your project.
POLYPROPYLENE (PP)
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. A saturated addition polymer made from the
monomer propylene, it is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids.
Com m only Used For: Electrical hardware, chemical tanks, cable insulation, household goods and packaging
LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (LDPE)
Polyethylene is a widely used, inexpensive, thermoplastic. It has good inherent lubricity, and is easy to process. Polyethylene has
good to excellent chemical resistance. It is also soft and cannot be used in temperatures much above 150. As a family, they are
light in weight and possess toughness, chemical resistance, impermeability as well as excellent electrical insulating properties.
Low density polyethylene is the softest and most flexible version of this material. It has high elongation giving it excellent impact
strength. This is offset by its permanent deformation upon impact.
Com m only Used For: Consumer products, houseware items, electronic wire/cable insulators and medical products.
HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE)
Polyethylene is a widely used, inexpensive, thermoplastic. It has good inherent lubricity, and is easy to process. Polyethylene has
good to excellent chemical resistance. It is also soft and cannot be used in temperatures much above 150. As a family, they are
light in weight and possess toughness, chemical resistance, impermeability as well as excellent electrical insulating properties.
High density polyethylene is the hardest and stiffest version of this material. It does not have the impact strength of low density,
but is more resilient.
Com m only Used For: Consumer products, houseware items, electronic wire/cable insulators and medical products.
PM PLASTICS - MATERIALS PAGE 1 OF 2
POLYURETHANE (PUR)
Solid Polyurethane is an elastomeric material of exceptional physical properties including toughness, flexibility, and resistance
to abrasion and temperature. Polyurethane has a broad hardness range, from eraser soft to bowling ball hard. Other
polyurethane characteristics include extremely high flex-life, high load-bearing capacity and outstanding resistance to weather,
ozone, radiation, oil, gasoline and most solvents.
Com m only Used For: Automotive suspension bushings, cushions, electrical compounds, hard plastic parts.
POLY-VINYL-CHLORIDE (PVC)
PVC has good flexibility, is flame retardant, and has good thermal stability, a high gloss, and low (to no) lead content. Polyvinyl
chloride molding compounds can be extruded, injection molded, compression molded, calendered, and blow molded to form
a huge variety of products, either rigid or flexible depending on the amount and type of plasticizers used.
Com m only Used For: Automobile instruments panels, sheathing of electrical cables, pipes, doors.
ACRYLONITRILE BUTADIENE STYRENE (ABS)
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of
polybutadiene. The styrene gives the plastic a shiny, impervious surface. The butadiene, a rubbery substance, provides
resilience even at low temperatures. A variety of modifications can be made to improve impact resistance, toughness, and
heat resistance.
Com m only Used For: Automotive body parts, dashboards, wheel covers
POLYSTYRENE (PS)
Naturally clear, polystyrene exhibits excellent chemical and electrical resistance. Special high gloss and high impact grades are
widely available. This easy to manufacture plastic has poor resistance to UV light.
Com m only Used For: Packaging, bottles, toys,
POLYCARBONATE (PC)
Amorphous polycarbonate polymer offers a unique combination of stiffness, hardness and toughness. It exhibits excellent
weathering, creep, impact, optical, electrical and thermal properties. Because of its extraordinary impact strength, it is the
material for car bumpers, helmets of all kinds and bullet-proof glass substitutes.
Com m only Used For: Bumpers, headlamp lenses, business machines, consumer products, telecommunications, medical
products and mechanical goods.
ACRYLIC/ POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE (PMMA)
Poly(methyl methacrylate also known as acrylic or acrylic glass as well as by the trade names Plexiglas, Acrylite, Lucite, and
Perspex among several others (see below), is a transparent thermoplastic often used in sheet form as a lightweight or
shatter-resistant alternative to glass. The same material can be utilized as a casting resin, in inks and coatings, and has many
other uses.
Com m only Used For: Signs, displays, car light covers, wash basins & baths, windows and screen
