An interview with
Star of the Week
Star of the Week Lucy W (9LST) has received the
award for trying her hardest in lessons and
contributing as much as she can. It has also been
noticed how much she helps other people in her
subjects too. Speaking to Lucy, she said that she
feels very proud to have been awarded Star of the
Week, and is happy to be able to represent the
school in a positive way. A letter was sent home to
congratulate her and let her parents know how hard
she has been working. She feels that the best
things about Helsby High School are the people;
and the wide range of clubs and activities that
students can get involved in. Lucy is part of the
Helsby High Girls football team and plays with
students from her year, as well as year 8 and year
10. The team recently played a tournament which
has secured them a place in the final which takes
place in March…we wish them the best of luck!

British Values: Thought for the Week
Keep calm even if things go
wrong
Things don’t always go right, that’s just a
fact of life. Keeping calm even when things
are going wrong helps to get them sorted.
Leg warmers are being purchased and Lycra of every
colour is being sported by our dance troop because
it isn’t long until FAME hits our hall! Helsby High is
renowned for their professionalism when performing and
producing their Musical performances and particularly enjoyed the
success of Our House where they were lucky enough to have the writer
Tim Firth visit and watch their final performance.
This year’s show is set to be another success, showcasing the students’ dance, acting
and musical ability. Students from Years 7-13 auditioned to be part of the show and have secured
roles based on their talent, confidence and ‘hard work’ in the audition process. The show has some
very complex and challenging dances within it and ex-student Lorna McAvoy has been helping
competent dance students such as Skye M, Issy D, Tara J and Olivia G to choreograph the iconic
numbers in the show.
Although the musical deals with difficult issues there are some hilarious moments where we really
see the comic ability and timing of our students. Jen M and Jonny J play the larger than life members
of Schlomo’s Rock Band and are able to reduce the audience to hysterics with their close relationship.
The show highlights the issues surrounding young love and our cast have ‘really’ got to know each
other as the play features 3 kisses (there were lots of giggles), luckily directors Mrs Cross and Miss
Reynolds know all the tricks of the stage to save anyone’s embarrassment without changing the
storylines. Our young couples are Serena and Nick (played by Ellen S and Dan H) Iris and Tyreece
(played by Holly D and Isaac R) and the afore mentioned Schlomo and Carmen.
Some of our cast have enjoyed playing the teachers of PA which is the Performing Arts school they all
attend “we are really getting an insight to what it feels like to be a teacher!” said Georgia F who plays
Mrs Sherman and Ellie H who plays a female version of Mr Myers.

Exam Stress
Exams, Tests, Assessments. We all have them and unfortunately
Each fortnight we will focus on a
different student issue – email
news@helsbyhigh.org.uk if there
are any issues you would like
more information about.
they’re a part of school life that will never go away, but you don’t have to face them alone! We
might not have that much choice over whether or not we actually do exams, but there are
definitely things we can do to help deal with the stress we're feeling.
Simple Steps to Success
Plan: You’ve probably heard it a million times before, but planning ahead is essential! If you’re
struggling then try the website “get revising” where you can have a timetable planned for you.
Relax: Exams don’t mean life or death, so make sure you remember to do the things you love to
relax and de-stress! It’s ok to have some fun and meet up with friends to take a break.
Health: A HUGE part of handling your exams like a pro means keeping healthy! So remember to
keep hydrated, water is your best friend to keep focused and energised! Also, try to get about 8
hours sleep a night. Did you know approximately 85% of teenagers don’t get enough sleep?
Chat: Don’t stress out alone, stress means problems (sometimes even encouraging acne!) and noone
wants that, so have a chat with people you feel comfortable with. Ask your parents to be
considerate and cut back on any pressures while you deal with exams. Or, talk to a teacher at
school because there’s lots they can do to help.
Motivate: Keep motivated and don’t give up. You and your friends are different so don’t compare
your revision, keep to your own goals, different people need different schedules.
At the end of the day, exams are important but they are not the end of the world. So follow the
steps and keep going – good luck! (Charlotte C)
So far, we have raised an amazing £887 for our charity of the
year, which is Cancer research UK. However, if you think
there are other charities you would like to raise money for
then here is your chance!
Amazing opportunity:
There are three lots of £400 up for grabs, for a charity or
organisation of your choice. All you have to do is write a ‘bid’
(an argument) telling the fundraising team why you think
your chosen charity deserve the money. You can enter as an
individual, in a group, or as a form and you can get more
information about this from Mrs Ford in the Library.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
