The Canada US
Border around Emerson
has become a hot button
item recently. People
are crossing illegally
into Canada from the
States, then applying
for refugee status from
inside Canada. The
numbers had been
increasing annually for
a couple of years, but
the election of Donald
After the meeting, the officials held a press conference with a large gallery
Trump as president and processing. They
his executive order to
ban immigration from
some countries has
prompted a big increase
in recent weeks.
On February 4,
the Canadian Border
Services Agency had
more people applying
for refugee status than
room for them to wait
comfortably while
called on the Town of
Emerson’s Emergency
Coordinators to open
the Complex for some of
these people as they do
during highway closures.
The result was that
partially processed
asylum seekers were
housed in the complex
temporarily. This led
Reeve Greg Janzen to call
a meeting of all affected
agencies to determine
proper protocols for
handling the surge of
asylum seekers. The
meeting was attended by
Dominion City News
By Shirley Berrington
It was a beautiful
weekend and nice
temps are predicted
for this week as well, so
hopefully some of our
snow will melt before
we get anymore. In the
meantime we will sure
enjoy this gorgeous
sunshine, which seems
to be making our daylight
hours much longer. The
deer are really invading
the town looking for
food in the deep snow.
They’re even stealing
from the bird feeders.
Best wishes for
a speedy recovery go
out to Hugh Lamont
following his surgery
on Friday. Also, his
grandson Keenan, who
had a nasty fall and had
to have surgery on his
knee the same day.
We were shocked
to hear of the sudden
passing of Andy Sirski
of Winnipeg, formally of
Dominion City, and well
Riverside Rosenort News
by Lorraine Loewen
It is so nice to see
more of the sun these
days and we are very
happy to have some nice
temperatures as well. If
any of my readers will
be heading for the Forks
any time soon you must
see the Crokicurling that
is taking place. This is the
brainchild of architects
Muir and Wreford, of
Public City Architecture.
I must mention it is the
company that Mary Jane
(Grandson Adam’s) wife
is employed with. The
game is really a spinoff
of the original Crokinole
and mixed with curling
makes it very interesting.
This is bringing back the
fun of the old crokinole
boards coming back
to the table with lots
of competition during
these winter days!!!
Valentines day has
already been celebrated
known in the area. Our
sincere sympathy goes
out to his wife Pat and
their family.
The cost is $152 per team
included. The Stick Spiel
is on March 18 th . The
cost is $50 a team with 3,
With the beginning of
February, “I Love to Read
Month” has officially
begun at RVS! This year,
their theme is Dr. Seuss
and the school’s literacy
committee has planned
some exciting events.
Each Friday, there will
with supper at the
Rosenort EMC church
on Thursday evening.
It was an enjoyable
time of dress up for
couples, with Pete and
Annie Friesen winning,
lovely red accessories
and even a black top hat
completed the outfit.
The entertainment of
a singing group was
enjoyed.
The Morris
Fellowship held their
Valentines supper on
Thursday evening going
with an Hawaiian theme.
The tables looked lovely
and the pineapple punch
was delicious. After a
short devotional, time
was spent in group games
with intermissions of
couples reminiscing
about different love
stories.
The Rosenort
Fellowship Chapel held
be two events: Dress up
Fridays and Mystery Box
Draws! Students got to
wear their favourite hat
on February 3 rd , and a
mustache on February
10 th. They can wear
pajamas on February
17 th and their craziest
socks on February 24 th .
The students who can
make the correct guess
on a book quote and are
chosen from the Mystery
Box get to win a prize!
Throughout the
month, they will be
having a few guests.
On February 13 th , they
hosted the Winkler
Flyers and on February
16 th , story teller Leigh-
Anne Kehler. During
that same week, Roseau
Valley School Library
held a book swap.
From February 21 st to
the 24 th it will be “Drop
Everything and Read
Week”, and it can happen
anytime! Finally, the
month comes to a close
on Friday, February
24 th as they celebrate
all of their reading
a pal –gal tea on Tuesday
evening, it is always a fun
time for the older ladies
to have a chance to pick
a younger gal to have as
a friend for the year.
The residents of the
Heritage Apts held a
farewell supper for the
Harold Goosens last
week. They have since
then moved to the
Maplewood Manor in
Steinbach.
Happy birthday
wishes go out to my sister
Eleanor Zacharias on
Feb.8th! She celebrated
with family and friends
during the week.
Welcome back to
MaryAnne and Randy
Siemens of Rosenort
who spent a couple of
weeks in Ixtapa Mexico.
They enjoyed time with
daughter Tami and
Dustin Waldner.
Gaylene and Leighton
Siemens returned from
a holiday to the New
Puerta Vallarta. Lovely
accomplishments and
also Dr. Seuss’ upcoming
birthday! This month, the
students are focusing on
goal oriented reading,
with a tally at the end of
each week on a bulletin
board. Happy reading
everyone!
The DC Winter
Carnival will take place
February 24 th , 25 th
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the
passing of our brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and
friend, Larry Allan Carpenter (Carpy) on February
5, 2017.
Larry was predeceased by his mother Florie
Marie Carpenter, his father Larry Lincoln
Carpenter and his grandparents.
He is survived by his sisters Cindy Carpenter
(Gabe), Hollie Mansell (Dave), and Candice
Pathenay (Grant) and his nieces and nephews
Alisha Groshok, Crystal Groshok, Savanna
Mansell, Douglas Mansell, Tristan Parthenay,
Dillan Parthenay, Adrianna Parthenay and
extended family and friends
Larry was born on August 6, 1974 at the
Misericordia Hospital to Larry and Florie
Carpenter. He grew up and remained in the
Dominion City, MB area. Larry had mastered
several occupations, including construction of a
golf course, farming, heavy equipment operator,
and was most widely known for being an expert
mechanic. He could fix anything with a motor, big
or small and everything in between. He enjoyed
many hobbies such as snowmobiling, quadding,
playing baseball, camping, fishing, boating, but
most of all he enjoyed socializing with family and
friends whether it was around a campfire, a BBQ,
hot tubbing, or any other type of social event. He
loved music, the louder the better, and he always
had an endless supply of stories and jokes to
entertain all.
Larry was kind, caring, thoughtful, and always
willing to lend a hand. His strength throughout
his cancer journey was unfaltering; he fought hard
right to the very end.
Thank you to the incredible staff and doctors
of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their
exceptional care of Larry.
The family would like to thank Larry's many
friends who have been such a great support in
so many ways over the past several years. Your
support, friendship and help have kept our family
American Refugees?
Over the past two
weeks we’ve all heard
about asylum seekers
crossing the border near
Emerson.
As Canadians, we are
aware of the oppression
and pervasive violence
and the millions of
displaced people
around the globe. Many
thousands of these
people are waiting
patiently, dreaming of
the day that they can
come to Canada.
Canada is a
welcoming country, a
country of immigrants.
As a nation we have
a responsibility to do
our part in alleviating
suffering and providing
safety.
But we need to be
clear - the migrants that
are crossing into Canada
illegally in the dead of
night are not refugees.
The United States of
America is a safe country
and there is no such
thing as a “refugee” from
the U.S. They are not
being persecuted there.
There is a safe, legal
process in place at every
Canadian airport and
land border crossing for
people to claim refugee
status. These migrants
are being coached to
purposefully avoid
border crossings and
are taking advantage of
a loophole in the existing
law.
We need to be
generous but we also
need to ensure the
integrity of our border.
We must always consider
our national security and
do our due diligence to
make sure we know who
is entering our country,
where they are entering
and why.
We also need to
ensure that the system
is fair to all those seeking
to make Canada their
new home.
I will continue
to push the Liberal
Government to close the
loophole that is currently
being exploited and I
will continue to voice
the concerns of my
constituents living along
the border near Emerson
who are expressing
safety concerns within
their communities.
We must ensure the
integrity of our shared
border with the United
States and protect our
generous immigration
system. The residents
living along the border
in communities such
as Emerson and the
thousands of people
patiently waiting to come
to this great country of
ours deserve no less.
Rembember to
recycle this
newspaper
It seems unreal,
but this edition of the
Southeast Journal
marks our tenth year
as publishers. We
purchased the paper
in 2007 and our first
edition was on February
16, 2007. Since then,
we have published 49
editions a year, (we take
two weeks off in August
and one in December)
or about 490 editions.
Hard to believe when put
that way.
We thank all the
people we work with
to make this possible.
The guys at Morgan
Printing and the people
who write the columns.
Shirley Berrington,
Lorraine Loewen, and
Jeremy Bradley were
writing for the Journal
when we bought it, and
still produce a column
a week. Others have left
for a variety of reasons,
Anne Decima, Rikki and
Jeanette Bergstresser,
and Kristin Opocensky.
Others have joined us
like Sonya Grier, Helen
Bially, Joanne Graydon,
Sean D Conway,
Weldon Rinn, and Diane
Breckon. As well as these
who provide news and
columns on a weekly
basis, others submit
stories on topics of
special interest to them.
To you all- THANK YOU.
We could not do this
without you.
As well as all the
people who provide the
stories and pictures, the
other group, essential to
making this a business
are the advertisers.
Without the income by
advertising this paper
would not, could not, be
viable. Over the years,
there has been big shifts,
(for the most part in the
wrong direction) in the
Inside the Dike
Ten Years Today
by Don Piett
ads in the paper. Many
large corporations have
quit advertising in print,
the Federal government
has quit advertising in
Community papers, and
the Province is following
suit. However, the local
businesses have been
steady and consistent in
advertising in the paper
and we cannot thank you
enough.
And, of course, our
readers and public. It
is always great to hear
that people are reading
the paper. It is great to
hear from advertisers
that their ads work. I
enjoy getting letters to
the editor and we try to
publish any from our
area.
Another group that
keeps things going
is what I consider
the mechanical crew
and Brenda calls the
distribution people. I
prefer mechanical
because it is the
mechanics of putting
the flyers and inserts into
each paper and making
sure the right number go
to the right post offices.
When we started out,
our children helped with
this function, for a small
fee. They have moved
away, and now this job is
handled very capably by
Geordie Pratt, Jennifer
Ducharme and Tori
Pratt. It makes for a lively
and busy Wednesday
afternoon. Thank you for
all the hard work.
Looking back at some
earlier editions, the paper
has evolved. One of the
biggest changes is the
amount of colour in the
paper. When we bought
the paper, there was only
colour on rare occasions,
now we have four colour
pages every week and
more sometimes. In
2009 we started a web
page and every edition
is posted on the website
for one week. All things
change with time, and
the Southeast Journal is
no exception.
We try to highlight
local events and stories
that aren’t reported in
other media and keep
our focus local. Often our
opinion pieces are wider
in scope and refer to
provincial and national
events and topics. This
is natural as we are all
interested in these things
and like to make our
opinions known.
It has been a great
ten years and we look
forward to the future
and will keep on
writing about events in
Morris, Municipality of
Emerson-Franklin, and
the Rural Municipalities
of Montcalm and Morris.
Recipe of the Week
Saskatoon Oat and Seed Bread
1 cup oat bran
½ cup quick cooking oats
½ cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1/3 cup ground brown or golden flaxseed
1/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
¼ cup unsalted, toasted sunflower seeds
¼ cup unsalted, toasted pumpkin seeds (opt.)
2 Tbsp whole brown or golden flax seed
2 Tbsp sesame seeds
2 Tbsp poppy seeds
1 ¼ cup – 1 percent buttermilk
1 large egg, beaten
2 Tbsp canola oil
2/3 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed and
drained
Preheat oven to 350 and position rack in the centre
of the oven. In a large bowl, combine oat bran,
oats, flour, ground flaxseed, salt baking powder,
baking soda, brown sugar, sunflower seeds,
pumpkin seeds, whole flax seeds, sesame seeds
and poppy seeds. Mix well. In another bowl whisk
buttermilk, egg and oil. Add to dry ingredients. Stir
until moistened. Gently stir in Saskatoon’s. Spoon
batter into a 9 x 5 loaf pan that has been sprayed
with a non-stick spray. Bake 50-60 minutes or until
a wooden skewer inserted in the centre of the loaf
comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes before
removing to cooling rack. Cool completely before
slicing or wrapping.
To toast seeds: preheat oven to 350. Combine
sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds in a pie plate.
Toast 3 minutes, stir, toast 3 more minutes, stir
again. If needed toast another 2-3 minutes until
lightly browned. Yields – loaf (16 slices)
Bread may be stored in an airtight container for up
to 2 days or frozen up to 2 months.
Meeting from Page 1
“To the Point”
By Jeremy Bradley
It’s too soon to tell
how this will go
I wasn’t expecting two
nations to become one
but the prime minister
and the president met,
had a handshake that
lasted a reasonable
amount of time, spoke
highly of the countries,
posed for pictures and it
was over.
Justin Trudeau and
Donald Trump met at
the White House earlier
in the week. The purpose
of the visit was to have
their first sit down
and seemingly lay the
foundation of what will
hopefully be a pleasant
four years for Canadians
and a constant scrutiny
by the neighbours to the
south.
Because much of
my radio audience is
American I was peppered
with tweets and emails
from people wondering
what I thought of the
meeting between the
two leaders. My answer
was simple: I really don’t
have an opinion right
now.
We already know
Trudeau and Trump
won’t agree on
everything and that’s
fine, they don’t have to.
They will have to work
together. Their situation
won’t be much different
than people in other
jobs (minus that whole
leading a country thing).
Most people in their job
have someone they need
to tolerate for the sake of
getting things done.
In this instance, if
one of the men starts to
pressure the other – and
I think we know who is
more likely to do that
aggressively between
the two – then it could
potentially become a
problem.
But as Trudeau and
Trump confirmed, the
relationship between the
two countries is vital for
the respective economies
with $2 billion crossing
the border every day.
Does either country pose
a threat to the other? Not
really, as far as I have
heard.
So unlike most people
chiming in on the whole
political landscape, I
really reserve my opinion
until something happens
between the countries.
There is no sense in
getting worked up now
when who knows what
tomorrow will bring.
Even with my
neutral response, a lot
of Americans weren’t
happy. And guess what.
I really didn’t care. It’s
our non-confrontational
and laid-back attitudes
that make Canadians
wonderful people and
the country a welcoming
place for people to visit.
If that makes us
losers in the eyes of
others because we
won’t be combative and
verbally attack complete
strangers, hey, I’ll take
it. Let’s be proud of our
positive reputation,
fellow losers.
That’s my point.
What’s yours? Tell me at
www.speakfreewithjb.
com.
asylum seekers showing
up in Emerson. The
basic steps will remain
the same. The RCMP
will pick up any asylum
seekers and transport
them to the CBSA at
the Emerson Border
crossing for processing.
If numbers are large
enough, the Emerson
Complex could be
pressed into service
again manned and
secured by CBSA.
The primary concern
of most participants
was safety, that of both
the people crossing
illegally and the
citizens of Emerson
and surrounding area.
The meeting brought
attention to the need
for agencies to partner
and work together to
assure the safety of all
concerned.
Also attending was
Rita Chahal of the
Manitoba Interfaith
Immigration Council
(Welcome Place) in
Winnipeg. She thanked
the people of Emerson
for their help and
brought ‘care packages’
of blankets, pillows, soap
and towels in case they
are needed in the future.
The meeting
concluded with the
agencies directly
involved to meet in a
smaller group and put
some security protocols
in place.
On this past weekend
(February 11 and 12)
another 28 individuals
crossed into Canada and
were processed by the
CBSA. That brings the
total for 2017 to 69. These
were handled without
use of the Emerson
Community Complex.
People wishing to
donate either money
or materials to help
the asylum seekers are
encouraged to contact
Manitoba Conservative Caucus
Concerned about Surge in Illegal Border
Crossings from Asylum-Seekers
Ottawa, ON –
Members of the
federal Manitoba
C o n s e r v a t i v e
caucus issued the
following statement:
“Our caucus is deeply
concerned about the
recent spike in illegal
border crossings near
Emerson, MB. Not only
is it extremely dangerous
for those illegally crossing
in freezing temperatures,
it also compromises
the integrity of our
border. Canada is a safe
and welcoming country,
but we must also take
steps to protect our
border and ensure the
process for entering our
country is consistent and
fair for all seeking refuge
in Canada.”
“Immigration is
foundational to who
we are as Canadians.
Immigrants and refugees
from all over the world
have greatly added to
Canada›s success and
prosperity. The current
situation, however,
rewards those that
are entering Canada
illegally and acts as a
disincentive to proceed
through the fair,
legitimate application
process.”
“There’s reason to
believe that the number
of illegal crossings from
asylum-seekers will
continue to grow. While
asylum-seekers may have
good reasons to cross
the border, our system
should encourage all
claimants to go through
the proper channels.”
“We call on the
Liberal government
to enforce the laws of
Canada and utilize all
legal means to strengthen
the security of our
border. The Government
of Canada must respect
the Canada-US Safe Third
Country Agreement.”
“Canada Border
Services Agency
and the RCMP
must implement policies
which deter this
illegal behaviour and
immediately return those
who are attempting to
jump the queue back to
the United States.”
DC Ladies Bonspiel 2017
by Shirley Berrington
We were ecstatic to
have 15 entries for our
Ladies Bonspiel, and
extra delighted to see so
many younger people
putting together rinks to
make it a great success.
As well as our local rinks,
we were pleased to have
teams from Arnaud, Vita,
Emerson, Altona, and
teams made up of curlers
throughout the local area
and Winnipeg.
The bonspiel started
Friday evening, but
kicked into high gear on
Saturday with a lovely
supper catered by Cindy
Kramble, entertainment
with riotous fun games,
and a wide array of
costumes for our beach
party theme. Our ladies
curling members did a
fantastic job decorating,
entertaining, and
soliciting prizes for
our rainbow auction.
There was excellent
participation in the
costumes and Brenda
Max’s team of lit-up jelly
fish were outstanding!
Because our curling
rink only features 3
sheets of artificial ice,
the semi final and final
games took place on
Sunday. There were
plenty of spectators
and Calcutta owners
out to cheer on their
teams. The young Altona
girl’s team skipped by
Hayley Bergman, with
curlers Olivia Bruneau,
Payton Bergman and
Anastasia Ginters
defeated the local rink of
Patsy Gregoire, Virginia
Weiss, Irene Friesen
and Shirley Gross in the
1 st Event final to win it
all. Jean Mackie’s team
of Liz Forrester, Doris
Neumann and Blythe
Boese captured the
second event over Laura
Riach’s team. My team
of Patricia Pohrebniuk,
Vanessa Christiuk, and
spare Macey Ostberg
were victorious over
Trish Clem’s squad.
A big bouquet goes
out to our men curlers
for manning the bar
and looking after the
ice, our caterer for the
great supper, all those
who donated to our
rainbow auction, and
all the curlers who took
part in the bonspiel.
You all helped make it
a memorable one and
profitable for our club,
and we truly appreciate
your support.
Valentine’s Dinner at Congregate
Meal by Shirley Berrington
On Friday, at the
Congregate Meal
Program, at the Legion
Hall, it was a full house
with folks from the
Emerson Personal Care
Home attending, as well
as other guests.
The hall looked
pretty with their hearts
and helium balloon
decorations. Service to
Seniors Coordinator
Lorri French welcomed
everyone and introduced
little singers Alexa and
Quinn French, who
performed 3 songs which
included actions. They
did an awesome job and
received lots of applause
from a very appreciative
audience. Alexa French
won the beautiful handknitted
afghan that was
donated by Marg Anstett
I read a short poem
about Valentine’s Day
and delivered the Grace
before Maria and her
volunteers served up
a tasty baked ham and
macaroni cheese dinner.
Over the past two
weeks our Municipality
of Emerson-Franklin
has seen an influx of
individuals walking
across the Canada-USA
border seeking asylum
in Canada.
This is not something
new, as this has been
going on for several
years, however the recent
groups have been larger
than ones previously
encountered.
These individuals
often end up on the
streets in Emerson
and there have been
instances of homeowners
encountering them.
From a humanitarian
view these individuals
are often cold after
Valentine’s Day entertainers at meal program
Alexa and Quinn French
The dinner finished with
Lorri thanking everyone
and raffling off the
helium balloons to make
walking for a long
period of time in frigid
conditions and are
looking for a warm place.
From a safety point of
view it is unknown as to
what kind of individuals
they are.
In seeking asylum in
Canada it is doubtful
that they would have
negative intentions that
would affect their claim,
however safety must
always be at the forefront
of one’s mind.
As residents of the
Municipality it is advised
to call 911 to report
any asylum seekers
and begin the process
of the RCMP locating
these individuals and
transporting them to the
Valentine’s Day extra
special for some of the
guests. It was a special
day!
Municipality of Emerson-Franklin on
Asylum Seekers
By Bill Spanjer Municipal Emergency Coordinator
Canada Border Services
Agency office in Emerson
for identification and
processing.
Once processing has
been completed by the
CBSA, arrangements
are made to have these
individuals transported
to a reception agency in
Winnipeg.
Organizers Of Winter Ultramarathon Raising
Funds To Support Asylum Seekers And Refugees
Winnipeg /
Emerson, MB – Actif
Epica, Manitoba’s
most gruelling ultra
endurance event, has
added a new course
extension for 2017 that
starts in Emerson, MB
– which has become the
focal point of a recent
influx of asylum seekers
crossing the border into
Canada.
Consistent with Actif
Epica’s motto: ‘Celebrate
Human Resilience’,
race organizers are
asking participants
and the public to make
donations to Hospitality
House Refugee Ministry,
one of a number of local
front-line organizations
directly helping asylum
seekers and refugees as
they start new lives here.
According to race
organizer David Pensato,
“given our race’s new
connection with the
community of Emerson
and to show solidarity
– in a small way – to
those coming across the
border under extreme
conditions, we felt it was
important to offer our
support”.
“A human tragedy is
unfolding on the very
doorstep of Canada.
These people are
desperate. We’ve
got to help”, said Tom
Denton, spokesperson
for Hospitality House.
This year’s race
takes place on February
18, 2017. Actif Epica
has earned several
distinctions, including
being named as one of
Canada’s 10 Big Rides
(Canadian Cycling
Magazine, 2013), a
Manitoba Tourism
Award for Event of the
Year (2014), a qualifier in
Alaska’s internationallyrenowned
Iditarod Trail
Invitational, and one
of Canada’s ultimate
adventures (Impact
Magazine, 2016).
Hospitality House
Refugee Ministry is a
non-profit organization,
and has for many
years been Winnipeg’s
leading sponsor of
refugees. Thousands
have been sponsored
from appalling refugee
circumstances, into new
hope and productive
lives in Canada.
Hospitality House’s
ability to sponsor new
refugees is reliant on
donations.
I don’t believe I offered
much help except that I
did recall the mans name
from the fifties.
I just had another
call from Wayne with
good news. This man was
Emillian Kmaomasha,
who lived in the area.
He is remembered in
this community for his
basket weaving. Perhaps
even today there are still
some baskets which he
perfected. More than
likely he passed away
at the Vita Hospital (not
sure).
The honourable
part to this write up
is that the late Dr H.V.
Waldon, in August
27, 1954 purchased a
burial plot for Emillian
Kmaomasha, from the
Ukrainian Holy Ghost
Ukrainian Orthodox
Church. Dr. Waldon’s
service to S E Manitoba
left a legacy of his 31
years of dedicated
service, where he stood
by on a 24 hour call.
Perhaps you have
recollections on Emillian
Kmaomasha, please
pass that information to
Wayne 204-373-2416.
Let’s hope this cold
snap will come to pass
and no more of the white
stuff, sure got plenty of
hills around here, wishful
thinking – keep smiling,
oh and hope you had a
nice Valentines Day.
It Occurs to Me
Our Winter Day
By Joanne Graydon
When I closed my
eyes, I imagined a
warm summer day at
the beach… the waves
rippling against the
shore, the girls filling
their sand pails with
sloppy wet sand and the
sun feeling deliciously
warm across my
face. BUT this wasn’t
summer. It was winter. In
Manitoba. In February.
“It Occurs to Me”
I loved a winter day.
It was going to be a
family day with all the
grandgirls, grandson and
extra company arriving
soon. As the soup was
simmering on the stove, I
heard the familiar patter
of stomping snow boots
Rinn's Ramblings
by Weldon Rinn
So, just a quick trip
around breaking and
not-so-newsworthy news
in the amazing world of
– “If you can think it up,
someone will want to
legalize it” – or you can
insert a lame title of your
own if you wish, I just
find myself at a loss for
words, rationale, or some
semblance of common
sense when I read/listen
to some of what we are
greeted with during our
everyday lives.
The latest headscratcher
that has left me
a bit in awe is gender-free
identifications, issued by
the government. Now,
I know when media
was reporting crimes,
or identifying suspects
that they used to use
references to colour,
guesses at race, and the
usual staples, gender,
size, body type, etc.
Clothing too has even
come under a bit of fire,
especially if referred to as
“gang colours”.
So now we will have
“persons of unknown
gender” making news in
one way shape or form.
Interesting and not the
least thought provoking.
So, we have Men’s
rooms, Women’s’ Rooms,
LGBTTTQ Rooms, and
now we have what?
Androgynous Rooms?
What else could you
call them? I wonder if
showing ID is necessary
to gain entrance? And
what about sports
competitions such as the
Olympics? Remember
the big kerfuffle about
a certain athlete a few
decades ago? A German
athlete, named Dora
Ratjen who competed
as a woman but was
later determined to be a
man…for the record she
finished 4 th in a high jump
competition; this was
during the 1936 Summer
Olympics held in Berlin,
imagine……was nobody
even curious?
Another news story,
breaking if you wish,
concerns one of the most
gruesome criminal (or
not depending which
“expert” you consult)
acts, the beheading,
mutilation, and partial
cannibalism of a young
man on a Greyhound
bus only 9 years ago.
There has been more
than enough coverage of
the events of that day and
they have been related in
detail quite often many
times since. They don’t
need re-telling here. No,
let’s take a long hard
look at the recent events
regarding the man who
committed these crimes,
without any reasonable
doubt as they were well
documented by many
eye witnesses.
Victims actually
because his family and
friends, not to mention
many, many others will
never be able to think
about what happened,
I am sure, without an
absolute wave of horror
besetting them and
unsettling their thoughts
and comfort of everyday
life.
My own horror and
shock here is that after
not even a decade the
man responsible for
these unimaginable
crimes is now a totally
free man, totally
discharged and turned
back into the general
population, free to come
and go as he sees fit.
Vince Li, now known
as Will Baker, is free
once again to travel, the
world I would assume,
Canada, at least, and
this may involve busses
again, trains, taxis,
transit, private vehicles,
airplanes, etc. etc.
I have just a few
questions, as do many
others…first some facts,
because he imagined
his victim to be an alien
during a psychotic break.
Because Mr. Li/Baker’s
doctors and lawyers
have now succeeded
in gaining his total
freedom, are they willing
to stake their reputations
and perhaps another
innocent’s life on the fact
Li/Baker will not stop
taking his medication
once all monitoring has
ceased? He was, and
even now is, assumed to
be a model of excellent
behaviour and is to be
trusted, completely.
REALLY? I will not be
rambling around on a
bus anytime soon…!
