ROI - “Return On Investment”
Dick Withnell
Withnell Auto Group
I found out early in my business career
the new math of 1 + 1 is greater than 2.
In the economic/political environment
in which we do business, it’s very amateurish
for one to think he or she can be
successful by going it alone, while trying
to compete in services and selling widgets.
This is exactly why I believe being a
member of the Salem Area Chamber of
Commerce is a basic business necessity — not an accessory,
add-on, or even a “social club.” Coming together and being a
member of an advocacy for business organization just makes
good economic sense.
An individual business person who is trying to meet payrolls
and satisfy customers does not have the time to take the
pulse of regulations, political activity, and promote the marketplace
by themselves. One can see that the Salem Area
Chamber of Commerce, plus your business entity, becomes
something greater than 1+1.
If you are not a member of the Salem Area Chamber of
Commerce, contact any one of us who are on the Board of
Directors or Kyle Sexton, Director of Member Services.
You will immediately see the value of your investment and a
significant ROI by using the activities presented by the
Chamber.
No matter what size your company, or what stage of business
you are in — new or long-term — the Chamber is a
great investment. If you’re not a member, become one now;
if you are, be sure to participate to get the total ROI.
New video promotes downtown Salem
The Salem Downtown Association (SDA) has completed production
of an exciting new video showcasing the art, culture, history,
architecture, and energy of its downtown.
“Salem is a pioneer in creating a promotional video like this. It
tells the wonderful story of our vibrant downtown and its many
assets,” said Rebecca Maitland, co-creator of the video.
Along with Salem-News.com’s Tim King, Ms. Maitland, marketing
director for the Reed Opera House, came to the SDA and
proposed the DVD concept. With a grant from the City of Salem
and matching sponsorship from Salem Electric, the team put
together a compelling picture of the downtown for use by SDA
members and others who are marketing downtown.
“It was an amazing experience, shooting scenes of downtown
buildings, storefronts, sidewalks and events. Downtown Salem has
so much to be proud of, it photographed wonderfully,” said Tim,
the DVD photographer and director.
The video blends night scenes, historic pictures and contemporary
scenes to communicate the vitality of downtown Salem and
includes narration that tells the story of a wonderful destination
for shopping and entertainment.
“The Salem DVD grabs the interest of the viewer and showcases
the vibrancy and excitement of our downtown,” said Mike
McLaran, CEO of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. “It
features the art, architecture and history of our city and presents
Salem as a great place to live, work, play and shop.”
SDA President Cori Frauendiener, MaPS Credit Union, plans
to share the DVD with a wide assortment of downtown advocates,
including SCVB, SEDCOR, the
DVD Premiere
Chamber, the City of Salem and
Willamette University.
“The Salem Downtown
Association is building on the
downtown renaissance and providing
our partners with a promotional
tool that recognizes that a
vibrant downtown image and
experience is essential for economic
development in our entire
community,” said Cori. “We hope
this will lead to more cooperation
and communicates our shared
vision of making Salem’s downtown
a magnet for residents, shoppers and visitors.”
Chief Exective Officer
Salem Area
Chamber of Commerce
One month to go and
another year has
passed. I hope you
have found time to
reflect on the many
blessings we enjoy in
this city and in our
great country. We
have much for which
to be thankful.
Two individuals I
would especially like
to thank are Sue Parsons and Janet
Clark. These two women have recently
resigned from the Chamber Board. Both
have given incredible energy to this organization
and their commitment, leadership,
and passion for excellence has made a very
positive difference in our organization and
the community. Thank you Sue and Janet.
We will miss you.
With the new year in sight and the elections
now in the past, many are gearing up
for the next legislative session with much
anticipation. Before legislative leaders get
too excited about what it is they want to
do, it would serve them well to study what
is working in our state. What has been
accomplished in the Salem area should be
used as a model.
People and institutions have come
together to increase public safety, attack
the use and distribution of meth, reach out
to embrace and care for foster children and
mobilize churches to be neighborhood
centers just to name a few examples.
While there is still much to be done, none
of the great strides have been accomplished
by government taxing business but
rather by embracing and supporting business
and allowing business to join in leadership
to help address the issues.
Legislators must resist the urge to see
government as needing to fix all the problems.
Rather, they should help lead and
facilitate the non-government resources
like business, the faith community, nonprofits,
and local neighborhoods etc. to
own and fix the problems. Allow business
to prosper without making business the
target of taxes and then collaborate
together to make positive things happen.
That formula, if followed, will lead to a
successful session.
May you and your family experience the
great peace and joy of the season and let us
continue to unite in our efforts to make the
Salem area a great place for business to
prosper and for all families to live in peace.
If you would like to find out more about
providing foster care for children or providing
a break for foster parents call Jason
Walling at 503-378-8619. The need is
great.
Salem Chambers’ 10th
Awards (Page 5) and the
Evening d’ Elegance (Page
that provide an opportunity
to celebrate all the positive
things happening in
our community.
The Crystal Apple®
Awards gives the Salem area business community
the opportunity to honor both public and
private Salem-Keizer educators for making significant
contributions in the lives of children
and youth. This year’s event was truly a celebration
for those nominees and recipients of the
Crystal Apple®.
Special thanks to our Crystal Apple® Award
presenting sponsors: Mountain West Group,
AmeriTitle, and Washington Mutual.
Thank you to the entire Crystal Apple® team
led by team leader, Mike DeRochier of
AmeriTitle, and coordinators Mary VanNatta,
VanNatta Public Relations, and Susan
Ingersoll, on staff at the Salem Chamber.
Events such as these require tremendous support
from many Chamber members who generously
volunteer their time and resources.
Evening d’ Elegance is our black tie benefit
gala that takes place in the month of
November each year and serves as a special
event for the Salem Area Chamber of
Commerce. This year the theme was an
“Evening in Paris” and once again it was a
night to remember. Kudos to event team leaders
Teresa Maurmann, Ryan Albritton of
presenting sponsor U.S. Bank and Chamber
special events manager Sharron Seideman.
Take a look at the back cover of this issue for
pictures, sponsor acknowledgements and highlights
of the gala.
We also need to acknowledge all the new
businesses opening throughout our community.
You may not realize it, but we have had
record numbers of ribbon cuttings and new
member businesses this year — just take a look
at Pages 10 and 11. New and expanding businesses
are a great barometer of a community’s
business momentum. Congratulations and welcome
to these new members of the Chamber
business community.
We are a growing and giving community. It’s
appropriate to celebrate all the positive things
happening especially when we, as a business
community, recognize that our success enables
us to give to the areas that need our support.
Our hope is that this holiday season will be rich
in blessings, both for you and for the lives you
touch.

The Chamber: Promoting the Community
Crystal Apple Awards®
Every seat on the main floor was full at the Historic
Elsinore Theatre as educators, business people, community
members and volunteers who attended the
10th Annual Crystal Apple Awards® on November
16. Event attendees found themselves touched by the
stories of teachers, classified staff personnel and
administrators who have gone above and beyond to
educate and influence our students in a positive way.
Nominees flowed down a red carpet in front of the
Historic Elsinore Theatre past flashing paparazzi and
to the Chamber’s Live from the Red Carpet hosts, Patti Woods and
Brent DeHart. Their walk was broadcast live inside the theater by Allied
Video Productions, Inc.
Chamber President Ross Carey of U.S. Bank welcomed all and introduced
the evening’s entertainment, YouTube sensation and inspirational
speaker, Judson Laipply. Judson recently appeared on The Today
Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Ellen, Video City, and E!
and is the creator of “The Evolution of Dance.”
Amanda Fleer of Western Oregon University was honored with a
$2,400 scholarship by two former Crystal Apple recipients, who are also
WOU graduates.
Fifty-three outstanding educators were nominated and twelve received
the award. Crystal Apple team members and Chamber business represntatives
went into the worksites to honor nominees personally in front of
thier students and colleagues.
“Today was one of the BEST days I have had since I started this job
five years ago!” said recipient Jim Henry of West Salem High School and
now Crossler Middle School. “I was given a fantastic gift basket, pictures,
and even a box of donuts — BUT the real big thing was the nod of
approval from my peers! That was priceless! Thank you so much.”
Crystal Apples were handed out by CEO of the Salem Chamber, Mike
McLaran; Salem-Keizer Education Foundation President, Chuck
Swank; and Salem-Keizer Public Schools Superintendent, Sandra Husk.
They were joined by sponsor representatives, Brad Moore, AmeriTitle;
Marlene Wellin, Coldwell Banker Mountain West Real Estate; and Jeff
Lang, Washington Mutual Bank. Special thanks were given to the CAA
Team Chair, Mike DeRochier of AmeriTitle.
The financial support from many local businesses and individuals make
it possible for the Salem Chamber, the Salem-Keizer Education
Foundation and the Salem Keizer Public Schools to recognize excellence
in education. All nominees are listed at www.salemchamber.org.
My experiences with Leadership Youth
have been nothing but wonderful. Our
October trip was no exception. The
Leadership Youth group traveled to several
of the historic wonders of Salem.
We looked back into the past as we traveled
around the fascinating houses of
Mission Mill Museum, and the Bush
House in Bush’s Pasture Park. It was
awe-inspiring to see how people lived in
Salem so many years ago.
I especially enjoyed the Bush House, because of its fantastic
décor. I hadn’t ever been there, but now I want to go
again!
After eating a delicious lunch made by Croissant and
Comapny, we toured the Historic Elsinore Theatre. This
was my favorite part of the day. I’ve been on the Elsinore
tour a few times before, but each time I discover something
new. I was transported to another world as we looked at the
dressing rooms and castle-like features of the theatre. The
tour ended spectacularly with Rick Parks playing the organ
for us. The organ music was an impressive medley of everything
from Star Wars to show tunes. Along with the organ,
there was a very unique piano that is worth looking for next
time you’re at the Elsinore. We left that tour with smiles on
our faces.
On the bus ride back to the Chamber of Commerce I
reflected on the day. I never knew much about Salem’s past
before, but after this trip, I am happily informed about its a
very interesting history.
Business groups sign
up for drug-free work
place initiative
A statewide initiative aimed at
tripling the number of Oregon
employers who adopt and enforce
drug-free workplace policies by
the end of 2008 is adding seven
more communities as pilot sites.
The Oregon Department of
Human Services initiative is
adding two Portland business
organizations and the chambers
of commerce of Astoria-
Warrenton, Cannon Beach,
Keizer, McMinnville, Salem and
Seaside.
Already participating in the
effort, managed on contract by
the Tualatin-based nonprofit
Workdrugfree, were the Bend,
Klamath County and Prineville-
Crook County chambers. The
three Clatsop County chambers
and the Salem and Keizer chambers
said they would collaborate
as regional projects.
“These business organizations
see first-hand the harmful consequences
of addiction,” said Karen
Wheeler, DHS addictions policy
manager. “By ensuring their
workplaces are drug free, they are
saying they care about customer
safety, workforce quality and promoting
the well-being of employees,
families and communities.”
The drug-free workplace initiative
is an element of the Oregon
Business Plan, a 12-point strategy
that state business leaders have
crafted to strengthen the state’s
commerce, payrolls and economy.
DHS provides funding and staff
support.
Mimi Bushman, who manages
Workdrugfree as a program of
the Oregon Nurses Foundation,
said participating chambers will
receive technical assistance to
write drug-free workplace policies,
train supervisors, join
employee assistance programs
and receive reduced rates on
employee drug testing.
'Becoming a drug-free workplace
will cost the small employer
less than $500 initially," Bushman
said, "and that cost should be
more than offset by reducing
employee absenteeism, accidents
and other costly risks resulting
from employee drug use.”

Sun Quest launches
charter air service
Sun Quest Executive Air Charter,
Northwest Division flew on to
the scene Nov. 14, hosting an
open house and Salem Area
Sun Quest Executive Air Charter
Chamber of Commerce ribbon
cutting. Various community
members and leaders came out to
welcome the new charter jet service
to the Salem airport.
Former Congressman and Air
Force and commercial pilot,
Denny Smith and his wife
Deanna own the Citation II Jet.
Smith also owns Eagle
Newspapers, Inc., a family firm
founded by his father, Elmo
Smith in 1933. Today, the company
has over 400 employees and
publishes 14 newspapers, four
specialty publications, has four
printing operations and two mailing
services located throughout
Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
The Citation II jet can carry up
to eight passengers and is
International Operations
Approved. It can fly up to 415
mph and is able to travel 1500
miles before refueling. The jet
also has the benefit of a two pilot
crew, which allows for increased
safety and service to passengers.
“Chartering air service is a safe
and enjoyable way to travel. We
have thorough security procedures.
You know who is on the
plane with you. You are picked up
right at your house and fly to
your destination on your schedule,”
said Denny. “Some groups
have found that it is more efficient
to fly to somewhere like
Bandon Dunes to play golf than
it is to drive and stay overnight.”
Wal-Mart brings $4 generic
prescription program to Oregon
Oregon customers of Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) can
now participate in Wal-Mart’s $4
generic prescription program,
Wal-Mart President and CEO
Lee Scott recently announced.
“Working families, seniors and
the uninsured in Oregon have
struggled with rising healthcare
costs for far too long. With this
program, we are able to bring real
solutions to a real problem that
affects real people. We are thrilled
that we could bring this program
to the residents of Oregon much
sooner than we anticipated,” said
Bill Simon, executive vice president
of the Professional Services
Division for Wal-Mart.
The $4 generic prescription
program will now be available in
the 30 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club
pharmacies throughout the state.
According to the Kaiser Family
Foundation, there are 463,480
Medicare beneficiaries in Oregon,
and this program will help alleviate
a challenge if those seniors
have fallen into the “doughnut
hole” coverage gap in their
Medicare Part D prescription
drug plans. Seniors who do hit
that coverage gap have to pay 100
percent of their prescription
costs.
The $4 generics program also
provides affordable medicines for
the estimated 592,070 Oregonians
who lack health insurance and
therefore sometimes avoid filling
prescriptions. Wal-Mart also estimates
that the program will save
money for Oregon’s Medicaid
program. Details: walmart.com;
Community Action Drug Prevention
Network busy as the holidays approach
Lisa Miller
Community Action Drug
Prevention Network
Lisa Miller, the newly appointed Program
Director for Community Action Drug
Prevention Network (a local non-profit program
governed by Mid-Willamette Valley Community
Action Agency), is already deeply invested in
several committee partnership supported and
promoted by the Salem Chamber. One such
committee, which includes representatives from
US Bank, Umpqua Bank, Salem Area Chamber
of Commerce, Salem Police Department,
Marion County Sheriff ’s Department, and NO
METH: Not in MY Neighborhood, has been reaching out to businesses
and consumers alike, encouraging them to take steps in reducing identity
theft this holiday season.
According to local police, identity theft is still running rampant through
our community and is a major funding source for methamphetamine
users and distributors. The identity theft committee has dedicated hundreds
of hours to the campaign, asking businesses to implement a policy
requiring photo ID verification on all debit / credit purchases, as well as
collecting thumbprints on checks accepted. By requiring photo ID verification
with card purchases and obtaining thumbprints on checks, businesses
will be deterring thieves, who will move on to easier targets. This
is a win-win situation for businesses and consumers alike as businesses
see reduced losses due to fraud and consumers take comfort knowing
their stolen name, credit card and checkbook is not so easy to use.
With holiday shopping just around the corner, the committee urges
businesses to join with consumers by supporting the identity theft initiative.
Many local retailers throughout Salem/Keizer have joined in the
fight such as Roth’s Fresh Markets, who began taking thumbprints on
checks at their cashier cages early last year. According to managers at local
stores, fraud is nonexistent now thanks to the thumbprint requirement.
Policies requiring photo ID on card transactions are popping up all over
town as well, in such places as Del Taco, Santiam Bicycle, Engelberg
Antiques, Downtown Shutterbug, The Body Shop, Buckle, Sunglass Hut,
Scott's Cycle, and many other establishments around town. Newly developed
black and white "WARNING- For your protection, we ask for ID"
stickers are available to businesses who pledged to enact or enforce policies
requiring photo ID with debit/credit transactions.
As consumers, please take the time to offer up your photo ID and
thank the business for doing its part. As business partners, create and/or
enforce identification policies for your and your customers protection.
Police launch “Business Ewatch”
The Salem Police Department is starting a new electronic information
sharing system with local businesses called “Business
Ewatch.” This program is similar to an existing program called
“Crimenet.” Crimenet sends out bi-weekly crime prevention tips
to citizens who are signed up. This message is received automatically
by the registrants once signed up and provides crime trends,
tips, and updates on local police activities and events.
Business Ewatch will work very similarly, but will focus on
those crimes and tips that directly relate to local businesses. For
example, if there are a string of local robberies or burglaries, the
police department can send out suspect descriptions or other
information to be on the look out for. If there are local events
that can affect businesses, such as major street closures due to
police activity we can send this information via Business Ewatch
as well.
To sign up for Business Ewatch you can go to the city of Salem
website at www.cityofsalem.net, click on the Police Department,
then you will find Business Ewatch under Crime Prevention.
Simply ckick on the icon and submit your email address and wait
to receive business crime prevention tips. For more information
about preventing crime, or submitting business crime tips, contact
the Crime Prevention Unit at 503-588-6175.
