicted on the assault 

charge but not on the 

burglary or the hate crime 

charge. She also wanted to 

know if I agreed with the jury

I listened to her questions 

but could not gather much 

about the story line she was 

pursuing. Experience tells 

me the media writers often 

have an agenda and sometimes 

they look for conflict. 

Some will use just a portion 

what you say to slant the story 

to fit their agenda, but I could 

not tell about this lady. She 

was professional, not revealing 

much to me, only asking 

questions. 

I told her I could not comment 

on what might have 

happened in the jury room. 

I also told her that it did not 

matter what I thought the evidence 

proved. She asked me 

if I thought it was the correct 

decision. When I told her 

that I believed the jury decision 

was correct, she wanted 

me to explain. I said it was 

correct because a jury made 

it. I told her that I brought

the charge because there was 

probable cause for it, but that 

proof beyond a reasonable 

doubt was for the jury to decide. 

That is the way the system 

works and was supposed 

to work and I agree with it. 

I think that if you believe 

in the system, then you must 

believe in the results. I believe 

in the jury system. I 

know the system has faults 

and weaknesses and I have 

been on both sides. Yet, in 

spite of it’s problems, I think 

the truth is best discovered 

(and the best truth) by the 

careful judgment and decision 

of unbiased people guided 

in the law by an impartial 

judge. 

That is what we have. 

That is what happened. 

In this case, the jury listened 

to all the evidence that 

the judge ruled they should 

be able to hear. The jury 

heard from and evaluated the 

believability of the witnesses. 

They examined the evidence.

I am not sure the reporter 

understood what I was trying 

to say, or whether she 

wanted to hear what I was 

saying or if even if she was 

willing to hear or is willing to 

understand. All that depends 

on what angle she wanted to 

write about. I will just wait 

and see what she does with 

what I said.

Burn ban continues in 

Kittitas County; bans 

start in Okanogan, 

Ferry, Stevens and 

Pend Oreille counties 

UNION GAP – Worsening air 

quality conditions in North Central 

Washington are prompting Stage 1 

burn bans to be added for Okanogan, 

Ferry, Stevens and Pend 

Oreille counties, and an existing 

ban to extend in Kittitas County 

over the weekend and through the 

Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. 

The new burn bans will start at 

10 a.m. Friday and all will continue 

through noon on Tuesday, when 

conditions will be re-evaluated, 

according to the Washington Department 

of Ecology. Light winds 

and strong inversions in the region 

mean air pollution may reach unhealthy 

levels. 

Under a Stage 1 ban, all outdoor 

burning is prohibited, including 

residential, agricultural and forest 

burning. Use of uncertified wood 

stoves, fireplaces, inserts, and 

other uncertified wood-burning devices 

is prohibited unless they are 

a home’s only adequate source of 

heat. Certified wood stoves, pellet 

stoves and other certified woodburning 

devices are allowed.

Annual Gala Celebrates 

the Farm to Food Pantry 

Purchase Program 

When local food banks need healthy produce for 

families, why not find a way to buy it fresh from local 

farmers? 

The Northeast Washington Hunger Coalition has 

developed a new model of micro-scale pickup and 

delivery that works to stabilize emergency food distribution 

while economically supporting local farmers. 

Freshly picked produce is placed into one of our 

two trailers, chilled between 36 and 40 degrees and 

held at that temperature until it’s delivered to food 

pantries. Last year more than 17,200 of fresh fruits 

and vegetables were delivered using these innovative 

new CoolPup Trailers. 

Join us at the 3rd Annual N.E.W. Hunger Coalition 

“Local Farm Fresh Food” Gala Dinner on February 

11, 2017 at the Colville Ag Trade Center, 17 W. 

Astor, Colville. The doors will open at 4:30 pm for 

a social hour, preview silent auction and Valentinethemed 

dessert items. Event tickets are $25 and include 

dinner featuring prime rib and produce grown 

by local farmers. 

“Our new micro-scale model of pickup and delivery 

combined with the power of your donations 

enables us to buy produce from local farmers and deliver 

it to all fifteen food banks in our region,” states 

project coordinator Nils Johnson. All donations and 

gifts from the 2017 Gala will go directly to pay for 

filling food banks refrigerators with trailer loads of 

fresh produce from local farmers, orchardists, and 

generous community members with backyard gardens. 

Fifteen food banks and nine community partners 

in the tri-county area make up the membership of the 

NEW Hunger Coalition. We exist to be more proficient, 

coordinate access to healthy foods, and build 

connections to resources. Increased food security 

from our work leads to better students, more stable 

families, and healthier senior citizens. We are also 

working to provide healthy eating education with 

cooking and food preservation classes, as well as developing 

food production capacity from community 

gardens. 

We will also be celebrating three awards received 

from Second Harvest for Volunteerism, Innovation 

and Public Relations.

Report from the Greater Springdale Loon Lake Chamber of Commerce 

The greater Springdale Loon Lake Chamber of 

Commerce met January 5 at the Springdale Fire 

Station. 11 People were present. Unfortunately several 

were absent due to problems related to our extreme 

cold weather. 

Tammy Wright of Springdale Together on Prevention 

shared that they had their first board meeting 

for the reorganized program. They are looking 

for a new coordinator. It is a bachelor level position 

and will answer to the board of directors. This 

position will be an employee of Rural Resources. 

Funding for the program comes primarily from 

grants and is managed by Rural Resources. The 

next Strengthening families program begins on Feb 

13th. It runs from 5:30 -8:00 and will be held at the 

Springdale Community church. Dinner and childcare 

is free. Tammy emphasized that these classes 

are to give people new ideas. It is an ongoing education 

opportunity to learn new parenting styles. If 

you are having trouble with your kids would like to 

attend for the first time so you can figure out what to 

do, contact Sinay Butler at 509-499-4033 for more 

information. The next meeting for the program 

management will be held January 17th at 3:30 at the 

Springdale church. It would be a great opportunity 

to get involved in a program that works to keep kids 

drug and alcohol free. Kevin Jacka, superintendent 

of Springdale schools will give a presentation on 

the importance of the upcoming Levy. 

Kevin Jacka described the levy as a continuation 

levy. We will vote February 14. It will last for four 

years and is for maintenance and operations. It is 

not a new tax, it only helps to support and maintain 

the district’s current educational programs and activities 

which are not funded through State and/or 

Federal funds. And, he added, strong schools make 

for strong communities. Kevin also gave us an update 

on the “Welcome to Springdale” signs. Due 

to the winter break, the Vocational instructor has 

just gotten started on design ideas. They will be 

presented next meeting. Kevin also shared that the 

school is working with Verizon to establish WIFI 

hotspots. 

Sarah English, the new manager at the Loon 

Lake Library, reported they are starting a morning 

story time program for children as well as an adult 

coloring club. Both programs will start in February.

Mike Bucy, chief of Stevens county Fire district 

1 reported that the district had a very busy year. 

He has been doing a lot of work to try to keep the 

construction of the new fire stations within the budget 

allowed by taxpayers. So the district has now 

turned to a local contractor. Now they will break 

ground late summer. 

Dawn Gronlund, representing Hearts and Horses, 

reported that the cocoa mug sales fundraiser did 

very well. There were a number of scholarship applications 

that were on hold, so the money brought 

in by this fundraiser was very important. The next 

fundraiser is going to be a breakfast gathering with 

video and spoken presentations of what the program 

has done to help individuals achieve success in life 

and overcome handicaps and mental and emotional 

problems. It is tentatively planned for early may. 

Dawn also reported that Legacy Farm and Stable 

will be providing the horses for a seminar at Mount 

Spokane Veterinary. This is an opportunity for 

horse owners to understand health maintenance 

needs and what the vet can do to help your horse. 

This will be held April 8. They also plan to field a 

team to participate in the outhouse race at the Deer 

Park Winter Fest. These kids are athletes and can 

run with the best of them. 

This is time to renew your Chamber of Commerce 

membership. It is only $30.00 and for that 

you get networking with other members, free 

chamber website advertising, business of the month 

exposure, as well as mention in local newspapers 

when you have an event or breaking news to report 

that is of interest to the community. There are also 

many ongoing educational opportunities provided 

by the Chamber throughout the year that will help 

you learn better how to market your business. If

Facebook page. Jessica Varang, chamber secretary 

wants everyone to check out the great work she has 

done on these sites. The Chamber is also developing 

brochures that will be used to promote our area. 

There was a discussion on the effect on local 

businesses of the new minimum wage. Some have 

had to lay people off. This is, unfortunately, one of 

the unintended consequences of this new law. 

Sue Cox of Hotza Motza Pizza reported seeing a 

number of new customers from out of the area this 

last month, even with shortened winter hours. She 

feels Chamber efforts are helping get the word out 

about this very good pizza restaurant. 

There was discussion on the computer center. 

It was established with grant money and when the 

grant ran out, the center foundered. The building is 

now available for lease. Many voiced the opinion 

that they’d like to see a daycare established there 

to support families who would like to get a job in 

Deer Park or Spokane. This would be a real plus

condo clubhouse when Meyer 

loses $500 on a single hand, 

clutches his chest, and drops 

dead at the table. 

Showing respect for 

their fallen comrade, the other 

five continue playing, but 

standing up. 

At the end of the 

game, Finklestein looks 

around and asks, "So, who's 

gonna tell his vife?" 

They cut the cards. 

Goldberg picks the low card 

and has to carry the news. 

They tell him to be 

discreet, be gentle, don't make 

a bad situation any worse. 

"Discreet? I'm the 

most discreet person you'll 

ever meet. Discretion is

and enter the Kingdom of 

Heaven." 

St. Peter next greets 

the minister saying, 

"Take this cotton 

robe and wooden staff 

and enter the Kingdom of 

Heaven." 

"Just a minute," says 

the minister. "That man was a 

taxi driver! He gets a silken 

robe and golden staff while I 

get a cotton robe and wooden 

staff. How can this be?" 

"Up here, we work 

by results," says St. Peter. 

"While you preached, people 

slept; while he drove, people 

prayed." 

The children were 

lined up in the cafeteria 

of a Catholic elementary 

school for lunch. At the head 

of the table was a large tray 

of apples. A nun lettered 

a note and posted it on 

the apple tray: "Take only 

ONE. God is watching." 

Moving along the 

lunch line, at the other end 

was a large tray of chocolate 

chip cookies. A girl wrote a 

note, which she put next to 

the tray of cookies, "Take all 

you want. God is watching 

the apples." 

For our Pastor's 

50th Birthday, the 

congregation decided to give 

him a new suit. 

He was so touched 

by the gift that the following 

Sunday he stood before 

everyone and, with tears in 

his eyes, announced, "Today 

I am preaching to you in my 

birthday suit." 

A pastor’s wife was 

preparing pancakes for her 

young sons. The boys began 

to argue over who would 

get the first pancake. Their 

Mother saw the opportunity 

for a moral lesson. If Jesus 

were sitting here, He would 

say, "Let my brother have 

the first pancake. I can wait." 

The oldest boy turned to his 

younger brother and said, 

"You be Jesus." 

A preacher was 

completing a temperance 

sermon. With great 

expression he said, "If I had 

all the beer in the world, I'd 

take it and throw it into the 

river!" 

The congregation 

nodded their approval. 

With even greater 

emphasis he added, "And if I 

had all the wine in the world, 

I'd take it and throw it into the 

river, too!" 

The people clapped 

and were saying "Amen." 

And then, finally, he 

concluded, "And if I had all the 

whiskey in the world, I'd take 

it and throw it into the river!" 

As he sat down, 

the song leader then stood 

up quite cautiously and 

announced, "For our closing 

song, let us sing Hymn #365: 

"Shall We Gather at the 

River." 

Q: What happens to a frog's

A: It gets toad away.

when he bought lipstick?
