Margaret River
Shiraz –
half price
The Margaret River is
located 170 miles
south of Perth
Nullarbor Plain Margaret River Shiraz,
2007, Western Australia, 14.5%
From one of the best Margaret River
vintages in recent years, this is a first
class Shiraz that’s wonderfully rich and
assertive. Lively aromas of plums and
blackberries are followed by chunky
black fruit flavours with just a tantalising
hint of pepper and spice. At half price it
is exceptional value.
The Limestone Coast is the world’s largest limestone resource
➽
exceptional too.
Today there are even
more wine regions being
developed along the limestone
outcrops. One of the first was
Padthaway, where the slightly
warmer climate produces awardwinning
Chardonnays and topnotch
Shiraz. Neighbouring
Wrattonbully is showing excellent
promise for Merlot and Cabernet
Sauvignon.
However, it’s the area around
Bordertown which has taken the
baton more recently. Situated to the
north of Padthaway near the border
with Victoria, this relatively small
region is starting to produce
outstanding, deep flavoured reds.
Doctors of wine
At the start of the
19th century
many English
doctors believed
firmly in the
medicinal
properties of
wine. As a result,
two graduates
from St Bart’s
Hospital, London,
decided to
emigrate to Australia to
establish their own wineries.
Their names were Dr Penfold
(top) and Dr Lindeman.
Western Australia
The fastest growing wine region
in the country
We end our journey in Western
Australia, the country’s largest state.
The capital, Perth, is one of the
remotest cities in the world and is
over 1,600 miles by road from
Adelaide. Settlers first planted vines
in Western Australia as early as
1829, in the Swan Valley just
outside of Perth.
Surrounded by desert, the Swan
Valley is the hottest of Australia’s wine
regions and summer temperatures
can easily soar to 45˚C. Such heat
is perfect for producing fortified
wines, and for decades these sticky,
sweet wines helped make the Swan
Valley Australia’s largest wineproducing
region.
Today, the majority of winemakers
are located south of Perth
in the much cooler south-west
corner of the state. In less than half
a days drive from Perth takes us to
the Margaret River where cooling
breezes off the Indian Ocean keep
the temperatures lower, enabling
a more European style of winemaking.
Here, two of the most
successful grapes are Cabernet
Sauvignon, which arguably
produces a more elegant wine than
Coonawarra; and Chardonnay,
which can match Burgundy for its
complexity and ageing ability.
Some of the Margaret River’s
most famous wines are made from
blends. Cabernet Sauvignon can be
blended with either Merlot in a
classic Bordeaux style – or with
Shiraz to create a uniquely Aussie
wine full of rich peppery fruit.
For whites, the grapes of choice
are Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
The results can be amazingly elegant,
rivalling the very best of Bordeaux.
Our long journey finally ends
as we continue on to the southern
coast, where we come to one of
Australia’s most recently planted
wine regions – the Great Southern.
Here the cool climate produces
some fine Rieslings and attractively
peppery Shiraz.
fabulous wines are both classic Western Australia blends
and terrific examples of Evans & Tate’s wine-making skill.
Evans & Tate Classic Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, 2008,
Margaret River, 12.5% This delicious blend of Semillon
and Sauvignon Blanc is a true Margaret River classic.
The Semillon lends distinctive concentrated characters
of melon and passion fruit, while the Sauvignon Blanc
Evans & Tate Classic Shiraz Cabernet Merlot, 2004,
Western Australia, 14% A really sumptuous red
