LIGHT<br />
Sunlight streams through the red hills of<br />
Southern Utah, casting intricate shadows<br />
through the magnificent valley known as Bryce<br />
Canyon, an incredible expanse of deep-cut<br />
crevices and delicate sculptures in sandstone. In<br />
the late sun, these spires come alive in gorgeous<br />
hues of pink, yellow, white and orange. The<br />
Paiute Indians who lived here 1,200 years ago<br />
spoke of the To-when-an-ung-wa, the Legend<br />

People, who roamed the land long before humans. They were the many creatures of the desert: lizards,<br />
birds and scorpions…though, back then, they looked like humans. When they were bad, Coyote<br />
turned them into stone right where they stood. You can see them now, crammed cliff to cliff, the paint<br />
still on their faces just as they were before they became rocks.<br />
Standing on the cliff overlooking Bryce Canyon, you can easily imagine the Legend People casting<br />
their long shadows across the eons. There!...a lizard man...Over there! a bird lady. Your right-side brain<br />
might marvel at the astonishing forces of nature that were let loose in this canyon, the wind, rain and<br />
frost eroding the rock over millions of years. I am always seeking to understand the natural world<br />
better but sometimes, I am happy to let my left side brain run wild, to embrace the legend and simply<br />
enjoy the magic of this place.<br />
