INSET Day I am sure you will all agree that the INSET day yesterday was a huge success – the positive comments on Twitter and emails we have received already have been wonderful. Thank you to everyone who came along and participated – there was a real buzz in the room right from the start. It was also great to see so many of you engaging with our workshop leads and keynote speakers. We will shortly be sending round an email with all the workshop presentations attached and also a link to a short evaluation for you and your staff to complete. Leadership Now The launch day for the bespoke Leadership Now programme was a huge success. We were joined by Jill Berry who delivered an inspiring session on making the leap to leadership which was really well received. There are still a small number of spaces available on this programme, so if you would like further details or have a member of staff that would benefit from attending please contact j.thain@candlebylane.co.uk. Important Dates ‘Embedding formative assessment with teacher learning communities’ – Dylan Wiliam We are very excited about the ‘Embedding formative assessment with teacher learning communities’ interactive course that Dylan Wiliam will be deliver for us on 6th June. As Dylan is now based in the USA, this is a fantastic opportunity to join us on this event. The Big Day Out Spaces are now beginning to fill up for this amazing day that will take place at Cotgrave Candleby Lane on the 17 th March. Teach meet – Teaching and Learning Our next Teach Meet will take place on the 28 th March at Hillside Nursery and Primary School. This will be led by Laura Wookie (Lead Practitioner and SLE) and Jonathan Lear who is a practicing teacher and deputy head will be delivering the keynote. Marking workload Project We have 20 schools confirmed to take part in this project and strategies to be researched have now been allocated. A launch event will take place on the 28 th February at the Nottinghamshire Golf Course where input on the research approaches will be shared. Time will also be allowed for planning and questions. Further details of the event will be sent out later this week. Information & policy updates Justine Greening speech to Chartered College of Teaching The Department for Education (DfE) has published (16 February) a Facebook video of Secretary of State, Justine Greening’s speech to the inaugural conference of the Chartered College of Teaching (CCT). Ms Greening won applause when she said that QTS would not be scrapped, but would be strengthened, and that she wanted to see QTS so well regarded and so strong that school leaders and teachers will naturally want all of their teaching staff to have it. She announced that a newly strengthened QTS will be introduced from September 2019. Ms Greening also said that the new, fully revised, national professional qualifications - that have been developed in partnership with the teaching profession - will be implemented from September 2017, for middle and senior leaders and headteachers, and also for the first time for executive leaders; and that these qualifications should have the same kudos as the MBA has for business leaders. She also said that the DfE will shortly be publishing the findings of its teacher workload survey, and an action plan, which will include a programme of targeted support to tackle workload. Further details can be found:https://www.facebook.com/educationgovuk/ World Book Day 2017 The National Literacy Trust has produced free resource packs for primary and secondary schools in support of World Book Day, which will take place on Thursday 2 March 2017. Further information can be found:http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/schools_teaching/world-book-day-2017 National Writing Day National Writing Day is being held on Wednesday 21 June 2017, with a special website having been established to support activities for the day itself. National Writing Day is a collaborative initiative between First Story and partner arts and literacy organisations across the UK. It is also supported by Arts Council England and Old Possum’s Practical Trust. There are free resource packs available for primary and secondary schools, which look at approaches to teaching creative writing, a range of workshop plans, and an assembly exercise.
