THE SOUTHEAST JOURNAL Dominion City News By Shirley Berrington It was a beautiful weekend and nice temps are predicted for this week as well, so hopefully some of our snow will melt before we get anymore. In the meantime we will sure enjoy this gorgeous sunshine, which seems to be making our daylight hours much longer. The deer are really invading the town looking for food in the deep snow. They’re even stealing from the bird feeders. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Hugh Lamont following his surgery on Friday. Also, his grandson Keenan, who had a nasty fall and had to have surgery on his knee the same day. We were shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Andy Sirski of Winnipeg, formally of Dominion City, and well Riverside Rosenort News by Lorraine Loewen It is so nice to see more of the sun these days and we are very happy to have some nice temperatures as well. If any of my readers will be heading for the Forks any time soon you must see the Crokicurling that is taking place. This is the brainchild of architects Muir and Wreford, of Public City Architecture. I must mention it is the company that Mary Jane (Grandson Adam’s) wife is employed with. The game is really a spinoff of the original Crokinole and mixed with curling makes it very interesting. This is bringing back the fun of the old crokinole boards coming back to the table with lots of competition during these winter days!!! Valentines day has already been celebrated known in the area. Our sincere sympathy goes out to his wife Pat and their family. The next bonspiel on the calendar for DC is the Mixed Bonspiel on March 10-12 th . To register call Amy @ 204-7465306 or Trina @ 204-737-2448. The cost is $152 per team which includes the Blind Calcutta. It is a triple knockout with supper included. The Stick Spiel is on March 18 th . The cost is $50 a team with 3, 6-end games guaranteed and supper included. Please enter by March 15 th to Dave @ 427-2035 or Troy @ 427-3323. With the beginning of February, “I Love to Read Month” has officially begun at RVS! This year, their theme is Dr. Seuss and the school’s literacy committee has planned some exciting events. Each Friday, there will with supper at the Rosenort EMC church on Thursday evening. It was an enjoyable time of dress up for couples, with Pete and Annie Friesen winning, lovely red accessories and even a black top hat completed the outfit. The entertainment of a singing group was enjoyed. The Morris Fellowship held their Valentines supper on Thursday evening going with an Hawaiian theme. The tables looked lovely and the pineapple punch was delicious. After a short devotional, time was spent in group games with intermissions of couples reminiscing about different love stories. The Rosenort Fellowship Chapel held be two events: Dress up Fridays and Mystery Box Draws! Students got to wear their favourite hat on February 3 rd , and a mustache on February 10 th. They can wear pajamas on February 17 th and their craziest socks on February 24 th . The students who can make the correct guess on a book quote and are chosen from the Mystery Box get to win a prize! Throughout the month, they will be having a few guests. On February 13 th , they hosted the Winkler Flyers and on February 16 th , story teller Leigh- Anne Kehler. During that same week, Roseau Valley School Library held a book swap. From February 21 st to the 24 th it will be “Drop Everything and Read Week”, and it can happen anytime! Finally, the month comes to a close on Friday, February 24 th as they celebrate all of their reading a pal –gal tea on Tuesday evening, it is always a fun time for the older ladies to have a chance to pick a younger gal to have as a friend for the year. The residents of the Heritage Apts held a farewell supper for the Harold Goosens last week. They have since then moved to the Maplewood Manor in Steinbach. Happy birthday wishes go out to my sister Eleanor Zacharias on Feb.8th! She celebrated with family and friends during the week. Welcome back to MaryAnne and Randy Siemens of Rosenort who spent a couple of weeks in Ixtapa Mexico. They enjoyed time with daughter Tami and Dustin Waldner. Gaylene and Leighton Siemens returned from a holiday to the New Puerta Vallarta. Lovely accomplishments and also Dr. Seuss’ upcoming birthday! This month, the students are focusing on goal oriented reading, with a tally at the end of each week on a bulletin board. Happy reading everyone! The DC Winter Carnival will take place February 24 th , 25 th and 26 th . The annual Pancake Breakfast will be on Saturday morning, along with hockey games throughout the day as well as public skating and guest appearances of some local figure skaters. The Snow Golf Tournament will transpire as well as games sponsored by the Red River Rec. for the children. Family curling will take place at the curling rink on Sunday afternoon. Watch for posters and the electronic sign downtown advertising events. Chair Fitness Classes will continue sunny vacation!!Their daughter Savannah spent this time with the James Boulton family. It was nice to see Harv and Tillie Klassen in Steinbach on Tuesday afternoon. They have just recently moved to the Bridgepark Manor, a lovely new apartment. It was interesting to hear that the Johnny Rempel’s as well the Ernie Toew’s are also living there. It is Roll up to win at Tim Hortons once again!!! I heard that every 6 th cup is a winner! Well that proved to be true for me!!The 6 th cup had a free coffee! Would love to hear from any others that actually win anything!!! Have a great week!!! The Bingo games held at the Rosenort school recently were so successful that another evening of the fun will be held ,watch for further details by PAC. The 7th annual South East Sno-Riders Vintage Show, Shine & Ride will be held in Woodridge on Saturday March 4, 2017. Registration starting at 8:30 a.m., show & shine from 9 – 11 a.m. and the ride leaving Woodridge Community Centre at 11 a.m. Entrance fee includes a wiener roast along a non-designated groomed trail. Net proceeds are going to Cancer Care Manitoba. A pancake breakfast will be available at the Community Centre. For more info contact Ivy @ 204-257-2151. on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the Abbeyfield Rec Room with instructor Jen Slaney. The cost is $5 per time/$40 for the month. There will be bingo games held at the Abbeyfield Rec Room on the 24 th from 6:30 -8pm. Cost is $1 a game. Enter at the side door of the building off the parking lot for both of these events. One hundred and one families had a better Christmas because of you Christmas Cheer Team of Morris Area The Real Win Coffee House and Community Building It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, Larry Allan Carpenter (Carpy) on February 5, 2017. Larry was predeceased by his mother Florie Marie Carpenter, his father Larry Lincoln Carpenter and his grandparents. He is survived by his sisters Cindy Carpenter (Gabe), Hollie Mansell (Dave), and Candice Pathenay (Grant) and his nieces and nephews Alisha Groshok, Crystal Groshok, Savanna Mansell, Douglas Mansell, Tristan Parthenay, Dillan Parthenay, Adrianna Parthenay and extended family and friends Larry was born on August 6, 1974 at the Misericordia Hospital to Larry and Florie Carpenter. He grew up and remained in the Dominion City, MB area. Larry had mastered several occupations, including construction of a golf course, farming, heavy equipment operator, and was most widely known for being an expert mechanic. He could fix anything with a motor, big or small and everything in between. He enjoyed many hobbies such as snowmobiling, quadding, playing baseball, camping, fishing, boating, but most of all he enjoyed socializing with family and friends whether it was around a campfire, a BBQ, hot tubbing, or any other type of social event. He loved music, the louder the better, and he always had an endless supply of stories and jokes to entertain all. Larry was kind, caring, thoughtful, and always willing to lend a hand. His strength throughout his cancer journey was unfaltering; he fought hard right to the very end. Thank you to the incredible staff and doctors of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care of Larry. The family would like to thank Larry's many friends who have been such a great support in so many ways over the past several years. Your support, friendship and help have kept our family strong during these trying times.
