<strong>MWC</strong> <strong>2017</strong>
<strong>puts</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>focus</strong>
on content

Mobile World Congress
(<strong>MWC</strong>) <strong>2017</strong> looks set to
be even bigger than last
year’s event. <strong>MWC</strong> 2016 notched
up a record-breaking attendance of
more than 100,000, but Michael
O’Hara, GSMA’s chief marketing
officer, believes that figure is <strong>the</strong>re
for <strong>the</strong> taking.
“We expect more than 101,000
professionals from across <strong>the</strong>
mobile industry and adjacent
industry sectors to attend this year’s
event,” he told Mobile World Daily.
Attracting key movers and
shakers from ‘adjacent industries’ –
<strong>the</strong> likes of content, automotive,
manufacturing and retail – has
become something of a hallmark at
recent <strong>MWC</strong> events.
“We’re particularly pleased Reed
Hastings, CEO of Netflix, is
speaking in a keynote on Monday
(27 February),” said O’Hara.
“We’ve got a great <strong>focus</strong> on content
this year.”
O<strong>the</strong>r keynote speakers from <strong>the</strong>
world of content include Arnaud de
Puyfontaine, CEO of Vivendi, and his
counterpart at Turner Broadcasting,
John Martin. Both will be giving
presentations at Tuesday’s (28
February) keynote on ‘The Content
Gold Rush’. They will be talking
about how content can differentiate
mobile operators and help with
customer acquisition and retention.
Joining Martin and de
Puyfontaine on stage will be John
Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic,
<strong>the</strong> company behind Pokemon Go.
John Stankey, CEO of AT&T
Entertainment Group, is a keynote
speaker in a session devoted to <strong>the</strong>
digital economy on Monday.
ELEMENTAL
O’Hara does not shirk from bold
straplines to describe <strong>MWC</strong> in
Barcelona. In 2015, <strong>the</strong> overarching
<strong>the</strong>me was mobile at <strong>the</strong> ‘Edge of
Innovation’. Last year, <strong>MWC</strong> delegates
were told that ‘Mobile is Everything’.
How does <strong>the</strong> GSMA trump that?
“Mobile has become an
elemental part of everything in our
life, as well as a part of every
innovation and every technology
development,” explained O’Hara.
“It’s why we chose ‘Mobile: The
Next Element’ as this year’s <strong>the</strong>me.
The <strong>2017</strong> edition of <strong>MWC</strong> will
highlight just how elemental
mobile has become in our
everyday lives and <strong>the</strong> positive
impact it’s having for billions of
people around <strong>the</strong> world.”

MWL survey finds IT
systems set for overhaul

Network functions
virtualisation (NFV) and 5G
technology will require
mobile operators to completely
replace legacy back office BSS, OSS
or IT systems, Mobile World Live’s
inaugural industry survey found.
In a study involving close to
1,000 key decision makers from
across <strong>the</strong> mobile ecosystem, 66
per cent predicted wholesale
changes in back-end systems will
be necessary as <strong>the</strong> industry
progresses rapidly towards 5G
deployments. Some 31 per cent
predicted 5G will be mainstream by
2020, and 96 per cent tip <strong>the</strong>
technology to be widely available
by 2025.
The results of Mobile World Live’s
first annual industry survey were
published in <strong>the</strong> run up to Mobile
World Congress. “The research
provides a real world insight into
<strong>the</strong> challenges facing <strong>the</strong> mobile
industry as it transitions towards 5G
and virtualisation,” said Justin
Springham, managing editor of
Mobile World Live.
“For example, 38 per cent of
respondents said cost is <strong>the</strong> biggest
barrier to 5G uptake ra<strong>the</strong>r than
technology. In contrast, <strong>the</strong>
challenge facing NFV and SDN is
more technological in nature.”
While <strong>the</strong> industry pushes
virtualisation, <strong>the</strong> survey
highlighted a split in terms of <strong>the</strong>
benefits offered: 45 per cent believe
virtualisation will ultimately reduce
operating costs compared with 43
per cent who are unsure it will do so.
On 5G, close to three quarters (71
per cent) said <strong>the</strong> technology is a
must-have moving forward. However,
58 per cent of respondents expressed
concern about overhyping <strong>the</strong>
capabilities of <strong>the</strong> technology.
CHALLENGES
In addition to considering future
challenges, Mobile World Live
quizzed industry executives on near
term challenges.
Close to 40 per cent said security is
<strong>the</strong> biggest challenge facing operators
in <strong>2017</strong>, with close to two thirds (61
per cent) placing <strong>the</strong> responsibility for
securing <strong>the</strong> mobile ecosystem
squarely at <strong>the</strong> door of operators.

One way mobile is having a
major impact is through <strong>the</strong>
Internet of Things (IoT), both for
consumers and enterprise. A
recent paper by General Electric
proposed that a 1% increase in
productivity in industrial processes
could translate to a $10-15 trillion
increase in global GDP over 15
years. This year’s <strong>MWC</strong> has a
keynote session devoted to <strong>the</strong>
industrial internet.
O’Hara is also chairing a session
on connected vehicles. Anthony
Levandowski, founder and CEO of
Otto, a US-based self-driving truck
specialist, is among <strong>the</strong> panellists.
Now owned by Uber, Otto‘s
hardware and software enabled
what it claimed to be <strong>the</strong> world’s
first autonomous truck delivery last
year. The cargo? 50,000 cans of
Budweiser.
OPERATORS TAKE CENTRE
STAGE
Although <strong>MWC</strong> reflects <strong>the</strong>
growing mobile ecosystem,
operators are still at <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong>
event. The opening keynote
session, moderated by Mats
Granryd, <strong>the</strong> GSMA’s director
general, brings toge<strong>the</strong>r some of
<strong>the</strong> biggest names in <strong>the</strong> industry.
Joining Granryd on stage are <strong>the</strong>
CEOs of KT Corporation (Chang-
Gyu Hwang), SoftBank Group
(Masayoshi Son) and Telefonica
(José María Álvarez-Pallete López).
The chairman of Bharti Enterprises,
Sunil Mittal, will also participate in
<strong>the</strong> keynote.
Under <strong>the</strong> <strong>MWC</strong> <strong>2017</strong> strap-line –
Mobile: The Next Element – <strong>the</strong>y
will discuss <strong>the</strong> role of mobile in
today’s world and how it is shaping
emerging innovation.
…AND THE REGULATORS
In an <strong>MWC</strong> first, <strong>the</strong>re will be a
keynote session on policy. “This has
not happened before, as regulators
have normally been part of <strong>the</strong>
ministerial programme, but this is a
response to feedback we’ve had,”
said O’Hara.
Under <strong>the</strong> title of ‘Building <strong>the</strong> 5G
economy’, <strong>the</strong> keynote session will
intriguingly bring toge<strong>the</strong>r two key
industry figures with arguably
different views on net neutrality –
<strong>the</strong> principle that all web traffic
should be treated equally.
On <strong>the</strong> one side is Republican Ajit
Pai, recently appointed as chairman
of <strong>the</strong> Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) in <strong>the</strong> US.
Formerly an FCC commissioner,
Pai opposed <strong>the</strong> tough pro-net
neutrality stance of his predecessor
(and Democrat) Tom Wheeler. He is
also apparently much less resistant
to big-deal mergers.
On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side is Andrus
Ansip, VP, digital single market, for
<strong>the</strong> European Commission (EC).
The EC was instrumental in
introducing new net neutrality laws
across <strong>the</strong> European Union, which
came into force in April 2016.
INNOVATION CITY
Regular <strong>MWC</strong> attendees making <strong>the</strong>ir
way to <strong>the</strong> keynotes in <strong>the</strong> auditorium
will notice a big difference this year.
As <strong>the</strong>y pass through Hall 4 <strong>the</strong>y will
find <strong>the</strong> GSMA Innovation City,
relocated from Hall 3.
A popular destination for <strong>MWC</strong>
attendees – more than 30,000
visitors last year – Innovation City
will feature products and gadgets
from AT&T, Cisco Jasper, KT, among
o<strong>the</strong>rs. From healthcare to
agriculture, home to office, and
connected cars to global transport
logistics, Innovation City will provide
insights on <strong>the</strong> future of mobility.
LET’S GO DOWNTOWN
<strong>MWC</strong> <strong>2017</strong> is not confined to <strong>the</strong>
Fira Gran Via. At Fira Montjuïc, <strong>the</strong>
previous venue for <strong>MWC</strong> in
Barcelona, Four Years From Now
(4YFN) – aimed at startups and
investor communities – is expected
to have 16,000 attendees this year,
up from 12,500 in 2016. 4YFN will
showcase distinct <strong>the</strong>mes for each
day of <strong>the</strong> event, including IoT and
digital media.
Also at Fira Montjuïc will be <strong>the</strong>
Youth Mobile Festival (YoMo),
ano<strong>the</strong>r new addition to <strong>the</strong> <strong>MWC</strong>
line-up. Up to 20,000 young people
(aged 10-16 years) from across
Catalonia and Spain are expected to
get hands-on experience of science
and technology. Through a mix of
workshops, <strong>the</strong>atre and shows, <strong>the</strong>
aim of YoMo is to get young people
interested in pursuing careers in tech.
GLOMOS AND MMIX
Back for <strong>2017</strong>, <strong>the</strong> MMIX Summit will
be held Wednesday, 1 March in
Theatre C, Hall 8.0 NEXTech, and will
explore <strong>the</strong> exploding global demand
for multi-screen media and
entertainment and <strong>the</strong> unprecedented
pace of innovation and disruption
fuelling <strong>the</strong> market today. The official
MMIX Party will also take place on
<strong>the</strong> evening of Tuesday, 28 February
at <strong>the</strong> Luz de Gas club in central
Barcelona, featuring an exclusive
performance from one of <strong>the</strong> UK’s
hottest young Indie bands – Glass
Animals – recently described as
‘international streaming sensations’.
And of course <strong>the</strong> prestigious
Glomo Awards return, hosted again
by TV presenters Suzi Perry and
Ortis Deley. Winners of selected
awards will also be broadcast
throughout <strong>the</strong> week on Mobile
World Live TV.
In an effort to minimise <strong>the</strong> environmental impact of
our event, <strong>the</strong> GSMA promotes <strong>the</strong> usage of recycled
materials and waste reduction wherever possible.
Building on this commitment, we are now pursuing
official Carbon Neutral certification of Mobile World
Congress under <strong>the</strong> international standard PAS 2060.

Nearly half (48 per cent) tipped
IoT as <strong>the</strong> most attractive business
area for <strong>the</strong> mobile industry this
year. While respondents noted
operators face a number of
challenges in IoT, some 57 per cent
expect <strong>the</strong>m to overcome those
obstacles and become key enablers
for <strong>the</strong> sector during <strong>the</strong> year.
“We are delighted with <strong>the</strong>
response to our first annual
industry survey, and with <strong>the</strong>
detailed information provided,”
Springham said, adding: “The
research shows mobile operators
have a key role to play in <strong>2017</strong> and
beyond, and have myriad
opportunities to supplement
declining revenue in <strong>the</strong>ir
traditional businesses with
emerging technologies.”

Netflix set to
make streaming
debut on MWL TV

Ahead of Mobile World Congress, CCS Insight's Paolo Pescatore
discusses <strong>the</strong> major <strong>the</strong>mes that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is likely
to address in his keynote session.
At this year's Mobile World Congress, Reed Hastings, <strong>the</strong> CEO of
Netflix, will headline Monday's keynote presentation. This is pretty
significant for <strong>the</strong> event. It's <strong>the</strong> first time that a leading company in <strong>the</strong>
media landscape has been given this important slot. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong>
last time Hastings was on stage at a big event — CES 2016 — he
announced <strong>the</strong> launch of Netflix in 130 new countries. Netflix is <strong>the</strong> first
truly global online video service. Although China is notably absent from
<strong>the</strong> list, this is quite an accolade within a short period.
Netflix has done a phenomenal job of entering many new markets
very quickly. As a result, it enjoys <strong>the</strong> benefits of a huge scale and
reach, and early-mover advantage. Video is a battleground for all
providers. We've seen all companies including Amazon, traditional TV
providers and even operators move keenly into online video services.
Netflix needs to keep a watchful eye on Amazon. This formidable rival
has rolled out its video service globally and has similar aspirations to
<strong>the</strong> former. It also has <strong>the</strong> assets to challenge Netflix as <strong>the</strong> leading
global paid-for online video service.
Netflix can't rest on its laurels, and has still to overcome many of its main
obstacles. These include slower subscriber growth in its home market, <strong>the</strong>
need for more investment to support its international content and
operations, and <strong>the</strong> rate at which it can become profitable in each market.
As Netflix’s content spending continues to rise, a lack of meaningful
subscriber growth will dent its profit hard in <strong>2017</strong>. Partnerships with cable
providers and operators will be crucial in attracting new customers.
This represents a major element of Netflix's future strategy. Partnerships
with operators and cable providers will help promote its service in all
markets and boost subscriber adoption. This has been paramount to its
success in Europe, especially in <strong>the</strong> UK. I believe that Hastings will use his
keynote speech to position Netflix as a partner of choice for providers that
lack <strong>the</strong> assets to compete in online video services.
Netflix added a record 19 million customers in 2016, compared with
17.4 million in 2015, 13 million in 2014 and 11.1 million in 2013. Its
subscriber total now stands at almost 94 million and is on course to
reach <strong>the</strong> milestone of 100 million in <strong>2017</strong>. Yet it must continue
<strong>focus</strong>sing on adding more subscribers. More importantly, having a
greater number of customers will allow <strong>the</strong> company to better
understand local tastes and to determine what people want to watch.
This in turn will give Netflix <strong>the</strong> confidence to invest fur<strong>the</strong>r in content.
It's apparent that <strong>the</strong> latest developments in video and TV indicate
that <strong>the</strong> future of delivering <strong>the</strong>se services will be over <strong>the</strong> internet.
Consequently, Netflix must start shifting its <strong>focus</strong> toward securing
rights on a pan-regional basis ra<strong>the</strong>r than in each individual country.
It's moving closer to a position where it could dictate terms to its
content partners. I believe that Netflix is quickly becoming an
indispensable part of any content owner's distribution strategy. At <strong>the</strong>
same time, I still think Netflix is a takeover target for a web provider.

INCLUDED ON HANDSETS, YET
MANUFACTURERS ARE STILL
FIELDING COMPLAINTS ABOUT
LIQUID DAMAGE, WHAT ARE THE
SHORTCOMINGS OF THE METHODS
COMMONLY USED?
Yang Yun (YY): Besides HZO's coating
solutions, <strong>the</strong>re are basically two types of
water protection technologies out <strong>the</strong>re for
handsets: hydrophobic coatings and
mechanical seals. Both can be effective to a
point, but have significant limitations that
make <strong>the</strong>m less than ideal for true protection.
Hydrophobic coatings are applied to <strong>the</strong>
internal or external surface of a device,
creating a hydrophobic surface to repel water
away. These minimal coatings may work for
light splashes, but even companies who sell
this service admit <strong>the</strong> technology is limited,
not offering <strong>the</strong> same level of protection as
traditional waterproof devices as <strong>the</strong> coating
is not capable of full submersion protection.
These coatings are also susceptible to
abrasion, eventually wearing off when
handled by a user.
Mechanical Seals and gaskets are old
fashioned solutions for water protection, which
some manufacturers are using to protect from
water ingress. While <strong>the</strong>se methods have
worked for larger, bulkier devices previously,
<strong>the</strong> industrial design of today <strong>focus</strong>es on
leaner, slimmer and smaller. As <strong>the</strong> form factor
of handsets has decreased, so too has <strong>the</strong>
effectiveness of gaskets. This technology is
also susceptible to environmental issues and
can be damaged by drops, temperature
fluctuations and general deterioration.
MWD: HOW DOES YOUR APPROACH
DIFFER AND WHAT ARE THE MAIN
ASPECTS OF YOUR TECHNOLOGY
THAT SET YOU APART?
YY: People typically think of ‘waterproof ’
as preventing water ingress from corroding
<strong>the</strong> internal circuitry. Opposite of <strong>the</strong>

status quo, HZO directly protects <strong>the</strong>
victim of corrosion: <strong>the</strong> PCBA. Our
process involves applying a microns thin
coating to <strong>the</strong> surface of <strong>the</strong> circuit board,
encapsulating and protecting it. With this
alternative, even if water or o<strong>the</strong>r liquids
enter <strong>the</strong> device, <strong>the</strong> source of failure, <strong>the</strong>
PCBA, is protected.

should meet) this rating. HZO is able protect
products at IP67 and beyond. For example, a
manufacturer came to HZO who had
previously built a mechanically sealed IP67
rated product, but wanted to build a more
robust next generation device without <strong>the</strong>
need for mechanical seals and port covers.
The result was an IP68 rated product that met
<strong>the</strong> manufacturer's specifications of up to 60
minutes in 2 meters of water – all with HZO
Protection and no mechanical seals.
MWD: WHAT STANDARDS DO THEY
MEET AND HOW DO THEY OFFER
IMPROVED PROTECTION COMPARED
TO RIVAL TECHNOLOGIES?
YY: The most common manufacturing
standard for liquid protection is <strong>the</strong> IP
(Ingress Protection) Code. This protocol has
been a part of manufacturing procedures for
many years and is <strong>the</strong> most recognised water
protection standard. The standard itself
ranges from minimal water exposure such as
drips (IPX1) to manufacturer-rated prolonged
submersion protection (IP68). IP67 is <strong>the</strong>
threshold to cross for submersion protection
which is defined as a device being submerged
at one meter for a half an hour.
Most “waterproof” labeled devices meet (or

YY: While fresh water is <strong>the</strong> typical culprit of
short circuiting and corrosion in electronic
devices, it is not <strong>the</strong> only source of damage.
Soda, coffee, humidity, pollution, gases,
corrosive chemicals, salt water, salt fog,
chlorine and even sweat can render a device
useless. HZO coating technology forms a
physical barrier and can protect against any
of <strong>the</strong>se damaging liquids.
MWD: HOW HAS HANDSET DESIGN
AND USAGE CHANGED THE LEVEL OF
PROTECTION NEEDED?
YY: Devices continue to get thinner and
people are taking <strong>the</strong>m more places than
ever. These thin profiles make water
protection complicated as manufacturers are
close to hitting <strong>the</strong> limits of mechanical seals.
Any bend, twist or drop of a product can
dislodge or break <strong>the</strong> protective gaskets.
This, combined with <strong>the</strong> phone being
exposed to environments and conditions
(outdoors, sauna, shower, tub, swimming,
humidity) previously un-encountered, can
lead to a short lifespan for <strong>the</strong> electronic. The
use of thin but extremely robust protection
like HZO's coating technology is <strong>the</strong> way that
devices will survive in <strong>the</strong> future.

How will this year’s
<strong>MWC</strong> differ from last
year in terms of
<strong>the</strong>mes, hot topics
and breakthroughs?
It probably won't. For <strong>the</strong> last
few years, we've known <strong>the</strong>
key <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>the</strong> industry has
been <strong>focus</strong>ed on: 5G, IoT, telco
IT, enterprise digital
transformation. There will be
fur<strong>the</strong>r progress on all <strong>the</strong>se
fronts, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes will
remain.
The industrial internet and AI
will receive more attention
this year, particularly around
enabling IoT network
technologies, including
licenced LPWA such as NB-
IoT. Also, a new GSMA
programme Women4Tech is
being introduced at <strong>MWC</strong>17,
which <strong>focus</strong>es on addressing
and reducing <strong>the</strong> gender gap
in <strong>the</strong> mobile industry.
Gigabit LTE is set to be a
leading topic; expect a flurry
of announcements that should
deflect some of <strong>the</strong> usual
hype around 5G. There’ll be
plenty of buzz around NB-IoT
as <strong>the</strong> first commercial
networks begin to launch.
Lastly, a keynote from Netflix
could help content emerge as
a surprise <strong>the</strong>me for an event
traditionally <strong>focus</strong>ed on
devices and connectivity.
One <strong>the</strong>me will permeate
multiple topics: AI. From
virtual assistants in devices
and bots in chat apps to <strong>the</strong>
use of machine-learning to
power self-healing networks
and emerging Internet of
Things (IoT) applications, AI
will be everywhere at <strong>MWC</strong>
<strong>2017</strong>. Mobile video will also be
an even more prominent
<strong>the</strong>me than previous years.
While last year already saw
much talk about LPWA (low
power wide area) networks,
<strong>the</strong> flood of network rollouts
this year and beyond means
that I expect it to be a hot
topic again. We are moving
from proof of concept to
commercial rollouts, which
means sales pipelines are
building and thus <strong>the</strong> real
business of LPWA fur<strong>the</strong>r
revealing itself.
What will be <strong>the</strong> most
surprising
development in
mobile this year?
For all <strong>the</strong> buzz around 5G,
we'll see a lot of movement on
LTE. In part, this is because
<strong>the</strong>re's still plenty of life in <strong>the</strong>
technology and plenty of
upgrades that can deliver on
5G-like promises. In part, it's
because <strong>the</strong>re are many
markets where LTE
deployments are just getting
underway. Perhaps most
importantly, it's because
vendors need to remind any
service provider waiting for 5G
that <strong>the</strong>y have o<strong>the</strong>r options in
<strong>the</strong> here and now.
Innovation is happening
outside of <strong>the</strong> devices space,
particularly around AI, new
voice interfaces and chat bots.
These may come toge<strong>the</strong>r in
surprising ways.
Expect voice to become
fashionable once again as
natural speech interfaces
emerge as a hot topic.
Building on <strong>the</strong> momentum of
Amazon’s Alexa, a slew of
supporting devices could give
a welcome boost to connected
home services and spur
heightened competition from
<strong>the</strong> likes of Google.
The 10th anniversary iPhone.
After a disappointing 2016, <strong>the</strong>
pressure’s on for <strong>the</strong> creator
of <strong>the</strong> original disruptive
mobile device to impress.
Apple’s made some
interesting acquisitions
related to computer vision,
augmented reality and AI to
suggest it hasn’t given up
striving to create “magical”
and “revolutionary”
experiences, but <strong>the</strong>re’s no
guarantee it will achieve that.
It will be seeing MNOs make
investments in areas that
takes <strong>the</strong>m much fur<strong>the</strong>r out
of <strong>the</strong>ir connectivity comfort
zones. Think of MNOs trying
to be more a software or
analytics company. I would
not be surprised if
acquisitions and certainly
partnerships speak to this,
especially by MNOs leading
<strong>the</strong> charge into IoT.
What will be <strong>the</strong>
biggest challenges
facing <strong>the</strong> mobile
sector this year?
Spectrum scarcity will remain
an issue for operators. And,
as operators look to
transform <strong>the</strong>ir networks,
obtaining (or building) <strong>the</strong>
expertise and skills necessary
will be difficult. Two
challenges, however, will
loom above all o<strong>the</strong>rs.
Competition: as <strong>the</strong> definition
of "competitor" continues to
expand (including IT and OTT
players). Regulation: as new
administrations come into
power and competitive
dynamics impact thinking
around net neutrality, market
power, and data privacy.
Moving beyond <strong>the</strong> 5G hype.
Identifying more use cases for
5G beyond autonomous
driving and immersive
communication with AR and
VR. Also, <strong>the</strong> mobile sector
working on interoperability
and ensuring spectrum band
harmonisation.
A dearth of potential usecases
is likely to threaten
operator enthusiasm for 5G as
<strong>the</strong> business opportunity fails
to become clearer. We are
increasingly seeing disparity
between targets set by
authorities and industry
willingness to invest.
Meanwhile, divergent
spectrum strategies threaten
technology fragmentation
once again.
The influence of mobile is so
widespread that it’s hard to
say where <strong>the</strong> sector begins
and ends. All businesses – not
just mobile operators, device
manufacturers and network
vendors – must be mobile
because <strong>the</strong>ir customers are.
The coming year will increase
this challenge as a stepchange
in <strong>the</strong> spread and
sophistication of AI, <strong>the</strong> smart
home and o<strong>the</strong>r connected
things fur<strong>the</strong>r entwines
consumer technology with
people’s daily lives.
From an IoT perspective, I
believe it will be where to
<strong>focus</strong> finite resources. There
is no denying that <strong>the</strong> IoT
business is growing at a
robust pace for many MNOs
across <strong>the</strong> globe. But will it
continue to grow fast enough
and accelerate? With each
passing year, <strong>the</strong>re is more
pressure for IoT to perform
even better.
What one thing would
you like to see
happen in mobile
over <strong>the</strong> next 12
months?
I hope to see more concrete
examples of mobile being
used by - and benefiting - a
wide array of vertical
industries. Service providers
and network vendors, alike,
all recognise <strong>the</strong> importance
of tapping this opportunity. It
would be nice to see proof
that <strong>the</strong>y are executing, if only
to spread <strong>the</strong> word and
fur<strong>the</strong>r drive <strong>the</strong>ir efforts.
Ubiquitous IoT platforms that
will seamlessly connect every
consumer and enterprise IoT
device, including
smartphones, and deliver
truly connected homes, cars,
and cities.
Leading European operators
become less risk-averse and
seek opportunities in new
areas outside traditional
comfort zones. As traditional
telephony continues to
commoditise, could a leading
player make a bold and
disruptive push into a new
sector or industry?
Operators need to take
providing quality broadband
(more) seriously. All <strong>the</strong>
industry’s talk of mobile video,
gigabit connections, networkslicing,
and o<strong>the</strong>r hot topics
won’t amount to much if
operators fail to fix poor
broadband coverage and
blackspots that continue to
blight homes, offices and
public spaces in towns and
cities as well as rural areas.
This goes back to what I see as
potentially surprising
developments. Risky for sure,
but what I’d like to see happen
is an MNO truly blazing <strong>the</strong>
transformation trail in such a
way that a few years from now
calling <strong>the</strong>m an MNO would
actually no longer be a fair
characterisation.

Gigabit connections
and 5G: changing
<strong>the</strong> economics
The wireless industry recently generated significant dialogue surrounding
gigabit internet connections and how to deploy <strong>the</strong>se networks quickly and
at an affordable cost. With so much excitement surrounding millimetre wave
products, conversations have turned to new possibilities in gigabit
connectivity. Now 5G technology, along with o<strong>the</strong>r millimetre wave
products, are emerging as <strong>the</strong> key technology which will enable networks to
operate faster, extend fur<strong>the</strong>r, and penetrate deeper, enabling <strong>the</strong> arrival of
new and innovative products and services.
Millimetre wave products operate in
<strong>the</strong> frequency band between 30GHz
and 300GHz. These special
electromagnetic waves, whose frequency are
far beyond <strong>the</strong> range of o<strong>the</strong>r commonly used
wireless technologies, have <strong>the</strong> ability to
transmit large amounts of data. Within <strong>the</strong>
60GHz frequency, narrow beams enable
multiple radios to be installed on <strong>the</strong> same
rooftop or tower, even when operating at <strong>the</strong>
same transmit and receive frequencies. These
bands also offer interference and security
advantages when compared to o<strong>the</strong>r wireless
technologies. So, how exactly does <strong>the</strong>
unlicensed 60GHz frequency play into <strong>the</strong>
recent “Gigabit Era” to drive down costs?
When <strong>the</strong> telecommunications industry
considers fibre-to-<strong>the</strong>-home (FTTH) costs,
<strong>the</strong> metric generally referenced is “cost per
home passed.” This metric is important
because with cabled fibre, it is necessary to
build out and trench past each home or
business which might want <strong>the</strong> service –
whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y actually buy <strong>the</strong> service or not.
Cost per home passed is used to describe, on
average, <strong>the</strong> price to build out <strong>the</strong> fibre plant
to reach only potential subscribers.
The “take-rate” is ano<strong>the</strong>r notable metric,
referring to <strong>the</strong> percentage of houses passed
which actually sign up for service and
become subscribers. For end-users who sign
up and become subscribers, <strong>the</strong>re is an
additional expense for a fibre drop to <strong>the</strong>ir
home or business plus <strong>the</strong> customer-premises
equipment (CPE) – an extra cost which is
common across nearly all broadband services
whe<strong>the</strong>r xDSL, DOCSIS, or fibre.
With hybrid fibre-wireless and pure
wireless gigabit networks, <strong>the</strong> cost structure
is significantly reduced. Wireless technology
allows large geographic areas to be covered
per base station deployed and only homes
which become subscribers require <strong>the</strong>
additional cost of a CPE. In <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>the</strong>se
networks typically operated in <strong>the</strong> 2.4GHz
and 5GHz bands, but <strong>the</strong> drawback is <strong>the</strong>y
cannot deliver bandwidth comparable to fibre
networks. In addition, with <strong>the</strong> growing
“noise” from millions of o<strong>the</strong>r devices
operating in <strong>the</strong> same spectrum, <strong>the</strong>se factors
can severely impair an ISP’s ability to provide
reliable, high-bandwidth connections.
With <strong>the</strong> 60GHz unlicensed band, service
providers can provide <strong>the</strong> best of both
worlds. An amazing amount of spectrum is
available – 14GHz total in <strong>the</strong> U.S. for
example, and with <strong>the</strong> unique characteristics
of this band we never need to worry about
indoor devices interfering with <strong>the</strong> outdoor
devices delivering <strong>the</strong> internet connection.
This technology is readily available today to
deliver multi-gigabit connections over 60GHz
bandwidth, making it a true competitor to <strong>the</strong>
speeds delivered by traditional fibre,
delivering reliable gigabit connections
wirelessly.
For example, a typical subdivision’s
average cost per home passed comes in at
$750 per home. Again, this cost is incurred to
build out <strong>the</strong> fibre network just to have <strong>the</strong>
option to offer service to <strong>the</strong> customer. This
cost may vary slightly depending on several
factors, but it’s a reasonable average. With a
take-rate of 50%, <strong>the</strong> cost per subscriber
connected doubles to $1500. To do <strong>the</strong> same
with a wireless solution which covers up to
32 potential subscribers,. <strong>the</strong> cost per
subscriber drops to roughly $30 including <strong>the</strong>
wireless infrastructure to interconnect and
feed <strong>the</strong> base stations.
One must also consider <strong>the</strong> cost for each
CPE, which favours wireless connectivity. For
FTTH, <strong>the</strong> incremental cost for each
subscriber who signs up for service is around
$700 on average (OLT, ONT, and drop). For
wireless, <strong>the</strong> cost is under $500 today with
fur<strong>the</strong>r reductions in cost on <strong>the</strong> horizon.
Exactly where does 60GHz and o<strong>the</strong>r 5G
technology fit within <strong>the</strong> deployment of
millimetre wave wireless networks? With
<strong>the</strong>se new technologies on <strong>the</strong> horizon,
current networks must be flexible enough
to overcome <strong>the</strong> challenges of population
density, data rich neighbourhoods and <strong>the</strong>
ability to feed future devices while
providing ubiquitous connectivity.
Connecting small cells will be one of <strong>the</strong>
most important economic development
tactics over <strong>the</strong> next decade, encouraging
<strong>the</strong> expansion of links to building tops,
neighbourhoods and o<strong>the</strong>r public spaces.
Ubiquitous high-speed data connections
are key to economic growth and <strong>the</strong>
development of next-generation products
and services.

Moving forward, 60GHz technology along
with 5G have enormous potential and will
contribute to <strong>the</strong> global economy with new
business and job growth by expanding <strong>the</strong>
range of goods and services enabled by <strong>the</strong>
technology. However, to maximise its
potential, several factors, including gigabit
connections and <strong>the</strong> expansion of network
access, need to work in cooperation to
achieve a steadfast wireless experience.
Future 5G networks will most benefit from:
• Additional spectrum
• Higher frequencies above 6GHz
• Dense networks and small cells
• imultaneous, multiple connections
• Flexibility to enable vast numbers of
connected devices, with highly reliable
connections
Gigabit connections are becoming
economically viable with an increasing
demand among residential and business
customers. The unlicensed millimetre wave
market, coupled with innovative wireless
technologies, will most certainly allow for <strong>the</strong>
expansion of more cost-effective wireless
networks worldwide. Innovative products will
work hand-in-hand with fibre and 5G to usher
in <strong>the</strong> era of low-cost, high-speed
connectivity. It is an exciting time to be a part
of enabling <strong>the</strong> next generation of networks
that utilise cutting edge technology to bring
affordable gigabit internet connections to
everyone.

<strong>MWC</strong> <strong>2017</strong>:
Top 5 Themes
Mobile World Congress (<strong>MWC</strong>) is back for its 12th year in Barcelona. This
hugely significant event has tracked some of <strong>the</strong> exciting and innovative
changes in <strong>the</strong> mobile industry over <strong>the</strong> years. While last year’s <strong>the</strong>me was
Mobile is Everything, reflecting <strong>the</strong> growing influence of mobile on o<strong>the</strong>r
industries and areas of our lives, <strong>the</strong> <strong>focus</strong> this year is on mobile as The Next
Element. As Anne Morris reports, <strong>MWC</strong> <strong>2017</strong> is expected to reflect how
elemental mobile technology has become in our everyday lives.
Although <strong>the</strong>re’s still much innovation
happening within <strong>the</strong> network,
mobility is no longer <strong>the</strong> innovation
itself, according to Emma Mohr-McClune,
service director at GlobalData.
“These days, it’s almost impossible to find a
carrier or over-<strong>the</strong>-top innovation that isn’t de
facto, intrinsically mobile, or even ‘mobile
first’ and increasingly we see this <strong>focus</strong> from
all players within <strong>the</strong> ecosystem,” she said.
“Enterprises and consumers take (mobility)
for granted. That’s why I’m expecting fewer
5G technology discussions this year, and
more emphasis on <strong>the</strong> intersect of mobility
with new forms of customer experiences and
communications engagements, not all of
<strong>the</strong>m human.”
Indeed, <strong>the</strong> “mobility is elemental” <strong>the</strong>me
of this year’s <strong>MWC</strong> reflects <strong>the</strong> degree to
which mobile has become a fundamental
part of our lives. With this in mind, what
can you expect to see at <strong>the</strong> Fira Gran Via
this year? To help you plan your week, we
have compiled some views from industry
experts on what <strong>the</strong>y expect or hope to see
at <strong>the</strong> show.
DEVICES
New launches of smartphones, phablets,
tablets and now wearable devices have
traditionally been a dominant <strong>the</strong>me at
<strong>MWC</strong>, and even as <strong>the</strong> <strong>focus</strong> of <strong>the</strong> event
broadens this continues to be <strong>the</strong> case,
according to Annette Zimmermann,
research director at Gartner.
“Of course <strong>the</strong>re will be new flagship
phones from <strong>the</strong> vendors, but one that stands
out is <strong>the</strong> new Nokia smartphone to be
announced on Sunday (26 February)
evening,” said Zimmermann.
The expected launch by licensee HMD
Global also marks <strong>the</strong> return of <strong>the</strong> famous
Nokia brand to <strong>the</strong> mobile phone market, but
HMD will be under pressure to impress a
knowledgeable — and cynical — audience at
<strong>the</strong> event.
“They will have to come up with something
unique and announce markets outside China
if <strong>the</strong>y want to be a serious player again,”
added Zimmermann.
Nokia and HMD aside, numerous new
device launches are also expected at <strong>MWC</strong>.
And Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS
Insight, believes it will be tough to stand out
from <strong>the</strong> crowd in <strong>the</strong> “current sea of
sameness” that characterises Android
smartphones.
“The rumour mill is indicating that
Samsung won’t be launching <strong>the</strong> Galaxy S8,
so this leaves an opportunity for ano<strong>the</strong>r
phone manufacturer to make a splash. A key
trend we expect in flagship devices will be
taking <strong>the</strong> screen right to <strong>the</strong> edge of <strong>the</strong>
device — something we’ve seen already from
Sharp and more recently Xiaomi with <strong>the</strong> Mi
Mix phone,” he noted.
As things stand, a number of vendors have
already announced “unveiling events” at
<strong>MWC</strong>. BlackBerry's licensing partner TCL,
clearly keen to get ahead of <strong>the</strong> pack, plans
to hold its event on Saturday (25 February).
Huawei, LG, Motorola and Samsung have all
sent out invitations for Sunday, and Asian
smartphone manufacturers Gionee and Sony
both plan to hold <strong>the</strong>ir events on Monday.
Although <strong>the</strong> Samsung Galaxy S8 is
unlikely to materialise, rumours suggest that
<strong>the</strong> South Korean vendor could unveil a tablet
— <strong>the</strong> Galaxy Tab S3. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong>
company could also face more scrutiny over
what went wrong with <strong>the</strong> Note 7.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
AI is expected to be a dominant <strong>the</strong>me at <strong>MWC</strong>,
according to Jim Bailey, senior managing
director at Accenture Mobility, part of
Accenture Digital, although a number of
analysts are already counselling caution on what
should actually be labelled “AI” at this stage.
“I have no doubt that AI will underpin
many of <strong>the</strong> most exciting products and
solutions on show at <strong>MWC</strong> this year, and
dozens of conversations will take place about
what it can do for businesses across
industries,” said Bailey. “But we need to
differentiate <strong>the</strong> hype from <strong>the</strong> reality.
O<strong>the</strong>rwise, we risk <strong>the</strong> real value of emerging
technologies being underestimated, resulting
in a slowdown of investment and innovation.”
Avi Greengart, research director at
GlobalData, also said that AI “will be a
ubiquitous buzzword. Nearly anything will be
labelled 'AI': programmatic battery life
optimisation, tooltips, and, of course, any
type of natural language interaction with
services, whe<strong>the</strong>r spoken or text-based, will
all be labelled ‘AI’”.

Although <strong>the</strong>re is a risk that natural
language interaction with services may be
“prematurely labelled ‘AI’,” according to Peter
Briggs, senior analyst at GlobalData, Wood
from CCS Insight believes that <strong>the</strong> arrival of
natural speech interfaces is also set to make
voice a hot topic again after years of it being
an almost forgotten element of
communications technology.
Amazon’s Alexa, of course, is one of <strong>the</strong>
fastest growing technology platforms at <strong>the</strong>
moment, and Wood believes plenty more
devices will be supporting it.

“However, don’t be surprised to see Google
making a big push with its rival solution, said
Wood. “You can be sure that <strong>the</strong>re will be a
number of announcements of devices using
Google’s Assistant, particularly after Huawei
said it will be supporting Alexa on <strong>the</strong> Mate 9.
Google will want to make sure o<strong>the</strong>r Android
phone makers throw <strong>the</strong>ir weight behind its
platform, ra<strong>the</strong>r than Amazon’s Alexa.
Gartner’s Zimmermann also said that <strong>the</strong>
<strong>the</strong>me of integrating intelligent systems like
Alexa into hardware such as smart watches
and smartphones would continue at <strong>MWC</strong>.
“And apart from Alexa”, <strong>the</strong>re are o<strong>the</strong>r
intelligent systems that will show <strong>the</strong>ir
influence. Natural language processing is
one thing, but <strong>the</strong>re are o<strong>the</strong>r systems such
as face and emotion recognition that is used
in different scenarios such as in <strong>the</strong>
connected home or via cameras in <strong>the</strong> car,”
she commented.
IOT
It’s difficult not to include <strong>the</strong> all-pervasive
Internet of Things (IoT) in an <strong>MWC</strong> “top 5”.
Martin Garner, SVP at CCS Insight, expects
<strong>the</strong> <strong>focus</strong> to shift from new technology to
service implementation, aided by <strong>the</strong>
“accelerating alignment with key verticals”.
According to Bailey from Accenture
Mobility, for those organisations undertaking
IoT projects beyond small-scale pilots, this
will be <strong>the</strong> year that <strong>the</strong>y begin to define <strong>the</strong>ir
competitive advantage. “Their plans for IoT
projects and <strong>the</strong> results of completed pilots
will be a popular topic of conversation behind
closed doors at <strong>MWC</strong>, as such experience is
invaluable to fast followers and ecosystem
partners,” he said.
For those that are less advanced in <strong>the</strong>ir IoT
implementations, Bailey said <strong>MWC</strong> will be an
opportunity “to look around for inspiration,
with strong momentum continuing to build at
pace. Businesses will look to identify how new
connections can transform <strong>the</strong>ir operations
and business models, and we will see more
examples of how IoT is making a difference
than ever before”.
As in 2016, narrow band IoT (NB-IoT) is
also expected to be high on <strong>the</strong> agenda as
operators prepare to bring commercial
networks to market.
“We expect this to be a very prominent
<strong>the</strong>me as 3GPP-based solutions (Cat-M and
Cat-NB1) finally start to build momentum and
rival proprietary alternatives such as Sigfox
and Lora,” said Geoff Blaber, vice president
research, Americas, at CCS Insight.“This will
be evident in module, commercial deployment
and service announcements. However, until
we begin to see specific verticals start to scale,
fragmented proprietary approaches are likely
to coexist alongside 3GPP-based NB-IoT.”
5G
Inevitably, 5G will be a leading <strong>the</strong>me this
year with a shift in emphasis towards precommercial
launches in <strong>the</strong> US for fixedwireless
broadband services. Verizon has
already announced some level of
commercial deployment for next-generation
wireless in <strong>2017</strong>.
Kester Mann, principal analyst at CCS
Insight, said possible market fragmentation
will also be a key topic, “particularly in
relation to use of 28 GHz spectrum, a band
challenging for Europe due to use by <strong>the</strong>
satellite industry. Indeed, lofty ambitions in
o<strong>the</strong>r regions may see Europe’s role in 5G
come under new scrutiny despite
commendable recent ambition from <strong>the</strong>
European Commission”.
“You can be sure that <strong>the</strong>re will be a number
of announcements of devices using Google’s
Assistant, particular after Huawei said it will
be supporting Alexa on <strong>the</strong> Mate 9. Google
will want to make sure o<strong>the</strong>r Android phone
makers throw <strong>the</strong>ir weight behind its
platform, ra<strong>the</strong>r than Amazon’s Alexa.”

In tandem with 5G, CCS Insight also
expects to see a significant <strong>focus</strong> on LTE
Advanced Pro with a host of carriers touting
‘Gigabit LTE’ network upgrades.
“This is an important step in preparation
for 5G and builds on Qualcomm’s X16
modem and Snapdragon 835 chipset
announcements with more commercial
products likely to be announced in Barcelona.
We expect European and Asian operators to
follow <strong>the</strong> lead of US counterparts as AT&T,
Sprint and T-Mobile have all now made
commitments to Gigabit LTE deployments,”
added CCS Insight's Blaber.
REGULATION
As with network evolutions, it’s also
somewhat inevitable that regulation will
feature in operator keynote presentations at
<strong>MWC</strong>. Indeed, <strong>2017</strong> is also <strong>the</strong> year when a
key piece of European Union legislation
should come into force: <strong>the</strong> abolition of
roaming charges within EU member states.
Mann believes repetitive calls in recent
years for a more favourable regulatory regime
may be replaced by something new this year.

Barcelona has been hosting Mobile World Congress for 12 years now but, since
2011, <strong>the</strong> city is also <strong>the</strong> Mobile World Capital, a unique public-private partnership
that serves as a global beacon for digital transformation enabled by mobile
technologies. The Capital initiative drives mobile and digital transformation of
society while helping to improve people’s lives globally, <strong>focus</strong>ing on three areas:
<strong>the</strong> empowerment of new generations, professionals and citizens in <strong>the</strong> use of
digital technologies; <strong>the</strong> digital transformation of industries; and <strong>the</strong> acceleration
of innovation through digital-based entrepreneurship. Albert Cuesta reports.
THE CAPITAL PROGRAMMES ARE
POSITIVELY TRANSFORMING
EDUCATION, INDUSTRY AND THE
ECONOMY. PROGRAMMES INCLUDE:
• Mobile World Congress, <strong>the</strong> place where
mobile leaders ga<strong>the</strong>r, collaborate and conduct
business. Providing <strong>the</strong> planet’s best venue for
mobile industry networking, new business
opportunities and deal-making among more than
100,000 attendees. The event includes: a worldclass
conference featuring visionary keynotes and
thought provoking panel discussions; an
exhibition with more than 2,200 companies
displaying cutting-edge products and technologies
which define <strong>the</strong> future of mobile; <strong>the</strong> world’s best
opportunity for mobile industry networking; and
<strong>the</strong> annual Glomo Awards ceremony, which
recognises <strong>the</strong> most innovative mobile solutions
and initiatives from around <strong>the</strong> world.
• mSchools. Integrating mobile technologies
in <strong>the</strong> classroom enables access to updated
materials, improves collaboration and increases
student engagement, opening up new ways of
teaching and learning. That's why <strong>the</strong> Capital
started <strong>the</strong> mSchools program in 2012 with 360
Grade-3 and -4 students in Catalonia's high
schools and 90 of <strong>the</strong>ir teachers, to encourage
learning with mobile, improve digital skills and
entrepreneurial spirit, and to build an open

than 80.000 students, 2.500 teachers and 600

• Four Years From Now (4YFN). The startup
business platform of Mobile World Capital
Barcelona enables start-ups, investors,
corporations and public institutions to discover,
create and launch new ventures toge<strong>the</strong>r. 4YFN
offers unique connecting initiatives including
custom networking activities, technical abilities
workshops, congresses, community outreach
and open innovation programmes.
• mVenturesBCN. This acceleration
programme is designed to boost innovation
by enabling growth and scaling of pioneering
digital transformation start-ups. It has played
a role in bringing to Barcelona world-class
start-up accelerators <strong>focus</strong>ed on Big Data and
<strong>the</strong> Internet of Things, and has a technology
transfer programme in close cooperation with
research centres and universities to create a
new concept for transforming high-end
technology into new markets.
• Women4Tech. This programme, being
introduced at Mobile World Congress <strong>2017</strong>,
<strong>focus</strong>es on addressing and reducing <strong>the</strong>
gender gap in <strong>the</strong> mobile industry.
• d·LAB. This Capital programme was
established to accelerate <strong>the</strong> digital
transformation of society throughout <strong>the</strong>
ecosystem, expanding successful initiatives while
bridging <strong>the</strong> gap between technological
innovation and social impact. This is achieved by
launching societal challenges through calls for
proposals to select leading pilot projects. The first
d·LAB project explored <strong>the</strong> use of big data to
manage visitor traffic around <strong>the</strong> Sagrada Familia
and two new challenges have already been
launched to empower people with disabilities
through mobile technology and to enable citizens
to securely share <strong>the</strong>ir health data.
• Mobile World Centre. A permanent
venue located in <strong>the</strong> heart of Barcelona.
Open all year to <strong>the</strong> general public and in
partnership with Movistar, <strong>the</strong> Centre fosters
learning and knowledge exchange on <strong>the</strong>
latest trends in <strong>the</strong> mobile world. The current
main exhibit is <strong>the</strong> Virtual Escape Room, a
strategy game posing a number of puzzles
related to graphene, e-SIM and 5G, which are
solved using virtual reality headsets. O<strong>the</strong>r
exhibits cover technological convergence, <strong>the</strong>
professions of <strong>the</strong> future, Industry 4.0,
smartphone numbers and <strong>the</strong> evolution from
calling to comprehensive management.
• Mobile Connect. A simpler, safer way to
login to websites and apps without <strong>the</strong> need
for multiple passwords or usernames. The
user’s identity is verified through <strong>the</strong> mobile
phone.No personal information is made
available to <strong>the</strong> website or app without
logging in. The Mobile Connect system was
developed by <strong>the</strong> GSMA and is being
deployed by mobile carriers in several
countries including Spain.
• Mobile Week Barcelona. Mobile World
Capital promotes a week of open reflection
on <strong>the</strong> challenges, limits and opportunities of
digital transformation, and acts as a meeting
point between <strong>the</strong> digital and creative
industries. 10 dialogues, artistic creations and
inspirational routes will take place in each of
<strong>the</strong> ten districts of Barcelona.
The GSMA promoted <strong>the</strong> creation of
Mobile World Capital Barcelona and shares
<strong>the</strong> governance of <strong>the</strong> Foundation with <strong>the</strong>
national, regional and local governments and
Fira de Barcelona. It also has <strong>the</strong> support of
several major corporate partners. The
designation of Barcelona initially spanned
until <strong>the</strong> year 2018, but this was later
extended to 2023.
The growth of <strong>the</strong> Mobile World Congress
and <strong>the</strong> Mobile World Capital have been
mirrored by <strong>the</strong> evolution of Barcelona and
Catalonia. Since 2006, <strong>the</strong> Congress alone
has contributed millions to <strong>the</strong> local economy
and generated tens of thousands of part-time
jobs. Over <strong>the</strong> last decade, <strong>the</strong> number of
technology events held in <strong>the</strong> area has

goes live again

Content will be a major <strong>the</strong>me of this year’s Mobile World Congress. With
mobile operators attempting to become content players in <strong>the</strong>ir own right
(witness AT&T’s planned $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner) and
mobile networks becoming filled with online video streaming services, it
seems fitting to use this blog to highlight some of <strong>the</strong> great content Mobile
World Live TV (MWL TV) will be broadcasting in just a few days’ time.
Here’s my pick of what to watch on MWL TV, whe<strong>the</strong>r you are onsite at
<strong>the</strong> Fira Gran Via, in your hotel room, or following <strong>the</strong> action online from
<strong>the</strong> office:
hospitality and transportation, as shown by
<strong>the</strong> ever-increasing number of passengers
using <strong>the</strong> city airport and <strong>the</strong> growing number
of direct air connections.. Barcelona is
recognised as <strong>the</strong> world's number one city in
terms of congress delegates and fourth in <strong>the</strong>
number of international congresses. Even <strong>the</strong>
established trade shows of o<strong>the</strong>r industries
are evolving to reflect <strong>the</strong> growing impact of
technology on <strong>the</strong>ir sectors, from fashion to
food and agriculture to automobiles.
Besides <strong>the</strong> number of new companies
springing up in Barcelona in <strong>the</strong> fields of
fintech, e-health, energy, internet of things,
transportation and o<strong>the</strong>rs, many established
international enterprises are locating <strong>the</strong>ir
data-related units in <strong>the</strong> region. This has
been fuelled by <strong>the</strong> availability of a skilled
workforce, dedicated technology centres,
world-class higher education institutions
and research facilities. Barcelona is
consistently ranked among <strong>the</strong> smartest
cities in <strong>the</strong> world, having carried out
studies of internal mobility between
districts and having developed tools for
identifying and closing <strong>the</strong> digital divide
among residents. Catalonia has committed
itself to become a smart region aligned with
<strong>the</strong> Europe 2020 strategy of <strong>the</strong> European
Union, based on <strong>the</strong> five pillars of achieving
smarter cities, land, economy, government
and citizenship. Catalonia's economy has
become increasingly globalised: since 2008
<strong>the</strong> value of exports from <strong>the</strong> region to <strong>the</strong>
world exceeds <strong>the</strong> sales to <strong>the</strong> rest of Spain.
Also, <strong>the</strong> percentage of Catalan companies
selling online is higher than in Spain and in
<strong>the</strong> EU.
– Live coverage of <strong>the</strong> company that
has turned <strong>the</strong> entire TV industry on its
head: On Monday 27 Feb (6pm CET)
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings will take to <strong>the</strong>
stage and, as analyst Paolo Pescatore
points out in a recent blog, this is quite a
scoop for Congress. Indeed, it’s <strong>the</strong> first
time a leading company in <strong>the</strong> media
landscape has been given this important
slot. MWL TV will bring you <strong>the</strong> full
keynote, and we will also offer up a

debate too, featuring CCS Insight’s
Pescatore, Ericsson’s chief innovation

What’s new
this <strong>MWC</strong>?
Mobile World Congress, in one form or ano<strong>the</strong>r, has been around for many years. For
attendees wondering what will be new this year, <strong>the</strong> answer is: plenty. From <strong>the</strong> Youth Mobile
Festival (YoMo) to <strong>the</strong> Women4Tech initiative, to PokeGyms and PokeStops for fans of <strong>the</strong>
popular Niantec game, Mobile World Congress <strong>2017</strong> has a host of new initiatives planned.

YOMO: FULL STEAM AHEAD
The Youth Mobile Festival is GSMA’s new
global corporate social responsibility
programme to spark young people’s interest
in STEAM sectors (science, technology,
engineering, art & design and ma<strong>the</strong>matics)
and is aligned to <strong>the</strong> United Nation’s (UN)
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is supported by <strong>the</strong> Catalonian Ministry
for Education, and will bring toge<strong>the</strong>r more
than 100 stakeholders across <strong>the</strong> sectors,
including educational institutions,
professional bodies, R&D laboratories, and
business and industry leaders.
YoMo will bring “classroom learning to life”
for 20,000 students aged 10 to 16, as well as
teachers from Barcelona and across
Catalonia.
“We first ran YoMo at Mobile World
Congress Shanghai last July – <strong>the</strong> response
was tremendous and we are thrilled to now be
bringing YoMo to Barcelona,” John Hoffman,
CEO of GSMA Ltd, told Mobile World Daily.
Jeremy Buckle, event director, believes
<strong>the</strong>re is an “urgent need” to increase <strong>the</strong>
number of young people pursuing careers in
STEAM in order to combat <strong>the</strong> significant
skill gaps <strong>the</strong>y face.
The programme works in collaboration
with Mobile World Capital, of which
mSchools is an important part. mSchools
encourages educators to adopt mobile tech to
enhance learning, no matter what subject
<strong>the</strong>y are teaching.
Buckle also pointed out that while YoMo
will encourage young people to learn more
about STEAM subjects, “this won’t achieve
our desired goals unless <strong>the</strong> teachers adopt
this technology to continue this teaching”.
To this end <strong>the</strong>re will be an Educational
Resources Zone where teachers can network
and experience <strong>the</strong> innovations to use in <strong>the</strong>ir
classroom.
Buckle said he had been “overwhelmed”
with <strong>the</strong> high quality of STEAM engagement
across <strong>the</strong> region but found that most of it is
centred on small, community-<strong>focus</strong>ed
festivals, delivering <strong>the</strong> message in a “quiet,
unassuming way”.
YoMo wants to change this by bringing a
“large scale cohort” toge<strong>the</strong>r, opening up
<strong>the</strong>se subjects to young people not currently
exposed to such engagement and shining a
“global spotlight” on <strong>the</strong> work that is already
happening.
More than 200 activity providers will
deliver over 1,200 hours of live content
including a Fashion and Wearable technology
show produced in partnership with <strong>the</strong>
Institute of European Design called
“ECOcyborg”.
This will showcase wearable technology
designed by students via live art
performances, taking place twice a day.
At interactive booths, students will be able
to experiment with sensors and boards, solve
complex strategic challenges through
creativity, ingenuity and teamwork, and learn
how Minecraft can be used to solve
ma<strong>the</strong>matical formulas. They will also learn
about research in <strong>the</strong> field of biomaterials,
neurosciences and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
and talk to scientists “who are sure to
encourage <strong>the</strong>m to go deeper into <strong>the</strong> world
of research when <strong>the</strong>y are older,” said Buckle.
There will also be <strong>the</strong>atrical performances
where students can participate in a concert
made with instruments <strong>the</strong>y have built
<strong>the</strong>mselves, as well as lectures on how drugs
affect brains, <strong>the</strong> future of robotics and <strong>the</strong>
importance of telecommunications in
emergency situations.
The event is free. “We should have no
barriers for engagement to ensure this
programme is as inclusive as possible. A
young person should not be disadvantaged
from discovering <strong>the</strong> world of STEAM all
because of <strong>the</strong>ir circumstances,” Buckle
explained.
And according to Steven Russ, VP New
Products at GSMA, it is not just teachers and
students who will benefit, <strong>the</strong>re is also a
“value proposition” for mobile operators.
“Operators are a great example of ‘high
tech hiring companies’ that need new
employees with <strong>the</strong>se digital skills. And for
which, especially in Europe, <strong>the</strong>re is a real
shortage. The hiring companies are on <strong>the</strong>
o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong> digital skills gap,” said Russ.
“We should have no

WHAT'S NEW AT <strong>MWC</strong>? | FEATURE
WOMEN4TECH: NARROWING THE
GENDER GAP
Women4Tech will provide a global platform
to <strong>focus</strong> specifically on increasing <strong>the</strong>
inclusion of women in <strong>the</strong> mobile industry
and showcasing best practices for female
leadership.
Like YoMo, it supports <strong>the</strong> UN’s SDGs,
particularly gender equality.
Renee Jimenez, marketing
communications manager at GSMA, believes
<strong>the</strong>re are not enough women working in <strong>the</strong>
telecommunications sector, and certainly not
in <strong>the</strong> most senior levels.
“Companies with a gender-diverse
workforce are better able to innovate and
outperform <strong>the</strong>ir competition. There is a
positive correlation between <strong>the</strong> percentage
of women in management and companies'
profitability,” she explained, adding that <strong>the</strong>
gender gap is a critical issue for <strong>the</strong> mobile
industry.
“Programmes such as Women4Tech are
helping us to move in <strong>the</strong> right direction. We
need to make women in mobile and ICT <strong>the</strong>
norm ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> exception,” she said.
Women4Tech supports <strong>the</strong> UN SDG of
gender equality by showcasing best practices
and industry action in <strong>the</strong> mobile and digital
industry. It aims to integrate gender equality
into <strong>the</strong> mainstream of work environments
and labour related policies to promote
equality of opportunity and treatment.
It is an outgrowth of GSMA’s Connected
Women programme that hopes to give
attendees – women and men – insights into
best practices for building diversity and
highlight <strong>the</strong> “amazing work” women are
already doing in mobile and solutions to
address challenges.
It will also create an ongoing dialogue to
drive industry action for female leadership.
Women4Tech helped put toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>
‘Hack_D_Gap Global Challenge’ aimed at
entrepreneurs, startups, and coders to create
innovative solutions, products or services that
drive gender diversity and gender equality in
<strong>the</strong> tech industry.
It received more than 60 projects, from 16
countries based on three <strong>the</strong>mes: digital
awareness tools, HR management apps and
work-life balance apps.
The six finalists include Adalab from Spain,
a social start-up <strong>focus</strong>ed on closing <strong>the</strong> digital
gender gap through a training and internship
programme for women, and social learning
platform Work Wide Women from Italy. The
finalists will have a demo pitch in front of a
live jury and audience, with <strong>the</strong> winner being
announced 28 February.
Women4Tech will also include panel
discussions and interactive workshops.
NEXTECH HALL 8.0: THE DRONE
ZONE AND MORE
Hall 8.0 always offers attendees something
exciting. This time it will <strong>focus</strong> on next
generation technology, including an area
dedicated “to <strong>the</strong> most forward-thinking,
innovative companies currently disrupting
<strong>the</strong> mobile ecosystem”.
The NEXTech Pavilion will showcase
companies at <strong>the</strong> forefront of virtual and
augmented reality (AR), robotics, and AI.
A ‘Drone Zone’ will feature some of <strong>the</strong>
largest commercial and industrial drone
manufacturers in <strong>the</strong> world, while <strong>the</strong> IoT
Pavilion is expanding in size this year to
highlight innovations in <strong>the</strong> Internet of
Things.
There will also be a NEXTech Lab, <strong>the</strong> only
open <strong>the</strong>atre on <strong>the</strong> show, where companies
provide thought leadership and successful
case studies. It will include a mini Drone
Summit on 2 March.
<strong>MWC</strong> account director Oliver Howard
described <strong>the</strong> lab as an “intimate <strong>the</strong>atre”
<strong>focus</strong>ed on tech that is changing <strong>the</strong> world.
He also said it is important that an event
like <strong>MWC</strong> continues to evolve in line with <strong>the</strong>
latest advances in mobile.
AR/VR, robotics and AI are at <strong>the</strong> forefront
and a dedicated area to showcase <strong>the</strong>se
technologies “is <strong>the</strong> only logical step”, he
said, adding that his team is pleased to have
more space to expand NEXTech Hall 8.0.
He believes “setting this hall as a
destination for all things ‘Next Generation’
means <strong>the</strong>re is finally an area at <strong>the</strong> event
where specific technologies are showcased”.
And Howard is particularly excited about
<strong>the</strong> Drone Zone. ”This is <strong>the</strong> first time we
have been able to set up a specific Drone
Zone at <strong>MWC</strong>. Delegates can expect to see
some incredible flight demonstrations in <strong>the</strong>
numerous Drone Cages that are being set up.”
Summing up, <strong>the</strong> NEXTech Hall 8.0 is
designed to offer attendees a glimpse into <strong>the</strong>
future.
It will help <strong>the</strong>m understand how next
generation initiatives and technology is
already shaping and expanding <strong>the</strong> future of
mobile technology, <strong>the</strong> team behind <strong>the</strong> Hall
8.0 told Mobile World Daily.
WHAT ELSE?
Pokemon Go fans can rejoice. Not only will
Niantic CEO John Hanke be a keynote
speaker at this year’s event, but thanks to a
partnership with <strong>the</strong> company, PokeStops and
PokeGyms will be placed around <strong>the</strong> venue to
highlight new features and areas of <strong>the</strong> event,
such as Innovation City and networking
lounges.
“Players can look for our co-branded
GSMA/Niantic locations within <strong>the</strong> game, and
discover new areas of <strong>MWC</strong> along <strong>the</strong> way. It’s
a great icebreaker to make new connections, in
game and in person,” said Scott Griffin,
partnership marketing coordinator.
And continuing <strong>the</strong> AR <strong>the</strong>me, <strong>the</strong> GSMA’s
‘SDGs in Action’ mobile app will enable <strong>MWC</strong>
attendees to collect SDG ‘goals’ from various
image targets situated throughout Fira Gran
Via. The goals can be collected throughout
<strong>the</strong> course of Mobile World Congress, with
<strong>the</strong> game culminating in <strong>the</strong> GSMA’s
Innovation City in Hall 4. Prizes will be
awarded on a daily basis.
Meanwhile 4 Years From Now (4YFN)
Barcelona <strong>2017</strong>, sponsored by <strong>the</strong> European
Commission and located at Fira Montjuic, has
launched a matchmaking app called
‘4YFNetwork’ that hopes to bring
entrepreneurs closer to potential corporate
partners and investors.
With more than 101,000 attendees
expected to visit from over 200 countries,
along with more than 2,200 exhibitors, this is
sure to be <strong>the</strong> biggest and best <strong>MWC</strong> yet.

need for internet.
PostBoard is a community-driven bulletin board accessible through interactive SMS and
audio. Users can buy and sell, find jobs, form interest groups, and even set up alerts for
when specific posts are added by o<strong>the</strong>r people which are of interest (e.g. cars for sale).
ONEm is delivered through partner mobile operators and has started in East Africa with
Smart Group. Many more operators are rolling out <strong>the</strong> service in coming months. In a world
