FROM THE
Director
Welcome to the 2016 HealthPartners Institute/
Regions Hospital Emergency Medicine
Residency Program’s Annual Report! In addition
to highlighting many aspects of our
program, we wanted to feature our work on
resident wellness.
What is resident wellness you may wonder? Is it
possible to have the word ‘resident’ and the word
‘wellness’ in the same sentence? Great questions.
Dictionary.com defines wellness as ‘the quality or state
of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the
result of deliberate effort’. Other definitions note that
wellness is more about thriving than simply surviving.
Our goal as a program is to work with the residents on
not only striving for more wellness during their residency
journey, but really understanding and incorporating
wellness and resiliency as a core foundation of a great,
long career in Emergency Medicine.
How are we doing this—by incorporating key topics in
our conference curriculum (the full range from burnout
and sleep deprivation to gratitude and happiness),
having a Chief Resident with wellness in their job
description, having a wellness committee and wellness
activities, having good discussions about wellness as
CULLEN HEGARTY, MD
Program Director
a focus area with residency meetings, and participating
in national efforts such as the Academic Life in
Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) Wellness Think Tank.
Even though we are ‘all in’ on being committed to
focusing on this important area of residency training,
we still have a lot to learn and look forward to growing
more in this area over the next few years.
As we reflect back on 2016, we were fortunate to match
another outstanding class of humanistic residents
featured in this report. We are grateful for the support
of our many residency partners and look forward to
training the emergency physicians of the future! We
are proud of our residents, faculty and alumni and
hope you enjoy our annual update from St. Paul!
Department Head Update
There are so many exciting opportunities we can
accomplish with teamwork. Regions Hospital Emergency
Medicine Department works as a diverse
team. In 2016 our busy emergency department
concentrated on patient experience, patient flow,
quality, work place safety, education, research
and resiliency. We concentrate on including emergency
department residents, department staff and
research interns on projects. One of many highlights
this year was accepting the Minnesota
Hospital Association’s 2016 Innovation of the Year
in Patient Care Award for our “Street to Treat Stroke
Initiative” led by Drs. Jackie Kelly (‘17), Ryan Bourdon
(‘14), and Steve Stanfield.
Our team of educators is heavily involved with teaching
medical students from the University of Minnesota.
This year Drs. Brad Gordon (‘02) and Aaron Burnett
(‘10) were recognized for the many years of academic
progress and were promoted to Associate Professor.
Dr. Jessie Nelson (‘04) has accepted a role to lead
an education think tank for research development at
the University of Minnesota.
Together as a team we influence, lead, provide, and
care for each other and the patients we serve. The
future of emergency care and training is strong at
Regions Hospital.
Regions toxicology team continues to lead the
scientific community in innovative ideas and strategy
to assist in drug induced shock. Supported by both
internal and external grant support, Dr. Kate Katzung
(‘12), residency and fellowship grad, was recognized
for Best Platform Presentation at the 2016 American
College of Medical Toxicology meeting.
Residents
CHIEF RESIDENTS
David Benjamin, MD, Jackie Kelly, MD, Alan Sazama, MD
2016-2017 Chief Residents
Happy new year! We are excited to share with you
some of the aspects of our program that continue
to make it a great place to train.
We serve a unique blend of privately insured and
under-served patients within the St. Paul metropolitan
area and western Wisconsin. As a Level I
Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, Heart Center,
Stroke Center and Regional Burn Center,
our hospital and emergency department provide
quality and specialized care to a large community.
Our didactic education provides us with the opportunity
to not only review key core content
important for the practice of emergency medicine,
but also to discuss cutting edge research in
our field through journal club and our recently
developed “Regions: RAP” hour where we delve
into the growing free open access medical education
community (FOAMed) to learn where to
find new content and how to critically appraise
and apply it.
Wellness has been a focus over the past year.
Clinical rotations continue to evolve to serve the
educational needs of our residents as well as to
promote a healthy work-life balance, e.g., traditional
6-week rotations have been split into two
3-week blocks.
Emergency medicine residents provide 365 day
coverage in the surgical ICU where seniors have
leadership responsibilities and all have exposure to
critically ill patients and opportunities to enhance
procedural skills. This is a unique opportunity
to work directly with our surgical and trauma
attending staff physicians, building relationships
that directly translate back to the trauma bay in
the emergency department.
PGY-1s actively manage critically ill patients
from day one of their residency, and are primarily
responsible for airway management in all medical
resuscitations in the ED. PGY-2 residents manage
the airway in all trauma patients and perform
the majority of procedures on trauma and medical
resuscitations within theED. PGY-3 residents
lead resuscitations in all medical arrests, serve as
team leader for the Trauma Team and supervise
the majority of procedures performed in the ED.
These opportunities, in combination with our
department’s high volume and acuity, provide
ample experience in caring for critically ill patients.
Wellness continues to be a priority during
shifts, as well. Our faculty are great role models
for how to provide quality care for our patients
and ourselves.
Lastly, and most importantly, a friendly and collaborative
culture is the hallmark of our program.
Residents, attending physicians, nursing
and ancillary staff have an exceptionally collegial
relationship. Shifts are fun and feedback is supportive.
Residents get together for social events
that include all ED staff; past gatherings have included
kickball, paddle-boarding and a trip to a
Halloween haunted house. Getting to know our
colleagues both on and off shift makes working
together even more fun.
We believe that our educational curriculum, critical
care experiences, and hospital administrative
systems are unique; this combined with excellent
support from our well-respected teaching faculty
and our focus on wellness makes the Regions
Emergency Medicine Residency program a great
place train.
Sarah Baker, MD
BS - Psychology - Loyola
University
MD - Loyola University
Interests: Ultimate frisbee,
watersports and spending time
on the lake, visiting my brother in
CO for hiking and snowboarding,
checking out new breweries
in Minneapolis/St. Paul with my
hubby, hanging out with my
one-year-old nephew, and traveling! Most recently, I spent
six weeks working at a rural clinic in Bolivia and traveling/
backpacking South America.
Oliver Garrison, MD
BS - Economics - St. Olaf College
MD - University of Minnesota
Interests: True to mindset
of emergency medicine, I’m
interested in more activities than
I have time for. I love the Twin
Cities because I get the benefits
of a city (great food, music,
sports, events), but have access
to cross-country skiing, and
great outdoor running. I like music and film and I go to
a few concerts a year (preferably outdoor), and at home
when nobody’s listening I play the guitar and harmonica.
Creative projects are very fulfilling for me too, which
range from making podcasts and videos, to just working
on my car or making a picture frame for my living room.
Allison Knorzer, MD
BS - Biology - Appalachian State
University
MD - Wright State University
Interests: Playing basketball,
flag football, soccer, running,
hiking, horseback riding, snowboarding,
jump roping, being
a dog mom, baking, growing
Interests: I enjoy anything
that involves being outside
and active – running, cycling,
walking, hiking, water sports, or just hanging out by
one of the lakes. I grew up in Minnesota and am 100%
convinced we have the best summers in the country
(still trying to find something I like about winter besides
Christmas). Spending time with family and friends,
listening to music and attending concerts, beaches
and/or any body of water, mentoring youth, and dogs
bring me joy. And I really, really like to read.
Enyioma Okechukwu, MD
BS - Cellular & Molecular Biology
MD - New York Medical College
Interests: I enjoy various
outdoor activities like hiking,
and snowboarding. But being
a 3 sport athlete in high school,
I’m game for any activity that
gets me moving. I’ve always
loved reading but recently I’ve found I most enjoy online
experience blogs and think pieces. Having grown up/
gone to college in the Midwest at the University of
Michigan watching Big 10 football is Saturday tradition
during the fall months. Lastly, discovering new music/
artists and going to live shows is also a huge passion.
our favorite football and baseball
teams. I enjoy traveling across
the country to visit my extended
family and dream of doing more international travel. I
played softball and volleyball most of my life and enjoy
any activity that is outdoors. I grew up playing piano and
singing, and in medical school I was part of an a cappella
group called ‘The Smooth Obturators’.
Emergency Medicine Residency 2016 Annual Report
Spotlights
WELLNESS COMMITTEE
1. Why did you volunteer to serve on the Wellness
Committee?
AG: The committee seemed like a great way to find
new ways to not only improve and boost morale, sense
of balance, and overall wellness within our residency
program but also among the entire department. We all
have room for establishing balance both at and away
from work, and not forgetting about our wellness can
help us do that.
AS: I was elected chief resident, specifically to the
Wellness and Quality chief role. I wanted to re-form
the committee to get a diverse set of opinions and
help with planning events to boost wellness within our
residency and department.
CS: I wanted my time in residency to be as enjoyable
and well-rounded as possible and I wanted to do the
same for my fellow residents. Residency has a way of
taking over our lives – for better or worse. I set a goal
for myself that I wanted to be able to look back on these
3 years and say that I not only survived and became a
great physician but that I had a great time doing it too.
Joining the wellness committee felt like the best way to
accomplish that goal.
2. Tell us about Committee activities this past year.
AG: Activities have varied quite a bit, which has made
for great involvement within the department and developing
relationships on a multidisciplinary basis. Events
have included community service projects at Ronald
McDonald House and Union Gospel Mission.
AS: We’ve made a concentrated effort to include all
disciplines in the department in a wide range of
activities including paddle boarding, kickball, movie
nights, and staff picnics/parties.
CS: We as a committee knew from the outset that we
wanted to plan diverse activities and try and be as
inclusive as possible. Looking back over the last year
I think it’s safe to say that we’ve accomplished our
goal and then some!
Callie Schnitker, Alan Sazama, Allie Grace;
not pictured: Jenni Bennett
3. What was the biggest surprise you had on this
committee?
AG: The interest from the department as a whole
in getting together for activities and to get to know
everyone has been a pleasant surprise. Even already
I have noticed a greater sense of camaraderie overall
which I believe is in large part attributable to these
events.
AS: I’ve been surprised by the willingness of the entire
department to spend time together outside of work.
Frequently on shift techs, coordinators, and nurses ask
me when the next wellness activity is going to be.
CS: The biggest surprise has been how enthusiastic
everyone in the department has been to participate in
these activities. I was expecting to have good turn out
from the residents and maybe some of the younger
nurses and ancillary staff but everyone, of all ages and
titles, has gotten behind these wellness events. We’ve
even had great turn out from people outside the department,
people bringing significant others, spouses and
children to these events – it’s been really great to see.
4. What do you think you’ll take with you when you
graduate?
AG: The Wellness Committee ideas and events have
really highlighted the benefit of getting to know
and enjoy your team. Teamwork in the Emergency
Department is crucial, so developing relationships will
improve patient care but also enjoyment and satisfaction
both at and away from work.
AS: This year has been great for department wellness.
I feel like my relationships with the support staff in our
department have grown not only because of the time
spent working here for the past 3 years but also due
to the time spent together outside of work. We work
better together taking care of patients in the ED
because we’re friends outside of work and trust each
other. Next year at my job in South Dakota I look
forward to developing similar camaraderie with the ED
staff because I do feel it has benefited patient care here.
CS: There are a lot of things that I’ll take from this
experience, but the biggest one is the importance of
connecting with your co-workers on a personal level.
I feel like there has been a huge change in the spirit
in the department over the last year and I credit a lot
of that to the wellness activities. It makes even the
hardest cases and shifts that much more enjoyable.
Emergency Medicine Residency 2016 Annual Report
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Peter Baggenstos, MD
BJORN WESTGARD, MD, MA
I really appreciate the
attention to both mission
and margin; both need to be
present for an organization
to be effective. The organizational
culture at Regions also
puts a premium on providers
of different classifications
and specialties working well
together, which makes life
pleasant and is certainly
not present everywhere in
healthcare.
You did not take the standard/traditional route to becoming an ER
doctor. Talk us through your educational journey, and describe all of
the various roles that you currently have. I studied anthropology prior to
medicine as part of a dual degree program at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, and I did fieldwork in Senegal in West Africa examining
the historical overlap between systems of healthcare and governance in
both traditional and allopathic medicine. In medical school, I gravitated
towards emergency medicine because of my personality and because of
all the social, political, and economic issues in the emergency department.
In training at Hennepin County Medical Center, I got exposure to and
experience with researching food and housing insecurity, and I continued
that focus on health disparities when I came to HealthPartners. I also got
interested and fellowship-trained in Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine
because of its unique history and practice and unknown but robust
evidence base. I’m currently a staff emergency physician at Regions and
in the HP Valley Community Hospitals, I practice hyperbaric medicine, and
I work on research and quality improvement in both capacities. I sit on the
HealthPartners Institutional Review Board and Regions Hospital’s Equitable
Care Committee and work with non-profit organizations on healthcare
related issues in the community.
What do you enjoy best about working at Regions? Regions serves a
very diverse population of patients but benefits from the efficient business
operations HealthPartners. I really appreciate the attention to both mission
and margin; both need to be present for an organization to be effective.
The organizational culture at Regions also puts a premium on providers of
different classifications and specialties working well together, which makes
life pleasant and is certainly not present everywhere in healthcare. Though
our practice is incredibly diverse and challenging, most of the time we have
the right resources and colleagues available to provide exceptional care
for patients.
Tell us about your current research projects. My current primary research
study focuses on acculturation, social capital, and cardiometabolic disease
in the Somali community funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute through HP and involves collaborators in the Somali community
and across the metro. I’ve also concentrated on public health disparities
that lead to ED visits and unreimbursed care, like neighborhood gaps
in healthy food availability or access to care, missed appointments, and
homelessness. I’ve also looked at clinical gaps, like disparities in pain
control and readmissions or improving dental care though better tools and
clinic vouchers.
The Annual Report this year has a wellness theme. Given your various
clinical and non-clinical duties, how do you stay well? Like many
emergency physicians, I thrive on organized chaos to some degree, but
more importantly, I try to put first things first. I love up my family and friends
everyday, and I believe that “the more we get together, the happier we’ll
be,” so I try to connect with everyone, especially patients. Working stressful
shifts puts us at higher cardiovascular risk, so I also try to exercise every
other day, eat healthy on shift and off, practice the professional skill of
napping, and spend time outdoors whenever possible, preferably sailing
or skiing. Life is short, so everyday we’ve got to find the time to smile,
dance, and have faith.
Physician Assistants are an essential part of the
staffing of the Regions Hospital Emergency
Department. PAs were introduced here in 1983
and the number of PA staff has grown with the
increasing census. We currently have 21 PA full
time staff representing 11 different PA programs.
The PA staff participate in the care for patients of
all levels of acuity and are the preceptors for PA
students rotating from 10 different PA programs.
The HealthPartners Institute/Regions Hospital
EM PA Residency Program has now graduated
four classes of residents. We continue to collaborate
with the MD residency in offering an
18-month training program providing PAs the
knowledge and skills to practice with increased
competence, confidence, and job satisfaction. The
Class of 2017 began in June of 2016. This fifth
class of EM PA residents completed their orientation
and advanced life support training courses
with the EM MD Class of 2019.
The Class of 2016 was the first to complete a longitudinal
rotation at Lakeview Hospital where
they gained experience in a single provider covered
emergency department. They were thefirst
to trial an ED based orthopedics procedure
rotation, which includes shifts with plastic surgery
and with Tria Orthopedics. James Frederick (‘16)
completed an international elective rotation in
Tonga and Michael Cavanaugh (‘16) completed a
wilderness medicine rotation.
Emergency Medicine Residency 2016 Annual Report
Curriculum
Kristi Grall, MD, Rachel Dahms, MD
Assistant Residency Directors
Didactics/Simulation
This year we have “spiced” up our didactic
learning a bit at Regions in the hopes
of encouraging regular participation. We
are now in the middle of a very heated
“Conference Cup” where four teams
of faculty and residents are competing
against each other with their conference
attendance hours and speaking points.
At last count Hufflepuff was in the lead,
followed closely by Ravenclaw and
Griffindor. Sadly, Slitherin continues to
pull up behind. Check in on our Facebook
page or websites for current rankings. We
continue to be committed to innovative
education, adding cutting edge technology to
bring in nationally and internationally recognized
speakers through the use of interactive remote
meeting applications. We have developed a novel
FOAMed curriculum for learning evidence
based medicine that incorporates instructional
technology media including podcasts, blogs,
social media and podcasts, which has become a
favored alternative to journal club. We incorporate
monthly small group/simulation conference
days, using simulation or case-based materials as
a basis of active learning. Our weekly ‘critical
case’ conference continues to be our signature
conference, using real-life cases for discussion,
inviting consultants to provide insight where
appropriate. Once per month our critical cases
have a pediatric focus, with participation by our
Peds-EM fellows and faculty.
Other conference time is dedicated to core content,
journal club, QI, joint collaborative conferences
with other departments, and our monthly
grand rounds series. Other innovative ideas we’ve
incorporated, include adding discussions of relevant
podcasts to critical cases, using games to
make core topics enjoyable, and live chats with
our alumni throughout the US and even Australia.
Procedural Training & Competency
Procedural education is based on the need to enter
future practice comfortable and competent in
performing a broad variety of invasive and noninvasive
procedures. Procedural competency matters
the most in procedures that are complex, high
risk, and must be performed immediately to reduce
the risk to life or limb.
Historically, most procedural exposure happens
at the patient’s bedside under faculty supervision.
The emergency department, intensive care units,
and off-service rotations provide an opportunity
for residents to become competent in performing
procedures in a clinical setting. Working with
different faculty in different specialties, residents
are exposed to varied techniques and approaches
to patient care. Bedside teaching also allows for
direct and immediate feedback on performance
at the bedside under the watchful eyes of faculty.
Each year, every resident completes a structured
full-day simulated procedure lab, led by EM faculty,
which provides a chance to get hands-on experience
with invasive procedures. Common procedures,
such as central line placement or epistaxis
management, are refined; residents also perform
rare and high-stakes procedures such as thoracotomy
cricothyroidotomy, pericardiocentesis, and
shoulder dystocia delivery.
18

Emergency Medicine Residency 2016 Annual Report
EMS
EM residents are introduced to the subspecialty
of pre-hospital medicine early in their intern year
with a longitudinal rotation occurring during their
integrated ED months. Residents experience prehospital
medicine by participating in patient care
with EMS providers in urban, suburban and rural
agencies, experiencing fire-based, volunteer/paid
on-call, third service, and police-paramedic EMS
delivery systems. Optional air medical exposure is
offered via Life Link III air ambulance. Residents
also spend time shadowing operators at the Ramsey
County Emergency Communications Center and
the East Metro Medical Resource Control Center
(“East Metro MRCC”), which serves as the nerve
center for on-line medical control for services under
the medical direction of Regions EMS.
Regions EMS Event Medicine
Our residents partner with our EMS providers by
providing on-site medical control for Minnesota
Wild NHL hockey games, the MN State Fair, the
Summer Set Music Festival and the Twin Cities
Marathon. Regions EMS provides on-site EMS
coverage for events at the Xcel Energy Center, CHS
Field in downtown St. Paul, and the Roy Wilkins
Auditorium.
Resident Associate EMS Medical
Directorship
Residents with a particular interest in operational
EMS may choose the Associate EMS Medical Directorship
(AMD) for their required scholarly project.
This unique program allows motivated residents to
gain an in-depth understanding of operational, administrative
and educational aspects of pre-hospital
medicine and the unique role of the EMS medical
director. Residents completing the EMS-AMD program
are uniquely positioned to competitively apply
for EMS fellowships.
2016 Associate EMS Medical Directors:
• Peter Coenen, MD (’17)
• Steven Palm, MD (’18)
• Kevin Torkelson, MD (’18)
Ultrasound
We focus on the ACEP recommended core uses
of bedside ultrasound including but not limited to
FAST, early pregnancy, AAA, cardiac, renal, biliary,
venous, soft tissue, ocular, thoracic and procedural
guidance. Education begins during the intern orientation
of the first weeks of residency and is enhanced
by using a state of the art ultrasound simulator
in our dedicated Sim Lab. We recognize that
point of care ultrasound is both a procedure (obtaining
the image) and a cognitive process (understanding
the benefits/pitfalls of ultrasound and how
to interpret the data into the clinical scenario). To
that end, we incorporated dedicated lecture time,
online resources, and reading references to emphasize
Emergency Medicine Residency 2016 Annual Report
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Peter Baggenstos, MD
What brought you to Regions for your EM residency training? I wanted
to be involved in a residency that would specifically fit my needs. I felt that
this program placed a strength in evidenced based medicine, empowered
residents to conduct research, and provided independence so that we
could each craft our own personal practice of patient care with appropriate
guidance.
Tell us about your job with EPPA at Methodist Hospital—what are your
favorite aspects of the job and the ED at Methodist? I work for the
HealthPartners system at Methodist Hospital in St Louis Park. I am currently
involved in the Emergency Medicine educational component of the
Creekside Family Practice Residency Rotation. My favorite aspects include
the diverse patient population, the integration of our patient care with the
local medical systems (improves continuity of care) and my colleagues.
PETER BAGGENSTOS, MD
My favorite aspects [of ED at
Methodist Hospital] include
the diverse patient population,
the integration of our patient
care with the local medical
systems (improves continuity
of care) and my colleagues.
Rumor has it that you did a little reality TV last year. How did you decide
to do that, and what did you learn from your experience on Survivor?
I was a contestant on Survivor filmed in Cambodia. I sent in a video and
they liked what they saw! What did I learn? Everything! Don’t take life
seriously. Reality TV is hardly real, but really entertaining.
The Annual Report this year has a wellness theme. Given all of the
excitement you’ve had in your life over the past few years, how do you
stay well? Personal wellness is an essential base for us as ED physicians.
It is mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional. I explore my own personal
wellness through travel, spending time with my new son Thatcher and
wife Yleana, and hitting the weight room. An appropriate balance of
individual time, family time, and professional time. It’s a battle we ED
practitioners will have for the rest of out lives!
Coordinators
There’s nothing better than hearing from our
grads, and we love to stay connected. We especially
like our Alumni Day Conference in September.
This year, we had a “suite” outing at Target Field.
Even though we were rained out, we had a great
time in our suite, and a visiting medical student
from Arizona got to attend the Twins make-up
game the following day. Featured speakers for
conference the following day were Emily Mason
(‘07), Heather Ellsworth (‘10) and Katie Glasrud
(‘15). We also connected with Darcy (Rumberger)
Denegre (‘13) in Colorado and Nate LaFleur (‘16)
in Texas, who shared their experiences remotely.
Jenna LeRoy (‘14) has agreed to take the lead on
development of an Alumni Association.
We attended the annual meeting of Emergency
Medicine Association of Residency Coordinators
(EMARC) in Nashville as part of the 2016 CORD
Academic Assembly and SAEM in New Orleans
Lori Barrett, Manager,
Residency & Education
Amy Koonce,
Program Coordinator
with our intern class. Dinners during SAEM and
ACEP are a great way to stay connected. Grads,
let us know if you’re attending 2017 SAEM in
Orlando or ACEP in Washington, DC.
It was our pleasure to host 112 medical students
from 20 medical schools, 29 rotating residents and
9 fellows from 5 specialties. As of this printing,
we’ve interviewed 117 stellar applicants and look
forward to another great match.
CRISIS PROGRAM
The Crisis Program at Regions Hospital Emergency Center,
represents a successful collaboration between the Emergency
Department and Regions Mental Health Department.
Psychiatric crisis intervention and assessment services are
provided by an experienced, skilled group of licensed independent
clinical social workers (LICSW) staffing the program
24/7. We provide a patient centered and trauma informed
model of care. Patients are seen for a variety of mental health
issues including suicidal behavior, depression, psychosis,
anxiety, post traumatic stress, domestic violence and substance
abuse. The crisis staff work closely with ED physicians,
residents, physician assistants, nurses, ERTs and case managers,
to provide comprehensive psychiatric and psychosocial
assessments and to create discharge plans that maximize
safety and stabilization in the community or in the hospital.
MEDICAL STUDENT PROGRAM
The Regions Hospital Emergency Medicine
Department has a long tradition of educating medical
students. Rotations hosted at Regions include:
essentials of clinical medicine (ECM) for 1st and 2nd
year students, core required EM clerkship through the
University of Minnesota Medical School, advanced
EM clerkship, and elective bedside ultrasound and
toxicology experiences. Students rotating through the
Regions ED have the opportunities to do ride-alongs
in EMS, participate in workshops in orthopedics, eye,
simulation and toxicology and attend the Thursday
didactic sessions along with the residents. During
their clinical shifts they participate in trauma team
activations, code blue resuscitations and are able to
evaluate patients across the entire spectrum of acuity.
Fellowships
Medical Toxicology
The Regions Hospital Clinical Toxicology Service
and the Twin Cities Medical Toxicology Fellowship
(a joint venture between HealthPartners/
Regions and the Minnesota Poison Control System)
had a great 2016. We graduated Drs. Jenna
LeRoy and Travis Olives and welcomed Drs. Ben
Willenbring and Amelia Burgess, who joined 2nd
year fellows Abby Montague and Sean Boley (‘15).
The Tox Service and Fellowship continue to strive
to provide education to fellows, residents, medical
students, pharmacy students, and PA residents. These
learners are why we do what we do, and we look
forward to continued work with them. Research
continues to be a focus for as well. We have several
ongoing projects both at Regions and in conjunction
with medical centers around the country, and
that work is aided by multiple grants from Health-
Partners and from national organizations. Publications
continue to be a focus as well, and in 2016 the
group produced multiple manuscripts and published
abstracts. The national and international exposure
that comes from this work has been bolstered by invitations
to lecture nationally, regionally, and locally.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Regions Hospital EMS has offered a oneyear
EMS fellowship since 2010, allowing
graduates to sit for the certification exam
in EMS offered by the American Board of
Emergency Medicine. Dr. Aaron Burnett
(’11) is the State of MN EMS Medical
Director, Dr. Eric Ernest (’14) was recently
appointed the State of Nebraska EMS
Medical Director, Dr. Chris Ward (’15) is
medical director for Lakes Region EMS
in Minnesota and Drs. Peterson (’13) and
Haley (’16) serve as Assistant Medical
Directors with Regions EMS.
Quality Management &
Patient Safety
Fellow, Ryan Bourdon, MD (‘14), has completed the
fellowship as well as the University of St. Thomas’
Health Care Master’s in Business Administration
program. Ryan worked on quality improvement
projects related to patient reported outcomes, stroke,
sepsis, and operations. He has involved several residents
in these ongoing projects. Ryan has stayed
on at Regions as the Associate Medical Director of
Quality and will focus on quality education as well
as supporting the Medical Director of Quality. The
fellowship curriculum includes topics in medical
quality management and patient safety from both
the delivery of care perspective as well as the health
plan perspective. The curriculum is flexible based
on career goals. If you would like more information
or have interest in applying to the fellowship, please
contact Dr. Andrew Zinkel, fellowship director, at
andrew.r.zinkel@healthpartners.com.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine
(Peds-EM)
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program
at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota
has been training PEM physicians since 1988. The
Children’s Hospital of Minnesota- Minneapolis campus
is certified by the American College of Surgeons
as a Level 1 pediatric trauma center. The program
has nine PEM fellows supported by 40 PEM physicians
and 16 ED-based pediatric nurse practitioners.
This comprises the largest pediatric-emergency
trained staff in the region. The pediatric emergency
department at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of
Minnesota has a combined annual volume of 90,000
patients, with outreach services in Chaska, Woodbury
and Plymouth. Children’s Hospitals has a comprehensive
research department with research staff supporting
the fellowship program; producing several
publications annually. The fellowship enjoys immense
support from faculty who provide weekly lectures, a
formalized ultrasound training program, a simulation
program among other core educational activities.
International
The program focuses on preparing fellows to develop
emergency medical systems and provide medical education
in international settings. Amy Stoesz (‘15), current
second year fellow, continues her work on human
rights and sex trafficking. Monthly education sessions
are helping us build relationships with other colleagues
in the Twin Cities and addressing topics that are critical
to the practice of global health. We are taking advantage
of Regions’ other fellowships to gain perspectives on
Global EMS and Global Toxicology. We have an existing
relationship with the Global Emergency Care Collaborative,
an organization that has a training program for
local providers in Uganda. We have partnered with the
University of Minnesota’s Global Health Pathway to enhance
educational opportunities for our fellows and are
partnering with the HealthPartners International clinic
to allow for more international and social medicine
research opportunities. In addition to working clinical
shifts, we actively participate in multiple annual education
events with Mano a Mano in Bolivia.
Ultrasound
Our first ultrasound fellow, Jessica Greupner (‘16) started
in September and continues to strengthen the emergency
ultrasound program. This fellowship will provide the fellow
with an excellent experience to take forward into academics
or community practice. Fellows will become familiar
with an effective collaborative approach to bedside
ultrasound and will be able to take this forward, becoming
a valuable asset in whatever setting they land. Program
Director, Michael Zwank, MD, RDMS, co-chairs the
Regions Hospital Point-of-Care Ultrasound Committee
which is a multi-department committee that oversees all
point-of-care ultrasound throughout the hospital. Our
ED has a collaborative working relationship with radiology
and cardiology and our fellow will learn both in the
ED and in the echo lab and radiology suite.
