Center, Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>Fulham</strong> Co., Inc., supplier of light<strong>in</strong>g and LED<br />

components, will be speak<strong>in</strong>g to light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry professionals and <strong>in</strong>fluencers about the need <strong>for</strong> true<br />

<strong>in</strong>teroperability standards as the light<strong>in</strong>g market embraces smart light<strong>in</strong>g. Sharer's present<strong>at</strong>ion entitled<br />

"<strong>Standards</strong> are Mean<strong>in</strong>gless (without <strong>Interoperability</strong>)" is scheduled <strong>for</strong> Thursday, March 2.<br />

As Sharer notes, the smart light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry lags far beh<strong>in</strong>d other <strong>in</strong>dustries when it comes to commonly accepted<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ions standards to <strong>for</strong> on/off, dimm<strong>in</strong>g, color tun<strong>in</strong>g, remote monitor<strong>in</strong>g, task tun<strong>in</strong>g, remote and<br />

wireless controls, system alerts, and energy usage report<strong>in</strong>g. In other <strong>in</strong>dustries, accepted, open standards have<br />

had a dram<strong>at</strong>ic positive effect on market growth. Consider, <strong>for</strong> example, the impact of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, both<br />

well-documented and well-understood standards th<strong>at</strong> assure product comp<strong>at</strong>ibility and <strong>in</strong>teroperability. <strong><strong>Light</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

control standards, such as ZigBee, DALI (the Digital Addressable <strong><strong>Light</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> Interface), and Thread are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more commonplace but don't guarantee end users can buy light<strong>in</strong>g components from multiple vendors and<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>e them with a common control system. As a result, <strong>in</strong>teroperability is only assured if you standardize on a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle vendor.<br />

"LED systems can be controlled <strong>in</strong> any number of ways, but there is no standardized means of mix<strong>in</strong>g vendors,"<br />

Sharer said. "End users want to cre<strong>at</strong>e multivendor light<strong>in</strong>g systems th<strong>at</strong> use a common language, but as yet<br />

there are no established standards th<strong>at</strong> guarantee comp<strong>at</strong>ibility <strong>for</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g control."<br />

The need <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>teroperable light<strong>in</strong>g control systems is becom<strong>in</strong>g more urgent with the grow<strong>in</strong>g adoption of rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ions and standards. For example, the Internet of Th<strong>in</strong>gs (IoT) is enabl<strong>in</strong>g IP-based control of networked<br />

devices and components. In turn, IoT is driv<strong>in</strong>g demand <strong>for</strong> centralized network control of devices, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

light<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>for</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ions such as autom<strong>at</strong>ed build<strong>in</strong>g management. Wireless network<strong>in</strong>g standards such as<br />

802.11ac are be<strong>in</strong>g adopted <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>-home systems management, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g home security, clim<strong>at</strong>e control, and<br />

remote light<strong>in</strong>g control. Power over Ethernet (PoE) also is becom<strong>in</strong>g popular <strong>for</strong> new construction and<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ions such as retail light<strong>in</strong>g, where light<strong>in</strong>g is frequently moved. All of these standards are well def<strong>in</strong>ed so<br />

they can be <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>to a central control system.<br />

"As smart light<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ues to evolve, <strong>in</strong>teroperability of controls has become more important," said Sharer. "The<br />

light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry is go<strong>in</strong>g to see more demand <strong>for</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g standards-compliance, <strong>in</strong>teroperability test<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

certific<strong>at</strong>ion procedures <strong>for</strong> both new and retrofit products. And customers are go<strong>in</strong>g to shop <strong>for</strong> standardscertified<br />

products th<strong>at</strong> are guaranteed to be comp<strong>at</strong>ible with new smart light<strong>in</strong>g pl<strong>at</strong><strong>for</strong>ms. Those light<strong>in</strong>g vendors<br />

th<strong>at</strong> will prosper <strong>in</strong> the future are the ones th<strong>at</strong> embrace standards and promote product <strong>in</strong>teroperability."<br />
