12 / Lions Foundation of Canada Annual Report 2007~2008 Purina® Walk for Dog Guides Since its debut in 1985, the Purina ® Walk for Dog Guides has become Lions Foundation of Canada’s largest annual fundraiser. Th e Purina ® Walk for Dog Guides continues to be an integral aspect of Lions Foundation of Canada’s fundraising. It is truly a national event that is held in almost 200 communities and in every province across Canada! Th e Purina ® Walk for Dog Guides continues to help make daily lives better for those we serve. Volunteer organizers and committees continue to receive the satisfaction of helping people with physical and medical disabilities. With the generous support of our national sponsors, 100% of the donations collected go towards providing the gift of mobility, safety and independence at no cost to Canadians from coast-to-coast. Th e cost of raising and training a Dog Guide is not.” 14 / Lions Foundation of Canada Annual Report 2007~2008 Fundraising Report With no government funding, Lions Foundation of Canada has grown from a dream to an established and rapidly expanding charity that contributes in a very real way to the day-to-day lives of Canadians with disabilities. Since its inception twenty fi ve years ago, over 1,300 specially trained Dog Guides have been placed with Canadians with a visual, hearing, medical or other physical disability. Each Dog Guide team costs approximately $20,000 to raise, train and place, yet with the support of many, Dog Guides are provided at no cost to qualifi ed applicants. From before a puppy is even born until aft er a Dog Guide team graduates, thousands of people help every step of the way. Whether it’s a breeder donating a breeding dog, an organization or individual sponsoring a Dog Guide team, a Lions Club hosting a fundraising event, someone sending in $25, or a grant from a foundation for class expenses, each and every donation makes a diff erence. General Funding • General donations from donors across the country • Wish List for various equipment and supplies • Donating Air Miles, HBC Rewards and Shopper’s Optimum points • Donating prize items that can be turned into cash at auctions and raffl es as part of fundraising events Dog Guide Sponsorship Sponsorship covers an important portion of the costs of raising and training each Dog Guide team. • Canine Vision Canada – $6,000 • Hearing Ear Dog Guides – $4,000 • Special Skills Dog Guides – $10,000 • Seizure Response Dog Guides – $10,000 Corporate Support Corporations have many opportunities to support Dog Guides. Whichever way is chosen, each gift makes a diff erence in providing deserving Canadians with a Dog Guide. • Donate funds to purchase items, or as a general donation • Provide in-kind supplies or services to help defray operating costs • Sponsor an event or Dog Guide team • Choose Dog Guides as their charity of choice • Donate a portion of sales to Dog Guides • Have a payroll deduction plan • Provide matching gift s for donations from employees • Provide volunteer time of employees to the Foundation • Designate proceeds from their own special event, such as a golf tournament Special Events • Host or participate in a Purina® Walk for Dog Guides • Host golf tournaments benefi ting Dog Guides • Lions Foundation of Canada hosts several special events throughout the year – Sit, Stay, Bid! Auction, Open Houses, Canine Challenge and more. • Many organizations, companies and Lions clubs dedicate proceeds from their own special fundraising events Lions Awards & Fellowships • Life Membership Awards to honour a Lion or individual • Fellowships to recognize an “All Round Good Lion” • Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowships to recognize outstanding Canadian Lions and other deserving recipients while building an endowment fund for Lions Foundation of Canada Commemorative Giving • Memorial Forest to commemorate the life of a loved one with a special tree • Pet Wall Memorial to commemorate the life of your pet with a plaque • In Memoriam to honour a recently departed loved one • In Lieu of Flowers Card so that a donation is made to Lions Foundation of Canada in the event of your death Planned Giving • A lasting legacy with a planned gift in your will • Dog Guide Endowment to invest in the future of Dog Guides – only the interest generated annually is spent on programs and new initiatives Lions Foundation of Canada Annual Report 2007~2008 /15
