Most instructions are executed at a single cycle
...but not all of them!
Some multi-cycle instructions read the source
operands at one cycle and write the result at a
different one
Branches read the jump target at cycle i and
jump to it at cycle i+5
In the mean time, if the jump target was a
register, its value may have changed
