Model Making Portfolio
These are some picture form
my first architecture project in
my first year are university.
I thoroughly enjoyed it not
because I love architecture
(which I do) but because it
made me realise that my
talents lie in hard edged
model making as apposed to
the soft edged, sculptural
work I had done previously.
This is still one of the projects
I'm most proud of.

I really enjoy looking at the different problem solving
that goes into making a stop motion character,
particularly how the armature is constructed to
make it walk a certain way. I picked a pangolin
because they have a very unique waddle which
gives the animal a persona. I did test animations
throughout to help me better understand how the
pangolin should walk. Unfortunately I didn't have
enough time in the project to make a head but I
would really like to finish it off with a fully
mechanically animated head.

The idea for this project came from my
interest in clocks and mechanisms of all
kinds.
This project was excellent for my
education because it enabled me to
try out loads of different processes. One
that I would like to do again but have
had the opportunity was pewter sand
casting. Our technicians hadn't done it
before either so I more or less taught
myself.

These are three science toys I made for the youtube
channel Grand Illusions for my client led project at the
beginning of 3rd year.
Below is a toy that you blow in the smaller tube trying to
make a polystyrene ball go all the way round. Below right
is a miners lung tester joke toy, if you blow in the right way
the fan spins round and if you blow in the wrong way you
get covered in talc. Right are two spinners hovering on
magnetic repulsion. They also have 3 repelling magnets
around the rim which interact with each other.

For my final major project I’m making a replica penny arcade machine
and I'm using early 20th century amusement parks as the theme of the
game. Below right is a video of a working sketch model.

These are some small things I've
made outside uni hours. Far right
is a walnut and brass lamp I
made for my parents. The rings
below right are from a jewellery
and silversmithing night course I
took last January 2016. I made
the spinning top after discovering
that people collect
machined spinning tops. I
intend to continue making
them, perhaps to sell.
